West Bromwich Albion left-back Callum Styles has said he has taken on more of a leadership role in the side after the departures of several experienced players and the arrival of younger talent during the summer transfer window.
Seven new arrivals at The Hawthorns were aged 23 or younger, while three players aged over 30 made their exits this summer alongside Karlan Grant and Kristian Bielik, both 28, and 27-year-old Josh Maja.
The plan to bring more youth into the team means Styles, 26, is one of the older members of the squad.
"I think that's natural [to step into leadership] when you've played a lot of games in the Championship and you're getting older season by season," Styles told BBC Radio WM.
"Quite a few of us that were here last year feel like it's our role to then get the new lads adjusted to the league, to the team and to the physicality as quickly as possible.

On the two-month anniversary of Juventus Women hiring Isaac Guerrero as their new head coach, the Spanish tactician got his new-look squad past the final hurdle necessary to see them qualify for the Women's Champions League league phase once again.
For some, that was going to be quite the task with so much turnover this summer and Guerrero having little time to get to work with his new team before the qualification process got underway last month.
But in front of the hometown crowd — and some very notable front office member from both the men's and women's sporting area — in Biella on Wednesday night, Guerrero's Bianconere got the result they needed, a 1-1 draw, against Austrian side St. Pölten to qualify for the UWCL league phase. Portuguese midfielder Tatiana Pinto scored Juventus Women's lone goal of the night five minutes before halftime, but it was the 3-0 victory last week in Austria that allowed the Bianconere to see out the game and claim the 4-1 advantage on aggregate in the final round of the qualification path.
And with it came a ticket into the 16-team league phase — which is in effect for a second season after they made the switch to replicate the men's setup at the beginning of last season's competition.
Juve got through the four-team mini tournament last month. They then got a much less complicated draw against St. Pölten as compared to two years ago when they had to go through a Paris Saint-Germain side that was one of the last teams standing the season prior to make the group stage.

Albeit they've conceded five goals from their opening two Premier League matches, Xabi Alonso seems to have Chelsea back on track after a dodgy 2025/26 campaign as the Blues have opened their season with three wins on the bounce. They beat Fulham 3-2 for their Premier League opener, topped Luton Town 2-0 in the Carabao Cup, and most recently beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-3 in the league. While the former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager will certainly be hoping for more solidity in his defense, three straight wins is not a bad start to life in the English top flight at all.
Per statistics provided by OptaJoe, Alonso has become only the fourth manager to have his side open up the season with seven or more goals in his first two Premier League matches, and that's not even counting the scored against Luton Town in the EFL Cup. The other three managers to have done this are Bobby Robson in 1999 with Newcastle United, Michael Laudrup with Swansea City in 2012, and Marcelo Bielsa with Leeds United in 2020. Alonso joins an elite list of managers in a start that's breathed an air of reassurance after there was heavy speculation as to whether or not he made the right decision to join Chelsea in hi post-Real Madrid job search.
After his unprecedented Bundesliga ****** le campaign with Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023/24 season, Alonso was a man in HIGH demand throughout Europe and he was someone who was even on Bayern's radar at the time when it became clear they'd need to replace Thomas Tuchel. The who's who of European giants were all keen to try to line him up as their next manager, but Alonso had made the decision to stay with Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season and then ultimately wound up at Real Madrid to replace Álvaro Arbeloa.
Ironically enough, the pair of Spaniards will not be competing against one another in the Premier League as Arbeloa is currently serving as Fulham manager, though his start to life in England has not gone as swimmingly as it has for Alonso as Fulham lost their opening two league matches of the season, the first of which to Alonso's Chelsea and the second of which to Sunderland.

PEORIA — Illinois football is ready to launch the 2026 season with an opener against University of Alabama-Birmingham on Thursday night.
The Fighting Illini have carved out three straight winning seasons under head coach Bret Bielema, capped by a 9-4 effort last season that ended in a Music City Bowl victory.
Now they'll face UAB for the first time ever in an 8 p.m. kick at Gies Memorial Stadium.
The game carries a massive point spread, with Illinois favored by 27.5 points in most betting services.

When the senior wide receiver talked to the media on Monday at the Smith Center, it was his first time speaking with reporters since the start of training camp.
Clement, who enters his second season with Bret Bielema's program, wore a green no-contact jersey during part of training camp. He reportedly suffered a concussion in drills.
Clement is not on the school's injury list and is expected to play in this week's season opener against UAB with kickoff set for 8 p.m. on Thursday from Gies Memorial Stadium.

Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik is confident the Bluebirds can reach the Championship play-offs.
Bielik joined from West Brom last week and was pleased with his debut in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United, but felt his new side deserved all three points.
The 28-year-old thinks Cardiff are capable of beating any team in the Championship if they iron out a few issues at both ends of the pitch.
Cardiff face unbeaten QPR at Loftus Road on Wednesday, 2 September (19:45 BST), and Bielik hopes they can build momentum with their first league win since promotion.

ATLANTA (AP) — Idan Toklomati and Liel Abada each scored a goal, Kristijan Kahlina had three saves, and Charlotte FC beat Atlanta United 2-0 on Saturday night.
Allan Saint-Maximin, a designated player and former French youth international who signed with Charlotte on July 13, finished with two ****** ists.
Charlotte (10-7-5) is unbeaten in four straight and has just one loss in its last nine games.
Saint-Maximin, on the counter-attack, darted past a defender and bounced a cross from the left side to the back post, where Pep Biel played a first-touch pass back to Toklomati for a sliding finish from point-blank range to open the scoring in the 22nd minute. Nürnberg extended their winning start to the season with their fourth win in all competitions. Miroslav Klose's side scored three first-half goals on their way to beating Arminia Bielefeld 4-1.
Mohamed Ali Zoma put the hosts in front in the 11th minute with a solo strike. 2. Bundesliga's sought-after attacker easily dribbled past Bielefeld's defense after picking up the ball in Nürnberg's half before beating Jonas Kersken.
Tom Janisch doubled their advantage in the midpoint of the half with a superb finish from Finn Becker's cross. Since Zoma scored all the goals in the opening day against Dynamo Dresden, the 21-year-old became only the second player to score at Max-Morlock-Stadion this season.
Before the half-time break, Adam Markhiev, who was sent off in the last friendly against Real Oviedo, became the third player. The midfielder equalled his last season's tally with his long-range effort deflected by Stefano Russo on its way to the net.
Jan Reichert started the season in top form in Nürnberg's goal, and he made a couple of good saves to keep the visitors at bay. Markhiev scored another goal from outside the box after the restart, with no deflection needed this time for his superb attempt.

West Brom boss James Morrison has confirmed the club are close to signing Levante winger Kareem Tunde after their 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle.
Morrison refused to discuss the deal in detail but indicated an announcement could be imminent.

Amid the exuberant atmosphere at Rote Erde Stadium, the Borussia women dominated the match from the start. The team created its first dangerous scoring chance in the fifth minute after a cross to Jacqueline Meißner. Bronico took passes from defender David Schnegg and Liel Abada and scored 29 seconds into the match for his first goal this season and his eighth in 204 career appearances. Schnegg's ******* ists was his fifth and Abada collected his fourth — both career highs.
Abada scored his second goal of the campaign on a penalty kick in the 9th minute for a 2-0 lead. The kick was awarded after he was fouled by Crew midfielder Dylan Chambost.
Eighteen-year-old rookie Chase Adams used his head in the 41st minute to score his first career goal and Columbus trailed 2-1 at halftime. Adams made his first start and fourth appearance. Defender Brooks Lennon picked up his first ******* ist this season and rookie Lautaro Giaccone snagged his first in his first start and second appearance.
Biel scored in the 73rd minute for a 3-1 advantage. It was the 10th goal for the midfielder — matching his career high set last season. Nineteen-year-old rookie forward Rodolfo Aloko earned his first ******* ist in his ninth appearance and rookie defender Will Cleary added his second in his fifth.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) - Rick Renfro couldn't hold in the tears when his son, Jake, committed to Illinois in January of 2026.
Rick Renfro played for the Illini in the 1980s, winning a Big Ten ******* le in '83, and playing in the '84 Rose Bowl.
Now, Jake Renfro joins U of I football for his seventh and final year of college football, transferring in from Wisconsin. Like his father, Jake plays offensive line. He is projected to start at center for Illinois.
"I sat and cried," Rick said regarding his reaction when he found out Jake would play for Illinois.
Rick says then-Illini head coach Lovie Smith recruited Jake, out of Mokena, Ill., a little bit in high school. Then, when Jake entered the transfer portal to depart from Cincinnati, following the 2022 season, Bret Bielema reached out. However, Jake opted to follow head coach Luke Fickell as he made the move from Cincinnati to Madison.

Having successfully navigated their way through the second rounds Mini Tournament, hosted in Biella, the Bianconere will face the Austrians on Wednesday, 26 August, and Wednesday, 2 September.
St. Polten earned their place in the third qualifying round after beating Sporting CP in their Mini Tournament final.
The Austrian side are a familiar opponent in European competition for the Bianconere. The first meeting between the two sides came on 21 August, 2021, again in the qualification rounds. Then, the Bianconere won 4-1 thanks to goals from Barbara Bonansea (two), Cristiana Girelli and Lina Hurtig.
That win was one of many memorable results that season, which ended in the Bianconere reaching the quarter-finals of the competition.

An extra-time brace from Remina Chiba secured a 3-1 win for the Women's First Team against Hammarby in Biella.
The win sees the Bianconere through to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League as the champions of the mini-tournament.
The Swedes got off to a flying start and, after just two minutes, Svea Rehnberg went close, only to be denied by Danielle De Jong. The visitors maintained the upper hand in the opening stages, but as the minutes ticked by, Juventus began to take greater control of possession.
In the 22nd minute, Juventus had their first attempt through Estela Carbonell, whose shot went wide. Six minutes later, however, it was Hammarby who broke the deadlock: Rehnberg was on hand in the box and scored from close range to make it 0–1.
Juventus responded, and in the 33rd minute, Alba Redondo went in search of an equaliser, only to be denied by Bella Andersson. In the 38th minute, Emma Stolen Godo tried her luck with a header. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) - Illinois football will need guys to step up on the defensive line in 2026.
The Illini saw a flood of departures after the 2025 season, via both graduation and the transfer portal. Gabe Jacas, arguably Illinois' best player on defense in 2025, graduated, and was drafted by the New England Patriots. James Thompson and Leon Lowery, both tied for second on the team in sacks on the year, graduated as well. Tomiwa Durojaiye also contributed up front for Illinois, and he transferred to South Carolina.
Illinois lost young talent to the portal in Angelo McCullum and Eli Coenen, too.
Who could make noise in opposing backfields in 2026?
Illini head coach Bret Bielema offered up three potential starters when talking with reporters at Big Ten Football Media Days in late July. He says Joe Barna, Pat Farrell and Darrell Prater are likely to see lots of snaps in 2026.

Aug. 6—CHAMPAIGN — Bret Bielema ran into Melvin Gordon last week in Chicago at Big Ten media days.
The Illinois football coach couldn't help but reminisce about the Wisconsin teams he coached with Gordon a go-to option in the run game. It didn't start out that way, of course.
Gordon might have stacked up award after award in 2014 when he led the nation in rushing with a staggering 2,587 yards, but the eventual Pro Bowl running back and Super Bowl champion started his Wisconsin career fourth on the Badgers' depth chart at running back.
That was the team Bielema thought of first when he crossed paths with Gordon at the Hilton Chicago. The running back room that included Montee Ball, James White and Jeffrey Lewis in addition to Gordon.
"I'm not saying we're quite there, but I do think our running back room is getting close to what we had going some other places," Bielema said about the collection of running backs he has this season in Champaign.

Aug. 6—CHAMPAIGN — Aidan Laughery wouldn't mind if the Illinois running backs group he belongs to started wearing the same helmet cameras the Illini quarterbacks have sported this week in training camp.
Brandon Henderson likes the idea, too, but the Illinois offensive lineman understands it wouldn't be all that feasible for his position group. One play, one clash on the line with his defensive counterpart, and that camera would likely be returned in pieces to director of video Joe Maggio.
"They might be broken before they even start," Henderson said.
"They threw up a clip in the team meeting of the quarterback's view," Laughery added. "I think it's awesome. It gives those guys a chance to watch film and let us see what they're seeing. It ain't so easy."
Mounting a small camera on a quarterback's helmet isn't something Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. cooked up this offseason. It's been done before, including when Lunney was tight ends coach for Bret Bielema at Arkansas.

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has agreed to become Uruguay head coach on an interim basis.
Forlan succeeds Marcelo Bielsa, who stepped down after Uruguay failed to qualify from the group stage at the World Cup.
The 47-year-old is set to be in charge for the national team's friendlies this autumn before a permanent manager is appointed at the end of this year or the start of 2027.
Forlan has also been named coach for Uruguay's Under-20 team, alongside the senior first team.
Ex-Leeds United boss Bielsa became Uruguay boss in May 2023 but they won 15 of his 39 games in charge and, after their disappointing early exit from the World Cup, the 70-year-old Argentine said his tenure "left nothing behind".

CHICAGO (AP) — Robert Lewandowski scored two goals, including the winner, in his home debut for the Fire, helping Chicago beat Charlotte FC 2-1 on Saturday.
Lewandowski, who made the move from FC Barcelona in a two-year deal with Chicago, equalized in the 20th minute off a screamer from outside the box that tied the game at 1.
He connected on his second goal of the night in the 68th minute with a go-ahead shot to the bottom left corner to seal the win for the Fire (9-6-2), who played their first home match in over two months.
