An evolutionary development is raising alarms among scientists: Two of the world's most destructive crop pests have begun interbreeding — creating destructive hybrids that could threaten food supplies.
According to New Scientist, researchers discovered that two notorious agricultural pests — the cotton bollworm and the corn earworm — have successfully interbred in Brazil, exchanging genes that make them more resistant to pesticides in genetically modified crops.
Both insects are moth species whose caterpillars feed on crops. The corn earworm is native to the Americas and attacks corn, tomato

A plant used in Brazilian medicine has scientific potential to help people with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Researchers tested Joseph’s Coat (Alternanthera littoralis) in lab studies and found it reduced swelling, protected joint tissue, and appeared safe at the doses used.
Joseph’s Coat grows naturally along Brazil’s coast. Local communities have traditionally used it to ease inflammation, infections and parasites. Until now, however, there has not been solid scientific evidence showing it works or is safe.
The new study was carried out by teams from universities across Bra

Brazil’s culture ministry has given its blessing to an art project that aims to turn Bitcoin price volatility into impromptu musical masterpieces.
The ministry has approved the project’s plans to raise $195,000 from private sector firms and donors, Brazil’s Livecoins reported.
However, the campaign must wrap up funding by the end of the year.
If the project, spearheaded by the real estate and sports firm Rede Conexão Brasília, receives enough funding, it will culminate in a live orchestra “making Bitcoin music” during a performance in the city of Brasília.

BELEM, Brazil (AP) — Global efforts to curb emissions of the potent but short-lived heat-trapping gas methane are doing about as poorly as the more prevalent carbon dioxide, but there's hope for the next five years, U.N. officials said Monday.
Methane emissions can be a “hand brake” for slowing greenhouse gas pollution and temperatures, said Martina Otto, head of the U.N.'s climate and clean air commission for methane pollution. That's because methane from fossil fuels traps nearly 30 times the heat of the more common carbon dioxide, but because they don't last nearly as long in the air, fast
