CLEVELAND — A pivotal ALCS Game 5 that looked on paper like a premium pitchers' duel dissolved into something much different on Sunday, as the Tampa Bay Rays took down the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 at Progressive Field to move within one win of a World Series berth. While the final score suggests a closely contested ballgame, the tale of the two starting pitchers tells otherwise.
When the AL Cy Young Award is announced next month, it's a safe bet that Yankees ace Cam Schlittler will take home the honor. Toronto's Dylan Cease appears to be the likeliest runner-up. Beyond that, both Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen and Guardians rookie lefty Parker Messick have a strong case to be the third finalist, based on their fantastic regular seasons. Rasmussen ranked third in fWAR (5.0) and fourth in ERA (2.67) behind Schlittler and Cease; Messick ranked fourth in fWAR (4.9) and third in ERA (2.56).
These were the starting pitchers for Game 5 on Sunday. Rasmussen had tossed six innings of two-run ball in Game 1 — but in a Rays loss. Messick covered five innings and allowed three runs in Game 2 — but in a Guardians loss. With the series tied at two games apiece, Sunday's contest gave each frontline arm the tantalizing chance to push his club closer to the American League pennant.

For neutral observers hoping for maximum October drama, the blueprint for a best-case clash could be found in July, when Rasmussen and Messick traded blows in a 1-0 Rays victory at Tropicana Field. In that one, Messick allowed the lone run across 7 ⅔ innings while Rasmussen yielded just one hit across seven shutout frames. If a similar game were on tap Sunday — this time with supremely elevated stakes — that would mean a timely hit or two would be required to seize a narrow victory. But such visions of a repeat nailbiter enforced by these elite starters were quashed in a hurry.

Five-star shooting guard Adan Diggs has narrowed his list of offers to seven schools, he told Rivals. Moving forward, the 6-foot-4 senior out of Millennium High School (AZ) will consider Arizona, Arkansas, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, and USC.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is in the middle of a strong season. While a lingering back injury has consistently led to Clark landing on the injury report, she has been able to stay on the floor for the most part. Clark, however, was limited to only 13 games played last year — which happened to be Sophie Cunningham's first season with the Fever. 2026 has given Cunningham an opportunity to see Clark's game on a more consistent basis, and one specific element of Clark's approach has especially impressed the WNBA veteran.
"I will say, yeah, she (Clark) didn't play last year and that was my first time really being on the team and being her teammate, but I really do feel like this year she is using her body so, so well," Cunningham said on her new podcast, No Hesitation with Sophie Cunningham Drew Hanlen. "Like she's strong, she's using the glass. Her jump-shots are going in and it's efficient and it's good for us. But I do think that, like, her body control this year has been huge."
Clark's 22.5 points per game, 45.6 percent field goal percentage and 37.3 three-point percentage all represent career-high marks. She may not win the WNBA MVP Award with players such as A'ja Wilson and her Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell also playing at high levels, but Clark will certainly be in the conversation. She could even be a top three finalist for the first time (Clark finished fourth during her rookie season in 2024).

If there's one thing you learn after a few seasons of New York Fashion Week, it's that the shows are only half the fun. The spring/summer 2027 season is officially underway, and so is the party circuit. Things kicked off on September 8, when Siegelman Stable hosted a dinner at Pendry Manhattan West, where Carmelo Anthony, US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe, and New York Knicks guard Tyler Kolek, fresh off the team's championship season, all made appearances.
But the following night really got things going. On September 9, Bulgari brought Dua Lipa, Lisa, and Anne Hathaway to the High Line for a special Serpenti Infinito unveiling before the festivities moved to Boom. Lipa arrived at the after-party with her new husband, Callum Turner, and later hit the dance floor with Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams. Elsewhere in the city, Ugg and Willy Chavarria toasted the global launch of their collaboration at Ray's, while Coach followed its 85th-anniversary runway show with a club-style after-party of its own. If Washington is going to succeed, Demond Williams needs to have a high usage rate as both a passer and runner. He is at his best when he's on the move, and the Huskies are as well. That's my primary takeaway from Washington's frustrating, but earned, season-opening Apple Cup victory.
On the one hand, Washington's performance for most of the afternoon was frustrating because it looked as lethargic as it had at times in the previous two seasons. On the other hand, if you watched other Week 1 games, there were a handful of victorious teams that looked stuck in the mud. None of which battled their in-state rival.
There's a reason Nick Saban referred to headlines as rat poison. Washington was highly regarded throughout the offseason. It kicked off the season with a shiny No. 17 next to its name and is led by a quarterback who many believe could be a Heisman Trophy finalist. Overall, the consensus is that Washington is the popular pick to be 2027's sleeper team. Those elements added to the discomfort of UW's slow start.
Though it eventually gave up a touchdown in the fourth quarter, Washington's defense was sensational. It shot itself in the foot by picking up unnecessary penalties, but overall it was dominant. Defensive backs Jeron Jones and Alex McLaughlin both logged interceptions while Isaiah Ward forced a fumble, then recovered it. Washington would've had four takeaways, but Rylon Dillard-Allen picked up a questionable targeting penalty after thumping Wazzu quarterback Caden Pinnick.
Speaking of penalties, UW must be better in that area, without question. Washington racked up 130 penalty yards to Wazzu's 50. Washington had 12 fewer penalty yards than Pinnick had passing.

After the Tyrolean side's surprising equaliser, five-goal scorer Magdalena Schwarz and her team-mates added more than a dozen goals. It's something of a similar story in Pittsburgh. After finishing second in the Metro last season, after a string of campaigns in the division's basement before that, the Penguins enter 2026-27 looking to prove their resurgence was more than a one-year fluke.
They'll do so with a lineup that's seen plenty of turnover this summer. New offensive talents Andrei Kuzmenko and Nick Robertson are dotted among the forward corps' bottom six, and new blue-liners Trevor van Riemsdyk and Kaedan Korczak will slot in to replace key depth pieces. The most important change, though, might be the fact that the net will be turned over to young Arturs Silovs.
The 25-year-old split netminding duties with a veteran partner for the entirety of last season — first with Tristan Jarry and then Stuart Skinner following the trade that brought the two-time Cup finalist to Pittsburgh. It was Skinner who got the start for the first few games of the post-season, before Silovs took over and nearly pulled Pittsburgh back from an 0-3 series deficit. With Skinner headed to Winnipeg, it'll be up to Silovs and young Sergei Murashov to keep Sidney Crosby's club in the post-season picture once again.

Russian veteran Karen Khachanov defeated an ailing third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime Thursday in the second round of the US Open in four sets.
Khachanov, unseeded this year but a familiar face in the latter stages of big tournaments, beat Auger-Aliaissime 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
The 26-year-old Canadian, a two-time semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows, eked out a first-set tiebreaker against the hard-hitting Russian, who himself made the US Open semifinals in 2022.
But Auger-Aliassime, who appeared to give up quickly on some ***** , was undone by a rash of unforced errors in the subsequent sets. He made 47 in all, compared with 30 for Khachanov.
Khachanov also won several key points with blistering backhand down-the-line winners.
