When asked by the press about the end of Neymar's journey with the national team, his father was emphatic: "He said, 'I think for me it's over.' He thinks so. We've just come out of a World Cup, which was difficult for everyone. We're talking about the next World Cup, four years from now. [...] We don't know what tomorrow holds."

Right afterward, Neymar Jr. was asked about his father's remarks and fired back jokingly: "but he's not the one who plays."

July 29 (UPI) -- Brazilian soccer sensation Neymar Jr. effectively confirmed he will no longer play in international matches.
Neymar made the announcement Tuesday after Santos beat Universidad Central in Santos, Brazil.
"I think my time with the ⁠national team has already passed," Neymar told reporters. "I made history there, and I'm very happy about it. I experienced a lot there, gave my blood and my life, and always fought and battled for the yellow jersey. But, I don't think I want it anymore."
Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer, made his senior team debut in 2010. He went to the World Cup four times with the Brazilians, including their 2026 run to the Round of 16.
The 34-year-old Santos forward scored once and played for 55 minutes at the 2026 tournament. He also hinted earlier this month that his international career was nearing its end.

While Santos traveled for the Copa Sudamericana playoffs, Neymar took part in a professional poker tournament.
Rested by the coaching staff to avoid the strain of the long trip, Neymar used his days in São Paulo to participate in the fourth stage of the Brazilian Poker Championship (BSOP).

That's partly due to injury and his age, as he isn't the same player he was when he was younger. Still, this is Neymar we're talking about. When he's healthy and firing on all cylinders, he's one of the most gifted offensive players of all time. As good as they've been so far in this World Cup, the Brazilians could certainly use more depth and firepower wherever they can get it.
Brazil's manager, Carlo Ancelotti, understands how useful Neymar can be. His pre-match comments about Neymar playing with the younger Vinícius Júnior suggest we will definitely see Neymar play against Norway. But it's still not clear whether that will be in a starting or second-half substitute capacity:
Just because Ancelotti says Neymar is capable of playing 90 minutes does not mean he will get the start. That, to me, reads like more of a comment on Neymar's general fitness being up to par. I would, quite honestly, be surprised if Neymar got the start this late into the World Cup. That doesn't feel like a decision that someone with Ancelotti's managerial acumen would make.
