It's no secret that ESPN host Stephen A. Smith and NBA star LeBron James don't get along.
On Monday, Smith defended James after President Donald Trump called James "racist" last week when taking questions from reporters.
This, even for a hot take machine like Smith, was "beyond the pale."
"It's embarrassing," Smith said in a video posted on YouTube. "You're the commander-in-chief, you're the president of the United States, and you're going to come out and you're going to call this black man, who's universally recognized one of the greatest athletes who have ever lived, who has been an upstanding citizen, somebody I don't get along with, and I'm still willing to concede he's great."
Smith argued that Trump is resorting to calling James racist simply because James has never supported Trump politically.

Joe Rogan claims there will be little debate in the future that Israel committed a "genocide" in Gaza.
The veteran comic made the claim during the Wednesday episode of his podcast, in which he said the idea of genocide by Israel would become "universally accepted."
Rogan said he can't see how anyone can support Israel's war in Gaza, even when considering it was spurred by the Hamas terror attack in October 2023 where about 1,200 people were slaughtered and hundreds of hostages were taken.
"Like, how could anybody defend that? I don't even know how many people are dead," Rogan said. "You have a complete wipeout of a city — like 90% of Gaza is gone, or whatever the percentage is. You look at the buildings — you look at what it used to look like, [and] you look at what it looks like now — like, this is defensible?"
He got onto the topic after his guest, actor Tim Robbins, complained it was "nuts" ex-wife Susan Sarandon lost her agent and had a hard time finding work because of her criticism of Israel and comments after the 10/7 attack.

Liverpool's search for attacking reinforcements continues to dominate the transfer conversation, yet not every reported target has generated universal excitement. During the latest Media Matters podcast for Anfield Index, host Dave Davis was joined by Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele, with much of the discussion centred on Liverpool's pursuit of attacking options and whether Chelsea winger Pedro Neto represents the right fit.
While Bradley Barcola remains Liverpool's priority, the conversation also examined reports linking the Reds with Chelsea's Portugal international. Steele's verdict was measured and refreshingly direct.
Dave Davis referenced reports from Steele's Daily Mail colleague Kieran Gill, noting that Liverpool and Manchester City had both been credited with interest in Chelsea forward Pedro Neto. Davis pointed out that Chelsea "wouldn't allow the winger to leave cheap", especially in a market where the values attached to players such as Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande have continued to rise.
Steele confirmed the rumours have been circulating for some time.
"He is one of these names that keeps coming round and round."

James's Sixers are expected to get the maximum 34 national game telecasts/streams across Disney's ABC/ESPN, NBCUniversal's NBC Sports/Peacock, and Amazon's Prime Video during the upcoming NBA season, say sources. That would more than double the 14 national games that Joel Embiid's team was featured in during the 2025-6 campaign.

Praetorian Capital, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter of 2026, the Praetorian Capital Fund LLC (the "Fund") depreciated by 4.39% net of fees. The firm anticipates significant volatility from quarter to quarter due to the Fund's concentrated portfolio approach and emphasis on asymmetric opportunities. Both the Event-Driven book and the fund's core portfolio declined moderately in the quarter. The letter highlighted the market's complexity and noted a setback in the portfolio this quarter despite strong first-quarter earnings. Conversely, the letter also noted that the AI buildout represented a substantial capital misallocation. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Praetorian Capital highlighted Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI). Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) is an educational institution that provide training and support services for students in transportation, skilled trades and healthcare education programs. On July 17, 2026, Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) closed at $40.31 per share. One-month return of Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) was 0.27%, and its shares gained 25.17% over the past 52 weeks. Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) has a market capitalization of $2.25 billion.
Praetorian Capital stated the following regarding Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Technical Colleges; Lincoln Educational Services (LINC – USA) and Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI). These two technical colleges are helping to train the next generation of skilled tradespeople and medical workers. As AI reduces the demand for office workers, many millions of existing workers must be reskilled, while high school graduates will naturally seek out better job opportunities that offer higher wages, with less career risk.
LINC and UTI are the two largest technical colleges in the US. I expect them to continue opening new campuses and growing student counts. Based on management guidance, they're both quite cheap looking out a few years, net of startup costs for new campuses. I think they'll dramatically overshoot guidance in terms of new student starts, utilization and recruitment costs, leading to substantial margin growth on relatively fixed-cost structures."

Semiconductor investors have been here before. After a scorching run, chip stocks have tumbled again, with memory names sliding more than 20% into bear market territory and the broader group shedding hundreds of billions in value.
In the current artificial intelligence (AI) cycle, that kind of drop has repeatedly turned out to be a tech buying opportunity rather than a warning. The question worth asking now is whether the pattern will hold one more time.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Throughout this cycle, sharp sell-offs in chip stocks have tended to reverse quickly. When Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) spooked the market with cautious guidance earlier this year, the sector shed more than $1 trillion in value in a matter of days, then rebounded as investors remembered that AI infrastructure spending was still climbing. The reason the dips kept getting bought is simple: Demand kept reaccelerating faster than supply. Global chip sales hit a record in 2025 and are forecast to jump again in 2026, with AI-related chips accounting for roughly half of the total. As long as data center build-outs stayed hungry and memory stayed in short supply, every pullback looked cheap in hindsight.
Here is the sober counterpoint. Semiconductors reside in a highly cyclical corner of the market, and history has shown that not all rebounds are quick or universal. Past downturns have carried the sector down 30%, 50%, even 80% from its highs, and those busts always followed a familiar script: Surging demand invites a wave of new capacity, and eventually supply catches up and prices fall. Warnings that the memory shortage could flip into oversupply by 2027 or 2028 are getting louder. A 20% dip is a gift right up until the cycle turns, at which point the same "buy the dip" instinct becomes a trap.

Jesy Nelson's twin daughters were diagnosed with SMA Type 1, a severe condition affecting muscle strength and development
Nelson's recent campaign secured over 150,000 signatures, leading to universal newborn testing for SMA in the U.K. starting this year
Early diagnosis allows for life-changing genetic treatments before symptoms appear, significantly improving outcomes for affected babies
Jesy Nelson tearfully shared that the U.K. will begin universal testing for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a milestone victory she'd been campaigning for ever since her 14-month-old twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were diagnosed with the devastating muscular disorder.
"They're old enough to understand this moment, and they can understand that their story was part of a huge change," the Little Mix alum, 35, shared in a July 16 Instagram post after news broke that an SMA test will be included in routine newborn screening for all babies in the U.K., starting this year.

Barça Universal can exclusively report that Aymeric Laporte is one of the centre-backs most appreciated by Hansi Flick.
It must be remembered that while signing a striker remains Barcelona's priority this summer, the club has not ruled out adding an experienced defender should the market present a favourable opportunity.
It is in this regard that the Spanish defender has appeared within the discussion at Spotify Camp Nou.
At this stage, however, the Athletic Club veteran is viewed more as a contingency option than an immediate transfer objective.
As such, Barcelona believe Laporte possesses many qualities that Flick wants in an experienced central defender.

People love lists. Even if they don't, the safest bet in the world is that the proliferation of list-based content will continue unabated. They drive conversation because, at their core, they are profoundly and proudly imperfect. There is no "correct" way to rank the top 150 high school football players in America or the concession offerings at all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. If there were, the perfect list would drive zero conversation as consumers would nod silently through every paragraph and congratulate the list-maker on a job well done while clicking off the page. Getting it as right as possible is a goal but it's not the ultimate goal.
That's to drive conversation.
Admit it. When you see a list you instinctively take up armor to see what they got wrong and where you disagree with the ordering. This morning I experienced that buzz when I hopped over to see what ESPN had cooked up for its ordering of the top NFL quarterbacks for 2026. It's the latest installment of a series where they asked league executives, coaches and scouts to help in the work of slotting top players at 11 different positions. And since this is the most important one in all of sports, there are obviously going to be different points of view and strong emotions.
To no one's surprise, Josh Allen is No. 1, a spot over Patrick Mahomes. Matthew Stafford sits at No. 3, followed by Joe Burrow. That's where things get a bit strange. Lamar Jackson checks in as the last top-five QB with Dak Prescott at No. 6. Justin Herbert is at No. 7 and Drake Maye, on the heels of a Super Bowl appearance, has climbed to No. 8. Jared Goff edges out Caleb Williams as the NFC North signal-callers make up the rest of the list. Super Bowl champion Sam Darnold is among the honorable mentions that also includes Jayden Daniels, Jordan Love, Brock Purdy, Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawrence and Jalen Hurts.
Let this be a reminder just how hard it is to be someone one who is universally perceived to be in the top half of NFL starting quarterbacks. Hurts barely makes it and Mayfield isn't entirely comfortable in his spot either.

Some Los Angeles Lakers fans seem a bit skeptical about the signing of guard Quentin Grimes. Whether they aren't sure whether his offensive game will fit alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, whether he's a good enough defender against players at certain positions or feel he's being overpaid at $60 million over four years, his signing hasn't been met with universal approval.
But Grimes is a capable player on both ends of the floor. The 6-foot-5, 26-year-old averaged 13.4 points a game this past season and is regarded as a plus defender, making him the type of two-way wing the Lakers have badly needed over the last few years.
One bone of contention with Grimes is whether he can be a point-of-attack defender or if he's more of a wing defender. According to a recent article by Dan Woike of The Athletic, coach JJ Redick, who is reportedly a fan of Grimes, plans to ****** ign the player to guard opposing ball-handlers.
"Grimes will be slotted in as a point-of-attack defender with plenty of offensive game, a bet on him as a two-way talent. Team and league sources have long known JJ Redick to be a fan of Grimes, who was a priority target this summer."
If this plan works, it could greatly elevate L.A.'s defense, which will also immensely benefit from the trade for center Walker Kessler, one of the NBA's best shot-blockers and rebounders.

Hello, and welcome to the 2026 White Sox MLB draft tracker!
Below, you'll find every pick the White Sox make, with links to our individual stories on site for the five picks in the first four rounds.
Right off the bat, the White Sox dispelled any notion that they would zag instead of zig, picking the longtime and near-universal No. 1 prospect in a top-heavy class, Roch Cholowsky.
While last year was a "shortstop" draft, 2026 went hard for hitters, particularly outfielders (eight of the first 20 picks, and every pick from No. 5-9). Just three pitchers went in the Top 20, and just one arm (Jackson Flora, Giants, No. 4) before pick 18.
All of the first nine position player prospects this year (through pick No. 14) are shortstops. Getting deeper into the round, 12 of 21 picks were shortstops, still almost exclusively among position players.

Switzerland's well-earned reward for acting is ejection from game and elimination from World Cup originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The tears were real. Switzerland striker Breel Embolo no longer was acting by then. He covered his face in horror, aware everything he’d dreamed about at the start of the day, at the start of the 2026 World Cup, had been demolished in an instant.
First, referee Joao Pedro Silva Pinheiro held a yellow card toward the Kansas City sky; then he showed considerable dexterity by pulling a red card from his pocket and signaling to Embolo he no longer would be involved in Saturday's quarterfinal game against Argentina.
Embolo’s offense: simulation.

For the first time since 1994, the FIFA World Cup returned to North America, with most of the games being played in 11 of the United States’ biggest stadiums, in addition to five venues in Mexico and Canada. Appreciation for the United States Men’s National Team, which got out of the group stage before falling to Belgium, was widespread – but hardly universal.
According to a poll done by Freebets.com, a sports wagering platform based in London, nearly one-third of Americans are rooting for foreign teams over the United States. Various factors might explain this trend, which was documented even before President Trump weighed in on a controversial red card against a U.S. striker, ranging from the high number of recent immigrants in the United States to the fact that America has never won the World Cup.
Yet the most sobering fact is that on America’s 250th birthday young Americans don’t feel the tug of the red, white, and blue on their heartstrings. About half of those under 30, mostly Gen Z, have been rooting for a foreign team.
The survey collected responses from 1,800 Americans who follow World Cup soccer, 66% of whom are men. At 49%, Gen Z respondents were more likely than other generations to support another country’s team, followed by millennials (42%), and Gen X (31%). Even among flag-waving baby boomers, 26% say they prefer another team.
There are various factors leading to these preferences, although heritage has the most influence. Across 16 states, Mexico’s team claimed the favorite spot, most predominantly in California, Texas, Florida, and New York. Among Hispanic respondents, 43% favored Mexico, indicating a connection rooted in ancestry.

Celtics make clear Jayson Tatum trade decision after Jaylen Brown deal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It would be absolutely insane for the Boston Celtics to move on from Jayson Tatum, but as we've seen over the past few years in the NBA, nothing can be counted out. Ultimately, it feels like the Celtics made their one big move in quite some time in terms of trading star players, sending Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers.
However, because of this situation and all the questions about Philadelphia now, some have pondered whether Tatum might be available.
However, according to the latest report, when teams have called on the Celtics superstar, they have been shut down instantly.
"ESPN's Shams Charania noted that teams were calling the Celtics to gauge a Jayson Tatum trade after the Jaylen Brown deal, but were universally shut down. There will be extra spotlight on Tatum this year, as the team's 1A option no longer has a 1B. The Celtics are still open to making a trade, but they're viewing the ******* ignment as building a roster to support Tatum, not to bring in another star to split shots with him. Forget Trey Murphy, the targets are more likely to be Herb Jones, Keldon Johnson or a player of that range," Sean Deveny wrote.

Even in the context of a World Cup not exactly short on controversy, the so-called hydration breaks mandated by FIFA have caused an outsized uproar.
World soccer’s governing body announced in December last year that every match at the 2026 World Cup would include a hydration break at the mid-point of each half, effectively dividing games into quarters.
Fox, the English-language broadcasters of the tournament in the United States, have been one of the biggest beneficiaries of hydration breaks, which have allowed them to smuggle in more adverts.
One study suggests that Fox are likely to have extracted at least $250m in extra advertising revenue in the six minutes across both hydration breaks, potentially as high as $600m. For a TV deal that cost $485m, that is an extraordinary upside.
Fans, unsurprisingly, are almost universally opposed, seeing it as a cash grab by FIFA and broadcasters alike that disrupts the flow of a momentum-based sport. The breaks are roundly booed in-stadium.

Carlo Ancelotti wasn’t universally popular. A five-time Champions League-winning coach, the only man to win a league ***** le in each of Europe’s big five leagues and one of the most decorated bosses ever – but it wasn’t enough for some.
Although the reaction to the former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Milan coach taking charge of Brazil had little to do with his CV and more to do with what his hire as the first non-native to take charge of the Selecao symbolised.
The South Americans are the World Cup’s most-successful team with five previous wins and have a proud heritage of producing a conveyor belt of homegrown players and coaches who have consistently beaten the globe’s best.
To betray that by becoming only the third former World Cup-winning nation – alongside Uruguay and England – to turn to a foreign coach is hard for some to take, regardless of Ancelotti’s pedigree.
