ST. LOUIS (AP) — Quinn Mathews took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Alec Burleson had an RBI single to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
Rookie catcher Leo Bernal also singled home a run for the Cardinals. Mathews (2-3) retired his first 10 batters before walking Bryce Eldridge in the fourth and didn't give up a hit until Grant McCray doubled leading off the sixth.
The 25-year-old rookie left-hander struck out eight and allowed a run on four hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings — the longest of his seven major league starts.
Ryne Stanek stranded two in a scoreless eighth and Riley O'Brien retired Christian Koss on a groundout with runners at second and third for his 37th save in 45 opportunities.
Thomas Saggese singled with one out in the fifth off Giants starter Landen Roupp (9-14) and stole second. Iván Herrera walked to chase Roupp, and Burleson singled on the first pitch from Reiver Sanmartin for his 110th RBI and 61st hit with runners in scoring position — both totals top the majors.

The Dallas Cowboys enter the 2026 NFL season as one of the league's most interesting teams. They failed to even make the playoffs last season, but after a great offseason, many have the belief that the team can end their 30-year drought to win the Super Bowl this season.
Last season, the Cowboys' offence was exciting and forced many to believe it was among the best in the league.
This was due to Dak Prescott, George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb leading the way on the offense. However, their defence was equally bad, conceding 30.1 points per game.
Owner Jerry Jones promised to revamp the defence, and as part of that, the likes of Quinnen Williams, Rashan Gary, and Von Miller were brought to the team. They also drafted Ohio State player Caleb Downs, and with these additions, many believed the Cowboys could be contenders.
However, Skip Bayless is not one of them, and he has his reason as to why.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels had a very successful 2024 season that ended in disappointment in Philadelphia.
The Commanders had won two road playoff games, and winning the third consecutive road playoff game was out of the question that day in the NFC Championship Game as the Eagles routed the Commanders 55-23. So one reporter asked Commanders head coach Dan Quinn on Friday about Daniels' hunger to win and what Quinn has observed.
Injured in 2025, Daniels was not able to take the field against the Eagles in either game in 2025. So this is Daniels' first return facing the Eagles since that 2024 NFC ******* le game. "I think it honestly started like towards the end of the season last year," replied Quinn. "That is where it began. But from that point, (there are) new systems and changes which are hard to go through. He's consistently working at it and going after it; it demonstrates readiness. He was more accurate than he's ever been."
Yes, both Quinn and offensive coordinator David Blough have referenced this offseason how Daniels has worked hard to learn and master the new offense. Both have also referred to Daniels' accuracy throughout training camp.
"So, those are the things that I saw. He's always just a confident player, and he's clutch. So, like those things, I wouldn't say they come natural to him, but they are at the forefront. But all the unseen work that went into it- he's gotten stronger, he's gotten bigger." It's no secret the Commanders are concerned with Daniels being injured so often in 2025. They are encouraged that he worked this offseason to get stronger.

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is beloved by his players. Whether it was during his time as a position coach, defensive coordinator, or now in his second tenure as an NFL head coach, Quinn is loved and respected across the NFL.
There's a reason why you hear other prominent players on rival teams express their love and respect for Quinn, such as Micah Parsons. Most recently, Quinn has taken a special interest in Washington's first-round pick, linebacker Sonny Styles. During training camp, Quinn referenced a conversation he had with Styles about making mistakes.
"We're chasing hard to have absolute elite execution," Quinn said last month. "I also recognize there are gonna be mistakes, and I want them to happen when you're working right on the edge of something; you're going to make them. Florida A&M football has been forced to make a quarterback change after starter Isaiah Knowles was ruled out for the season with a thumb injury.
Backup Dustin Fletcher led the Rattler offense on the field for their first possession against the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday, Sept. 10, for a Week 2 "money game" at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Fletcher replaces Knowles, who left Sept. 6's 31-13 Orange Blossom Classic loss against the third quarter after hurting his right throwing hand after taking a hit from a South Carolina State defender. Fletcher subbed in and completed 6-of-8 passes for 68 yards.
And now, he's responsible for operating head coach Quinn Fordham Gray Sr.'s offense against the defending College Football Playoff runners-up and No. 7-ranked team in the USA TODAY top 25.
Fletcher transferred to the Rattlers from The Citadel.

"Selling Sunset" star Christine Quinn's husband, Christian Dumontet, has listed the sprawling Los Angeles home the former couple once shared as their contentious divorce battle continues.
Dumontet filed for divorce from the real estate agent—who is set to make her return to the Netflix reality series—in April 2024, after he was arrested following an alleged domestic violence incident. He was later detained for allegedly violating a temporary restraining order requiring him to stay away from the property.
The tech entrepreneur purchased the home for $5 million in 2019, the same year he and Quinn tied the knot in an extravagant Gothic-themed wedding.

Quinn Hughes says he feels "at peace" amid speculation about his contract with the Wild.
At the NHL's North American Media Tour in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Hughes told the ******* embled press that he "didn't feel backed up against a wall" as the Wild aim to sign him to a long-term extension.
Following last season's playoff exit, Hughes mentioned his openness to re-signing with the organization that gave up a haul to acquire him from Vancouver last December. Tress Way has been an institution in Washington for more than a decade. The Commanders claimed him off waivers back in 2024 and he has been their punter ever since, with a sterling track record that included three Pro Bowl selections.

The 36-year-old told on-site reporters on Thursday afternoon that 2026 may be his final season. While he's old by NFL player standard, Way remains at the top of his game and one of the best punters in the league.

There's been plenty of chatter about the 2026-27 Minnesota Wild. The main offseason rabble has been whether or not Quinn Hughes will sign an extension. Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin was able to weaponize the salary cap **** e since the buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter were greatly reduced. Guerin has been taking care of players like Brock Faber and Kirill Kaprizov.
However, the Hughes question hangs over the franchise's head like a cloud. The Wild rolled the dice to get the high-flying defender from the Vancouver Canucks. However, it would be a disaster if the Olympic Gold Medal winner doesn't stay beyond this season. The Wild have only made the Western Conference Final once in the franchise's history. Minnesota knows the pressure is on to at least get back there.
Guerin fulfulled his promise of making the team into a Stanley Cup contender. He managed to give Kaprizov the deal that would keep the dynamic forward in the fold. However, getting Hughes proved to be a masterstroke. It cemented the Wild as a contender despite being in one of the toughest divisions in hockey.
Minnesota looked the part of a contender by finishing 10th in scoring, fourth in defence, and seventh in points. The Wild even broke some of their bad postseason luck by getting past the Dallas Stars. However, the same old Wild came back in the second round in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Wild were exposed as not having as much depth as the Avs and not having enough team speed. Minnesota has made plenty of progress, but the team still has a long way to go.

Can you believe it? No more mini-camps, no more organized team activities, no more training camp, no more preseason games, no more massive cuts to get down to the 53-man roster. No more signing released players to ****** emble a 16-man practice squad.
Week 1 is on! The Commanders are preparing to face their opening opponent, two-time defending NFC East champion the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were the 2024 NFC and Super Bowl Champions, while Washington lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. The 2025 Eagles won the division, finishing 11-6, followed by Dallas at 7-9-1, Washington at 5-12, and the New York Giants at 4-13.
The Commanders' offense was one of the best in the NFL in 2024, averaging 28.5 points per game. But injuries to receivers, and in particular QB Jayden Daniels, cut offensive production to 20.9 points per game in 2025. OC Kliff Kingsbury and Dan Quinn didn't see eye-to-eye on how the offense would move forward. Consequently, Quinn remains the head coach, and Kingsbury departed and is now on Sean McVay's LA Rams staff.
The Commanders lost tight end Zach Ertz, so they signed free agent TE Chig Okonkwo. GM Adam Peters felt the Commanders really needed help at receiver, so he drafted rookie Antonio Williams 71st overall and then signed veteran free agent receiver Stefon Diggs. Also returning after one season in Jacksonville, is deep threat, Dyami Brown.

Much has been discussed about the future of Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn. After leading the team to its first NFC Championship appearance in decades, the Commanders fell flat in 2025, and many believe that if the Commanders don't perform well in 2026, Quinn will be looking for a new job.
During a recent interview on the Rich Eisen Show, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach and current NFL broadcaster Mike Tomlin did not rule out a return to coaching. You see, Tomlin was never fired; he simply stepped down. As a result, the Steelers own the rights to his contract, which runs through 2027 and includes a no-trade clause.
However, a recent Bleacher Report article named five teams that might lure him back to the coaching scene and waive his no-trade clause. One of the teams named was the Commanders. The article reads, in part:
Because of the Commanders' deep playoff run in the 2024 campaign, Quinn likely bought himself extra time, but it's concerning that he parted ways with his offensive coordinator after one year. In doing so, he raises questions about the construction of his coaching staff.

The Washington Commanders enjoyed a long weekend before returning to Ashburn on Monday in preparation for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. That extra time off brought some good news for the Commanders ahead of Sunday's opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Everybody participated today," Quinn said when asked about linebacker Odafe Oweh. "It was a walkthrough practice, so I'll get you an update on Wednesday, but it's a good sign that everybody's trending in the right direction. Full group out there today getting work in."
Oweh and fellow edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson were dealing with calf and knee injuries, respectively, late in training camp. Both missed some time, but Chaisson returned to practice last week. Some were concerned about whether Oweh would be ready for Week 1. Quinn's opening message on Monday would seem to indicate that the Commanders believe Oweh is trending toward playing against the Eagles.
Washington spent a ton of resources on improving the defense this offseason. New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones was the first move that the Commanders made. The biggest free-agent move Washington made was signing the 27-year-old Oweh. A first-round pick of the Ravens in the 2021 NFL Draft, Baltimore traded him to the Chargers last October after he got off to a slow start. After the trade, Oweh was outstanding, finishing with 7.5 sacks in 12 games for Los Angeles. Oweh then sacked Patriots quarterback three times in January's AFC Wild Card game.
Most of Washington's projected defense will be on the field next Sunday. Cornerback Trey Amos was placed on injured reserve last week, but everyone else is on track to play. Obviously, the Commanders will also be without star left tackle Laremy Tunsil (torn triceps) and defensive lineman Johnny Newton (torn pec), who were also placed on IR.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa and New Zealand fly together to Baltimore on Sunday to conclude their epic rugby test series without key players Cheslin Kolbe and Ardie Savea.
Both suffered series-ending injuries on Saturday as the world champion Springboks beat the All Blacks 29-24 and grabbed a 2-1 lead in the four-test series.
Kolbe, South Africa's flawless goalkicker in the series, broke his jaw when he was run over by Luke Jacobson, and Savea, the All Blacks captain, possibly dislocated his right shoulder in a clearout by Jasper Wiese. Also, New Zealand center Quinn Tupaea damaged his MCL.
Neither team planned to replace them in the squad for the final match next Saturday at the NFL home of the Baltimore Ravens.
Having guided the Springboks into a series lead after losing the first match, coach Rassie Erasmus was relieved.

The Cowboys have two defensive captains this season, and both were acquired by trading Micah Parsons.
Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams are the Cowboys' defensive captains. A year ago, the Cowboys traded Parsons to the Packers for Clark and two first-round picks, and later they traded one of those picks to the Jets for Williams.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer singled out Williams as a leader who has meant a lot to the team.
"From the minute he got here, he's been about one thing, and it's winning," Schottenheimer said of Williams. "He's never won in the NFL and the leadership is real, the talent is incredible, but every decision that guy makes is based on what's best for us winning. I love that about him, and it's infectious. It rubs off. I love hearing him talk to the young linemen, the young defenders."
Unsurprisingly, quarterback Dak Prescott is the offensive captain and kicker Brandon Aubrey is the special teams captain. Schottenheimer said the players voted on the captains, and those four players were overwhelmingly the top vote getters.

Remember when every other day featured some glowing review of rookie safety Caleb Downs and his immediate impact? That receded a bit over the past few weeks as he mostly watched preseason games from the sidelines, but that hasn't adjusted immense expectations, and now they can ramp up again on the eve of the regular season.
Downs isn't the only one raising expectations, as Quinnen Williams said some things that will get Cowboys fans fired up. Presumably, Hunter Luepke is fired up to own a piece of Von Miller's chicken farm, and former Cowboys Shiyazh Pete is still firing up people he speaks to.

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters set out to give his team and coaching staff a bit of an overhaul during the offseason. He brought in new coordinators and other coaching staff, and the roster looks quite different from what it did in 2025, especially defensively. Those changes, combined with the injuries the team sustained last season, have led NFL experts and ***** ysts to view the Commanders less favorably.
That negativity has put a chip on the shoulders of the Commanders' roster, and the fuel for that fire continues to pour in. The Athletic's Mike Sando had six NFL executives rank all 16 NFC teams, and the Commanders landed at 13th.

What did the defense look like? How was Daniels' protection? As you answer those questions, remember how that season turned out for the Commanders, culminating in Offensive Rookie of the Year honors for Daniels and an NFC Championship appearance for the Commanders.
The 2025 season was plagued by injuries, so it's impossible to know what could have happened "if" certain players remained healthy. Now, everyone wants to throw the Commanders to the bottom of the league, which is only making the players want to win that much more.

Washington Commanders tight end Ben Sinnott has made it clear that he likes new coordinator David Blough's offense. Earlier in training camp, Sinnott said the new offense was a "breath of fresh air" for tight ends.
"So many different variations," Sinnott said, via John Keim of ESPN, in discussing the different route variations. "Today we're lining up at number one, we're running five-step ins, we're running corners, we're running options, we're running flat [routes]. We're just doing everything. It's so much fun. It's a breath of fresh air for this offense and how it uses tight ends."
The 2024 second-round pick struggled to find his footing under former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. In two NFL seasons, the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Sinnott has played in 33 career games and has 16 receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Any tight end not named Zach Ertz was an afterthought in Kingsbury's offense. Quarterback Jayden Daniels also liked throwing to the reliable veteran.
This offseason, Washington moved on from Kingsbury. GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn also had enough of Kingsbury's offense. They wanted a more traditional NFL attack, with the quarterback playing under center more and a renewed focus on running the ball and play action.
Sinnott has expressed excitement more than once about his potential role in Blough's offense. The Commanders did sign tight end Chig Okonkwo in free agency, but Sinnott will play more of a hybrid role. He can line up as a traditional tight end or in the backfield as a fullback. He can also play H-back.

The Dodgers stared in the eyes of a third straight defeat, but a walk-off double by Teoscar Hernández lifted the Dodgers to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
The Cardinals were the first to strike against Tarik Skubal, as after St. Louis put the first two men on with a pair of singles, Joshua Báez smacked the third single of the inning through the right side to bring home José Fermín.
Skubal managed to work a scoreless second inning with a pair of bookend strikeouts while leaving two men on, but the Cardinals broke through in the top of the third with a pair of two-out singles from Leo Bernal and Ramón Urías, plating Iván Herrera and doubling the Cardinal lead. Skubal found himself in a groove over his next two innings, but once again put two men on in top of the sixth inning. After striking out Nathan Church for the second out of the inning, Dave Roberts went to the bullpen, pulling the left-hander after 5 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals accounted for 10 hits against Skubal— all singles— which tied his career high for the most hits allowed in a single start. It was the first time Skubal couldn't complete six full innings since he tossed five against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 11. The Cardinals wouldn't get an extra-base hit until Jordan Walker's double against Evan Phillips in the top of the seventh inning.
For a Dodgers team that struggled to hit with guys in scoring position the game prior, Thursday's matchup replicated those same misfortunes. The Dodgers scratched across a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the first inning, third inning and fifth inning against rookie Quinn Mathews, but each time, the offense found a way to be their own obstacle. The Dodgers were able to tack on one run against Mathews, with a wild pitch to Freddie Freeman in the fifth inning sailing past Herrera to plate Tommy Edman in the fifth.

On Thursday, Sept. 3, South's best choice was to set senior middle Quinn Reynolds, who had 16 kills, everything from dunks and tips high above the crowd at the net to lasers from the back row, as the undefeated Panthers swept rival North, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 at the Cougar Den.

These parts go into both commercial aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines (IGT) that generate electricity. The Miami Dolphins weren't impressed by their trio of quarterbacks battling to back up Malik Willis this preseason, which led the team to trade Quinn Ewers and cut both Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski over the weekend.
While these moves left Miami without a quarterback, they quickly pivoted and completed a trade with the Green Bay Packers to acquire Kyle McCord, who completed 65.7% of his passes for 446 yards and four touchdowns in the preseason.
Speaking with the media this week, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst explained the decision to move on from the 23-year-old.
"He played so well during the preseason. We were contemplating, do we keep three? Do we try to get him to the practice squad, what's the likelihood of that? When somebody calls you and starts talking about a trade, the likelihood of getting him to the practice squad probably isn't strong," Gutekunst said. "It's always (tough), whenever you trade a player that you like and you think has an upside, but he wasn't going to be the No. 2 here most likely, and heading into next year, who knows? It's our job to find the next guy, and develop the next guy. That's what we do. That's what we'll do moving forward."
Instead of rolling with McCord as Jordan Love's backup, the Packers took the sixth-round pick they got in return and will have Tyrod Taylor step in if their starter goes down in 2026.

The Washington Commanders open the 2026 NFL season in 10 days. Washington goes on the road for the first two games against NFC East foes Philadelphia and Dallas. It's a rough stretch to open the season for the Commanders, and being as close to 100% healthy is critical.
We know Washington will be without star left tackle Laremy Tunsil (torn triceps) and defensive tackle Johnny Newton (torn pec). The Commanders have the depth to withstand Newton's loss, but you can't replace someone of Tunsil's caliber. He's a Hall-of-Fame talent and remains one of the NFL's best at his position.
The good news for Washington is it has Brandon Coleman. While Tunsil's injury takes Coleman away from the left guard position, the third-year lineman has experience playing left tackle. He was the Commanders' left tackle during their 12-5 2024 season. He also had three starts in Philadelphia: two in his rookie year and one last season.
How healthy are the Commanders everywhere else? Over the past few days, they've gotten much healthier. Several key players have returned to practice, including Daron Payne, Marcus Mariota, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, K'Lavon Chaisson and others. Croskey-Merritt and Chaisson returned in each of the past two days.
Quinn gave an update on some of those players before the team broke for a long weekend.

Quinn Ewers went from looking like a potential answer in the Miami Dolphins to becoming one of the biggest quarterback mysteries of the Dolphins' offseason. Leading into the start of the regular season, outlets across the media landscape released their listing of the Top 100 players in the league, and as usual, there were some snubs.
This was the case with ESPN, which asked some coaches, executives, and scouts to critique its list to see where it came up short, and, in the process, Jeremy Fowler discovered one member of the ***** ans who had been overlooked: Peter Skoronski.

Skoronski is the NFL's highest-paid guard at $25 million annually. But according to NFL Rank, he's not a top-five guard. Chicago's Joe Thuney, Denver's Quinn Meinerz, Indianapolis' Quenton Nelson, Atlanta's Chris Lindstrom and Dallas' Tyler Smith round out the top 100 at that position.
Skoronski has played his way into this conversation and should be on the list next year. He ranked fourth among guards with a 96.0% pass block win rate in 2025.

Noah Igbinoghene appeared in 32 games for the Washington Commanders over the past two seasons. He made 12 starts and was a key part of Washington's defensive backfield. However, this offseason, under new coordinator Daronte Jones, the Commanders chose to go in another direction, and the 26-year-old Igbinoghene hit free agency.
A first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, Igbinoghene spent three seasons there before he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. He played one season in Dallas, where Dan Quinn was his defensive coordinator.
In 2024, Quinn was hired as Washington's head coach, and Igbinoghene was one of the many free agents the Commanders signed. After a productive 2024 season, Washington re-signed him to a one-year deal in 2025.
After departing the Commanders, Igbinoghene signed a one-year deal in March with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Seattle released Igbinoghene this week during its final cuts, and he found himself searching for a new team again.
Igbinoghene didn't have to wait long, as he signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday.
