Ben Shelton needed four sets to get through his second-round matchup at the U.S. Open, but the former Florida star rallied and advanced to the third round for a fourth consecutive year. He is the only left-handed American man to accomplish that feat over the past 30 years.
Shelton defeated Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No. 8 seed struck 44 winners against 35 unforced errors and found another gear in the biggest moments of the match.
"I am super happy with the way the match went," Shelton said afterward. "It was a battle until the end, and I thought Hubi played outstanding today."
Shelton won the opening set before Hurkacz answered in the second. Neither player gave much away in the third, but Shelton controlled the tiebreak 7-3 — just as he did in the first round against Tallon Griekspoor — to regain the lead.
The fourth set stayed tight until Shelton broke Hurkacz late to close out the match. He celebrated emphatically after match point, later explaining that the reaction came from both excitement and relief after Hurkacz threatened to push the match to a fifth set.

Russian veteran Karen Khachanov defeated an ailing third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime Thursday in the second round of the US Open in four sets.
Khachanov, unseeded this year but a familiar face in the latter stages of big tournaments, beat Auger-Aliaissime 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
The 26-year-old Canadian, a two-time semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows, eked out a first-set tiebreaker against the hard-hitting Russian, who himself made the US Open semifinals in 2022.
But Auger-Aliassime, who appeared to give up quickly on some ***** , was undone by a rash of unforced errors in the subsequent sets. He made 47 in all, compared with 30 for Khachanov.
Khachanov also won several key points with blistering backhand down-the-line winners.

Only Tyquan Thornton, Alec Pierce and Kyle Williams were targeted more downfield!!! That will boggle the mind. Fast-forward to this year, the Rams need better talent at "WR," and Ferguson could be the answer based on what he provided last season. Davante Adams was dangled in trade discussions open to the public after a down season beyond the goal line, and trading for Tutu Atwell on Aug. 27 is never a great sign for the rest of the room. "It's been a really tough five months for me, so to be able to step into Arthur Ashe and be able to compete again… As I said before the tournament, I couldn't have decided to come back at a better tournament, here at the U.S. Open, here in New York," Alcaraz said after defeating Safiullin in straight sets.

Faria came out with a different look. After an exchange of easy holds, Alcaraz pressured Faria's serve in a 14-point game that ended in a hold for the challenger. Faria then returned the favor by breaking Alcaraz in another 14-point game to take a 4-3 lead and, later, the set.

Aryna Sabalenka isn't having any issues whatsoever in New York.
Sabalenka, after significant issues at earlier Grand Slams this year, rolled into the third round of the US Open with ease on Wednesday night. She cruised to a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Polina Iatcenko at Arthur Ashe Stadium. And she only needed 54 minutes to do so.
It marked her second straight sets victory so far at the US Open, following a slightly less dominant win over Camila Osorio in the opening round. Sabalenka will now take on Kamilla Rakhimova in the third round. Rakhimova beat Oksana Selekhmeteva in straight sets in her second-round match.
Sabalenka looked unstoppable in the first set, and rolled to a dominant 5-0 lead before Iatcenko managed to find a little bit of stability in the match. Up until that point. Sabalenka had only dropped seven total points. There was nothing Iatcenko could do.
Iatcenko got on the board finally with a narrow win in the sixth game, but that was all she could manage. Sabalenka won the next four points, and wasted no time doing it, to close out the first set in less than 25 minutes.

China's Bu Yunchaokete produced one of the US Open's most surprising results so far on Wednesday, drubbing rising Spanish star Rafael Jodar in straight sets.
Bu, ranked 124th, needed less than two hours to take down 12th-seeded Jodar, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 in one of the most one-sided scorelines of this year's championships.
A native of Xinjiang, Bu lost in the final round of qualifying, but was granted a spot as a "lucky loser" when Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis withdrew with an injury.
Bu had finished his warmup Tuesday morning ahead of a planned flight that evening when he found out he could play. Now he's in the second round against American Michael Zheng, a two-time US collegiate champion.
"It's nothing you can lose with a lucky loser," Bu said after the match, describing his approach as "enjoy the crowd and enjoy the court and play one of the best players in this year."

Unseeded Bu Yunchaokete made history at the 2026 US Open on Wednesday. He became the first "lucky loser" to beat a top-15 seed at a tennis major in the Open Era, which began in 1968.
The term "lucky loser" represents the player who lost the final qualifying match for the major but still gets added to the field because players in the draw had to withdraw.
Yunchaokete replaced Thanasi Kokkinakis in the tournament and found out only on Tuesday that he would be playing the 12-seeded Rafal Jodar on Wednesday. Kokkinakis withdrew due to an ankle sprain and calf injury suffered at the Cincinnati Masters leading up to the US Open.
Jodar is ranked as the No. 13 men's tennis player in the world entering the tournament, but was not able to build any momentum on Wednesday. Yunchaokete didn't just pull off the upset; he dominated.
The 24-year-old allowed Jodar to win only four games in the match, advancing in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

College fantasy football ***** yst Eric Froton sets the table for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
Sutton Smith had missed some time early in camp which led to speculation that Arkansas holdover from the Sam Pittman era, Braylen Russell, would get the first crack at the starting RB job. The Hogs were among the most effective running teams in the nation last year, ranking first in rushing success rate and yards per carry. Former Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield takes over this year and brings with him a rush-oriented philosophy that was a catalyst for the Tigers' fourth overall ranking in EPA/rush.
Smith is now the preferred CFF option of the two and deserves a ***** p in your rankings, but I still think Russell will see carries and eat into Smith's workload.
With Washington's top two rushers (Jonah Coleman/Adam Mohammed) departing, there is ample opportunity for someone to take the reins. Jordan Washington is the leading returnee with 233 rushing yards on a sparkling 8.6 YPC last year, while Oregon transfer Jayden Limar brings experience and production on a per-carry basis to the competition. So it was quite unexpected when Carr led the competition out of spring, as he only managed to accrue 14 yards on four carries during his freshman season.
Washington's 44th ranked schedule is one of the most favorable in the Big Ten, while their excellent offensive line averaged 3.4 yards before contact (10th in FBS). If Carr can maintain his hold on the job, he could develop into a major CFF contributor.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the offseason determined to create more competition and depth along the edge. After watching Jack Pyburn throughout the preseason, they may eventually wonder whether they let one of their more intriguing young pass rushers get away too soon.
Tampa Bay waived Pyburn as part of its final roster cuts despite the undrafted rookie putting together one of the strongest preseasons on the team. Pyburn finished with four sacks, including two against the New York Jets and another two in the preseason finale against Jacksonville. His four sacks were tied for the most among edge defenders during the preseason. A numbers problem was always going to exist. The Buccaneers spent significant resources rebuilding the position, adding first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. and veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad to a group that already included Yaya Diaby, David Walker and Anthony Nelson. With only so many roster spots available, Tampa Bay was eventually going to have to make a difficult decision. The gamble was likely that he would clear waivers and potentially remain available to the organization. Instead, the Kansas City Chiefs claimed him almost immediately, placing Pyburn on their 53-man roster and preventing Tampa Bay from bringing him back.
Preseason sacks don't automatically translate to the regular season, and Pyburn was often working against backups. Still, he did exactly what a young player is supposed to do with limited opportunities. Todd Bowles praised his work ethic and production after his two sack performance against New York, noting that Pyburn had taken advantage of the opportunities he received despite being buried behind a deep group of edge rushers, as Pyburn has a 21.4 percent pass rush productivity rate on true pass sets and a 23.8 percent win rate during the preseason.
The Buccaneers couldn't keep every promising edge defender, and their revamped group should be significantly deeper than it was a year ago. But if injuries strike or Pyburn develops into a contributor for Kansas City, this move will become much harder to defend. Tampa Bay spent the offseason searching for young players who could get after the quarterback. Pyburn showed legitimate signs of being one of them, and now the Buccaneers won't get the chance to find out what he could have become in their defense.

Sept 2 (Reuters) - AI company Owkin said on Wednesday it has signed ‌a licensing deal with Germany's Boehringer ‌Ingelheim, giving the drugmaker access to its AI research platform and patient data to speed up discovery of drugs for cancer and immunity-related diseases.
The deal adds Boehringer to a growing ‌list of drugmakers ⁠using Owkin's AI technology, "K Pro". AstraZeneca licensed it in May, while ⁠Sanofi expanded its partnership with a five-year agreement in June.

Andoh delivered a 1,000-yard rushing season as a freshman, topping 100 yards five times and scoring 15 touchdowns. His sophomore year was interrupted by an injury which limited him to five games, but he still managed to put up 483 yards and another eight touchdowns. He'll have the benefit of running behind the Greyhounds' huge offensive line, and getting back over the 1,000-yard mark is well within reach.

Apple stock just had its best day in five weeks as John Ternus took over from Tim Cook as CEO, becoming just the company's third chief executive this century.
The rally has pushed Apple away from a support zone near $310 and back toward its late-July record area near $340 — giving shareholders a natural way to define both their downside and upside with options.
Apple (AAPL) was trading around $325 early this week, almost exactly halfway between those two levels. That sets up a strategy known as a collar.
A collar isn't a standalone options bet. The investor must own 100 Apple shares — either already held or bought outright — and then layer the options on top. In this case, that means buying one Sept. 18 $310 put and selling one Sept. 18 $340 call.
With Apple at $324.77 when the trade was priced, the $310 put cost about $2.17 per share, or $217 for one contract. The $340 call brought in about $2.12 per share, or $212.

It wasn't as smooth sailing as they maybe would have liked, but in the end, Provo got the win over Mountain View in four sets 25-17, 25-26, 26-28, and 25-19 Tuesday night.
Provo has made easy work of its opponents so far this season coming into its game against Mountain View. Prior to this matchup, Provo had yet to drop a single set, and it looked like the Bulldogs were on their way once again to a quick, sweeping victory.
Looking in complete control after the first two sets, Provo showed some vulnerability in the 3rd set, giving Mountain View a window of hope that it took advantage of.
Provo bounced back quite nicely after dropping its first set of season and had no problem seeing the match out.
"They were calm and composed in the 4th and did a really good job. We have really good leadership on our team. A lot of really good seniors, and so, yeah, we just need to take care of business on our side," said Provo head coach Stefanie Magalei.
