On Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul in straight sets to reach the quarterfinal of the US Open. His most formidable opponent awaited him after the match, however.

Alcaraz joined Andy Roddick, Mary Joe Fernandez, and Rece Davis at the desk for ESPN's live coverage. Roddick asked Alcaraz for "a quick word" on Ben Shelton and Stefanos Tsitsipas and "the challenges that both of them could bring." Alcaraz looked completely dumbfounded and asked Roddick to repeat the question.
"You're either gonna play Shelton or Tsitsipas," Roddick said. "Maybe just a word on both of them."

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is live THIS AFTERNOON (Sat., Sept. 5, 2026) with UFC Paris, streaming live online via Paramount+. The event happens at Accor Arena in Paris, France, featuring a special Octagon newcomer in the main event.
Salahdine Parnasse vs. Dan Hooker is our main event, going down in the Lightweight division. Parnasse is a long-time former KSW champion who made a big splash with his one and done appearance at MVP MMA. The reason he was done there was because UFC wanted to poach him out of that fledgling promotion before he drew too many serious mixed martial arts (MMA) fans over to it. Hooker comes into this one off two losses and looking very much like a sacrificial lamb. However, as last week taught us, -600 odds can be overcome.
The co-main is an all French affair, in the Featherweight division, with Fares Ziam meeting Axel Sola. Both of these guys are action fighters known for putting on a show. They should get the crowd roaring in Paris, even if it's not obvious to the locals whom they should be cheering for.
Rounding out the main card is Michael Page vs. Nursulton Ruziboev, Daniil Donchenko vs. Punahele Soriano, Kurtis Campbell vs. Trevor Peek and Losene Keita vs. Muhammad Naimov. Page might be trying to fight out of his UFC contract here, which is the reason UFC has pared him with a big, rangy striker who can also make you quit on the ground.
The featured "Prelim" is Morgan Charriere vs. Felipe Lima. The undercard also boasts Mario Pinto vs. Ryan Spann, Oumar Sy vs. Modestas Bukauskas and Nathaniel Wood against late replacement Pavel Andrusca. Further down the card we have Michael Aljarouj vs. Fabia Sintes, Nora Cornolle vs. Klaudia Sygula, Matthieu Duclos vs. Lucas Felipe Dias and Delphine Benouaich vs. Sofia Montenegro to make up the numbers. Aljarouj does look like an intriguing prospect, though.

Former champion Daniil Medvedev had a spot of bother with a pair of birds at the US Open.
Two feathered visitors perched on the net during Medvedev's second-round clash with American wild card Sebastian Gorzny, while a point was being played.
The rally continued for several more shots until Medvedev hit what he thought was a winner, only for the umpire to intervene and call for the point to be replayed, much to the seventh seed's irritation.
"This is the most ridiculous decision I've seen in my life," he raged.
The Russian recovered his composure to run out a comfortable 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 winner.

Cameron Norrie extended the upset chaos at the ATP Montreal Masters on Thursday, saving a match point in defeating Alex de Minaur 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.
The battling British winner trailed a set and a double break against the Australian third seed, who folded in the final set of an epic lasting for almost three hours.

With hockey taking its summer break, my thoughts turn to reminiscing about the past 18 seasons during which I have had the privilege of observing the Florida Panthers from the pressbox.
While the Panthers’ players are out golfing, the front office has been hard at work.
The start of free agency and the Panthers’ annual development camp, where young talent as showcased and evaluated, overlapped.
With both Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov unsigned going into free agency and a host of players with expiring contracts, Bill Zito and staff had a very active few weeks.
If history is an indicator, they may not be done yet despite a seemingly set roster.

The marks are in after two days of NHL free agency and the Detroit Red Wings have failed to impress NHL experts.
Daily Faceoff and the ******* ociated Press rank the Red Wings among the losers in free agency despite the additions of forwards Viktor Arvidsson, Keegan Kolesar and goalie Daniil Tarasov.
"Viktor Arvidsson is a good signing in a vacuum coming off a resurgent season. But zoom out and we have a team riding 10 consecutive playoff misses, sitting on captain Dylan Larkin's trade request waiting on the right deal.
"Do additions like Arvidsson and grinder Keegan Kolesar mean anything in the context of a team whose direction is unknown? If Steve Yzerman was not Steve Yzerman, he'd have been fired from the Red Wings GM chair twice by now. What a disaster his tenure has been."

On the day qualifying offers were due to Restricted Free Agents, the Colorado Avalanche bypassed the process by inking Taylor Makar to a two-year contract extension beginning the 2026-27 season with a $875k cap hit at the NHL level.
This is a nice deal for the younger Makar after only one year of pro hockey under his belt, with 24 points scored in 52 games and 12 games of call-up time in the NHL. No doubt holding arbitration rights gave the left wing some important leverage. The $300k guaranteed in year one of the deal is a significant raise on the $80k paid in the minors on his Entry Level Contract. The most significant portion of the extension is the ***** p up to $900k on a one-way deal in the 2027-28 season and is a sizable investment by the Avalanche. Once this deal expires Makar will be 27-years-old and an Unrestricted Free Agent.
In other Restricted Free Agent news, reports are forward Daniil Gushchin did not receive a qualifying offer after his one-year stint with the organization. It's safe to ***** ume that after the Avalanche traded for another winger in Fabian Lysell that he was extended a qualifying offer. Daniil Donchenko continued his impressive UFC start earlier today (Sat., June 27, 2026) at UFC Baku LIVE on Paramount+ from inside National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan, putting a stop to Octagon newcomer
Theodor Berggren with a second-round TKO (head kick and punches).
This was supposed to be a big showing for Donchenko, but Berggren put up a good fight early on. He was getting tagged, but the short-notice replacement fighter was holding his own against Donchenko. That all changed in the second round when Donchenko landed a stiff head kick. It rocked Berggren and sent him crashing to the canvas. This allowed Donchenko the opportunity to move in for the kill along the cage. He landed a few hard right hands after Berggren returned to his feet and eventually dropped Berggren once more for the finish.

Ooo interesting. I kinda like Daniil tomorrow.... He's lost his weapons on attack, but his defensive weapons have arguably improved. Top 3 in almost all return metrics this year, including 1st in points won per return game.
