No. 23 Houston built a big lead and held off a late rally to open the 2026 season with a 33-20 win over Oregon State on Saturday at TDECU Stadium.
Quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 305 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown to Amare Thomas on the Cougars' opening possession, and scored a late touchdown as the Cougars won their fifth opener in the last seven years.
Oregon State, a nearly three-touchdown underdog, led 7-6 on a 3-yard Braden Atkinson. The Cougars scored 20 unanswered points on touchdown runs of 51 and 1 yards by Re'Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes, respectively, and 42- and 32-yard field goals by Jonathan Dimas, the first of his career.

After Hughes' touchdown put the Cougars ahead 26-7 with 6 ½ minutes left in the third quarter, Oregon State scored on two straight drives - a 7-yard touchdown catch by Jess Legree and 4-yard run by A.J. Newberry. The last touchdown was set up by Sailasa Vadrawale III near the goal line early in the fourth quarter.

The late Queen wasn't afraid to get stuck in when it came to everyday chores, and was known to pop on the Marigolds to do the washing up during her summer breaks at Balmoral Castle.
But anyone who chose to help out did so at their own risk.
Lady Anne Glenconner worked as Princess Margaret's Lady in Waiting and, as such, was privy to seeing the monarch behind closed doors.
Writing in her book Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown, Lady Anne recalled receiving a stern warning from the Queen's only daughter when she and her husband attempted to help clear up after a summer picnic.
She wrote: "The first time we went on one of these grand picnics, Colin and I started to carry things back to the mobile kitchen, helping to clear up.

The Arizona Cardinals have a jog-through Wednesday and then a regular practice Thursday, which will be the last on-field work until preparation begins on Labor Day for the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.
When this schedule was put in place by the NFL, it was mandated that all players have off from Friday through Sunday.
Head coach Mike LaFleur provided some updates with scant details this week for players that are dealing with injuries.
The veteran running back was placed on injured reserve Sunday with the ability to return later this season. Recovering from a serious ankle injury suffered early in the 2025 season, Conner was not placed on active/physically unable to perform when training camp opened.
He participated in drills, but was not part of 11-on-11 work all summer.

EAST LANSING – To say Pat Fitzgerald has a big personality would be an understatement.
Michigan State's new football coach has some big jokes, too.
Fitzgerald twice took lighthearted jabs at lightning rod LSU coach Lane Kiffin during his debut radio show on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The first came when offensive lineman Conner Moore joined the broadcast with Fitzgerald, host Dalton Shetler and former MSU running back Jehuu Caulcrick. Shetler listed a bunch of superlatives for Moore, a senior who played a team-high 765 snaps last season for the Spartans and was fifth in the Big Ten with an 80.4 run blocking grade after arriving from Montana State.
"Should we keep going with showering with praise?" Shelter asked Fitzgerald.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jackson Koivun was added to the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup on Tuesday just three months after leaving Auburn, one of two newcomers to an American team that hasn't lost in 28 years.
Koivun, who won the 3M Open in his third start as a professional and qualified for the PGA Tour postseason in just five tournaments, is the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2013 to start a year without a tour card and play in the Presidents Cup.
U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker also took Jacob Bridgeman, who won at Riviera this year. Snedeker passed over Ryan Gerard, the No. 22 player in the world who contended at the Tour Championship and finished third.
International captain Geoff Ogilvy picked a pair of Canadians in Corey Conners and Nick Taylor. He also took Ryo Hisatsune. It will be the first time since 1998 the International team has two ***** anese players, with Hideki Matsuyama already earning one of the six automatic spots.
The Presidents Cup is Sept. 24-27 at Medinah, which has been entirely renovated by Ogilvy's Australia-based golf course design company.

Less than 48 hours after six players automatically qualified for the International Team's 2026 Presidents Cup roster, Captain Geoff Ogilvy identified the other half dozen members on Tuesday.
Si Woo Kim, the only player in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking on the 12-man team, headlines the International side at Medinah Country Club later this month.
Of the automatic qualifiers, three are major champions — Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyma and Ryan Fox, with Fox' triumph at Royal Birkdale vaulting him to No. 25 in the OWGR. The other two automatic qualifying bids went to Min Woo Lee and Tom Kim, who round out the world's top 30 players as of Sept. 1.
While Ogilvy's captain's picks bring a combined zero major championships to the table, Sungjae Im, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Corey Conners do carry experience having played at Quail Hollow in 2022 and Royal Montreal in 2024 — both tournaments won by the Americans.
The other three captain's picks are far more green in terms of history on this stage (see: none). Those players are Colombia's Nico Echavarria, ***** an's Ryo Hisatsune and Canada's Nick Taylor.

Just because an NFL player is injured and will be on the shelf -- for a little (or longer) while -- doesn't mean you should completely avoid him in fantasy football.
This is especially true if you have some IR spots that can be filled with a player who is on the actual injured reserve list. Sometimes, the best strategy with a talented player like that is to wait until the later rounds when that player is overlooked and to ***** them with a late pick.
In this case, we're ranking the names who could be noteworthy IR stashes in your draft. Let's run through some of them and rank them based on priority:
Obviously, rookie Jadarian Price is going to handle a lot of work from the get-go, and we may see more George Holani than we think. But Charbonnet is coming back from a torn ACL in the playoffs, and when he does return, it's possible he'll get more work than you think he might. I'd take him late and stash him in the hopes that he's a factor by the middle of the season.
Jeremiyah Love is injured and a rookie. Tyler Allgeier will have a role. And Conner? The veteran with a foot injury will miss at least the first four games. Given some of the uncertainty here, I'd recommend a stash in the hopes that he's a factor in the offense sometime in October or November.

The Arizona Cardinals' roster release may not have had any jaw-dropping surprises, but it was filled with mild curiosities. The organization cut ties with multiple former top draft picks, while opting for seven wide receivers, five safeties and placing James Conner on injured reserve. Plus, there were two trades: Sending running back Corey Kiner to New England and acquiring tight end Hunter Long from Jacksonville.
On Monday, Aug. 31, head coach Mike LaFleur met with reporters to explain those decisions. Here's what we learned.
The Cardinals held the No. 3 priority on the waiver wire but did not claim any players in that process. There are two reasons for that, LaFleur explained.
"1) Do we think he is gonna upgrade the roster?" LaFleur said. "And 2) If it's close, the time on task that you have with the guys currently in the building compared to a guy coming off the street that has to learn our building, have to learn the coach, have to learn the scheme, all those things."
In the end, the Cardinals didn't see any players whose skill set justified engaging in that process.

When the Arizona Cardinals announced their 53-man roster on Sunday, Aug. 30, it laid bare the cracks in this team's foundation. At multiple key spots, the Cardinals are short on both impact starters and reliable depth pieces.
That much, though, was already known. What's new is the 34 players whom the Cardinals cut, along with two minor trades and four injury designations. Each move played a part in carving the group of 53 players that will face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 on Sept. 13 — although waiver claims could tweak the picture this week.
For now, here are five key takeaways from the roster release.
The biggest news of the day came when the Cardinals placed veteran running back James Conner on injured reserve, ruling him out of the first four games. That much, though, has little to do with Jeremiyah Love. Conner didn't participate in 11-on-11 drills for all of camp, and hadn't practiced at all over the past week. His progression has simply taken longer than expected.
The notable part, for Love, is that the Cardinals opted to keep just three running backs in Conner's absence, as they traded away Corey Kiner and released Evan Hull.

The Arizona Cardinals have some roster decisions to make by the end of the week, and the running back room has an important one. What will the Cardinals do with running back James Conner?
He isn't in any real danger of being cut, as he has $2.1 million of his more than $2.3 million in salary guaranteed. He is coming off a severe ankle injury last season, but he has not participated yet in any 11-on-11 work in practices.
Head coach Mike LaFleur has been adamant that the team will trust Conner in communicating when he will be ready to play, as he knows his body best.
"We're going to lean on him and how he feels," LaFleur reiterated on Wednesday in Green Bay. "Again, that was a gruesome injury, but he's he's progressing well and we'll take it one day at a time with him."
However, he did admit that the regular season is "starting to creep up," but that he can't project when Conner will be able to practice.

Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson's time with the team is done. He was unable to get back on the field and play after suffering a knee injury last season in Week 4. The Cardinals waived him on Monday with an injury designation. If he goes unclaimed, he will revert to injured reserve, where he will remain until he receives an injury settlement.
Benson was drafted by the Cardinals in the third round in 2024. He rushed for 291 yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.8 yards per carry as a rookie and caught six passes for 59 yards.
Last season, entering the season as the No. 2 running back behind James Conner, rushed for 160 yards in four games, averaging 7.3 yards per attempt, and he had 13 receptions for 64 yards.
He went on injured reserve with a knee injury, returned to practice but had a setback and reverted to injured reserve to finish the year. This offseason, he finally began practicing during training camp, had a couple of good practices and then had his knee flare up. He hadn't practiced since.
It is a disappointing end to his Cardinals career.

On Monday, Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan continued to churn the bottom of the team's roster — signing tight end Ethan Conner and inside linebacker Jaheim Thomas while waiving center Jim Bonifas and cornerback Ahmari Harvey.
The moves come after Dolphins rookie linebacker Trey Moore suffered a non-disclosed injury during Saturday's preseason contest against the New York Giants that will keep the defender on the shelf for some time.
Miami's website had this to say about Thomas:
"Thomas appeared in 10 games with the Louisville Kings of the United Football League during the 2026 UFL season, recording 64 tackles (42 solo), 0.5 sack, 1.0 tackle for loss and two passes defensed. Thomas finished his collegiate career at Wisconsin (2024) after spending time at Arkansas (2023) and Cincinnati (2020-22). While everyone loves a reboot, there's one character John Goodman hopes to never return to.
Ahead of the 2018 premiere of the Roseanne spinoff The Conners, the actor acknowledged that, yes, he had shed half of the weight from his formerly 400-pound frame, but he saw no point in talking it up.
"It was basically just portion control, and 'I don't need it,'" The Righteous Gemstones star explained to AARP The Magazine in 2018 of cutting down on his food consumption. "I was just shoving everything into my mouth. But I don't want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on—when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner's sugar."
Of course, nearly a decade later, he still remains righteous, most recently showing off his decidedly slimmer frame on social media.

The Arizona Cardinals have two preseason games remaining and less than two weeks to make final roster decisions. At many positions, certain jobs are set. Others have intriguing battles for the back end of the depth chart.
At running back, three spots seem secure — rookie Jeremiyah Love, free agent Tyler Allgeier and veteran James Conner.
Assuming the Cardinals keep a fourth running back, that competition is intriguing. Three guys are battling for one spot.
Edward Hull and newly signed Tre Stewart are probably not likely to be in the mix, so we simply acknowledge them.
The three battling for one spot are Trey Benson, Bam Knight and Corey Kiner.

Jeremiyah Love carried a hefty workload at running back during his NFL debut in the preseason opener for the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. Now, it appears both he and the franchise may come to regret that.
Love, who was the third overall draft pick this past offseason, joined a talented running back room for the Cardinals, so it makes sense that the team would want to see him tossed into game reps to see how he will compete. And in the preseason opener against the Raiders, he saw 11 carries for 58 yards and three receptions for 14 yards.
But he ended up suffering an injury in that game, which reports now indicate is a high-ankle sprain that makes a preseason return "unlikely," according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. The franchise is also "hoping" he can return for the regular-season opener on September 13.
After missing the Hall of Fame game the week prior, Love was one of the bright spots for Arizona against Las Vegas – making multiple standout plays and contributing on three separate scoring drives. The performance suggests that he'll step up and play a major role for the Cardinals this season.
But now, he'll need to spend the preseason resting up to make sure that happens, which should open some **** e for returning veteran James Conner and free-agent acquisition Tyler Allegier to get extra reps over the final two preseason outings. The franchise also signed second-year free agent Tre Stewart on Saturday after the severity of the injury became apparent.

Special Olympics athlete Anthony Conner took home a gold medal, but it's his heart of gold that shined the brightest at the USA Games.
The 35-year-old from Cape May Court House is a two-decade veteran of Special Olympics. But this year was his first opportunity to compete on Team New Jersey in the USA Games.
After a lengthy try-out process, Conner was selected as one of four athletes on the track team, which was led by Jackie Adams.
At the event in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Conner was awarded a gold medal in the 1500 meter race.
During the race, a competitor had fallen down prior to crossing the finish line.

Texas A&M's 2025 quarterback room included former four-star QB Miles O'Neill, who, during his impressive high school career, potentially looked like the next starting signal caller after Marcel Reed eventually departs, but after two seasons with the program, throwing for a combined 171 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, the Massachusetts native entered the transfer portal, eventually choosing North Carolina.
Standing 6'5" and 220 pounds, O'Neill's arm strength was never an issue, but compared to likely backup Brady Hart, his fit in new OC Holmon Wiggins' offense wasn't compatible; that doesn't take away from the fact that, with the right scheme, reaching his full potential is still in reach.
Under Hall of Fame coach Bill Belichick and OC and former Texas A&M and Arkansas OC Bobby Petrino, it was reported by TarHeel247 that O'Neill is in good position to be named the starter soon, as fellow transfer quarterback Billy Edwards is still recovering from his season-ending injury, while O'Neill is also competing with Au'Tori Newkirk and Travis Burgess, who are equally inexperienced.
Former Texas A&M QB Max Johnson played for North Carolina from 2024-2025 and served as the starter for the Tar Heels before suffering a broken femur, which ended his season after the first game, and will be his final collegiate season with Georgia Southern.
The running joke that Texas A&M has become "QB U" given all the former signal callers who have started elsewhere after transferring has some accuracy attached to it, especially given that former coach Jimbo Fisher failed to develop nearly every starting quarterback, especially Conner Weigman and Haynes King.

For the fourth consecutive summer, the Arizona Cardinals have lost a drafted offensive lineman to a knee injury, with two for the entire season.
The latest is this year's second-round choice, guard Chase Bisontis, who suffered a torn MCL in Thursday's preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He was placed on injured reserve Saturday and won't play this season.
Last year, sixth-round center-guard Hayden Conner was injured in the team's second preseason game and was placed on IR Aug. 26. He was activated on Nov. 29 and played five games.
In 2024, it was tackle Christian Jones, selected in the fifth round. He injured his knee in the preseason finale, spent the first chunk of the season on injured reserve and appeared in two games.
In 2023, fourth-round center/guard Jon Gaines II suffered a knee injury in the final preseason game and missed the entire season after going on IR Aug. 29.

With the season-ending knee injury to rookie offensive lineman Chase Bisontis, one position battle ended — the starting battle at right guard between him and incumbent Isaiah Adams. However, with his injury, a new position battle now opens up.
Who will make the roster as the primary backup guard?
Who are the candidates?
Hayden Conner
Matt Pryor

The Cardinals didn't draft running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick so he could sit on the bench, but they're not going to declare him the starter just yet.
Currently, the Cardinals' depth chart lists Tyler Allgeier as the first-string running back. Love is second string.
Realistically, there's almost no chance that Love, barring injury, isn't the Cardinals' top running back for the regular season. But NFL teams often wait until a rookie has earned a starting job before listing him as the starter on the team's published depth chart.
No. 3 on the running back depth chart in Arizona is James Conner, followed by Trey Benson, Bam Knight and Corey Kiner.

It's fantasy football draft season.
What a glorious sentence. Training camps are underway in earnest, preseason kicks off this week and the season will be here before you can spell "Kyle Juszczyk" (which takes me about 25 business days on average). Whether you've been following the beats all summer or are just now tuning back in, one of your best tools for taking the temperature of the fantasy football community is Average Draft Position, or ADP.
Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season
But that ADP is subject to change — quite a lot — over the next month. So, as we hit the heart of mock drafts (and eventually real drafts) and these ADPs continue to shift, here are 10 players whose draft cost I'm watching closely.
The closer we get to September, the more ADP shifts away from the brainchild of degenerates and diehards — like me — and closer to the consensus of the average fantasy player. Oftentimes, that comes with a notable shift in perception on rookies. Running back Jeremiyah Love was drafted third overall out of Notre Dame and is the top rookie in fantasy ADP — a potentially game-changing talent. But the Cardinals entered training camp with a lot of question marks on offense and have raised even more with recent comments about James Conner and Tyler Allgeier. Historically speaking, Love's draft capital suggests he will be a workhorse, but a long look at Arizona's roster raises some red flags about efficiency and scoring chances. The breakdown of snaps and touches will likely remain something of a mystery until Week 1 (or beyond), so fantasy drafters will have to work off conjecture for now.

Trey Benson is back in the Arizona Cardinals' injury room with a "flare-up" to his surgically repaired left knee, according to head coach Mike LaFleur.
The issue does not sound particularly serious, with LaFleur saying he does not expect Benson's absence to stretch across multiple weeks. It seems likely, though, that Benson will miss the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, Aug. 6.
"I wouldn't say (I'd be) shocked if he goes in Canton, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't go," LaFleur said.
Even if Benson misses minimal time, it's a frustrating setback for a player who has been unable to stay healthy. He tore his meniscus last September, attempted a return in November and was shut down for the season when the injury did not respond well to an increased workload.
In part because Benson missed so much time, the Cardinals addressed their running back room aggressively this offseason, rather than relying on the 2024 third-round pick. They reworked James Conner's contract to avoid cutting him, signed Tyler Allgeier in free agency and, of course, drafted Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick.

For obvious reasons, the Arizona Cardinals running backs room has garnered a significant amount of interest and discussion in the first two weeks of training camp.
It's to be expected.
After a brutal 2025 season in which James Conner and Trey Benson managed to play only a combined seven games, Michael Carter finished the year as the team's leading rusher with a total of 333 yards, followed by Emari Demercado with 312 and Bam Knight with 269.
Carter and Demercado moved on to other team, while Conner (with a pay cut), Benson and Knight returned. Tyler Allgeier was signed as an unrestricted free agent in March and six weeks later Jeremiyah Love was selected with the third overall pick in the draft.
Allgeier revealed earlier this week that head coach Mike LaFleur told him about the team's plans in advance and LaFleur said Friday he also spoke with Conner.

The Arizona Cardinals reported for training camp on Wednesday and had their first practice on Thursday, although it was not open to fans. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett got his first reps in the new offense, running back James Conner and Trey Benson, both of whom did not get work in the offseason program, participated in drills, and quarterback Gardner Minshew was with the first-team offense.
There was limited access, but there were some photos and videos of the first practice.
Below are some of what was shared on social media.
This was a video from SI.com's Donnie Druin.
Here are other photos and videos from reporters who were at practice at State Farm Stadium.

Rosie O'Donnell is reflecting on her longstanding feud with President Donald Trump more than a year and a half after she left the U.S. for Ireland.
In a new interview with People on Wednesday, the TV personality said that Trump hasn't "shut up about her for 20 years."
Politics: Spain World Cup Hero Ignites Political Furor With MAGA-Style Hat
"It used to be when our president would say things about me, it would be like, whoa," she said. "First of all, if you had written this as a movie, a stand-up comic makes fun of a reality show host who is a bloviating idiot and he ends up being the president, and then he doesn't shut up about her for 20 years, it would be unbelievable — and the fact that it's my life is very trippy."
Trump has gone on offensive tirades about O'Donnell since 2006, including during the first Republican primary debate in 2015, where he called her a "fat pig" and a "slob" on national television. She had slammed Trump on a 2006 episode of "The View" over his decision to let Tara Conner keep her Miss USA ***** le following scandals involving drug use and underage drinking.
