Saturday evening brought big news: Vikings legend Harrison Smith, who never officially announced his retirement, is coming back for a 15th season with the franchise that drafted him in the first round back in 2012.
The fan reaction to that news has been almost entirely positive. Smith is an all-time great who has played at a high level across several different eras of Vikings football. About a month into this season, he'll pass Carl Eller and Fred ****** to move into third on the franchise's games played leaderboard, trailing only Jim Marshall and Mick Tingelhoff. He's an obvious Ring of Honor lock with a real chance to end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
And Smith's return isn't just about legacy. He can clearly still play, as we saw in his dominant performance against the Lions last Christmas Day.
Amidst the excitement, there have been a few Vikings fans who have pushed back. Their specific complaints have to do with the contract the team gave Smith for his 15th season. It's a one-year, $12.25 million deal that has incentives up to $16.25 million if Minnesota wins the Super Bowl. For some, that price tag is too steep for a 37-year-old safety.
There were enough of those tweets that a former longtime teammate of Smith's took notice. Anthony Barr, a first-round pick two years after Smith who played alongside him for nine seasons, took to X/Twitter to put those fans on blast late on Saturday night after a couple posts about his UCLA Bruins' Week 1 win over Cal.

This year's Week 1 matchup for Ohio State wasn't nearly as exciting as last year's, but the Buckeyes came out on top either way. When the dust settled, Smith did everything he needed to do in the first half. In total, he hauled in eight passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. If that seems blah, it's his 12th 100-yard game, and seventh multi-touchdown game in his storied career.
With that, he moved closer to owning the Ohio State triple crown of records. He now sits 35 receptions, 190 yards, and seven touchdowns away from sitting atop the leaderboards in all three categories.
It was another dominant game from the player widely considered among the best in the country. His first catch was a 48-yard touchdown in which he pinned the ball to his facemask with just his right hand. There is plenty of great football in his near future; that's for sure.

Transfer Rudy Sautron was expected to have a big impact on the Tennessee men's golf program. Little did he know that it would be felt immediately.
The Nebraska transfer was stellar for the Volunteers on Tuesday, signing for 7-under 63 in the final round of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate at Fox Den Country Club to help the hosts storm from behind and claim their home opener for the second year in a row. Sautron finished second individually, teammate Jackson Herrington placed T-7, and Tennessee, down its No. 1 player in Tyler Watts due to the Walker Cup, won by four shots over Memphis.
Tennessee entered the final round trailing by six but carded an impressive 14-under performance, the best score of the final round by eight strokes. Freshman Pennson Badgett signed for a 2-under 68 while Christian Pardue also finished under par with a 69 on Tuesday, and Tennessee jumped six spots on the leaderboard to begin the 2026-27 season with a win.
Sautron was expected to be one of the biggest-impact transfers this season, and right away his addition was pivotal for Tennessee. With world No. 3 amateur Watts in Ireland, it was Sautron and Herrington, the 2025 U.S. Amateur runner-up, leading the way for the final-round charge up the leaderboard.
Chattanooga's Evan Rogers claimed medalist honors at 10 under, topping Sautron by a shot. Second-team preseason All-American Carson Bertagnole, a sophomore at North Carolina, claimed third at 8 under.

More than a dozen Wall Street ***** ysts raised their price targets on Nvidia after its bullish report. Now as a new week in the stock market kicks off, shares of the AI giant take aim at a new buy point in an early stage cup with handle, putting certain technical clues in focus.
In its latest report, Nvidia posted another quarter of stellar growth. Revenue rose 85% to $81.6 billion. Earnings spiked 130% to $1.87 per share. For the full fiscal year, ***** ysts forecast 89% sales growth to $407.27 billion and a 94% earnings increase to $9.27 a share.

After hitting three home runs in a single game for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, the Mets decided Mark Vientos was ready to return from his rehab ******* ignment for their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
Not only that, but interim manager Andy Green decided to ride the hot hand and slotted the slugger right into the lineup, batting cleanup as the designated hitter in his first game back. Good thing he did, too, because Vientos stayed hot and rewarded his manager with a solo home run that was the difference in New York's 3-2 win.
"It felt great," Vientos said about not only the home run, but being back with the team after a long time away. "Felt great to come back and contribute in some way and a home run is always cool so it felt great for sure."
The home run, a 418-foot blast to center field, was Vientos' 12th of the season and even though he's had a disappointing season this year, Vientos reminded everybody of the raw power he possesses.
In fact, despite playing in just 74 games, Vientos is seventh on the team in home runs and just two away from being tied for third. If he keeps up his pace over the last few days, he'll be near the leaderboard in no time.

Alker made four consecutive birdies on the back nine en route to a final-round 4-under 68 to hold off a big-name leaderboard and run away with The Ally Challenge crown at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club on Sunday, Aug. 30. It was Alker's 13th victory on the 50-and-older PGA Tour Champions tour — including his third this season and his second in as many weeks.
Alker, 55, from New Zealand, took sole possession of the lead with a birdie at the par-4 12th hole, then expanded it with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 13th hole, as Michael Block, the one-time viral sensation, made bogey.
"Perfect number," Alker said of his second-shot, 3-wood approach from 245 yards into the 13th hole, where the momentum really swung to his corner. "Worked out well."

Rory McIlroy was feeling good in the third round of the Tour Championship.
The two-time Masters winner was in form, carding a 7-under score of 63 and skyrocketing up the leaderboard on Saturday, Aug. 29. He started the day near the bottom in 23rd and found himself tied for third after 18 holes at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta in the third and final event of the FedEx Cup.
Like his performance in the previous rounds, McIlroy started off with a bogey, this time on the second hole. Then, he rebounded with four birdies on the front nine and five in the last nine holes for a total of nine birdies. He had three straight birdies in holes No. 15, 16 and 17 to secure his overall score of -10.
Since he had an earlier tee time, McIlroy will now sit and wait to see how his score holds up. Ryan Gerard and Viktor Hovland were the top of the leaderboard after Friday's second round with a score of 10-under. At the time of publication, McIlroy sits tied in fourth place. Gerard has surged slightly ahead with two early birdies to bring his score to -12 and take the lead on his own.
McIlroy has won the Tour Championship three times, in 2016, 2019 and 2022. His second straight Masters win in April was his only PGA Tour victory of this season.

The field was re-ordered after 36 holes and due to J.J. Spaun's withdrawal, the field is 29 so it's Robert MacIntyre's turn to play solo. Min Woo Lee played most of Thurday solo and shot 62. Cameron Young played alone Friday and shot 62.

ATLANTA — Ryan Gerard hit it well enough for five relatively easy birdies Friday and dropped a surprise from just inside 80 feet for another, giving him a 5-under 65 and a share of the 36-hole lead with Viktor Hovland at the season-ending Tour Championship.
Hovland had one of five birdies on the peninsula-green 15th hole, a par 3 at only 155 yards but tucked to the left near a sharp slope that feeds off the putting surface. He had a 66 to join Gerard at 10-under 130 going into the weekend.
Right behind? Just about everybody.
That includes Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player who had a 67 and was two back. And it included Cameron Young, in last place after the first round and atop the leaderboard for much of the day after a 62. He also wound up two behind.
Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup each shot 67 and were one behind at 9-under 131.

Cameron Young birdied seven out of nine holes during the middle of Friday's second round in Atlanta, charging up the Tour Championship leaderboard a day removed after being tied in last place.
He eagled at par-5 18th to complete an 8-under 62 and temporarily catch first round leader Min Woo Lee, who completed his first hole a few minutes before Young's day ended.
It was a remarkable turn of event for Young, who was just three players in the field to card an opening round 70. He bogeyed three of his first five holes and never recovered Thursday, despite a Round 1 scoring average that dipped below 67.
The difference a day makes.
Round 2 was the complete opposite for the 2026 Players champ, who was the first player off the tee and posted a 30 on his front nine behind a string of three straight birdies from holes Nos. 4 through 6.
