Former major-leaguer Butch Huskey has died at the age of 54, the New York Mets announced on Friday.
Huskey played seven seasons in MLB, five of them with the Mets. He also played for the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins and Colorado Rockies. The 6-foot-3, 244-pound slugger finished with a .267/.318/.442 slash average with 86 home runs, 98 doubles and 336 RBI, while playing third base, first base, left field and right field throughout his career.
However, Huskey might be best known for being one of the last players in MLB to wear the jersey No. 42 after it was permanently retired in 1997 to honor Jackie Robinson. Players who were already wearing No. 42 (including New York Yankees Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera) were allowed to continue doing so until retiring as active players.
Huskey wore No. 42 for the Mets when MLB commissioner Bud Selig announced before the team's April 15, 1997 game versus the Los Angeles Dodgers that the number would be retired throughout the major leagues in tribute to Robinson.
"Those players who currently wear 42, including those like Butch Huskey of the Mets…. who wear the number in tribute to Jackie, may continue to wear the number for the remainder of their careers," Selig told the crowd at Shea Stadium (via The Athletic).

NEW YORK (AP) — Butch Huskey, who played seven major league seasons and was one of the last players to wear No. 42 before it was permanently retired, has died. He was 54.
The New York Mets said Huskey died because of a blood clot in his lung.
"We are saddened to learn about the passing of former Met Butch Huskey," the Mets said in a statement on Friday.
Huskey, who was born and raised in Anadarko, Oklahoma, continued to wear No. 42 after Major League Baseball retired it in honor of Jackie Robinson in 1997. Players who wore the number at the time were permitted to continue wearing it until they stopped playing.
Huskey wore No. 10 during his rookie season in 1993, No. 44 in 1998 with the Boston Red Sox and No. 35 with the Colorado Rockies in 2000. Otherwise, he wore No. 42. The Mets selected Huskey in the seventh round of the 1989 amateur draft, and he played parts of five seasons in New York.

EA Sports has revealed the Madden 27 ratings for the entire 2026 NFL draft class, along with some select undrafted free agents as well. So what ratings did the Jacksonville Jaguars' 10-man draft class receive?
There was a three-way tie among the Jaguars' draft picks for the highest overall Madden rating. Albert Regis, Emmanuel Pregnon, and Wesley Williams are at 73 overall.
Regis and Williams will immediately be rotational members along the defensive front, while Pregnon is currently slated to provide depth at guard.
Coming in at 70 overall were Jalen Huskey and Zach Durfee. Huskey will contribute on special teams right away and could push Caleb Ransaw for the third safety role on the depth chart. With Durfee, it remains to be seen where he fits in the defensive end rotation.
Nate Boerkircher, the Jaguars' first selection in this year's draft, has an overall rating of 67, which ranks seventh-best among Jacksonville's rookie class.
