According to MARCA, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is eagerly awaiting the best version of Bernardo Silva.
The Portuguese midfielder, who arrived in the summer, is expected to become a key figure in a Real Madrid side that is still searching for greater control and creativity in midfield.
Tuesday's UEFA Champions League meeting with Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu highlighted what many see as the major weakness of Mourinho's new Real Madrid.
The lack of control in midfield turned the match into a chaotic contest, with the Merengues ultimately surviving thanks in large part to another outstanding performance from Thibaut Courtois.
While the forwards were guilty of wasting several opportunities, Real Madrid struggled to manage the game for long periods.

Tottenham have James Maddison back. That is the headline, and for a side still trying to find rhythm and continuity early in the season, it matters.
Roberto De Zerbi confirmed the England midfielder is available again ahead of Everton's visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Maddison has returned to training after recovering from the shoulder fracture he suffered on the opening weekend against Brentford. Whether he starts is another matter.
De Zerbi was clear enough when asked about his availability. "Maddison, yes (he will be back)," Spurs boss De Zerbi said. On the prospect of him starting, he added: "I'm happy when all my players are available. It is maybe a problem for me because my decisions are not easy. But I want to manage all players together."
Tottenham will not rush him. That is sensible. Maddison missed most of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, then had a limited pre-season, and now returns from another setback. Spurs need his craft and control, though they also need him available beyond one afternoon in September.

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha tips his teammate and compatriot Andrey Santos to turn heads this season.
The defensive midfielder was the club's first summer signing, completing a transfer from Chelsea for £48 million.
The Brazilian was later followed by another two midfielders in the shape Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, as the Red Devils completely revamped the department.

Thanks to his relatively early arrival, Santos was a mainstay in Michael Carrick's starting lineup in pre-season, forming a solid partnership with Mason Mount prior to the latter's injury.

For those of an earlier generation, ******* an and football had one connection: the adventures of Captain Tsubasa, known as Oliver Hutton in the West, the fictional young striker who would go on to play in Brazil before moving to Europe. The cartoon became a reality with Hidetoshi Nakata, the distinctive and talented attacking midfielder who made his name with Perugia and won the Scudetto with Roma, paving the way for a wave of ******* anese players in Serie A at the turn of the millennium. One of them even made his way to Milano, via Emilia-Romagna.
Yuto Nagatomo, the last ******* anese player in the history of the Nerazzurri, and also the first, turns 40 today.
He arrived through one of those winding transfer routes, in a loan swap with Cesena in January 2011. Davide Santon went to Emilia-Romagna, while Inter welcomed a ******* anese full-back who was barely 1.70 metres tall, and powered by seemingly endless batteries that always left him with more energy than everyone else. Seven of his first nine goals for Inter came in the final half-hour, when he was still charging forward. The secret? Umeboshi. ******* anese salted plums, a great remedy for fatigue. He ate them before every game. It was also the result of a thoroughly Eastern discipline, combined with a football education that arrived slightly later than usual. Yuto did not come through the academy at a major club. He played football at school until he was 20. At first, this was a tactical limitation; later, it became a strength. He moved in ways which were neither conventional nor codified, which led him into extreme situations. He would, for example, end up in the opposition box, more often than you might expect, even scoring a header at Marassi in 2011. It was the kind of game you can picture, with Nagatomo scoring 1-0, despite almost always being the shortest player on the team. Or right on the edge of the box, as in Turin the following year, when, at the end of a scrappy but determined move, he set up Rodrigo Palacio for Inter's final goal in a 3-1 win away to Juventus, their first victory there in nine years. Or when he had the courage, or perhaps the recklessness, to take the decisive penalty; Inter vs Pordenone, a one-off Coppa Italia tie, an astonishing 0-0 after 120 minutes. It was the ******* anese player who spared Inter the embarrassment in a half-frozen San Siro, called upon by the entire stadium to take the final penalty. "Yuto, Yuto, Yuto." It was an inevitable goal which secured a place in the next round.
Nagatomo really did become Captain Tsubasa, both because, like the hero of the manga and anime, he made it to San Siro, and because he actually appeared in the manga, or rather, in Holly and Benji. In 2019, he even dubbed himself. Because sometimes it is hard to tell fantasy from reality.
Happy Birthday, Yuto-San.

Colo Colo's young forward, Leandro Hernández, became one of the biggest surprises in the Chile National Team squad for the North American tour, where they will face Canada, the United States, and Mexico. After establishing himself with the 'Cacique,' the attacker will receive his first call-up to the senior team.
Speaking with Arturo Vidal, the young Alba talent said he is ready for the challenge. "I feel prepared because I think I've improved a lot, especially physically; I used to struggle in physical battles, and today I'm better," said the Colo Colo standout.
Looking ahead to the upcoming matches, Hernández sent a message to coach Nicolás Córdova about his ideal position: he made it clear that he prefers to play centrally as an attacking midfielder rather than out wide, seeking more contact with the ball.

Brazil forward Richarlison, meanwhile, is currently in a dispute over his contract after a proposed move to Vasco da Gama fell through.
He is understood to be exploring his options, with BBC Sport reporting on Thursday the 29-year-old is keen to be released from the remainder of his current deal, which runs out next summer - but Spurs can also trigger a 12-month extension.

After drawing 0-0 with Ecuador in their Conmebol U-15 Evolution League opener, the Women's National Team looked for a faster game and sharper passing, ending their second match of the continental tournament with a 4-2 win over Colombia. With the result, the Canarinho remains in contention for first place in the group and the ****** le.
Colombia's first shot on goal came after 25 seconds, but Brazil, focused on regaining possession and controlling the ball, surged down the right through Nicoly, who crossed for Marcela Bontorim to head home and score the Canarinho's first goal in less than two minutes.
Brazil's number 13 found the net again in the 33rd minute after taking advantage of a lapse in the Colombian marking and receiving a pass alone inside the box on the left, from a free kick taken from midfield.
The opponents cut the deficit two minutes later with an individual play by Lelys Victoria, who got past three Brazilian defenders and shot into the goalkeeper's right corner. Before the end of the first half, Brazil put together a quick one-two and attacked through midfielder Melissa, who took a shot, the goalkeeper parried it, and the rebound fell to Nina de Deus, who made sure to score her goal — the Canarinho's third of the match.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Colombia won a penalty, taken by forward Alejandra Díaz, who struck it into Nathy's right corner, giving the Brazilian goalkeeper no time to reach the ball. The Canarinho did not let up and, in the 35th minute, scored their fourth goal. Once again, after a loose ball from a set piece and a mistake by the Colombian goalkeeper, Mavi, wearing number 9, made no mistake and scored hers.

On a cloudy, seventeen-degree evening in the federal capital, 1. FC Union Berlin (0-1-1, 15th) played host to FC Schalke 04 (0-1-1, 14th) in the third matchweek of their 2026/27 Bundesliga campaigns at Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Union Berlin, in their eighth Bundesliga season, managed to draw Eintracht Frankfurt 3-3 on the opening matchweek, but failed to land a single shot on target in an 0-4 defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen last weekend. As for Schalke, who return to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2022/23, they lost their opener 0-3 to FC Augsburg but managed to follow it with a scoreless draw against the reigning German champions, FC Bayern München.
This is the seventh meeting between the two sides in their histories, with the current head-to-head record an even 1-4-1. Schalke's lone win came in 2019/20, a 2-1 result at Veltins-Arena - Union's only victory was a dominant 6-1 result in the 2022/23 season, with that match also having been played in Gelsenkirchen. With the other sixteen teams yet to play their third matches, the winning side from this match would move up to seventh place in the table, and will likely be in the middle of the table by the time that all matches are complete on Sunday.
The hosts, in red, would kick off the match and go left to right in the opening term, with Schalke, in blue, going right to left when on the attack. It would take ten minutes for the visitors to get the first chance, as a through ball from Robin Gosens on the left side of the Union half would reach Kenan Karaman at the edge of the box. The Turkish striker and team captain saw enough ******* e to direct a shot towards the top-left corner, and did not miss by much, as his right-footed attempt went over the hands of a jumping Frederik Rønnow and slightly over the bar.
Schalke would win a corner just five minutes later, whipped in near-post by Adil Aouchiche; the cross would be met by a powerful header from Dejan Ljubičić, but the Austrian attacking midfielder would send the ball well above the top-right corner and out of play. Aouchiche would then get another chance of his own in the nineteenth minute, but his right-footed curler towards the top-left corner was fantastically denied by a leaping Rønnow.

Yves Bissouma is one of several midfield free agents who could contribute to Juventus' success this season, with the midfielder now available for a transfer this summer.
The Bianconeri have a void in midfield and will be doing their best to ensure they fill it with a good player in the coming weeks, but finding the right option is proving difficult at the moment.
They do not want to sign just any player and may be forced to enter the market for more than one midfielder if they suffer another injury in that position.
Juve are an outstanding team, but no side can survive too many injuries, and they are now considering adding Bissouma to their squad as he searches for his next club.
Tottenham released him at the end of last season, and he is being tipped to move to Serie A, where Lazio are also interested in adding him to their squad.

For most who watched Manchester United's pre-season friendlies, one thing stood out clearly: in Andrey Santos, the club had signed an exceptionally talented midfielder.
The Brazilian proved an instant hit. He brought composure and **** urance to the engine room, constantly demanded the ball, dropped deep to receive it, and displayed an impressive passing range.
Many United fans also noted the excellent understanding he quickly developed with Mason Mount. Together, they formed a lively and effective partnership in the middle of the park.
Both having missed the World Cup and featuring heavily throughout pre-season, a Mount-Santos midfield looked the natural choice for Michael Carrick at the start of the campaign, while he gradually eased Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans into the side. However, Mount picked up an injury that derailed those plans.

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has dismissed Elliot Anderson's jibe that City are "kings of Manchester" ahead of Sunday's derby.
Already trailing five points behind their bitter rivals, United will face Manchester City at Old Trafford with Anderson's taunt ringing in their ears.
Anderson joined City from Nottingham Forest for £116 million ($156 million) in the close-season after United refused to enter a bidding war for the England midfielder.
The 23-year-old can expect a hostile reception from United fans after adding fuel to the Manchester rivalry.
"For as long as I've known Manchester, City have been the kings of Manchester," Anderson said following his arrival at the Etihad Stadium.

Owen Hargreaves couldn't speak highly enough of Kobbie Mainoo ahead of Manchester United's clash with Sabah last night.

Mainoo was eventually replaced by summer signing Andrey Santos in the 64th minute, while Benjamin Sesko simultaneously made way for Joshua Zirkzee for his first appearance of the season.
When United got their Premier League campaign underway last month, the 21-year-old started on the bench for the opening fixture against Hull City.

The last few days have been very productive for Real Madrid, both on and off the pitch. Jose Mourinho's side defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in their opening match of the 2026-27 Champions League, while there have also been major breakthroughs regarding new contracts for multiple key players.
In the last 24 hours, it was revealed that Arda Guler has committed to a new contract, with the Türkiye international set to extend his stay at the Bernabeu until 2032. Fellow midfielder Jude Bellingham is also in the process of agreeing a renewal, as Real Madrid bosses seek to tie down two players that are seen as the present and future of the first team.
Now, there is further good news for Real Madrid fans, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Thibaut Courtois has agreed to extend his stay at the Bernabeu. The veteran goalkeeper's current deal is due to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, although he has committed to remaining at the club for at least one more year.
Courtois has been a fantastic servant for Real Madrid over the last eight years. Having joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2018, the Belgian has already racked up 338 appearances across all competitions, and he should significantly add to this number by the time he leaves the club, whenever that may be.
Courtois has already spoken of his desire to retire at Real Madrid, and if he continues to perform at a very high level, there is a good chance that his wish is granted – especially given that the club has yet to secure a long-term replacement. The decision on this matter will come when the time is right, but for now, all that matters is the Belgian shot-stopper will remain at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2028 at the very least.

Spectacular goals, peerless technique and a true Nerazzurri heart: born in Belgrade on 11 September 1978, Dejan Stankovic celebrates his 48th birthday today. Deki spent nine years in Nerazzurri colours, from January 2004 to 2013, making 326 appearances, scoring 42 goals and lifting an incredible 15 trophies: one Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup, five Scudetti, and the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana four times apiece. Those achievements also earned him a place in the Club's Hall of Fame, fitting recognition of his deep bond with the Nerazzurri. To mark his birthday, Internazionale Morning Club looks back on his Inter journey through the story of one unforgettable match: the 4-3 derby victory over AC Milan on 28 October 2006.
Take a moment to picture the goal you would most like to score if you were a footballer. Your first thought is probably the right one: a goal from the halfway line. Perhaps even on the volley. Now imagine not merely dreaming of it, but actually doing it. And then doing it again in a Champions League quarter-final. This is no dream. This is Dejan Stankovic.
And yet, on reflection, perhaps there was no single position in which Dejan Stankovic was irreplaceable. He could play anywhere in a flat 4-4-2 or a midfield diamond. Look at it just as objectively, however, and it becomes impossible to leave the Serbian midfielder out of any all-time Inter XI. Indeed, he is almost always there. He went straight into the Club's Hall of Fame in 2019, receiving more votes than any other midfielder.
It is difficult to name an aspect of the game at which Deki did not excel. We have already mentioned his shooting: there were plenty of goals, and they always seemed to matter. Four came in derbies, for starters. Two arrived during the 2009/10 Champions League campaign, helping Inter emerge unbeaten from testing group-stage encounters away to Rubin Kazan and at home to Dynamo Kyiv - two important steps on the road to Champions League success.
Choosing one defining moment is no easy task. It would be all too obvious to celebrate those two masterpieces from the halfway line - or, in truth, from even farther out. Their time will come. Instead, we have chosen another: a goal scored in a derby that all but confirmed a shift in the balance of power in Milano. After two decades in which the Rossoneri generally held the upper hand, from 1986 to 2006, the 20 years since have largely belonged to the Nerazzurri.

Aston Villa v **** nal, August 2024. Morgan Rogers receives a pass facing his own goal and Declan Rice is immediately on his back, but the Villa midfielder takes the ball with the outside of his right foot and swivels into **** e, leaving Rice behind. The **** e is quickly filled by **** nal's midfield enforcer Thomas Partey, but Rogers knocks it past Partey and races around his back to regather the ball, leaving the Ghanaian splayed on the grass. Their tussle at least buys Rice some time to catch up, but as he lunges in to make the tackle, Rogers takes a clever touch and Rice concedes a clumsy foul.
Arsenal would go on to win but it was an afternoon full of moments like that one in which Rogers tormented his opponents. After the game, Mikel Arteta marvelled at his performance. On Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp compared Rogers to "Jonah Lomu in his prime", and when you saw the trail of **** nal bodies left on the floor, you understood exactly what he meant.
The Lomu comparison touched on what makes Rogers rare, even unique, in world football, and perhaps helps to explain why Chelsea FC were prepared to spend £117m to sign him this summer. Rogers is a blend of football genres, a walking oxymoron, powerful and graceful, hardy and agile, heavy and light all at once, like some contorted beast with the shoulders of a buffalo and the feet of a squirrel on an errand.
Morgan Rogers has made an impressive start to life at Chelsea (Getty)
There are other robust ball-carriers at the top of the game: Antoine **** yo and Jude Bellingham come to mind; Ryan Gravenberch, Manu Kone and Rice all perform similar functions from deep. But none have Rogers' package of strength and balance, quick feet and rapid acceleration, that creative eye and subtle movement between the lines. In an increasingly **** genized world of coaching and industrialised talent production, Rogers is something of a unicorn forward.

MEDELLÍN, Colombia (AP) — After a brief stint with MLS side Minnesota United in the United States, Colombia soccer international James Rodríguez decided to return home on Thursday.
Rodríguez, a former Real Madrid midfielder who was a free agent, will play for Atlético Nacional, the most decorated club that is based in Medellín, in his home nation.
Atlético Nacional did not disclose the financial details of the deal or the duration of it.
Rodríguez, 35, has bounced around since 2022, with stints with Olympiacos in Greece, Sao Paulo in Brazil, Rayo Vallecano in Spain, Club León in Mexico and Minnesota United in the MLS, where he played just six matches in the first semester of the year.
The midfielder helped lead Colombia to the Copa America final in 2024, the country's first such appearance in 23 years. He has 31 goals in 131 career international matches with Colombia.

Ayyoub Bouaddi has handled everything thrown at him since joining Manchester City with remarkable composure - though his leisurely strolls may need rerouting after recent events.
The Moroccan midfielder has been able to traverse the city center's sidewalks over recent weeks, moving about unnoticed and unrecognized despite sealing an £85 million ($117 million) transfer from Lille. However, the teenager with a distinctive look can't remain incognito much longer after delivering an impressive performance in his maiden start for the Blues.
City shelled out a premium price for Bouaddi - exceeding what rival clubs were prepared to pay - because they were confident he could slot directly into a squad that lost Rodri and Bernardo Silva from their engine room during the summer window. The 18-year-old has been gradually integrated but entered the lineup for the UEFA Champions League fixture in Porto, replacing £116 million ($155.2 million) signing Elliot Anderson.

While more experienced teammates around him struggled, Bouaddi provided a steadying influence from kickoff and moved effortlessly across the turf to give Enzo Maresca's squad command of proceedings. The manager was all smiles when questioned about the player postgame and joined a growing roster of those who've encountered Bouaddi in praising him as an exceptional prospect.

Davide Frattesi has long wanted to play for Juventus, and the midfielder was keen to join the Bianconeri during the last transfer window. He was reportedly willing to wait for the club to make a formal approach, hoping the move to the Allianz Stadium would eventually materialise.
Frattesi had previously rejected Juventus when he was playing for Sassuolo, but he was ready to make amends and believed the opportunity to join the Turin giants was one worth pursuing. Luciano Spalletti had also become one of the best managers he had worked with, adding another important factor to the situation.
Juventus had made enquiries about Frattesi and appeared interested in bringing him to the club. The midfielder was prepared to wait for them to make their move, while Inter Milan were also open to allowing him to leave during that transfer window.
However, the Bianconeri ultimately failed to follow up on their initial interest with a formal attempt to complete the transfer. Despite Frattesi's willingness to wait for Juventus, the club did not push the situation forward, and the opportunity eventually disappeared.
Instead, Frattesi moved to Lazio, where he has enjoyed an impressive start to the season. The midfielder has quickly established himself as an important player for the Eagles and has been in outstanding scoring form.

Napoli have said Scott McTominay's heart surgery "was a complete success" and expect the Scotland midfielder to resume training this month.
The 29-year-old's ablation procedure - a minimally invasive operation to correct irregular heart rhythms - took place at Spire Manchester Hospital on Tuesday morning.
McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes of Napoli's 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August.
A mild benign arrhythmia was discovered, prompting the corrective treatment.
Napoli, who said in statement that "McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training", had expected the former Manchester United player to return to action after the international break in early October.
