In his review of Transformers: War for Cybertron, Dan Stapleton referred to "the tingly nerd-joy of hearing original Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen's authoritative dialogue". Every time the character appeared on screen, as he did many times in videogames like Transformers: Devastation and Fall of Cybertron or the middling movies, it was thrilling to hear him and realize, yes, they got the "real" Optimus Prime.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Cullen has died at the age of 85. He joins a string of particularly beloved celebrities to have died in recent days, including Dolly Parton, Yayoi Kusama, and Red Alert 3 star and camp icon Tim Curry.
While most famous for his recurring role as Optimus Prime, Cullen also voiced Venger in Dungeons & Dragons, Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and provided the menacing clicking sounds for the Predator.

Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor whose deep, measured baritone gave Optimus Prime his voice across four decades of the Transformers franchise, died at his Los Angeles home He was 85. No cause of death was confirmed, and the passing was first reported by TMZ.
His family said in a statement, "Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family — and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, and always remember: be strong enough to be gentle."
That last phrase — "be strong enough to be gentle" — was the advice Cullen's brother Larry gave him when he auditioned for the role of Optimus Prime in 1984. Cullen based the character's voice on Larry, a Marine veteran, deciding that a true leader's strength should carry warmth rather than aggression. The audition won him the long-running role.
Cullen's animation career began well before Transformers, voicing characters across Pac-Man, Rainbow Brite, Voltron, The Addams Family, and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers as Monterey Jack, and provided the vocal effects of the Predator in the ep 1987 film of the same name. He was also the voice of Eeyore in Disney's Winnie the Pooh properties for years, a role he described as among his favourites. Disney later turned to Brad Garrett for a couple of 2018 productions, though Cullen remained the character's primary voice elsewhere.

Kellan Lutz has spoken about the mental toll of ending the Twilight franchise and unsuccessfully auditioning for other films.
Lutz, 41, played Emmett Cullen across all five Twilight films, and despite the $3.3 billion success of the vampire franchise, the actor struggled to land other franchise roles, some of which were for Marvel Studios.
The entertainer appeared on the Tuesday (August 11) episode of podcast Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum and discussed the aftermath of Twilight along with his succeeding auditions. The Twilight run ended in 2012 with the fifth installment Breaking Dawn - Part 2.
COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess.
Around the 44-minute mark of the video above, Lutz shared that he received advice from his Stick It costar Jeff Bridges to "make your life outside of the industry" rather than let the business "chew you up and spit you out."

Kyle Schwarber deposited a pair of homers into the most iconic cornfield on Thursday in Dyersville, Iowa, as his Philadelphia Phillies pummeled the Minnesota Twins 7-1 in MLB's first Field of Dreams Game since 2022.
The matchup signified the return of the specialty game, which is a nod to the 1989 film. The event had taken a three-year hiatus while a new permanent ballpark was built on the site. But the corn-infused affair will be back next year, MLB and Universal Pictures announced Friday.
In 2027, the Field of Dreams Game will feature the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals, with NBC Sports providing coverage of a contest set for Aug. 12. This year, the event was streamed exclusively on Netflix.
"We are thrilled to showcase our athletes through one of Major League Baseball's most cherished events and help to grow the game to a worldwide audience," Royals president of business operations Cullen Maxey said, per MLB.com.
"Royals territory already covers the Midwest, including Dyersville, so this is a natural fit that provides Royals fans a chance to cheer on the home team in a magical setting."

Suki Waterhouse has spent eight years with Robert Pattinson without watching the movie franchise that turned him into an international star.
Pattinson played vampire Edward Cullen in the original 2008 film and its four sequels, which were released through 2012.
During an appearance on In Your Dreams With Owen Thiele, the singer and actress revealed that she has never seen any of the five Twilight films.
Waterhouse said she intends to correct that eventually, but she has no interest in experiencing the vampire saga alone.
Host Owen Thiele introduced the subject by asking Waterhouse whether she supported Team Edward or Team Jacob. "I've never seen it," she responded. After Thiele expressed disbelief, Waterhouse confirmed that she had not watched the films but promised that she would "one day."

Liam Cullen's Swansea City exit brings to an end a 19-year ******* ociation with the club he joined as an eight-year-old.
Regarded as a player to watch throughout his time in Swansea's academy, Cullen delivered on his potential, making 207 senior appearances across the past eight years.
His departure leaves a hole in the dressing room that will be tricky to fill given his length of service and commitment to the club he grew up supporting.
Swansea are also losing a dependable performer, one Vitor Matos described as the player "all the coaches love" earlier this year.
Cullen has faced criticism from some fans at times through the years, despite his obvious commitment to the cause.

The Boston Bruins made seven selections in the 2026 NHL Draft. They went goalie first, before rattling off three forwards in a row. It wasn't until the 157th pick that they finally drafted a defenseman. In the sixth round, they went back between the creases, selecting a second goaltender.
But in the seventh round, with the 216th overall pick and the team's seventh and final selection, the Bruins selected defenseman Cullen McCrate from the Fargo Force.
McCrate is a 19-year-old blue liner who spent the 2025-26 season playing with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He played 61 games with the Force, recording 10 goals and 20 ***** ists. It was the second season he spent in Fargo, as he tallied 34 appearances the season prior.
He is listed at just a touch under 6-foot-2 and right at 200 pounds.

The final pick is in!
Cullen McCrate comes to us from the USHL’s Fargo Force, though like many USHL guys the Bruins draft, he will be going to College Hockey this fall; headed to Michigan State.
McCrate wasn’t really ranked by anybody but hey, he’s a 7th rounder anyway. It’s all the more reason for him to surprise us later on, right?
Let’s all welcome Cullen to the Black and Gold!

After trading up to get Tommy Bleyl on Day 1, then adding forward Adam Edstrom from the New York Rangers, the Predators have traded the No. 160 pick (fifth round) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fifth-round pick in the 2028 draft.
This is a simple pick swap, with the Predators punting the pick to next year.
The Predators now have nine picks in the 2026 NHL Draft. Here's every pick as they happen:

Approaching 20 years of attending the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (and/or Manx Grand Prix) races, I have a suspicion that the TT's history will someday be divided into two distinct eras.
Before the movie. And after the movie.
Upon seeing Channing Tatum and Eve Hewson in race suits and producer Brad Pitt surrounded by film crews at work on "The Isle of Man" at the 2026 TT, that thought kept creeping into my head. While spectating from a rickety platform at Rhencullen with my main man from Manchester, Kes Scott. In the parc fermé talking to racers like Shaun Anderson. Bopping through Douglas for another spectacular dinner at Peter Ingrassia's Nuovo Isola. And at my favorite local pub, The Woodbourne. Especially at The Woody.

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen says coach Nienaber is "fully committed" to the province who are "lucky to have" him.
The two-time World Cup winner with the Springboks had cast doubt on his Leinster future earlier in the week after claiming he does not feel valued by the media and fans in Ireland.
However, Cullen is hopeful he will remain as part of the coaching staff and that Nienaber's comments may have been misunderstood.
"I think what he was referring to is there are no guarantees in sport, is there?" Cullen said.
"So, I think what he is trying to get across, is that when there is a lot of flak on the team from media, sometimes a club will make changes, and I think that is what he was referring to.
