Props to Bayshore High's baseball program, which starts the new school year on a meaningful note. For the first time in school history, the Bruins were recipients of the American Baseball Coaches ******* ociation Team Academic Excellence Award for 2025-26 with a 3.62 GPA.
They were one of 10 state high school ballclubs honored.
"Can't give enough credit to every guy's willingness to be disciplined in the classroom all year. This goes way beyond baseball," said Head Coach Mike Rupp, who also credited ******* istants Scott Hutsko, Jerad Paparella and Armando Sierra.
The 2025-26 Bruins were seniors Gabriel Falcon, Jordan Greene, Angelo Magloire, Bryant Ortiz, Tucker Pope, Fabio Rondon and Carsen Smalley; juniors Diego Falcon, Israel Garcia, Daniel Hutsko and Jashun Judge; sophomore Diego Orozco; and freshmen Herminio Nieves, Sergio Oropesa Marchena, Ismael Rosario and Patrick Schaefer.

According to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey, Boston tried to do both with one partner, as they proposed a deal to the Cincinnati Reds for All-Stars Elly De La Cruz and Hunter Greene.

For the Pirates, Friday night's game at Great American Ballpark was a nightmare.
Starter Paul Skenes struggled, the bullpen blew its 20th save, a costly miscue in the eighth gave the Reds the lead, and Ryan O'Hearn had to be carried off the field in the ninth inning of an 8-7 loss to the Reds. Their losing streak is now at four games.
Top 1st, 2-0 PIT: The Pirates (55-56) took advantage of a couple defensive miscues and scored a pair of runs on a Nick Gonzales two-out single up the middle off Hunter Greene with the bases loaded.
Bottom 1st, 2-2: Paul Skenes labored through a 36-pitch inning and the Reds (52-57) quickly struck back to tie the game. Tyler Stephenson ripped an RBI double down the left field line and Nathaniel Lowe plated a run with a base hit to right.

Greene's hometown Los Angeles Dodgers have been mentioned most frequently in the Greene-stakes, largely because of their need for frontline starting pitching with Shohei Ohtani sidelined from pitching, along with their strong farm system and their ability to handle without flinching what's left on a team-friendly contract ($15 million next year, $16 million in 2028 and a $21 million club option in 2029).
But several teams have been asking about Greene – even before the Reds decided to make him available, ****** uming they get a high enough return for their most valuable chip as they try to retool for a possible playoff run next year.

Given his electric stuff and front-of-the-rotation potential, it wasn't surprising that contending teams reportedly reached out to the Reds to gauge his availability.
However, it now appears that one of the deadline's biggest rumored blockbusters is unlikely to happen. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal has cast significant doubt on the possibility of Greene being dealt, suggesting Cincinnati has little interest in moving its ace despite the growing number of inquiries from around the league.

For weeks, rumors suggested the Reds could consider moving Greene if presented with the right offer. Those reports fueled speculation that several contenders were preparing blockbuster packages in hopes of landing one of baseball's premier young pitchers.

The last place Cincinnati Reds are limping towards the August 3rd trade deadline at just 51-57, still buried in the busy National League Wild Card standings 5.5 games back of the final spot. That comes with the caveat that there are six NL clubs they'd have to jump to earn their way into that spot – the Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, and St. Louis Cardinals.
At quick glance, at least three of those clubs are likely going to be buyers at the deadline. So, the Reds are between a rock and a hard place, and anything other than a miracle win streak this weekend will likely send them into at least some mode of selling.
Per Bob Nightengale of the USA Today, that won't include moving Hunter Greene. Cincinnati's ace had seen his name pop up in trade rumors pretty much ever since Chase Burns signed his $105 million extension as the rest of the baseball world began to wonder how the typically frugal Reds would accommodate both on the payroll long-term.
That said, they've long been rumored to be shopping their litany of players who are destined to reach free agency at season's end, and that includes catcher Tyler Stephenson. He's been red-hot of late, too, slashing .339/.400/.523 dating back to June 4th, and that's caught the eye of the catching-needy New York Yankees, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.

The Los Angeles Lakers had one of the NBA's busiest offseasons, losing 22-time All-Star forward LeBron James at the outset of free agency before replacing him with a hodgepodge of players they felt could complement superstar guard Luka Dončić.
While LA has exhausted most of its resources to appease Dončić, including making an all-in push for a high-level starting center, franchise icon Shaquille O'Neal doesn't see a viable path to the 2027 NBA championship.
Despite its strong 53-win finish to the 2025-26 season, LA's ******* le contention hopes were thwarted by Dončić's absence (hamstring) throughout the 2026 playoffs. The shorthanded squad was forced to put an excessive workload on 41-year-old James en route to a second-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Lakers' inability to match up defensively against OKC and lack of complementary scoring options contributed to James seeking greener pastures in free agency. The four-time MVP announced his exit in late June, eventually opting to join the star-studded Philadelphia 76ers out East.
Looking to pick up the pieces, LA had significant money to work with this summer, with James' expiring $52.6 million contract coming off the books. Rob Pelinka and Co.'s biggest move came when they parted with unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 and first-round swaps in 2028 and 2030 to land restricted free agent big man Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz on a four-year, $130 million contract.

With just three games left before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline, the latest Cincinnati Reds trade-chip watch also comes with an eye on 2027.
That's because team president Nick Krall made it clear during the recent road trip that the Reds with newly-extended ace Chase Burns have designs on retooling for next season rather than rebuild again for some undetermined future window.
"You've got to make the best deal you can," Krall said. "With that said, your goal is to come back next year and be in a good spot to make a playoff run."
That's where Burns and rookie Rhett Lowder come in – even where All-Star Hunter Greene might go out.
Lowder, the No. 7 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 2023 the year before Burns was the Reds' No. 2 overall pick out of the same school, pitched six innings for the first time since April and allowed just two runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the July 30 opener of a four-game series won 3-2 by the Reds in the ninth.

One photograph showed Herbert on one knee beneath an arbor decorated with greenery and white flowers. Beer crouched in front of him as he held an open ring box, capturing the moment before she accepted his proposal.

When Florida State was preparing for the 2025 season, defensive tackle Kevin Wynn was looked at as one of the top incoming freshmen and a player who could have an immediate impact. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned for the former four-star prospect.
Wynn suffered an injury late in fall camp that held him out of FSU's win against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the season opener. He ended up playing in just four games last season and recorded one tackle. Now, Wynn is healthy, and he's also about 30 pounds lighter at 317.
According to defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, Wynn has made the most of his opportunities during the summer. He feels that Wynn has taken more strides than anyone.
"Juju, I think, had the biggest jump this summer. He's lost 40 pounds," Knighton said via Warchant. "He's moving well, which is helping his body with the day-to-day. Now, he's able to, like I said, focus on football. He's in great shape, and he's ready to show he can be an every-down player."
Wynn was an absolute force during his high school days at Greene County High School in Greensboro, Georgia. He racked up 84 tackles for loss and 14 sacks (seven as a senior). He displayed an incredible burst and great power, which is why he lived behind the line of scrimmage and became a top 100 recruit.

In the 1980s, Coca-Cola infamously introduced a reformulated version of their signature soda that ended up going by the name New **** e. It didn’t go over very well: sales slumped, chastened executives were forced to reintroduce the classic **** e, and conspiracy theories about the revamped recipe being a scheme to juice sales of the rescued original recipe spread. Tonight, Aaron Nola pitched in front of a Coca-Cola logo drawn into the mound dirt. Like that vaunted soft drink, Nola has two recipes: Nola Classic, a highly effective, if not quite ace-level, pitcher, and New Nola, the struggling hurler whose long-ball nemesis often gets the better of him. Will Coca-Nola Classic ever make a permanent return to the beverage aisle? We hope so. But tonight, we got the not-so-sweet taste of New Nola, as the Dodgers took the series.
Nola got the night started off right with a one-pitch out of Shohei Ohtani. Alec Bohm got it started off even more right with a two-run shot to left in the bottom first. In the second, Nola struck out Max Muncy on a classic knuckle curve, then put out the next two Angelenos down on fly **** . It was smooth sailing at first for the Louisianan hurler. And it continued that way through the first two outs of the third. Then, unfortunately, came the familiar refrain, the song of the summer that you wish the radio would stop playing: a homer, this one courtesy of Dalton Rushing, to narrow the lead to one.
He encountered more trouble in the fourth. Freddie Freeman doubled, then did the little dance, both arms up and waving buoyantly, that the Dodgers apparently do after hits. It is said that this dance actually traces its origins back to the Brooklyn days, when the early Dodgers used it to hone the reflexes that were necessary for the dodging of trolleys; it is still extant despite the loss of its purpose, rather like the appendix. Max Muncy singled to put two runners on, but Nola was able to wrap the inning up without further damage.
The same could not be said of the fifth. Nola allowed singles to Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman, then a two-bagger to Rushing to score two and give the visitors the lead. Ohtani was given an intentional walk. The move paid off, as Ohtani became part of a twin killing that ended the frame. But the damage was done, and the lead was lost.
Not for long. Bryan De La Cruz sent a fastball flying towards the greenery of the batter’s eye as the first batter in the Phillie fifth. Andy Pages stretched out his arm, and for a moment it looked as if he’d come down with it. Like a bank robber foiled by the dye packs in a sack of cash, his would-be burglary was foiled at the last second, with the ball glancing off his leather and landing safely over the fence to tie the game. Bryson Stott doubled, but was put out on a baserunning blunder; dredging up some bad memories from the not-so-distant past.

In his MLB trade deadline predictions, USA Today's Bob Nightengale ***** sed whether he expects 12 players on the bubble to stay or go.
Nightengale's prediction for Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene is that he's staying in Cincinnati.
"It's crazy to think that the Reds would trade Greene, right?" Nightengale wrote. "He's one of the most talented young pitchers in the game, but injuries have limited him. He also is under team control through the 2029 season at $52 million.
"With so few sellers on the market, and Greene not turning 27 until three days after the trade deadline, the Reds are intrigued just to see what they could command on the market, seeing if someone blows them away."

There are a lot of Detroit Tigers’ storylines playing out during All-Star Week. From Justin Verlander’s honorary selection as a Legends pick and final appearance at the MidSummer Classic as an active player, to Kevin McGonigle’s first All-Star game and triumphant return home to Philadelphia, where the Delaware County native grew up going to Citizens Bank Park to see childhood favorites like Chase Utley and Bryce Harper, to Dillon Dingler’s first All-Star Game and emergence this season as the best all round catcher in baseball, there is a lot to celebrate.In terms of the game itself, Riley Greene, making his third All-Star Game appearance, has been added to tonight’s starting lineup.
We thought we’d just put together a little round-up of clips from the Tigers’ All-Stars during media day. It’s been pretty fun watching the 43-year-old Verlander take it all in for the last time as he prepares to ride off into the sunset. The contrast between the legendary Tigers and Astros ace’s perspective, and that of the 21-year-old McGonigle’s first experience as a star player in the game, has been particularly fun to observe. Jokes have abounded regarding Verlander taking his three adult sons to the All-Star Game, as you’d expect. There have also been quite a few clips with Verlander reminiscing on his first All-Star Game back in 2007 and how the league and the game has changed.
Watching him chat with former foes like Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, and Alex Rodriguez, all now long retired, as he prepares to join them in the next phase of a ballplayer’s life has certainly provided some nostalgic moments as well.

PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Schwarber of the host Philadelphia Phillies will lead off for the National League in the All-Star Game as the replacement for designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who is skipping the showcase to have a knee procedure ahead of the season’s second half.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene and two New York Yankees, first baseman Ben Rice and outfielder Cody Bellinger, gained American League starting spots because of injuries.
Rice, third in the major leagues with 29 home runs behind Schwarber (32) and the Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez (31), starts at first because Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is skipping the game to rest a bad back. Guerrero’s initial replacement, the Athletics’ Nick Kurtz, sprained his thumb.
Bellinger replaced Yankees teammate Aaron Judge, who hasn’t played since May 31 because of a fractured rib. Greene took over from Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, sidelined by a hip injury. Bellinger will be in right and Greene in left.
Philadelphia left-hander Cristopher Sánchez and Toronto right-hander Dylan Cease were announced as the starting pitchers.

MLB announced the starting lineups for tomorrow night's All-Star Game, and as planned two Yankees will feature. Cody Bellinger starts in right and bats sixth, while Ben Rice starts at first and bats seventh:
The pair of Bombers come after a star-studded top five in the AL lineup, starting with Mike Trout in center, Yordan Alvarez at DH, Shea Langliers at catcher, Junior Caminero at third, and Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop. Riley Greene in left and Ernie Clement at second round out the lineup. Rice is somewhat hard-done-by with his slot in the lineup, his 166 wRC+ second in the AL behind only Alvarez, and Langliers is a curious choice from manager John Schneider (to bat third, the catcher having a great season but lacking the offensive skillset and pedigree of most of the other starters.
Otherwise, the lineup seems fair enough on paper, and it's very cool to see Trout, the once-and-forever legend who's been derailed by injuries, slot in at the top, in the midst of a resurgent (and yet still injury-ridden) campaign. He and Alvarez form an awesome one-two, and though I would personally have slotted Rice right in there at the three spot, it's hard to argue with Caminero and Witt's positions, the pair each among the game's brightest young stars.

This is Greene's third straight All-Star selection and second straight as a starter, though he was not initially named as a starter via the fan vote. He and New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger will replace reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge and Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton as starters.
Greene, 25, is having arguably his best year in the majors in 2026, with career highs in on-base percentage (.380) and OPS (.842) over 400 plate appearances. The 2025 Silver Slugger Award winner has seen his power numbers dip with just 13 home runs over 95 games in 2026, but he has also significantly cut down on his strikeouts and has increased his walk rate to a career-high 12.8% (league average is 9%).
Greene is one of four Tigers players to be named AL All Stars in 2026, joining shortstop Kevin McGonigle, catcher Dillon Dingler and "Legends Pick" Justin Verlander. Greene is the only Tiger to be named a starter, however.

The week of July 5-11 saw postseason play go into full swing for high school baseball teams from the Ames area.
Roland-Story, the No. 2 team in Class 2A, pounded Greene County (8-0) and Ogden (20-4) to claim the 2A District 4 championship and advance onto the substate finals. Gilbert crushed Webster City (10-0) and Ballard demolished Perry (11-1) in 3A substate quarterfinal competition.
Ames ended its season with a 6-4 loss to Mason City in the 4A Substate 2 quarterfinals on July 10 at Mason City. Nevada fell to Waverly-Shell Rock, 5-2, in the 3A Substate 2 quarterfinals.
In 1A District 4 competition, both Collins-Maxwell and Colo-NESCO came up short on July 6. Collins-Maxwell suffered a 5-2 loss to Madrid at Alleman and Colo-NESCO was dealt a 10-0 loss by AGWSR at Fort Dodge.
There were several outstanding individual performances from area baseball players during district and substate competition.

As Washington continues to build up its offensive line for the rigors of the Big Ten, Yarborough would have been viewed as a promising building block alongside Freshman All-American John Mills, former five-star Kodi Greene, and former four-star Champ Taulealea, who should make up the core of Switzer's unit in 2027.

The Cincinnati Reds are not in the best of shape to make a postseason run this season, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise if they were trade deadline sellers.
While players like Elly De La Cruz, Chase Burns, and Hunter Greene won't be on the move, the Reds could look to move some of their impending free agents. One such player is a $15 million slugger who likely could be had for cheap.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report highlighted Eugenio Suarez, the Reds' $15 million free-agent signing, as a player teams could "buy low" on this summer thanks to a simple 49 home-run reason.
"Things haven't gone according to plan, as a left oblique strain cost Suarez a month and the Reds find themselves in last place in the NL Central..." Kelly writes. "... Sure, he's only hit nine home runs this season, but he clubbed 49 a year ago between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Mariners."

CINCINNATI (AP) — Hunter Greene struck out 12 and allowed three hits in seven dominant innings, Elly De La Cruz and JJ Bleday homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Friday night.
Greene (1-1) missed the first three months of the season after undergoing surgery on March 11 to remove bone chips from his right elbow. The right-hander struggled in his debut on July 4 against Baltimore, going 3 1/3 innings and tying a career high with eight earned runs allowed.
The 26-year-old Greene bounced back with one of the best outings of his five-year career, throwing 68 strikes on 93 pitches. The 12 strikeouts tied for the second-most of his career and he threw 19 first-pitch strikes to the 25 batters he faced.
Greene allowed just four baserunners, with only two reaching second base. Chicago had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but Nico ***** ner lined out to center and Michael Conforto struck out.
Emilio Pagán finished for his eighth save in 11 opportunities.

Aaron Nola was serviceable again but Tim Mayza had one of the worst innings of his nine-year big league career as the Philadelphia Phillies (52-43) unraveled late in a 10-2 drubbing at the hands of the Detroit Tigers (44-50).
Derek Hill led off the third inning with his seventh home run of the year for the game's first run against Tigers' starter, Jack Flaherty.
Delco legend and Rookie of the Year hopeful, Kevin McGonigle, got the Tigers on the board and gave them the lead with a two-run homer off Nola in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1.
An Alec Bohm hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks issued to Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott loaded the bases for Hill, who singled home Harper to bring the score level.
Nola left after five innings and 84 pitches, striking out eight and gave way to Mayza for the sixth. Riley Greene and Matt Vierling walked to set the table for Eduardo Valencia who singled home Greene to retake the lead. Next Zach McKinstry dragged a bunt on the first base side that Mayza hesitated on, eventually throwing to first too late to get McKinstry and allowing Vierling to score from third. One pitch later, James Outman tripled to the gap in right-center to score both runners and extend the lead to four. Three pitches after that, Mayza balked home Outman to complete the damage. The five runs allowed tied Mayza's career high, which he previously surrendered to the Yankees on June 28, 2024 without recording an out.

Talk about opening a series in style as the Tigers beat the Phillies 10-2 to open the last weekend series of the first half.
For the last weekend series before the All-Star Break, the Tigers were squaring off against the club that would be hosting the All-Star Game in the Phillies. They were hoping to ride the high of their series sweep against the A's and keep it up right into the break. To get there, they'd have Jack Flaherty on the mound up against Aaron Nola for the Phillies. Now to see if the Tigers' luck versus .500+ teams would be tested as the Phillies have the second-best record in the NL East.
Kyle Schwarber got a one-out single in the top of the first, but Flaherty quickly brought things around to get the final two outs of the inning. In the home half, Riley Greene got a two-out walk, but the Tigers left him stranded.
In the second, the Phillies went 1-2-3, and the Tigers did the same in the home half. Early to tell, yet, but looks like it could be a set-up for a pitchers' duel.
The Phillies drew first blood in the top of the third with a solo home run from Derek Hill. The next three batters went down in order. In the home half, Jake Rogers took a one-out walk. Then Kevin McGonigle homered, pushing the Tigers nicely into the lead.

With a name like Yoeilin Cespedes, you're supposed to hit for some power.
That's what it feels like when considering the future of this Boston Red Sox infield prospect, at least, because his name sounds a lot like long-time slugger Yoenis Cespedes.
So far this season at High-A Greeneville, Yoeilin is finally growing into his power.
He has 20 doubles, a triple and 15 home runs through 69 games. That gives him a .498 slugging percentage and an .819 OPS.

Following in the footsteps of a program legend is no easy task, but in three-star offensive tackle Tye Kennedy's case, continuing the legacy of his father, former Washington Huskies star offensive lineman Lincoln Kennedy, he's more than prepared for what's next.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pound product of Mountain View High School in Arizona, who is ranked as the nation's No. 634 overall prospect and No. 59 offensive tackle by the 247Sports Composite, committed to his father's alma mater on July 1, choosing the Huskies over Arizona State, Michigan, and Utah, giving offensive line coach Michael Switzer some promising depth at tackle.
After growing up as a Husky fan thanks to his father, Kennedy stated that the plan Switzer and Jedd Fisch have to develop him behind presumed 2027 tackles Kodi Greene and John Mills.
"I feel like they have a great plan for me," Kennedy told Rivals following his pledge. "They're building something really special, and I just see myself being a part of it. They have a really great program...my future teammates are really great people, and I just love everything about it."
On film, the younger Kennedy, who missed the majority of his junior season with an injury, is an impressive athlete who clearly understands some of the finer points of playing the position thanks to his background. While he may need some time to continue developing physically and adding weight to his frame, Kennedy has all the tools necessary to carry on his father's legacy on Montlake.
