The Texas Tech football team knew it would have one new starting safety this season. The Red Raiders actually are beginning the season with two.
Peyton Morgan went through pre-game warmups with the first team at free safety and Malik Esquerra at boundary safety before Tech's season opener against Abilene Christian at Galaxy Stadium. Those two and Oliver Miles III had been competing for one open safety job throughout the off-season.

Tech announced before the game that returning starter Brenden Jordan will miss the first two games for reasons not related to injury. Jordan ended last season with a streak of 15 consecutive starts.
