For the first half, the Composite returned 2.3%, versus 11.5% for the Index. The letter highlights that a significant portion of the shortfall occurred in April due to market dynamics and geopolitical events, with tech, particularly semiconductors, driving recent gains. Broyhill notes its lack of direct semiconductor exposure but acknowledges potential interest in the sector if opportunities arise, maintaining its investment philosophy focused on capital protection in fragile market conditions. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.

"Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) gained 37%, the best result in the portfolio, and was initiated in the first quarter as one of two investments in the depressed housing sector. Management raised the topline outlook, took out delayed-draw leverage to repurchase stock, and increased the buyback guide by $200 million, to more than $800 million against a $2 billion authorization. Earlier in the quarter, our investment team also attended Masco's investor day and was able to interact with management at the event."

Dell Technologies (DELL) shares have surged more than 316% so far in 2026, fueled by robust demand for AI infrastructure, increased enterprise investment in modernizing IT systems, and continued expansion of its customer base.
The company is also benefiting from strong demand for its AI-optimized servers, and the momentum is likely sustainable in the coming quarters. At the same time, rising AI demand is also driving demand for traditional servers and networking equipment, further strengthening Dell's long-term growth prospects.

Nvidia has placed a large financial bet on the lasers that connect AI systems. On March 2, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) invested $2 billion in Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) common stock and entered a nonexclusive multiyear strategic arrangement covering optics development, purchase commitments, and access to manufacturing capacity. Coherent's August filing keeps attention on the capital required to meet that opportunity. The deal suggests bandwidth, not raw compute alone, may determine how quickly next-generation data centers scale.
Photo from Coherent website
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) needs faster and more power-efficient connections as clusters grow to enormous numbers of accelerators. Strategic access to lasers and optical components can reduce supply risk and help Nvidia coordinate networking with its computing roadmap. The bull case is that Nvidia secures a critical input before demand peaks. The bear case is that purchase commitments could become less attractive if technologies shift or capacity expands faster than customers need.
Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) gains capital, demand visibility, and validation from the AI industry's most influential platform company. Its lasers, transceivers, and materials can participate as data movement consumes a larger share of system power and cost. Yet scaling production requires capital expenditures and working capital well before all revenue is recognized. Customer concentration, manufacturing yields, pricing negotiations, and technology transitions can determine whether volume growth becomes attractive free cash flow.
The nonexclusive structure is important here. Nvidia can support capacity without surrendering alternative suppliers, while Coherent can sell beyond Nvidia. That makes the arrangement more resilient than an acquisition, but it also limits exclusivity as a competitive moat. The strongest thesis is not that one partner controls optics. It is that AI architectures need substantially more optical content, allowing both partners to benefit if execution holds.

Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) sit side by side in many artificial intelligence (AI) hardware conversations, yet the market makes it clear they are not the same kind of stock. Broadcom looks like a cash-rich infrastructure utility. AMD looks more like a leveraged bet on a shift in which players will supply the brains of data centers. That difference, more than any single metric, is what their valuations are signaling.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Broadcom's AI business is built around selling high-speed networking equipment and designing custom accelerators for hyperscalers that want their own bespoke silicon. It co-designs application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for customers such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta Platforms.
Each of these chips is narrowly built for the specific model mix and power envelope of the buyer, in contrast to the general-purpose GPUs sold by AMD, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), and others. Because of this, ASICs can be more efficient and less costly to use than GPUs for the precise types of workloads they are designed for.
Those ASIC programs are large. Broadcom's AI semiconductor revenue sits near $8.4 billion per quarter, with a disclosed AI chip backlog of around $73 billion, and management is now talking about a line of sight to more than $100 billion in AI revenue in 2027. Custom ASIC servers are on track to reach about 27.8% of AI server shipments in 2026, with ASIC sales volumes growing 44.6% year over year, well ahead of the growth pace of merchant GPUs.

Higher yields lifted MetLife (MET) 25% YTD on rising investment income, but crushed Realty Income (O) as its dividend barely clears the 5.31% Treasury.
Vornado (VNO) sits at 8x leverage with two loans already in default, turning every high-rate refinancing into a direct cash flow drain.
Duration and debt structure are what determine which dividend stocks win or lose as the 5.31% 30-year Treasury sorts income capital, not sector labels.
Act now: the **** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and Verizon didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
Two dividend payers, same day, opposite reactions to the same Treasury yield move. MetLife (NYSE:MET) is up 25.2% year to date, while Realty Income (NYSE:O) has spent the past month falling 4.88% even as its monthly check keeps arriving. The catalyst behind both moves is the same: the 30-year Treasury closed at 5.31% on August 17, 2026, and the long end of the curve is now competing directly with high-yield equities for income capital.

On July 28, GSK plc (NYSE:GSK) reported its second-quarter financial results, delivering strong core operational performance and showcasing steady commercial momentum. The firm's total Q2 turnover reached £8.4 billion, marking a 5% increase year-over-year at constant exchange rates (CER), while Core operating profit climbed 7% CER to £2.80 billion and Core EPS rose 9% CER to 50.5p. Growth was primarily fueled by double-digit gains in Specialty Medicines (+14% CER to £3.8 billion) and robust momentum in Vaccines (+8% CER to £2.3 billion). However, Total operating profit dropped 75% CER to £481 million, hit by a £1.3 billion non-cash impairment charge following the decision to discontinue camlipixant after CALM-1/2 Phase III trial results.
Alongside earnings, GSK outlined major strategic plans to accelerate its R&D roadmap. Management announced it expects 20+ Phase III trial starts in 2026, up from its previous projection of 10, focusing on 7 key **** et accelerations across 18 indications in oncology, respiratory, hepatology, and vaccines.
To support this pipeline expansion and fund late-stage development, GSK initiated its new 'Accelerate Growth' restructuring program. The three-year initiative aims to generate £1.9 billion in annual cost savings by 2029 for total costs of £2.4 billion, with savings earmarked for pipeline reinvestment and supporting operating margins through the dolutegravir loss-of-exclusivity period (2028–2030). Additionally, ViiV Healthcare, GSK's majority-owned HIV business, presented positive Phase IIIb VOGUE study data, reinforcing the efficacy and real-world utility of its long-acting HIV regimen portfolio.
This brings up a key question: Is GSK plc (NYSE:GSK)'s pipeline acceleration and core business growth enough to offset upcoming patent expiries, or does statutory margin volatility signal deeper pipeline execution risks ahead?
Bullish **** ysts highlight that GSK plc's core business model continues to show high execution efficiency, supported by key product launches and pipeline catalysts over the next 12 months that build confidence in reaching its £40 billion sales target by 2031. A critical driver is GSK plc's active business development strategy, illustrated by the acquisition of efimosfermin, which expands its hepatology portfolio, provides optionality for related liver diseases, and seamlessly aligns with corporate M&A goals.

The second half of July brought news that several apartment properties moved into special servicing, while others had their values reduced.
Once again, Texas was at the epicenter of these transfers, though one property in Brooklyn, New York, is also facing challenges, according to a flurry of Morningstar reports.
Two Keener Investments properties in League City, Texas — Harbor Walk and The Shore — were transferred to special servicing after the Houston-based owner stated that it "could no longer come out of pocket for debt service and escrow shortages," according to a July 31 Morningstar report.
The properties are still listed on Keener's website. It did not reply to a request for comment from Multifamily Dive.

Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is discussing a financing backstop that could change who bears the risk of OpenAI's next infrastructure expansion. The Wall Street Journal reported on July 26 that Nvidia was in talks to guarantee roughly $250 billion of financing for a proposed 10-gigawatt data center campus in southern Ohio, with OpenAI as a prospective tenant. Reuters said the project, being developed by SoftBank's SB Energy, could cost more than $500 billion including hardware. Nvidia was also reportedly discussing separate financing of as much as $350 billion for chips at the site.
These are negotiations, not completed commitments. Nvidia's connection runs through two specific financing channels. A guarantee could let lenders underwrite the OpenAI lease against Nvidia's stronger credit, while separate chip financing could fund purchases of Nvidia's own accelerators. Both could accelerate product deployment, but the guarantee would also expose Nvidia to customer-credit and project-execution risk. That proposed combination explains why investors worried that some future chip demand may depend on the supplier helping customers finance it.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is linked through OpenAI's cloud spending, not through general AI-sector exposure. If OpenAI directly leases and controls the Ohio campus instead of buying the equivalent compute through Azure, Microsoft could avoid some capital burden but miss the related cloud-infrastructure revenue and control over workload placement. It does not, however, establish that OpenAI is leaving Microsoft.
The companies' April 27 amended agreement says Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner and OpenAI products will ship first on Azure unless Microsoft cannot and chooses not to support the required capabilities. OpenAI can serve products across other cloud providers, while Microsoft retains a non-exclusive license to OpenAI models and products through 2032 and remains a major shareholder. An October 2025 agreement also included an incremental $250 billion commitment by OpenAI to buy Azure services. The Ohio proposal therefore represents infrastructure diversification at the margin, not a clean break.

Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:DELL) provides storage systems, servers, networking gear, and consulting services, as well as laptops, desktops, workstations, and accessories. On Tuesday's episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer addressed some of the complaints his viewers made regarding Dell and other companies whose stocks experienced a massive rally. He stated:
Some of you have complained to me that I've kept you out of Sandisk, which is up 570% year-to-date, Micron up 240%, Seagate up 224%, Dell up 221%, and Western Digital up 218%. I don't know how that's possible. I've liked Micron for ages, and if you asked Michael Dell who's the most positive person in the media toward his amazing company, I bet he'd say Jim Cramer. So I'm not anti-tech, but I do like diversification. We've had some sickening days of late where all these stocks that I just mentioned got clobbered.
Cramer has been a strong proponent of Dell Technologies Inc.'s (NYSE:DELL) stock for a while now. In fact, Cramer showed regret around missing opportunities in the stock over several episodes of Mad Money. He repeated the sentiment during the July 1 episode, as he stated:
Oh, then there's two that I'm really embarrassed and even mortified to talk about: AMD and Dell. With AMD, the Trust had made a lot of money in this one, and we took the big profit, but I said, don't worry about it, I'll get right back in after another run. But the pullback never came, so I missed it.
Dell? I put Dell in the Trust bullpen, saying it should be bought on any dip, but it never dipped. This stock just exploded higher without me. I missed one of the greatest stories ever told, and I'm a four-decade supporter of Michael Dell. What do all these missed winners have in common? I was too skeptical. I was… too wary. I failed to consider where they could go and instead focused on where they had come from.

The benchmark diesel price used as the basis for most fuel surcharges rose this week by the second-largest amount since the start of the Iran war.
The Department of Energy/Energy Information Administration average retail diesel price climbed 33.8 cents/gallon to $5.134/g, published Tuesday but effective Monday.
The size of the increase is the second largest since the benchmark price rose 96.2 cts/g on March 9, the first time the DOE/EIA price measured a full week of market movement following the launch of military action against Iran by the U.S. and Israel on February 28/March 1.
With the benchmark price having moved up sharply two weeks in a row, it is now 55.6 cts/g more than where it stood just three weeks ago.
Retail prices, as they generally do, are reacting after the fact to increases in the price of ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) on the CME commodity exchange.

The US dollar (DX-Y.NYB) has had a strong start to the year. Driven by booming foreign demand for US tech exposure and expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates, the greenback has appreciated roughly 2.5% against a basket of other major currencies.
Bank of America believes the US currency has more room to run in the second half of 2026.
The bank's foreign exchange desk sees three primary drivers for dollar outperformance: conflict in the Middle East, the AI boom, and a higher-for-longer interest rate outlook.
First, the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are set to keep geopolitical tensions high and oil prices higher. Even after a sharp decline in June, futures on Brent crude (BZ=F) and US WTI crude (CL=F) are still up roughly 40% on the year — and a new wave of conflict is driving them higher still.
Given that oil is priced in dollars, bids for the product are expected to support the greenback through foreign-exchange demand. The dollar is also well-positioned for traditional risk-off safe-haven purchases, FX strategist Alex Cohen said in a recent client note.

Conagra Brands has run up an annual loss of $1.9bn on the back of impairment charges.
The US manufacturer said the $2bn non-cash goodwill and brand impairment charges, recorded in its fourth quarter, were mainly due to a "sustained decline" in its share price and market cap.
The charges were recorded against two Conagra divisions: $215m for Grocery & Snacks and $1.75bn for Refrigerated & Frozen.
The charge meant the Hunt's ketchup maker posted a net loss attributable to the company of $1.92bn for the 53 weeks to 31 May. The year before, it generated a net profit of $1.15bn.
Over the year as a whole, Conagra booked more than $2.9bn in goodwill and other intangible ******* et impairment charges.

The Iran War, tariffs and the demand-driven AI-investment boon could add up to create inflationary conditions where Federal Reserve policymakers would need to consider interest-rate hikes later this year.
But not just yet.
According to the minutes of the June Federal Open Market Committee meeting, policymakers at the central bank were concerned about high inflation but needed more data before making a move on the benchmark Federal Funds Rate.
The data could also signal that rates should continue to hold for a while or even go lower sooner than many expected.
The minutes do not name participants so Fed watchers need to closely read the words in the 15-page document released July 8 as well as read between its lines.
