The Los Angeles Rams are trying to sort out their quarterback room for the 2026 season. Matthew Stafford is returning as their starter, but it's unclear who will back him up after Jimmy Garoppolo opted not to return. Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson are competing for the QB2 job, and it might be a closer battle than anticipated.
Bennett has had the lead all year, but following Simpson's strong debut in the preseason, he's making things interesting. Simpson is obviously guaranteed a roster spot as a first-round rookie, but the problem is, he may not be ready to back up Stafford, and Bennett may be too good to cut.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network told Rich Eisen that he thinks the Rams will keep three quarterbacks, in part because he doesn't think Bennett will clear waivers if he's cut. He believes another team would claim Bennett, causing the Rams to lose him.
"To me, Stetson Bennett, I've seen him do this stuff that he's done in the preseason, I've seen Stetson Bennett do that live in person several times," he said. "I think Stetson Bennett understands this thing. He can get you through a stretch of games if you needed to. I would be of the idea of, 'Let's keep three and go that route,' but hey, maybe they want to save a roster spot and see if they can get Stetson Bennett down. I don't know that they'd be able to get him down to the practice squad without him getting claimed. I would lean towards three. I know a lot of teams don't want to do that, but where they are right now – if they end up making Ty the No. 2 with their expectations for this season going into the fall, that'll tell you that he's way ahead of schedule, in my opinion."
Bennett played well last preseason and looked comfortable in the first game against the Chiefs, but Simpson is already impressing in practice and the preseason, too. If the team is confident in Simpson being one injury away from starting games, he could get the nod.

Title holders Bayern Munich started the new season of the women's Bundesliga with a 4-1 victory at Union Berlin on Friday evening.
Klara Bühl's free-kick gave the Bavarians the lead in the 27th minute as they headed to the break with a narrow lead.
But Pernille Harder needed only two minutes after half-time to add a second for the defending champions.
Captain Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir added one to her name in the 60th, before Union Berlin pulled one back through Nele Bauereisen in the 79th.
But the guests didn't panic and Sophie Proost scored her first goal for Bayern to seal the win in stoppage time.

During an "Overreaction Monday" segment on "The Rich Eisen Show," Eisen pushed back against the notion that Rodgers should be on a short leash at age 42 if his play declines or if the rookies appear ready.

The College Football Playoff appears to be heading for another big change. After expanding from four to 12 teams in the playoff field, it could be expanding again to allow more teams to join the party.
Although the Oregon Ducks have cracked the playoff field the past two seasons, adding more teams to the field means more games in the postseason, putting more barriers in the program's path to a championship. Dan Lanning is certainly hunting a national ******* le for the Ducks, but he is also taking an interest in what is best for the future of the sport.
In an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Lanning backed the idea of playoff expansion because of the financial benefits teams and conferences could receive from television revenue, which largely flows down from the massive television contracts the College Football Playoff has with networks like ESPN.
"I'm great with four, I'm great with 12, but ideally, if we're talking about it's a TV problem, you have to generate more revenue," Lanning said. "So if you have to generate more revenue, what does that mean? It means add more teams. We've been in the playoff the last two years. It doesn't necessarily make sense for Oregon to add more playoff teams, because we've put ourselves in that position the last few years.
"But I do think it makes sense for college football," Lanning continued. "You're going to have more fans engaged, you're going to have less guys sitting out of bowl games, you're going to have less people battling with the portal."

NEW YORK — Butch Huskey, who was the penultimate Mets player to wear the No. 42, has died at age 54, the club announced on Friday on social media.
"We are saddened to learn about the passing of former Met Butch Huskey," the Mets said in a statement.
A cause of death has not been announced.
Huskey, who wore No. 42 to pay tribute to Jackie Robinson, was drafted by the Mets in the seventh round of the 1989 MLB Draft out of Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma. He made his debut in 1993 before seeing his first major action in 1996 when he slashed .278/.319/.435 with 15 home runs, 60 RBI and 43 runs.
Huskey, who played parts of five seasons with the Mets, logged his most productive campaign one season later in 1997 when he posted an .822 OPS with 24 home runs, 26 doubles, 81 RBI and 61 runs. He spent the majority of his playing career in right field, with spurts at first base and third base.

Most NFL head coaches spend August talking down workloads and hyping committee backfields. The training camp stories are about guys who put on 10 pounds of muscle or are in the best shape of their lives. The coachspeak is always there, and fantasy football managers can't help but roll their eyes with every headline.
However, one first-year NFL coach did the opposite this week. He went live on a national sports talk show and promised to run his best player into the ground, quite literally, and fantasy football managers should be thrilled.
Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley appeared on the Rich Eisen Show and laid out a plan for De'Von Achane that sounds built for fantasy lineups. He said the running back got a warning that morning. "I just gave Achane a heads-up this morning and told him he better be in good shape. Because I told him there might be some games where I might have to pick him up and carry him back into the locker room because he's going to be so tired."
Then Hafley went further, adding that he doesn't want Achane asking for a breather by tapping on his helmet. "And I told him, I don't ever want to see one of these head taps all year. And he looked me right in the eye and said, 'You'll never get that head tap from me.' I said, 'Don't worry, buddy. After you touch the ball 40, 45 times, I might have to pick you up, and I'll carry you back in the locker room.'"
Hafley, who's definitely just having fun in the moment and not talking about a serious strategy, also praised the 24-year-old back as a leader and a smart player. "I love the guy. I mean, you want to talk about a guy with some juice and a guy with personality starting to come out. A guy who's starting to become a leader." He added, "He's one of the smarter players."

During his Pro Bowl campaign last season, Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane maxed out with 28 touches in a Week 10 win over the Buffalo Bills. HAVANA, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Gasoline at $38 a gallon sold from cramped apartments. Diesel hawked on Instagram by a celebrity model to a reggaeton soundtrack. Six decades after Fidel Castro's revolution, all of a sudden, capitalist cracks are appearing in Cuba's communist energy sector.
Under Washington's crippling oil embargo against Cuba, an exception that allows U.S. firms to export fuel to private Cuban businesses has kickstarted a chaotic black market and pried the lid off an energy sector tightly controlled by the state ever since Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House.
Oil shipments from Cuba's traditional suppliers Venezuela and Mexico ended abruptly after the U.S. ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January. U.S. Coast Guard cutters patrol the waters off Cuba, while sanctions and threats have dissuaded tankers from even setting sail.
The embargo has hobbled essential state-run services like the healthcare system, public transport and schools. But under the Commerce Department exception, a trickle of gasoline and diesel is reaching private restaurants, retailers and taxis, the first significant landings of U.S. fuel on the Caribbean island since Castro nationalized refineries after the 1959 revolution.

No NFL player has had 40 touches in a game since Derrick Henry had 41 in a game in 2021. But Dolphins running back De'Von Achane may need to be ready for that kind of workload.
Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley told Rich Eisen that Achane is going to have some games when he'll be such a workhorse that he'll hardly be able to walk back to the locker room when it's over.
"I just gave Achane a heads-up this morning and I told him you better be in good shape," Hafley said. "I told him there might be some games when I have to pick him up and carry him back to the locker room because he's going to be so tired. Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham sees only one way for college football to sustain itself as NIL grows every year. The rise in NIL has fueled conference realignment rumors as everyone seeks individual interests over conference priorities.
In his conversation with ESPN's Rich Eisen on Monday, Whittingham suggested converting college football into a minor league addition to the NFL. This was the Wolverines head coach's response when asked how he would improve the current state of college football, where money disparity has become a major issue:
"I think it's got to be a NFL minor league model where we have a salary cap and the players are employees," Whittingham said. "I think, as distasteful as some of that is, I don't think there's any other way that's better than that. And, right now, it's out of control. We're going to have probably a dozen teams in the next recruiting cycle with $50 million rosters."
With the Big Ten and SEC hosting some of the best teams in college football over the past decade, Whittingham was fueling a "super conference" as an alternative to the current system.
"And there's such a disparity between the haves and the have-nots, I think the only way to get that evened out and level the playing field is to go ahead and pattern it after a minor league NFL model or 'super league' if you will. You'll probably see 48-60 teams survive the cut and be on the right side of the line in the sand and proceed forward," the head coach continued.

"How fast can this kid be good?"
That is the first question Rich Eisen had Wednesday, regarding the 2026 Washington Commanders. The 'kid' to whom Eisen was referring? Sonny Styles.
Yes, the Commanders did draft Styles with the No. 7 overall selection in this year's NFL Draft. Yet, isn't going from college to the NFL a big step? You say, but he was drafted seventh overall. Yes, he was. But wasn't he also playing at Ohio State last year, where their 11 men on defense were noticeably better than their opponents at least 10 out of the 12 games they play each regular season?
Sometimes fans of the NFL completely forget that these rookies coming into the NFL in the high rounds got there, facing a majority of players throughout their college season who are not going to make it into the NFL. For example, only a few games did a stud pass rusher go against an offensive tackle that is going to make it in the NFL.
So, Eisen wants to know how fast Sonny Styles can be good? Well, that is going to depend on some variables. How good are the players going to be in front of Styles on the Commanders' defensive line? We've argued in the past that the NFL should embrace the transparency the UFL brings to officiating. A member of the NFL's Competition Committee believes it will.
"And I think every once in a while the benefit of this other league we have, I think quite honestly it’s been helpful for our league," Broncos coach Sean Payton recently told Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom.com. "Every once in a while you see something you like, and I think Dean Blandino and his crew, when we kick live right to the booth review, I think that’s healthy. And I think you’ll see that in the next two or three years in our league."
As Blandino told Rich Eisen in April, transparency in officiating "eliminates some of the angst and some of maybe the conspiracy theories." Keeping the review process a state secret makes people think the NFL has something to hide — especially when the UFL and a growing number of college conferences have pulled up the shades and thrown the doors open.
In this age of legalized, normalized, and heavily monetized sports betting, it's important not only to get calls right but to create the perception that they're doing everything they can to get calls right.
"I definitely think you’ll see that coming," Payton said. "I think it’s healthy, and it’s certainly comforting for the fan when you can see how they arrive at decisions. And I think it’s fair, especially to the officials and the people doing the review, to see what we arrived at."

Former US Olympian David 'Davey' Hearn has pleaded not guilty to vandalising the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at a court appearance in Washington DC.
Hearn is accused of causing $1,000 (£750) of damages to the pool. He faces a felony charge of destruction of property.
President Donald Trump has blamed vandals for damage to newly applied coating on the bottom of the pool. Hearn was detained last month after touching some of the material, and told BBC News at the time it had already "delaminated".
"If Mr Hearn can be charged with a felony for touching the Reflecting Pool, every American is at risk", said Norm Eisen, one of Hearn's attorneys, speaking outside the courthouse on Thursday.
"It is not a crime to touch the Reflecting Pool, to touch water, in the United States of America," he said.

For lifelong sports fans, walking away from your childhood team can feel almost impossible. But for actor Joe Lo Truglio, famous for his role as Charles Boyle on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the continuous heartbreak of pulling for the New York Jets eventually became too much to bear.
The Brooklyn-born actor ultimately found an unlikely football savior on the West Coast: the Los Angeles Rams.

"I’ve divorced the Jets," Lo Truglio explained. "The Jets are my ex that I can never quit... I’m always going to keep track of my ex. I’m always going to see how she’s looking. But I need to move on to a healthier relationship. And the Rams provide that for me".
Unlike the perennially struggling franchise in New York, Lo Truglio describes his newfound allegiance to Los Angeles as a truly reciprocal partnership where his football needs are finally met: "My complaints are heard. Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack said Tuesday that surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure could add to inflationary pressures and may force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates again if price growth remains elevated.
Speaking to CNBC from the European Central Bank conference in Sintra, Portugal, Hammack said inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target and warned that persistent price pressures tied to AI spending could complicate monetary policy.
"We've got inflation that's too high, and it's been too high for the past five years," Hammack told CNBC's Sara Eisen. "When I look at policy, if that continues, it may mean that we need higher interest rates to bring inflation back down to target".
The Federal Reserve uses interest rates to manage inflation. Higher rates generally slow borrowing and spending, helping cool price growth across the economy.

No team in the NFL has a better chance to win the Super Bowl this season than the Los Angeles Rams. At least, based on the current betting odds. The Rams solidified themselves as the favorites after acquiring Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns, distancing themselves slightly from the rest of the pack – including the defending champion Seattle Seahawks.
They're in a much better position than a team like, say, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but winning with a target on your back like the Rams must do is challenging – especially in the NFL compared to the NBA and other leagues.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was on the "Rich Eisen Show" Wednesday and he thinks it'll be "very hard" for the Rams to go wire-to-wire as pre-season favorites to Super Bowl champions.
"The NFL is awesome. It's so much different than the NBA and the superteams because it is so much about the team," he said. "Yeah, it's about the health, but it's about guys playing together. It's about the schemes and the coaches, so I think it's very hard to be the favorite in pre-season and take that all the way through the season."

“I think Sean Mannion is going to be one of the most interesting new play callers to watch because he’s going to the Eagles team with a ton of talent. He’s going to ask Jalen Hurts to do things that he really hasn’t done in the past. I think he’s going to ask him to throw over the middle a little bit more, play under center more, and that’s going to be one of the most interesting storylines in the league — how he adapts to Mannion’s offense and what kind of offensive coordinator Mannion is going to be in his first year.”

The Miami Dolphins look like a much different team now than they did when they played the final snaps in their 32-30 Week 18 loss to the New York Jets to end their unremarkable 2026 campaign.
Miami has brought in a new general manager and a new head coach who have together made wholesale changes to the roster, which included a swap at quarterback and a controversial trade that sent their top wide receiver to the AFC West for a first-round pick.
While the Dolphins have plenty of doubters right now, NFL ****** yst Rich Eisen seems to believe in what Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley are doing in their first offseason in charge.
"Why am I just thinking that the Dolphins are getting what they're doing right?" Eisen asked on a recent episode of his show. "Everybody thinks that Malik Willis is just a placeholder for whoever comes next... Where did they come from, the folks who are running the Dolphins? You could've sat there two years and said 'Jordan Love is throwing to Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks' and gone yadda yadda yadda down the line there until those guys started balling out, and you're like 'OK, they've got a pretty good receiving corps. there.'"
