Each Sunday, I'll publish my biggest takeaways from the college football weekend. I'll highlight the most interesting storylines, track College Football Playoff contenders and specifically shout out individual and team performances that deserve the spotlight.

And lately, Texas had been overhyped and under-delivering — with three losses to Georgia since joining the SEC, and two losses to Ohio State (in the CFP and last year's season-opener). After starting last year as the preseason No. 1 team, Texas didn't even make the CFP.
But Saturday was different, even after a first half that felt all too familiar. Arch Manning delivered with the game on the line. Hollywood Smothers showed the value of adding the transfer portal's best available running back. And Sarkisian got the kind of win that helps a head coach sleep at night. There may not be moral victories in college football, but there is progress.
Monmouth football went on the road against the momentary darling of the sport and a Mid-American Conference powerhouse. The final score will look predictable on paper. The Hawks lost 49-14 to Western Michigan on Saturday night in Kalamazoo. It was the first game after the Broncos' controversial loss to Michigan had galvanized college football fans across the country in support, and WMU head coach Lance Taylor had foreshadowed the team's response after that painful finish.
"Hey, don't feel sorry for us," Taylor told reporters after the Michigan game. "Feel sorry for the teams that we're going to play."
But don't feel sorry for Monmouth, either. Overall, the Hawks (1-2) put together their best performance of the season as they went toe-to-toe with the Broncos (1-1) in the first half in particular. A much smaller percentage of Monmouth's plays were fatal self-inflicted wounds, and it was enough to obfuscate the team's considerable progress in the third game of the season.
"We did some things well. We moved the ball well, we got stops, but it's putting it all together," Monmouth head coach Jeff Gallo said. "That's a good team, but we're out here trying to compete to win and we can play better. We'll keep pushing to play better."

The Iowa Hawkeyes flipped the script on the Cyclones, winning this year's CyHawk game on a late field goal to pull out a 16-13 win. It was a scrappy, ugly, sometimes dirty game that was pretty much in line to how this series has gone these last ten years. But the offense managed to come to life, thanks to a massive 56-yard bomb to Tony Diaz that set up a Hank Brown touchdown run late the first half. A huge 45-yard Buhr field goal right before halftime reset the score and setting up a grinding second half of football.

Iowa's offense went in to hibernation as they could not get Kamari Moulton going on the ground, the Cyclones were clearly committed to stopping the run and it worked for much of the game.
