Panthers news: Jalen **** er injury update is good news after Week 1 appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Jalen **** er gave Carolina Panthers fans a scare after his monster Week 1 performance, but his initial injury update sounds encouraging.
Coker told reporters Monday that he rolled his ankle during the first quarter of Sunday's 59-37 loss to the Chicago Bears but expects to practice Wednesday.
That's tremendous news considering **** er somehow played through the injury and proceeded to torch Chicago's secondary.
The third-year receiver caught eight of his nine targets for a career-high 138 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard score from Bryce Young. It was also the first multi-touchdown performance of **** er's career.

Iowa football news: How Hawkeyes can snap Playoff drought, per Kirk Herbstreit appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Kirk Ferentz is the Big Ten's all-time winningest football coach, but Ferentz has never led his team, the Iowa Hawkeyes, to the College Football Playoff and isn't a favorite to do so this season. The No. 21 Hawkeyes made a big quarterback decision Friday and have a tough task ahead on Saturday vs. Iowa State, with hope springing anew for a first-ever playoff season.
On Friday, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit joined The Pat McAfee Show where he laid out how the Hawkeyes can snap their playoff drought.
"I feel like they are (a fringe playoff team) every year," Herbstreit said. "I always look at Iowa with Kirk Ferentz as a team that is always knocking on that ten-win mark. I don't think they get credit to be honest with you because of the style of ball they play.

Michigan QB Bryce Underwood to face talented Oklahoma defense with starting job at stake originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
NORMAN, Okla. – If Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood is still the starter after Saturday, he will have saved his job after facing what appears to be an elite Oklahoma defense.
Underwood's Hail Mary touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan last Saturday gave Michigan a controversial 13-12 win over Western Michigan. But Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham was disappointed in the way the Wolverines played, so he made it clear this week that no one's position is guaranteed in the future – including Underwood's.
Underwood seemed caught off guard when learning Whittingham told the media his sophomore signal caller needs to improve to remain the starter.
"I didn't see that," Underwood said. "It's cool."

While Maryland's offense was easily its busiest unit during the Terps' 62-0 opening week win over Hampton, it's Maryland's defense that has numbers getting those around football talking.
According to Pro Football Focus, Maryland's defense received the sixth-highest grade of all Division I teams over the weekend as it held Hampton to just 85 total yards.
The Terps' defensive line was individually the eighth-highest graded unit in the country.
From the defensive line, redshirt sophomore edge rusher DD Holmes stood out on the tape, recording his first two sacks for Maryland. Those sacks came despite him playing just nine snaps on the night — with the big impact in little time earning Holmes the fourth-greatest individual defender grade for PFF of the week.
Setting aside the manner in which it happened, a physical win against Hampton likely didn't alter any predictions on Maryland's win total for the season. Now, the Terps are five wins away from hitting .500 for the season — which 64% of Testudo Times voters predicted would happen in our most recent SBNation Reacts poll.

Caitlin Clark once again came off the bench for Team USA in their group stage game against Italy at the FIBA World Cup. However, this time around, she wasn't able to show off her brilliance as she did in the game against China, where she scored 14 points and had 11 **** ists.
In a game against the 14th-placed FIBA nation, USA came out with a narrow 55-52 win, but Clark looked miles off her best as she only scored 1 point.
Jackie Young and Angel Reese, who came off the bench, were pivotal for Team USA. They scored 10 and 8 points respectively, with Reese also recording two blocks and a steal against Italy.
Clark was expected to have another big night, but she just never got going as the Italian defense made it hard for her to score.
The Indiana Fever player is known for her ability to score. She is averaging 22.5 PPG with the team in the WNBA, and after her performance against China, it seemed like the same version of her would be available throughout the tournament.

It wasn't pretty, but Duke was able to pull out a 17-3 victory over Tulane to begin Manny Diaz's third season with a win.
Here are some instant takeaways:
There are a lot of running backs in college football who get more headlines, but there might not be many better than the Duke sophomore. It was evident starting from the first drive, in which he went for 51 yards on 11 carries, ending it with a nine-yard touchdown run.
In the end, Sheppard finished with career-highs in carries (35) and rushing yards (227) while scoring twice.
The good news is that the quarterback didn't turn the ball over in his Duke debut. The bad news is that he struggled, finishing 13-of-27 for 131 yards. When opposing teams are able to stop Sheppard, Eget will have to be much better.

Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Kentucky Downs' really big-money races and some hot events for 2-year-olds compete on the weekend horse racing calendar that also includes a foreign docket -- the Arc previews in France, the start of Hong Kong's season and Korea's biggest day of horse racing.

Ryan Moore makes a first-ever appearance at Kentucky Downs on Saturday with his best chance to snag a winner, Causeway, in the $3 million Grade II Nashville Derby.
The Wootton Bassett colt won four straight races for Coolmore and trainer Aidan O'Brien before finishing a distant seventh in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris in his last start, which came on soft turf.
Three other tough foreigners are here, and the locals frankly look outgunned. But anything can happen over 1 3/16 miles on the winding, undulating course.

Aston Villa are now close to seeing Leon Bailey leave for Olympiacos after the British transfer window shut on 1 September. The Daily Express reports that the winger has found an alternative route out of Villa Park after a proposed move to Hull City collapsed late in the window.
Bailey had been left training alone at Bodymoor Heath after that failed switch, showing how far he had slipped from Unai Emery's plans. Now Olympiacos have stepped in with a permanent deal, and the winger is heading to Athens for a medical before completing the move. Reports indicate he will sign a contract running until June 2029.
Villa can no longer replace him from the English market, yet the club can still clear a difficult situation. Bailey's departure closes a chapter that had lost momentum.
Bailey's best spell came in 2023/24, when he produced 10 Premier League goals and 10 ****** ists, but that output has fallen away sharply. Across the 2024/25 and 2025/26 league campaigns, he scored just one goal. Last season brought 13 league appearances, mostly from the bench, with zero goals and one ****** ist, while his spell at Roma produced seven Serie A appearances without a goal.

Manchester United looked very good in the second half against Ipswich Town on Sunday, but the side's goals did not come from the forward line. Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo were the driving force behind the three goals, with the captain recording his first hat-trick in five years.
The front three of Matheus Cunha at striker and Marcus Rashford and Bryan Mbeumo on the flanks did not look poor. Cunha **** isted Bruno's first goal and Mbeumo finished an odd chip for the fifth and final goal, meanwhile Rashford had two excellent chances denied by the goalkeeper and last-ditch defending. There was balance, but it was still evidently a solution to a personnel problem.
Amad's preseason injury made the right wing options limited to Mbeumo, despite the Cameroonian's emergence as a good No. 9 option this season. Benjamin Sesko missed the entire preseason but has been fit enough to make appearances off the bench. Cunha, who typically played on the left last season, played as a No. 9 for Brazil at the World Cup and fit there with Rashford as a natural option on the left.
The options aren't bad for Michael Carrick to choose from. All three players have been flexible positionally in their careers and offer a balance of qualities. Rashford looked particularly comfortable playing with Luke Shaw again and he made a good effort out of possession to stay involved as well. He didn't get the goal his performance might have deserved, but overall it was a good homecoming.
Cunha was the only real odd fit, operating similarly to Bruno Fernandes and dropping into similar areas. It allowed the No. 10 to make good runs beyond the striker, but Cunha's lack of striker presence was felt at times, especially in the first half.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Brentford at Elland Road (kick-off 14:00 BST).
Here are the key lines from his news conference:
On the injuries in the squad, Farke said: "It's [Ilia] Gruev's second week training with the team so he's edging closer and closer. Also some good news was Gudmundsson and Gnonto - as it stands they will join us this afternoon [in training] for the first time after their injuries. We have to wait to see how their bodies reacts. Obviously, we just have two days but definitely good news."
On the likelihood of Gruev playing on Sunday, he said: "He has missed more or less four months without playing a game so we have to make a decision. Physically, he is edging closer and closer. He also looks good on the training pitch. If I need him, I would have no problems to call him to the squad. We have now, thank god, a situation where we don't have to rush Ilia."
On the club's transfer window so far, he said: "We are in a good position. Very pleased with our window so far. We will stay aware because the feeling is that we want to do something more. We're definitely in a good place. I like our window so far and all our signings are spot on. Early signs are great but we have a long season."

Real Madrid are expected to give Marc Cucurella his first start at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, with the summer signing in line to be the only alteration to Jose Mourinho's starting XI against Real Sociedad.
According to AS, Mourinho is not planning a major overhaul for Real Madrid's first home match of the 2026/27 La Liga season.
Instead, the Portuguese coach is expected to keep faith with a side close to his strongest available lineup, with Cucurella's introduction at left-back standing out as the key change.
The match could therefore offer the Bernabeu faithful their first proper look at one of the club's notable summer arrivals from the opening whistle.
Cucurella has already had his first taste of action in a Real Madrid shirt, coming off the bench against Espanyol, but Wednesday's clash against Real Sociedad is expected to mark his first start.

BEREA ― The Browns are about to find out who will be their opening-day starting quarterback.
Will it be Shedeur Sanders? Or will it be Deshaun Watson?

Paris Saint-Germain enter the season with the expectation that they should lift their sixth Ligue 1 ******* le in a row. However, this week hasn't been ideal preparation for the campaign. On Sunday, a defeat to RC Lens in the Trophée des Champions was followed by the news that the Parc des Princes was unusable for their opening game against Stade de Rennais, meaning this match would have to take place in Rennes.
Luis Enrique would be without Nuno Mendes for this game due to his suspension after he picked up a red card in the loss to Lens. This meant that summer signing Lucas Digne would be back in the starting line-up for tonight.
L'Équipe expects that Digne will be alone among the new recruits, with the rest of the high-profile summer signings: Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godts, and Ferran Torres on the bench.

With the continuous disaster that the NCAA created and put on itself, some more bad news on the Gonzaga Bulldogs'front.
According to court documents from the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, all Class of 2022 athletes from the state of Colorado ruling, except for those who have their own temporary restraining order or injunction until further state court order, are now ineligible after the NCAA stay was granted in the Ohio case.
That includes Gonzaga point guard Javon Bennett with the injunction now pending. He can attempt to join an existing state lawsuit or file a separate lawsuit, but there's no guarantee a judge will allow that.
The Zags technically have four open roster spots with all this fifth-year college eligibility nonsense going on in college athletics. They still await the outcome for point guard Nathan De Sousa of France's Cholet Basket and power forward/center Izan Almansa of Spain's Real Madrid.
To make the day even worse, Gonzaga is out of the lead guard Donovan Dent sweepstakes. The UCLA Bruins transfer guard will be joining coach Will Wade and the LSU Tigers, he told On3. After announcing his retirement from basketball in May and then unretiring in July, everyone thought Dent was headed to Spokane, Washington, once Mario Saint-Supery left the program for Spain's Valencia Basket of the EuroLeague.

Former Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman Tyler Biadasz was carted off the field during the Los Angeles Chargers' joint practice with the 49ers on Aug. 18, marking the second former UW standout to suffer a potentially serious NFL training camp injury thus far this season.
Biadasz went down when a 49ers player fell on his leg and stayed on the ground for nearly five minutes before getting helped off by a medical cart.
The center signed a three-year deal worth up to $30 million with the Chargers before the season, after he was a surprising cut by the Washington Commanders. The one-time Pro Bowler with the Dallas Cowboys is entering his seventh NFL season.
Biadasz, from Amherst High School, was a fourth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2020.
In a twist of cruel serendipity, former Badgers defensive lineman Matt Henningsen of the Denver Broncos – who was also lost last year in a joint practice against the 49ers with a torn Achilles – tore his Achilles again exactly one year to the date of last year's injury.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. had a two-run homer, an RBI double and scored four times, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 9-5 victory over the Athletics on Monday night.
Witt's 15th home run of the year was an estimated 390 feet to left-center field to give Kansas City a 5-1 lead. He added the double in the eighth inning.

Jac Caglinone hit two RBI singles for the Royals, one in the sixth and the other in the eighth to make it 9-4. Kyle Isbel added one in the third.

If you listen to the preseason predictions, Duke and head coach Manny Diaz might as well pack it up instead of trying to repeat as ACC champions. The Blue Devils were picked to finish 10th in the conference at ACC media days, while some are questioning whether they can get back to the heights of a nine-win season that they have achieved in the last two years.
In ESPN's preseason ranking of all 138 FBS teams, writer David Hale joined the pundits in predicting that Duke will fall back a bit this season, putting the Blue Devils all the way down in Tier 11 alongside rival programs such as Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, as well as Kansas and Arizona State, among others.
The main stat Hale brings up is last year's struggles on pass defense, noting that the Blue Devils allowed 5.86 yards per dropback when pressuring the opposing QB last season, which ranked 131st out of 136 teams.
And, of course, no article about Duke football would go without mentioning the fact that Diaz and his coaching staff must find a replacement for quarterback Darian Mensah, who entered the transfer portal at the last moment this offseason and is now the starter at ACC rival Miami.
The game is played on the field, though, so Diaz and his team will have their chance to prove these doubters wrong.

Lazio full-back Nuno Tavares stirred some controversy with his latest social media move, while Porto are obeserving his situation closely.
The 26-year-old has been playing his football in Rome since making the move from ****** nal in the summer of 2024. The Portuguese international enjoyed a stellar start to his Lazio stint, before being hampered by injuries. Last season, he was omitted from Maurizio Sarri's starting lineup after making costly blunders, only to be restored later in the campaign.
This summer, the Biancocelesti acquired the services of Alfonso Pedraza on a free transfer. The 30-year-old Spaniard has done enough in pre-season to convince Gennaro Gattuso to grant him a starting role, especially with Tavares struggling with another muscle injury. Therefore, many feel this is the right time for the club to cash in on the Lisbon native.
As noted by several sources, including La Lazio Siamo Noi, Tavares has deleted every post related to Lazio on his Instagram account. Many observers believe this could be a sign of dissatisfaction with his status at the club, or a come-and-get-me plea to his suitors.
As it happens, Italian football journalist Matteo Moretto is reporting Porto's interest in the wantaway full-back. The Portuguese giants have already been linked with the player on a few occasions earlier in the summer. Moreover, recent rumours claimed Lazio could swap him with AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, but the two clubs have yet to embark on serious talks.

The Kansas City Chiefs were unsuccessful in trying to end their preseason losing streak with Saturday's 20-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The loss raised concerns, as head coach Andy Reid told reporters that an offensive lineman went down with an injury during the game.
"As far as injuries go, it was just Chu Godrick had an ankle sprain," said Reid, "So, other than that, there were no other injuries."
The reserve offensive lineman left the game with the injury as the Chiefs were unable to overcome the Rams at Arrowhead Stadium. Godrick, a product of the NFL's International Player Pathway program since 2022, signed with the Chiefs as part of their developmental plans. He spent the next few years on the practice squad before being called up to the active roster last season.
"It was good to get a preseason game under our belt and play against somebody else. There were some good things, and some things we need to clean up," said Reid. "Obviously, penalties would be the number one thing we need to clean up. But we're able to get a good look at some of our young guys, and I thought there was some real production there on both sides of the ball from the young guys."
Another concern for both teams was the weather, as extremely hot temperatures opened the door to potential cramping and dehydration issues. Both were avoided, as Reid detailed the planning to prepare for extreme temperatures over 90 degrees on the field.
