What's going on on the island? After Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, two of the favorites, already took a fully deserved beating, the next underdog is frustrating the supposedly stronger team on paper.
And "frustrating" is really an understatement. Brighton & Hove Albion were already 4-0 up after just 30 minutes against the reigning Europa League winners and last season's fourth-placed side, Aston Villa.
Fabian Hürzeler's Seagulls were ruthless. After an early own goal by Lindelöf, De Cuyper added another in the 18th minute. Homegrown talent Hinshelwood then piled on two more with a quickfire brace after half an hour.
As if that wasn't already bitter enough, the team from Birmingham then reduced themselves to ten men. João Gomes was shown a red card for violent conduct.
After Unai Emery's side recently put in a good showing against PSG in the Super Cup, this is a massive blow to start the season. Perhaps the departures of three key starters — Youri Tielemans (move to Man United), Lucas Digne (move to PSG), and Morgan Rogers (move to Chelsea) — will be felt more than initially thought after all.

Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam etched his name in the record books on the second day of the second Test against Australia in Mackay, becoming the first bowler from his country to claim a seven-wicket haul against Australia. He also became the first Bangladesh bowler to take seven wickets in a Test innings, with his sensational figures of 7/48 now the best-ever by a Bangladesh pacer in Tests.
Shoriful produced a sensational spell of 7/48 in 15 overs to overshadow Mitchell Starc's six-wicket haul and keep Bangladesh alive in a Test that appeared to be slipping away after they were bowled out for just 64.
The left-arm pacer also registered the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler away from home in Tests, surpassing Taijul Islam's 7/138 against Zimbabwe in Harare earlier this year.
Australia began their innings at 41/3 but recovered through a 77-run partnership between Steve Smith and Cameron Green. Smith made 42 off 74 ***** , including six fours, while Green continued the repair work with a fluent 67 off 105 ***** , hitting 10 boundaries.
Shoriful, however, kept Bangladesh in the contest with his pace, movement and bounce. He eventually reduced Australia to 148/8 before the hosts' lower order mounted another resistance.
Green and Nathan Lyon added 38 runs before Shoriful ended Green's resistance with a pinpoint yorker to complete his magnificent seven-wicket haul. Lyon then remained unbeaten on 32 off 62 ***** , including four boundaries and a six, and helped Australia reach 210.
Lyon and Josh Hazlewood added another 24 runs for the final wicket, frustrating Bangladesh before Taijul Islam dismissed Hazlewood to end the innings.
Australia's total gave them a commanding 146-run first-innings lead.
Shoriful's achievement came only one Test after Hasan Mahmud had set a new Bangladesh record against Australia with 6/55 in Darwin. Hasan's nine wickets in that match helped Bangladesh secure their first-ever Test victory in Australia.
Earlier, Australia had won the toss and opted to field, with Starc responding to Bangladesh's first-Test victory in emphatic fashion.
The left-arm quick tore through the Bangladesh batting lineup with astonishing figures of 6/12, while Pat ***** mins claimed three wickets as the visitors were dismissed for just 64. Shoriful was Bangladesh's top scorer with 14.
Bangladesh began their second innings under pressure and reached 39/3 by the end of the first session. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was unbeaten on 23, with Mushfiqur Rahim on four.
Starc had already taken two wickets, while ***** mins added one as Bangladesh trailed by 107 runs.
Despite Shoriful's historic spell, Australia remain firmly in control and Bangladesh face a daunting task to avoid conceding the series-levelling Test.

It's been a long, hot under-the-collar summer for Detroit Red Wings prospect Eddie Genborg.
"It's been tough and really boring," Genborg told Swedish website Expressen.
An undisclosed injury that Genborg suffered last spring in his AHL Calder Cup playoff debut with the Grand Rapids Griffins is still keeping him out of action. As training camp nears, Genborg is left stewing in uncertainty.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a crushing defeat in their opening Premier League game against Brentford following a despicable performance.
Spurs were thoroughly swept aside by their city counterparts, and alarm bells will be ringing that this could be another difficult campaign ahead.
Several Tottenham players played below par. Lucas Bergvall was hooked following a first-half horror show while captain Archie Gray never looked comfortable at the back.
However, the more frustrating performance of the day came from £100 million signing Sandro Tonali, who never quite managed to give Spurs a hold in the game.
The Italian international star was 'utterly outshone and overpowered by Brentford's record buy Mamadou Sangare.'

All summer, the future of Claudio Echeverri appeared uncertain. The Argentinian playmaker endured a frustrating 2025-26 season. He went against Manchester City's advice to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the first half of last season. That move didn't pan out as Echeverri couldn't force his way into the Leverkusen lineup. He returned to City last January before being sent out on loan to Girona. Manchester City wanted Echeverri to spend last season at Girona. He showed flashes of quality while being used primarily as an impact substitute. Echeverri was a part of Manchester City's preseason tour of Asia where he showed brief glimpses of his talent.
Where Echeverri would play his football during the 2026-27 season hasn't been clear. Perhaps, until now. A new report indicates that Echeverri is set to stay at Manchester City for at least the first half of the 2026-27 season. Echeverri does have attributes that could be useful for Enzo Maresca's side, so it may be a wise move to keep him at City for the time being.
Soy del Millo has reported that Enzo Maresca reportedly wants to give Claudio Echeverri minutes at Manchester City this season. Therefore, Maresca has decided that the young Argentinian excitement machine will not be sent out on loan. As per the Spy del Millo report Enzo Maresca wanted to ***** s Echeverri as a player during Manchester City's preseason. Based on Maresca's ***** sment, Echeverri is set to stay at Manchester City where his progress will be closely monitored.
Typically, Claudio Echeverri operates as a number ten or as an attacking midfielder. Echeverri's clear strength is his ability to drive at defenders with his electrifying pace and mesmerizing dribbling ability. Claudio Echeverri can also pick out a defence splitting pass and he can create opportunities to score for himself and his teammates. Those attributes could be useful to Enzo Maresca's side. Echeverri's strongest attributes could also see him also play on either wing when required.
If, as reported, Claudio Echeverri remains at Manchester City for next season, it wouldn't be expected that he would be a starter. However, as a squad player, he could fulfil a role. Playing as an impact substitute against tired opponents could be in Echeverri's wheelhouse. His pace and ability to make something out of nothing could be useful for Enzo Maresca. That could be his role today as Manchester City take on Bournemouth given that City are short of options on the bench as they await to complete Enzo Maresca's squad in the transfer market.

The Detroit Tigers spent the trade deadline loading up on young pitching.
Less than three weeks later, a frustrating pattern has developed.
Right-hander Brady Smith, one of the three prospects Detroit acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tarik Skubal, was placed on the seven-day injured list by High-A West Michigan on Thursday. Minor League Baseball's official transaction log confirmed the move after Smith left his Aug. 15 start with an apparent issue involving his throwing arm.
The Tigers have not announced the specific nature or severity of Smith's injury.
That distinction matters. An IL placement is concerning. It is not an invitation to diagnose an arm injury from the couch.

A common theme is developing in the WNBA, with more and more coaches becoming fed up of the outside noise.
The Dallas Wings pulled off a close victory over the Indiana Fever, led by an explosive season-high 32 points from Arike Ogunbowale and a career-best 26 points from Jessica Shepard. Dallas shot an impressive 59% from the field despite a 20-point effort from Kelsey Mitchell.
You'd think the postgame talk would be all about the basketball, but instead it was all still focused on the transgender situation in the WNBA.
While it needs to be addressed, it's frustrating to watch genuine achievements get completely eclipsed by non-basketball culture wars when the focus should strictly be on the talent.
And that's a common reaction amongst those in the thick of it in the WNBA.

This should be a crucial moment in the career of Harry Brook.
After the thrilling highs and frustrating lows of the past four years and 38 Tests, he stroked 91 runs from 93 **** without breaking sweat on day two of the first Test against Pakistan.
The wild swipes of previous innings, particularly during England's Ashes defeat last winter, were gone. Not once did he come charging down the pitch.
Yes, he was dropped on one but after that he just kept his concentration and knocked bad **** for four.
He will score a million runs if he keeps batting like this. It must be the blueprint for Brook across the rest of his Test career.

Madison Investments, an investment advisor, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Madison Large Cap Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the second quarter, U.S. stock market indices achieved their best performance since 2020, driven largely by a narrow group of Artificial Intelligence-related stocks. As in the pandemic's early days, investors are fixated on who will benefit from AI, reminiscent of the late 1990s internet bubble. Against this backdrop, The Madison Large Cap Fund (class I) returned 8.4% in the second quarter of 2026, compared to a 15.2% increase in the S&P 500 Index. The current market's extreme narrowness is concerning, and history suggests this won't persist. While AI is reshaping society and the economy, today's winners may not remain so, and booms could lead to busts. Additionally, factors such as a volatile federal administration, growing budget deficits, inflation, high interest rates, and strained consumer finances will significantly impact the economy and stock market in the future. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Madison Large Cap Fund highlighted Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT). Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) is an online auction and vehicle remarketing services company. On August 19, 2026, Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) closed at $33.85 per share. One-month return of Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) was 24.10%, and its shares lost 29.21% over the past 52 weeks. Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) has a market capitalization of $31.26 billion.
Madison Large Cap Fund stated the following regarding Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Volume growth at Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT), which manages salvage vehicle auctions, continues to be weak due to more under-and-uninsured auto drivers and shifting market share amongst insurance carriers. While recent performance has been frustrating, Copart's earnings have grown at a healthy clip over the past few years, and its competitive position remains strong. The company also announced that Executive Chairman Jay Adair, who previously served as CEO for many years, will return to the role. We view this as a positive development. Jay was instrumental in building Copart over the past 30+ years, and his substantial ownership stake keeps him strongly aligned with shareholders."
Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) is not on our list of 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds Heading Into 2026. According to our database, 57 hedge fund portfolios held Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) at the end of the first quarter, compared to 68 in the previous quarter. In Q3 FY 2026, Copart, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:CPRT) consolidated revenue grew to $1.24 billion, up 2.1% from last year fueled by robust service and purchase vehicle sales. While we acknowledge the potential of Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less do

The Minnesota Vikings hosted the Baltimore Ravens at TCO Performance Center in Eagan, MN, on Wednesday for their first of two joint practices. Fans couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day in the middle of August. Unfortunately, the on-field product didn't reflect the picture-perfect backdrop.
Both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy struggled throughout the day. The Ravens defense was blanketing receivers, testing the likes of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison with physicality before, during, and after the pass. It was a frustrating day for the passing game, providing little clarity of what this offense can look like with Murray under center.
But that was just one phase of practice. The Vikings defense flexed its own muscles, with Brian Flores capping practice in his truest form. It reminded everyone that this team will have a chance as long as Flores is coordinating the defense. If the Vikings' offense can keep up, opponents will be in trouble.
Here are the three main takeaways from Wednesday's practice. The Ravens return for the second day of joint practices on Thursday.
Murray and McCarthy were the only Vikings quarterbacks to take snaps during 7-on-7 and team drills, and neither looked sharp. Passes sailed over receivers' heads. They were underthrown. There were several batted passes. Yet it was hard to pin all the blame on Minnesota's signal-callers.

Darius Garland, the Los Angeles Clippers point guard now half a year removed from the midseason trade that ended his seven-plus years in Cleveland, spoke to HoopsHype exclusively at New Balance's 2026 Beantown Elite Experience, his second time working the camp. Garland discussed the toe injury that quietly derailed his season, what Tyronn Lue's vision for him looks like and more.
Darius Garland: It's like a revamp, really. Coming to a bigger city, a bigger market. It's a lot of weight on your shoulders, like really running a team in Los Angeles. It's a great challenge, great responsibility as well. So I'm super happy just to take that on. Got a little snippet of it last year, but to have a full year under my belt, having a training camp, having some time with T-Lue, I'm super excited about this year.
DG: It's super cool, because I've actually watched him in 2016. I told him I wanted to play a little bit like Kai [Kyrie Irving] and how he played in 2016 in that Finals run. So actually seeing his vision actually work, so trying to implement it into my game, I think it would be pretty cool. It's going to be pretty interesting how he tries to fit it in. But I'm super excited. We've been talking a lot about the offense this year. I'm super excited to get back over there in LA and just be with the team and be with the guys.
DG: I didn't really realize it until it happened as well. So I thought it was just a toe injury. It started off as like a bone bruise at first, like, just kept stubbing my toe in the front of my shoe. And then me thinking it's just a toe, I could just play on it. It just got worse. So I had like some torn ligaments and stuff like that. So I just had to get that reconstructed. But I'm all good now.
It was very frustrating, just because the season I had before, it was really, really good. So I think we could have had a chance of making a run if I didn't get hurt. So that was pretty frustrating. But it's pretty tough just out there playing with nine toes for like half a year. But it's all good, though, because the second half of the year, I had all 10 toes. And I felt really good. I felt like I was getting back to normal. But now, having a full summer, having a full offseason back to 100 percent. It was a mental fog most of the time. Because we're using our toes 24/7. So just out there trying to run on it and play defense, slide, and everything like that. It was pretty tough. Just had to work through it. I get paid to do this stuff. I just wanted to put on my hard hat and go out there and work and do the best I could.

We asked for your views about Ezri Konsa's probable exit from Aston Villa to join Premier League champions ******* nal.
Here are some of your comments:
Steve: Well, we hoped it wouldn't happen, but I guess all of us expected it. Sad and frustrating, but let's not forget what he has done for us since joining, so thank you and good luck.
Luke: If you asked all the players that left, I don't think they left because of the culture or the manager but because of the financial restrictions of PSR and how that keeps Villa back. Not angry with the player or with ******* nal. They strengthen again, which is their right.

Cameron Carter-Vickers yesterday pledged his long term future to Celtic which is a boost after losing Arne Engels last week and only retaining the services of Alistair Johnston due to another injury picked up at Rugby Park ahead of his proposed move to Everton going through.
The Canadian right-back's injury record is becoming something of a concern and may well make future suitors think twice but that is a story for another day.
CCV spoke to the media yesterday afternoon ahead of this evening's hugely important first leg in the Champions League playoff against Austrian Champions LASK at Celtic Park. The American damaged his achilles in a Europa League match at Paradise last October against Sturm Graz and that ended his season, so he spent most of his time on the treatment table with AJ.
That frustrating period on the sidelines has resulted in Carter-Vickers taking stock and realising that he is perfectly content playing his football in a Celtic jersey.

Red Sox Offense Sends Loud Message With Another Fenway Outburst originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox offense suddenly looks dangerous again. One night after pounding out 16 hits in an 11-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston followed with 13 more hits in a 9-4 win Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox have scored 20 runs on 29 hits through the first two games of the series. Eight different Boston hitters recorded at least one hit Tuesday, while Adley Rutschman and Mickey Gasper supplied the power.
For a lineup that recently endured another frustrating disappearance, the two-game eruption could not have come at a better time. Boston has won three of its last four games, improving to 68-58 and remaining firmly involved in the American League playoff race.
Boston immediately applied pressure against Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. Ceddanne Rafaela and Nick Sogard opened the bottom of the first inning with consecutive singles before Wilyer Abreu drew a walk to load the bases.

Joshua Kimmich will not play for Bayern Munich in its friendly against Heidenheim after appearing to experience discomfort in his adductor area during training.
According to Bild (as captured by iMiaSanMia), Kimmich was at Säbener Straße and trained in a group alongside Lennart Karl, Konrad Laimer, João Palhinha, and Manuel Neuer. The Bayern ******* istant captain completed sprint exercises at "varying speeds", but reportedly grabbed his adductors during the session.
Later, Bayern Munich formally announced that Kimmich is out. In addition, Tom Bischof and Manuel Neuer are also not available due to their "heavy workload in preseason."
The timing will be worth monitoring. A minor muscular issue would be particularly frustrating for Kimmich as Bayern continue to build toward the start of the campaign, but the club has little reason to take unnecessary risks in a friendly.
Bayern will surely hope this is nothing more than a precaution and that Kimmich is back to full fitness soon.

I'd say "stop me if you heard this one before," but you can't stop me, because I have a recap to write. The Braves fell behind early, and didn't hit any homers, losing a close-ish game on the margins to the Twins. When you don't hit homers, you need BABIP, and when you don't get BABIP, chances are you're going to lose. That's pretty much what happened on Monday night at Target Field.
This game was a weird one in many ways. After a 45-minute rain delay, the Braves grinded Bailey Ober for 26 pitches, but ultimately came up short. Both Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris II singled, but Mauricio Dubon fouled out weakly to right on the eighth pitch he saw from Ober. Then, the Twins pulled off some high-wire only-in-baseball garbage, aided by Martin Perez' inability to keep the ball in the zone. Look, I'll just post the snip from the Baseball Savant gamefeed:
Basically, a soft double, two walks, a bloop double that basically kissed the chalk that no one was able to run down, a very soft bloop, and then a perfectly-placed slow roller. Put that together, and it's four runs. Yeah, Perez shouldn't be walking two guys in an inning if he's not going to strike anyone out, but… help us out a bit, BABIP gods, eh?
They would not. The funny thing is, the Twins didn't manage to get much of anything going the rest of the way, but neither did the Braves. Perez basically cruised until the fourth, when the Twins managed two hard liners, but Ryan Jeffers had a weak flyout to strand them. Perez completed five innings with a 3/2 K/BB ratio — no walks after those two to the second and third batters he faced. Victor Mederos had a 1-2-3 sixth, and then Tyler Kinley came on (white flag?), hit a batter, walked another, and gave way to Ray Kerr, making his first MLB appearance since June 15, 2024. Kerr threw literally one pitch, a down-the-middle sinker to Kody Clemens, which turned into a groundout. For the eighth, the Braves left Kerr in the game, and somehow, the Twins loaded the bases with none out again (somehow equals a hit-by-pitch, a single, and a bunt that Kerr threw too high for Ozzie Albies to flag down at first and still touch the base). But, despite me looking very askance at the Braves for deciding to throw Kerr in for an up-down in a close game while still recovering from Tommy John Surgery, he somehow got out of it with no runs scoring, thanks to two pop-outs and a groundout.
That was the pitching slate for Atlanta; the hitting slate was a lot more frustrating. The Braves made Ober throw a ton of pitches, a la the first inning, but to little avail the first two times through the order. After that first inning, they got a leadoff single in the second and a two-out walk in the third, but didn't do anything with either. They finally broke through in the fifth: Austin Riley singled to start the frame, and Drake Baldwin pulled a double down the right-field line. Ronald Acuña Jr. got a fastball down the pipe on 2-1 at a sad 85.6 mph and yanked it down the left-fiel

The WNBA continues to receive backlash for different issues surrounding it. ******* ysts, sports commentators and fans have criticized it for how it has been dealing with controversial matters. Prominent sports anchor Elle Duncan is the latest to blast the the league.
She did not hold back with her ******* sment of the WNBA's state. Duncan recalled how promising the league was before reaching what she believes is its low point.

"I remember how much passion, energy and excitement there was for the attention that these women were finally getting, and the ratings, and this new crop of superstars that were going to come into the league and help elevate this game even more," Duncan said. "And it would finally be all these women reaping everything that they had sewn all these years.
"And very quickly over the course of the last three years, it's just turned into a sticking point for sides to continue to politicize things that shouldn't be, to be as divisive as possible. Right now, the WNBA is the most toxic ******* e to cover, and that's incredibly frustrating and sad."

The hits New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart took as a rookie might still be haunting him, but not necessarily because any physical effects have lingered.
After Dart's latest trip to the blue medical tent for a sideline evaluation on Saturday, Aug. 15, he said he was "puzzled" by how frequently he ends up there. Head coach John Harbaugh told reporters in a virtual press conference on Aug. 16 that he believes Dart's "history" of concussion checks is the reason he ends up in the medical tent so often.
"I'm sure it's frustrating," Harbaugh said. "I guess he maybe got the wind knocked out of him a little bit, but I'm not going to be critical of the league or whoever's doing that upstairs. They do their job and they want to protect the players.
"I'm sure history or whatever they might remember, maybe that comes into play. I don't know if there is a similar situation, another quarterback would have been called in the tent or not. There's no way for us to know that. So, nothing we can worry about."
Dart was flagged five times for medical evaluations in his rookie season last year. He was diagnosed with a concussion in a Week 10 game against the Chicago Bears and ended up missing two games.

Derby County do not have the best opening day record, with their last win coming in July 2022, when they secured a 1-0 victory at home to Oxford United in League One.
It felt as though they were on course to break that curse after 45 minutes at The Valley on Saturday, as they took a 1-0 lead into the interval courtesy of a well-worked breakaway and a composed finish from Sam Szmodics.
However, despite Derby's lively start, history did in fact repeat itself. A second-half turnaround from Charlton Athletic saw the Rams fall to a 2-1 defeat, and yet another opening day loss.
Dropping points from a winning position was perhaps the most frustrating part of the result, something they were found guilty of far too often last season. Frustrations also came from some questionable substitutions, with a feeling John Eustace left it too long to make his attacking changes, only doing so once the damage had been done.

The Chicago Bears had some issues with pre-snap penalties throughout last season, which was especially evident at this point last year and carried over into the regular season.
There have been notably less pre-snap issues this summer compared to last year in the first season in head coach Ben Johnson's complex offense. And those issues were not apparent in Chicago's 34-10 preseason win against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.
Johnson sounded off on what still needs to be cleaned up on offense, but he noted that those pre-snap procedure issues aren't among the biggest concerns heading into the 2026 season.
"My concerns last year were a lot with the pre-snap. We don't have those procedure issues to that degree anymore," Johnson said. "So, provided we can keep those to a minimum, I think that's where we'll continue to get better. I think our defense is going to continue to get better because they're facing a clean unit as well. We'll see what it looks like going against a couple of new opponents. I'm excited to go down to Cincinnati, and they've got a lot of new talent on defense that we're going to have to be on our Ps and Qs if we want to have success against. That to me is going to help us really shape where we're at as an offense right now."
Against the Browns, Chicago only had two penalties for 10 yards. One of those penalties was a false start right after a timeout, which will be frustrating to Johnson. The Cincinnati Bengals will be a good test for the Bears in next week's preseason game with all the talent they have on defense to see if Chicago's offense can minimize their pre-snap issues like they did against the Browns.

Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart said he was "puzzled" by having to go into the sideline medical tent after taking a big hit during Saturday's preseason game against the Vikings because he feels like it happens to him more frequently than other quarterbacks.
Dart made five trips to the tent during his rookie season and missed two games with a concussion, which sparked a lot of conversation about Dart's need to protect himself while running the football. Saturday's check came after he took a hit while taking a sack, but head coach John Harbaugh said on Sunday that he thinks Dart's full body of work played a role in the most recent trip.
"I'm sure it's frustrating," Harbaugh said, via a transcript from the team. "I guess he maybe got the wind knocked out of him a little bit, but I'm not going to be critical of the league or whoever's doing that upstairs. They do their job and they want to protect the players. I'm sure history or whatever they might remember, maybe that comes into play. Harbaugh then pivoted back to his initial response. On Saturday, Harbaugh said the team needs to block better and he was critical of the protection again.
"There's no way he should have been hit there," Harbaugh said. "I mean, it just shouldn't have happened. That was a basic protection. Should have been protected and we expect in that situation to be protected in the future. I mean, it's not like he's going to be never hit, never tackled, never sacked. But it shouldn't have been in that one, and it shouldn't have been that easy to get to him."

Manchester City are blessed to have two elite options to play in the number ten role in their squad. Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki are excellent in the role and both figure to play prominent roles for Enzo Maresca throughout the 2026-27 season. Phil Foden started in the role across Manchester City's three preseason friendlies. He started again yesterday as City suffered a 3-0 defeat to ***** nal in the FA Community Shield. Cherki replaced him on the hour-mark. Phil Foden has a full preseason behind him, while Rayan Cherki only returned to City last Wednesday after his World Cup duties with France. Looking at who should start in the number ten role for Enzo Maresca's side, Rayan Cherki should be the favourite.
Earlier this summer, Phil Foden signed a contract extension with Manchester City. It is clear that City have full faith in the England international. Foden remains an important player for his team. He has gotten to work after a difficult 2024-25 season and seen a drop off last season after he began the 2025-26 season brightly. After missing out on selection in England's World Cup squad, Phil Foden should benefit from a full preseason working with Enzo Maresca and his teammates.
However, Foden's form over the three friendlies Manchester City have played and in yesterday's FA Community Shield fixture against ***** nal has been patchy. There have been flashes of quality shown by Foden. On other occasions he looks like a player still battling to return to his best. That is to be expected given how far back Phil Foden is coming back from in terms of his form.
If you were looking at who is more likely to start in the number ten role next weekend against Bournemouth in Manchester City's opening Premier League fixture and to begin the 2026-27 season, perhaps Phil Foden is the favourite. However, he does face stiff competition for that role from Rayan Cherki.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup was a frustrating experience for Rayan Cherki. He spent the majority of the tournament on the periphery of the French squad due to the vast array of attacking talent at Didier Deschamps' disposal. That disappointment could fuel Cherki to take his game to another level to avoid such disappointment in the future.

Skip Bayless' blunt Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese take proved timely after Fever-Dream thriller originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Skip Bayless identified the defining strength and most frustrating weakness of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Sunday's game between the Indiana Fever and Atlanta Dream then provided evidence for nearly every part of his argument.
Before Indiana's 95-91 overtime victory, Bayless declared Clark the greatest passer in WNBA history. He also acknowledged the risk that accompanies her ambitious approach.
"Caitlin Clark is by far the W's best passer – best ever in the W," Bayless wrote on X. "Every game 3-4 of her passes are so stunning teammates aren't ready, can't convert."
Bayless noted that Clark's high-risk passes also contribute to her league-leading turnover total. That criticism is fair, but it cannot be separated from the creativity that makes her so dangerous. Clark regularly attempts passes most players would not even consider. Some become spectacular **** ists. Others sail out of bounds, get intercepted or surprise teammates who are not prepared for the ball.

Red Sox End Difficult Road Trip With Rain-Soaked Loss to Pirates originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox's difficult road trip ended with a long wait and another frustrating loss. Boston fell behind early, watched its only real comeback attempt disappear into an extended weather delay and ultimately suffered an 8-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday at PNC Park.
The defeat dropped the Red Sox to 66-58 and handed Pittsburgh a series victory. Boston went 1-2 against a Pirates team that entered Sunday below .500, an especially disappointing result as the Red Sox continue fighting for postseason positioning. Patrick Sandoval gave Boston little chance to settle into the game. The left-hander surrendered seven earned runs over four innings, putting an already inconsistent offense in a massive early hole.
The Red Sox then waited through a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay before quietly completing a loss that felt decided long before the tarp covered the field.
Sandoval's afternoon began poorly and never recovered. Bryan Reynolds gave Pittsburgh the lead with an RBI double in the first inning before Brandon Lowe followed with a run-scoring single. The Pirates then broke the game open during a five-run third inning.

Finally, Scottie Scheffler has won on the PGA Tour again.
The top-ranked golfer in the world, after months of finishing short in frustrating fashion, ran away with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He posted a 4-under 66 in the final round at TPC Southwind in Memphis and ended up taking a massive eight-shot win over the rest of the field to kick off the PGA Tour's postseason. It's his first win since claiming victory at The American Express in January.
The win also earned him a $3.6 million check.
Scheffler entered the week with five runner-up finishes under his belt this season, two of which were losses in playoff holes. Though the 11 top-10 finishes he had racked up are hard to be disappointed about, Scheffler was getting close to completing a one-win season for the first time in years.
But quickly, Scheffler got back to old form and absolutely dominated the field in Memphis. By the time he reached the final stretch, after a birdie at the 13th, Scheffler's lead was up to seven shots. The tournament was over early, and he was back to winning without any doubt whatsoever.

Louis Foster chances for his first IndyCar Series win came to an abrupt end near the halfway point of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham.
After starting on pole, the 23-year-old Briton was out front and in control of the 90-lap race. An untimely caution during the pit cycle caught Foster before he had stopped, while several rivals had already pitted, dropping him down the order after he came in from the lead on lap 33.
Two further cautions over the next seven laps set up a charge from Foster on the lap-40 restart. He propelled by the likes of reigning and four-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou, Will Power, and Graham Rahal, among others, to move from eighth to fourth.
Summing up his run at the front of the field for IndyCar's first race in Markham, Foster spoke to the fine margins at this track and reiterated Mick Schumacher's concern about the concrete walls themselves.
"I'll survive," Foster said. "I'll be all right. Yeah, just frustrating. It was so fast. But yeah, I went for a move on Marcus and thought I left enough room to the wall. I mean, I got halfway around it almost, but because we don't have these radius walls here, we just catch the edges.

Not everything went well for the Washington Commanders on Friday night.
Yes, the Commanders defeated the Dolphins 20-7 at Northwest Stadium. Yes, the Commanders were clearly the better team on the field during quarters two, three, and four. However, that first quarter wasn't a thing of beauty. That first quarter actually raised some eyebrows and questions for Commanders fans.
Good grief, the Dolphins put themselves in a hole to start the game when they held on the opening kickoff, so their possession began at their own seven-yard line. The Dolphins then drove 93 yards in 14 plays and seven minutes, putting the ball in the end zone. What was frustrating about the drive was that the Commanders had some players out there, like Johnny Newton, who weren't doing their jobs effectively.
Newton was drafted with the No. 36 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he really needs to step it up and justify his being selected as high as he was. The Dolphins, meanwhile, appeared to really push around Newton and the defensive linemen as a whole on that initial drive. On the drive, the Dolphins had runs of 5, 14, 5, 6, 7, 6, 3, 1, and 1 yard (touchdown).
Daron Payne is another defensive tackle who hasn't exactly set the NFL world on fire since the 2022 season. Payne is in the final year of his lucrative contract, and with Newton being as disappointing as he has been, Commanders GM Adam Peters may want to really overhaul the position next offseason.

The Boston Red Sox may have suffered a significant blow to their lineup Saturday after Masataka Yoshida exited the game with a left hamstring injury. The Red Sox will likely be making some changes to the MLB roster in the coming days.
Yoshida appeared to hurt himself while running to second base on a double in the third inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He immediately showed a noticeable limp and was removed from the game, with the Red Sox announcing that he was dealing with left hamstring tightness.

The timing of the injury is particularly frustrating because Yoshida has been one of Boston's more productive hitters recently.

PHOENIX — Colorado Rockies rookie third baseman Kyle Karros, struggling early in the season, sat slumped in front of his locker, his mind soul filled with self-doubt, wondering if he even belonged in the big leagues.
"I remember sitting alone," Karros said, "and I was like, "It's just so frustrating. I know I can play here. I know I'm capable. I just haven't seen any results at this level.'
Rockies teammate Mickey Moniak walked over, put his arm on Karros' shoulder, and Karros innocently asked him if he ever felt that way.
"He's like, 'Dude, you know who you're talking to?'" Karros said.
You want to hear about self-doubt? Pain and embarrassment? Failure.

Coach Dorival Júnior spoke at a press conference after the 1-1 draw with Coritiba at MorumBIS in São Paulo (SP), in a match valid for the 23rd round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship.
"It's frustrating because, from one play, we ended up losing the chance for a win. And this is something that has been happening repeatedly in several matches. It's what we've been focusing on and working on the most, but set pieces have been taking away a real chance for us to be in a much better position in the league," the coach said.
"We owe our fans because of what we tried to do in the first half, playing practically the entire time in the opponent's half. But, once again, we lacked the most important thing, which is making the decisive play and finishing the job," he added.
Dorival also commented on the fans' presence at the stadium.
"The fans did their part, and they did it very well. Once again, we fell short. The responsibility is ours. Today our goalkeeper practically didn't have to make a save, so we had the obligation to try something different so that we could end the match with a win," he concluded.
