Become a CEO after your MBA: that's the promise some private equity firms are using to recruit top operating talent.
This promise propels the best and brightest into top executive roles without requiring them to climb the corporate ladder, underpinned by the belief that cultivating talent is a better bet than making semi-blind bets on external hires.
Alpine Investors and Shore Capital Partners have each built separate pipelines to funnel operational talent, aiming to equip executives to take charge of their portfolio companies.
Lower-middle-market buyout firm Shore Capital Partners runs what it calls its CXO program, a two-year training scheme that places early- to mid-career talent and recent MBA grads into C-suite-adjacent roles at its portfolio companies—typically chief of staff or vice president of business operations or strategic initiatives.
Top-performing CXO graduates then have the chance to be promoted to C-level positions. So far, Shore has produced four CEOs from the CXO program. This includes Mark Larsen, who has been CEO of medical software business Connexure since 2024.

In late 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, and within months the bottom rung of the tech-industry career ladder started to disappear. Graduates who majored in computer science and other AI-exposed fields are increasingly missing out on the jobs they trained for, and a chunk of them are landing behind restaurant counters and retail registers instead, according to two Census Bureau papers.
An April 2026 Census paper tracked matched employer-employee records and found that hiring of workers ages 22 to 24 fell sharply in the industries most exposed to AI, while hiring in less-exposed industries held steady. Employment for early-career workers in the most AI-exposed fifth of industries dropped 12% over the ten quarters after ChatGPT's release. Lee Tucker, one of the coauthors of the paper, said "the decline in hires is the primary cause" of that rate of unemployment, not people losing jobs they already had.
That mattered most for one type of graduate. The most AI-exposed industries, Tucker found, cluster heavily around software and information-technology work, which are the very fields computer science and other highly AI-exposed majors are built to feed into.
A second paper from last week, also coauthored by Tucker, follows the graduates of the most AI-exposed decile of college majors. Their odds of holding a job one quarter after graduation fell by five percentage points, and full-quarter initial earnings dropped 13% following ChatGPT's release. A 13% earnings decline is roughly the size economists would expect from graduating into a severe recession—except there wasn't one, since the rest of the labor market held up fine.
Young grads still need to work and still have jobs, even if they've received highly exposed degrees. So the decline in earnings is less about a lack of employment and more about pursuing lower-wage occupations to make ends meet.

Companies in the private sector added 38,000 jobs in August, payroll processing firm ADP said in its latest report on Wednesday.
The figure is below economists' estimates of a gain of 48,000 jobs and down from the prior month's revised 46,000 payrolls. August's figure is the lowest since January.
"Pay can tell us a lot about today's choppy hiring," said Nela Richardson, ADP's chief economist. "To understand hiring patterns, you have to look deeply into where pay growth is accelerating, where it's slowing, and for whom. Once-predictable wage growth has been overtaken by the complexities of demographic change, persistent inflation, and AI's effects on jobs."

A Harvard working paper tracking 62 million workers across 285,000 U.S. firms found that companies adopting generative AI reduced junior employment by about 9% within six quarters.
This is based on the updated May 2026 version of the paper, while senior employment held steady. Seyed Mahdi Hosseini Maasoum and Guy Lichtinger, the paper's authors, describe the pattern as "seniority-biased technological change."
Morgan Housel, bestselling author of The Psychology of Money, raised this concern on The Tetr Podcast, telling host Pratham Mittal he would "move mountains" to send his children to a good college.

Michael Thorbjornsen didn't want to be left behind.
The 24-year-old has been a PGA Tour pro for more than two years, but last month he had one of the biggest eye-opening moments of his career. Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old phenom, won in his third professional start, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to take the trophy at the 3M Open. For a majority of the PGA Tour, it was a reminder that the young kids are good, and they're coming for the top.
For Thorbjornsen, it was a wake-up call.
"Comparison is a thief of joy, but it has helped me and hurt me at times when I see other people having success and doing well when I know I can compete with them," Thorbjornsen said. "When Koivun won, that was a big motivating factor."

Several years ago, the SMU Mustangs were the scrappy underdogs, foregoing nine years of ACC media rights revenue just for a chance to compete in the conference. Now, the Mustangs are an established power in the league.
In its ACC debut in 2024, SMU seamlessly handled the competition. The youngster still has several years of growth and development ahead of him, but if everything turns out well, he can become a top-level forward in Europe, and maybe return to Real Madrid one day.

Aug. 11—Between Marc Anderson and Zach Bruce, there's hardly a job in the Eastern Washington football program that at least one of them hasn't done.
There's even one — recruiting coordinator — that both have held. It wasn't Bruce's favorite.
"All the things that go into signing a football class," Bruce said. "That job, being the recruiting coordinator, is one of the hardest jobs in the building."
Bruce has been on staff at Eastern since 2020, and he played safety for the Eagles from 2012 to 2016. Anderson, with the program since 2014, has been on staff longer than anyone besides head coach Aaron Best, who first came to Cheney as a player in 1996, an entire lifetime ago for strength and conditioning coach and fellow EWU graduate Mike Perez.
They're not alone, either. Across the 20-person coaching and support staff for the Eastern Washington football team, 10 of them are EWU graduates.

The University of Utah men's basketball team appears to be a benefactor from the recent temporary court injunction that permits 2022 high school graduates a fifth year of collegiate eligibility.
On Tuesday, On3's Pete Nakos reported that former Northern Iowa guard Trey Campbell has signed with Utah.
Last month, U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Denver ruled that athletes from the high school graduating class of 2022 who recently exhausted their NCAA eligibility are now eligible to compete in college for an additional season, as the Deseret News previously reported.
On Monday, Nakos reported that the NCAA's emergency motion for an administrative stay on that preliminary class-wide injunction was denied by Sweeney.
That would allow Campbell an additional season of eligibility.

ORLANDO — Cole Kozlowski's presence at UCF football practice earlier this week put a smile on Braeden Marshall's face.
"That's my guy," said Marshall, a senior defensive back. "... It was like a long time, no see."
They may get to hang out frequently again soon.
Following the 2025 season, the Knights and Kozlowski himself figured his college career was over. The linebacker had exhausted his four years of eligibility. He asked for a fifth, but the NCAA denied his request in January.
Then the U.S. District Court of Colorado threw him and others a lifeline on July 31, granting an injunction that allows an extra year of eligibility for Class of 2022 high school graduates.

But according to Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang, the next wave of six-figure opportunities won't be found in a Wall Street cubicle or Silicon Valley Slack channel. Instead, high-paying careers will partially come by picking up a wrench—literally.
As tech giants race to build sprawling data centers—totaling $7 trillion in global capital outlays by the end of the decade—Huang believes the world is on the cusp of what he calls the "largest infrastructure build-out in human history," which will create "a lot of jobs."
"It's wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft, and we're going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steelworkers," he said in conversation with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January.
The hands-on skills needed to construct what he described as chip, computer, and AI factories are already facing shortages—even though many roles pay over $100,000 without requiring a college degree. Few players coming through La Masia are regarded as highly as Marc Bernal, and Barcelona's faith in the young midfielder appears to be matched by his commitment to the club.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United explored the possibility of signing Bernal while negotiations involving Marcus Rashford were still active.
The Premier League side reportedly viewed the teenager as one of the brightest prospects in European football and wanted him included as part of the discussions.
However, the idea never gained traction, as Barcelona had no intention of sacrificing one of their most promising academy graduates, while Bernal himself ruled out the possibility of moving to Old Trafford.
For the midfielder, the plan has always been to continue his development in Catalonia and earn a long-term place in the first team.

According to Marcos Benito on El Chiringuito TV, Real Madrid have finalized a verbal agreement with Serie A outfit ACF Fiorentina for the permanent transfer of highly-rated young defender Victor Valdepenas.
The 19-year-old versatile centre-back has officially agreed to terms on a long-term five-year contract that ties him to the Italian side until June 2031.

Cardiff City were resoundingly beaten 6-0 by Danish side FC Midtjylland as the Bluebirds began preparations for the start of the new Championship campaign.
Boss Brian Barry-Murphy named three academy graduates in the starting eleven, with Noah Williams, Paul Moreno and Jack Sykes all included, while Yousef Salech led the line and Alex Robertson captained the side.
Midtjylland, who are preparing for a Europa League qualifier against Turkish side Besiktas later this month and are unbeaten in their opening five pre-season games, started the brighter of the two teams, who finished second in their respective leagues last season.
The Danish Cup champions led after 20 minutes when Harry Tyrer gifted the ball to Valdemar Byskov, before Franculino, who scored 17 times last season, doubled the lead as the Bluebirds were undone on the counter.
Viktor Bak added a third before the break, while Cardiff did threaten a response on the stroke of half-time, but Ollie Tanner's powerful effort was straight at keeper Elias Olafsson.

Since its 2021 inception, Florida A&M's Strike Tour has been a gateway for Rattler coaches and athletic administrators to engage with alumni across the country and region and raise money for the department.
The Strike Tour, which helps funnel FAMU graduates and donor dollars into the Rattler Athletic Fund, has made a significant difference on The Highest of Seven Hills. For example, the first one in summertime 2021 raised over $500,000 across 11 stops.
The Strike Tour returns in 2026, beginning with a stop at Broward College's Bailey Hall in Davie this Friday, July 10. Start time is at 6 p.m.
It'll feature new head football coach Quinn Fordham Gray Sr., head men's basketball coach Charlie Ward, and head women's basketball coach Bridgette Gordon. It's Gray's and Ward's first Strike Tour.
