The dog days of summer are in full effect, and NFL training camps are taking their toll.
Take, for instance, Tuesday's joint practice between the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints in Oxnard, California. The NFC rivals squared off for a full practice in pads. That meant competing, hitting and some guys performing for their jobs.
The result was a scrimmage that was spicy throughout and eventually erupted to multiple big fights and the ejection of Cowboys defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku.
There was the normal pushing and shoving that should be expected from any sort of joint practice. This involved Saints wide receiver Chris Olave and Cowboys safety Malik Hooker, among others.
But things really got heated multiple times as full-on fights broke out between pretty much all the players on the field.

At 37 years old now and on his fifth NFL team over a career entering its 16th year, linebacker Von Miller made one thing perfectly clear Tuesday at his introductory press conference at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Calif.
"I can still play football."
But as the eight-time Pro Bowler went on to explain, that's only part of the reason he was brought to Dallas.
"You can say what you want to say about my play on the field and what I've got left. But when it comes to being a great teammate, if there was a Hall of Fame for that, I'm going in the Hall of Fame, first ballot," Miller told reporters.
As it is, Miller is actually two full years younger than one of this year's enshrinees in the real Hall of Fame (Luke Kuechly). But the Texas native walks into the Cowboys locker room the second-oldest player on the current roster, with punter Bryan Anger beating him by just six months.

A series of fights and skirmishes threatened to derail the New Orleans Saints' joint practice session with the Dallas Cowboys, but the Saints managed to get through the afternoon without any fight-related injuries. That's not to say they got out of it unscathed. Several players exited practice early, two of them starters: running back Alvin Kamara and cornerback Quincy Riley. The severity of their injuries is not yet known.
"Only two guys who weren't able to finish practice were Alvin with a knee, and then Quincy with a groin," head coach Kellen Moore told reporters afterwards. "Other than that, good work, obviously you guys saw the chippiness of it. Not the ideal flow of a joint practice but we got the work that we needed. We'll have one more Thursday with the Rams, we've had a number (of practices) with those guys before, so (not worried)."
Moore later clarified that wide receiver Ronnie Bell left the practice with heat-related issues; he was seen walking slowly too the sideline before being driven indoors on a trainer's cart without his jersey. Wide receiver Chris Olave, the team's top wide receiver, briefly received attention from trainers after taking a hit on a catch but remained on the sidelines to observe the rest of practice. He later returned for the final sequence of team drills in a red zone period.
Fans and reporters covering the joint practice counted as many as six, seven, ten or more dustups over the course of the two-hour practice session. Both teams were fortunate to get out of it without any serious injuries from the fists and helmets flying around. We'll see if tempers flare up again on Thursday when the Saints and Rams meet for their own joint practice session.

Brazil U-15 National Team faces Uruguay at Granja ComaryCredits: Rafael Ribeiro / CBF
As part of another stage of preparation for the Liga Evolução, which will be played in September in Paraguay, the Brazil Men's U-15 National Team takes on Uruguay this Wednesday (19) at 11 a.m. at Granja Comary, in Teresópolis (RJ). The friendly kicks off at 11 a.m., with live coverage on CBF TV. On Saturday (22), the two teams will face each other again at the same venue.
"The two matches are meant to consolidate our ideas, the concepts we've worked on with the players during these seven days of activities at Granja Comary. Above all, to consolidate their behaviors, and that has also been worked on with the U-17 and U-20 national teams. We have to understand the importance of the emotional aspect for this U-15 generation, which is heading into its first official competition. The hope is that they can do everything we proposed during this period with awareness," said head coach Guilherme Dalla Déa.
Guilherme Dalla Déa, U-15 head coach, expects a difficult match against UruguayCredits: Rafael Ribeiro / CBF
He highlighted the opponent's physical style, stressing that it broadens the possibilities for evaluating the Brazilian players against a specific kind of challenge.

Christian Parker's fingerprints have been on the Cowboys' defensive rebuild from the start. Dallas has not positioned its first-year defensive coordinator as the club's final authority on personnel (this is still the Cowboys after all), but it has clearly made room for his input in shaping the unit.
Will McClay said Parker "has a vision for the guys that we have," and the coordinator reportedly spent draft week sending McClay photos of Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence. Dallas came away with both players in the first round. Cute little coincidence? Please.
That context matters in the ongoing conversation around Von Miller's arrival.
Parker has consistently presented himself as a detail-driven coordinator who wants to build around the players at his disposal, rather than shove everyone into a rigid, prepackaged system and hope it works out.
Earlier in training camp, Parker said Dallas wanted to be "detailed" in its fundamentals, technique and scheme mastery. He has also described an instructional environment built on repeated communication, situational adjustments and mental reps.

If you're Luka Dončić, the business of basketball is quite a thing.
Not only was he traded from the Dallas Mavericks, the team that drafted him, to the bright lights of the Los Angeles Lakers, seemingly without any advanced notice; he will, this season, be playing for his fifth different ownership group in the past three years.
Mark Walter, who officially purchased a majority stake in the Lakers from the Buss family in October 2025, agreed last week — amid an ongoing federal investigation into alleged fraud in his lending practices — to sell control of the team to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner.
Neither Iger nor Kushner has ever run a professional sports franchise.
That may not seem like such a big deal. Dončić entered the NBA as the No. 3 overall pick (should have been No. 1), made the All-NBA First Team in his second season and earned a maximum designated rookie contract extension from the Mavericks. He now gets to play for the Lakers, the league's most fabled franchise, on a three-year, $160 million extension.

'Unnecessary': Klay Thompson called out by Olympic gold medalist after latest off-court appearance originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Klay Thompson's recent appearance on PlaqueBoyMax's Twitch stream offered the NBA community plenty to talk about.
During a long 1-on-1 conversation with the 23-year-old streamer, the Dallas Mavericks guard broke down his all-time starting five and named Draymond Green as his closest former Golden State Warriors teammate.
At the end of the stream, after the duo wrapped up a competitive three-point contest, PlaqueBoyMax asked Thompson to honestly evaluate his basketball ceiling. Thompson joked that Max had no chance of ever making it to the NBA, adding that he had professional potential—perhaps in Italy's third division.
Their collaboration trended across social media for over a day. But former NBA All-Star Michael Redd does not like it. He took to X to criticize how modern players rely on internet streamers for attention.

There isn't much that Philadelphia 76ers star Jaylen Brown can't do on the basketball court. He is a scoring machine as somebody who can make tough shots as well as find ways to get easy looks at the basket. He is a physical player with a ton of talent and should be a key factor in the Sixers getting over the hump in the coming season.
Brown averaged 28.7 points per game in the 2025-26 season with the Boston Celtics and will bring that scoring mentality to Philadelphia. He has a decorated resume that includes winning the finals MVP award in 2024 when the Celtics knocked off the Dallas Mavericks for the franchise's 18th championship.
To prepare for his first season in Philadelphia, Brown is back in the gym working on his ball-handling in order to help the Sixers move forward in the coming season.

Wild Kyrie Irving trade proposal sends Mavs superstar to Raptors in package deal originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Kyrie Irving is one of the most exceptional basketball players in the NBA. The nine-time All-Star and 2016 NBA champion is still widely regarded as one of the best players in the league despite his advanced age.
Currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks, there are various trade rumors surrounding him in the offseason. Ahead of the next season, it looks like he could play for a new team though the Mavericks don't seem to be entertaining it. However, one hypothetical trade has been making the rounds on social media.
Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley recently outlined a hypothetical trade on August 17, 2026, in which the Toronto Raptors would acquire Kyrie Irving from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Immanuel Quickley, Ja'Kobe Walter and a 2028 first-round pick that is top-five protected.
Irving missed the entire 2025-26 season after tearing his left ACL on March 3, 2025. Buckley's proposal ***** umes the Raptors complete their pending acquisition of Kawhi Leonard and pairs the returning Irving with Leonard and Scottie Barnes. Toronto ranked fifth in defensive efficiency during the 2025-26 regular season but only 15th offensively, with notable weaknesses in isolation (25th) and pick-and-roll ball-handler efficiency (23rd).

Mavericks' Kyrie Irving issues 'never see another player like me' statement in fresh clip originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Kyrie Irving has been one of the most gifted playmakers of his generation. Dallas Mavericks found him firsthand when the generational talent teamed up with Luka Doncic to reach the 2024 NBA Finals.
But the last year and a half have been grueling. The nine-time All-Star tore his ACL in March 2025 and missed the entire 2025-26 season. He faced such a shocking setback for the first time in his 15-year career. Now he's heading into the 2026-27 season declaring himself fully healthy and ready to get back on the floor.
With his return locked in, Irving isn't shy about reminding people of his legacy. In a clip shared by Bleacher Report, he could be seen watching highlights of himself during a live stream and telling viewers, "Y'all will never see another player like me... I'm cut from a different cloth."
The video shows off exactly why Kyrie Irving is so special on the court. It captures his signature style perfectly: the lightning-fast crossovers, the hesitation moves that leave defenders frozen and the crazy finishes around much bigger players at the rim. Before his injury, fans used to say his footwork and touch were completely unmatched.

It's officially official - Von Miller is a Dallas Cowboy, and the move has already sparked a wave of opinions across the NFL landscape. No one expects Dallas to get the Super Bowl 50 MVP version of Miller, but the Cowboys didn't make this signing for nostalgia. They made it because Miller still brings value on the field, in the locker room, and in a young edge‑rusher room that needs a veteran voice.
Miller arrives in Dallas as the active NFL leader in career sacks, but his impact goes beyond production. He's widely regarded as an elite teammate, a mentor, and the type of veteran presence the Cowboys have been searching for. Jerry and Stephen Jones have openly discussed improving the defensive front for weeks, and Miller's signing is the clearest indication yet of that intent.
While Miller has not yet practiced, the Cowboys' coaching staff and front office faced immediate questions about what the move means. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who will work closely with Miller in practice settings, offered strong praise for what the Aggie legend brings to the building.
"What I love about Van is we've got a lot of inside information, knowledge about him, as a player. Certainly, what he's accomplished is incredible, but what you hear about him as a teammate is even more incredible. my few conversations with him, he's, really excited about being part of what we're building here. He's going to add a lot, not just on the field, but off the field as well."
Schottenheimer also emphasized Miller's role as a mentor, something already taking shape. Miller has a pre‑existing relationship with Donovan Ezeiruaku thanks to their time together at the Sack Summit, a pass‑rush development event Miller has championed for years. For a Cowboys defense loaded with young talent, that connection matters.

Jerry Jones accused of 'idiotic' move that ruined Dak Prescott's MVP season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Cowboys' defense was a problem throughout 2025, a collapse that began after Jerry Jones traded All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons before the season even kicked off. He was shipped to the Green Bay Packers for Kenny Clark and two first-round picks. Losing the generational talent completely shattered the team's pass rush.
However, Dak Prescott threw for 4,552 yards (3rd in the NFL), 30 touchdowns (4th in the NFL) and 10 interceptions for a stellar 99.5 passer rating. Despite his MVP-level performance, Dallas finished with an underwhelming 7-9-1 record and missed the playoffs.
With training camp underway, the frustration over that trade is boiling back up on X. Popular Cowboys **** yst and former defensive end J Tuck didn't sugarcoat how he felt about the front office wasting Prescott's elite season.
"You'll never get fans to admit the truth about the Micah trade it was idiotic and ruined a MVP season from our QB," Tuck wrote. "But we HAVE to move on and allow this defense to become something new it's not gonna be as [bad] as the DQ ERA but they 'should be' blue collar and get the job done just hold them to 23 points."

One of those football adages that has always stuck with me came from a member of an NFL team's front office circa 2010: "Never let desperation be confused with a plan." It came at a time when his team was signing anyone and everyone at defensive back to fill an injury void, and he told me this anonymously because he disagreed with the approach of throwing money at free agents, rather than letting rookies get their reps in and take lumps as a result.
At first glance the decision by the Dallas Cowboys to sign Von Miller seems like desperation. The team is still reeling from the need to find pass-rush help in the wake of trading away Micah Parsons, while coming to the realization that Rashan Gary and Donovan Ezeiruaku really aren't the marquee talents you want to get after opposing quarterbacks. Miller is 37-years-old, he's a journeyman, and the Cowboys are his fourth team in the last five seasons.
Miller remains one of the most impactful pass rushers in the NFL. The future Hall of Fame lock has been reduced to just having one trick in his bag — but that's all the Cowboys need at this point.
It's completely understandable if you didn't watch the Commanders play last season. Heck, even die-hard Commanders fans would forgive you for skipping over their debacle of a 2025 campaign. What we saw out of Von Miller in Washington was punctuated brilliance. Dan Quinn and the coaching staff were well aware of what Miller can and can't do on the field at this point in his career, so he was used predominantly as a 3rd-down pass rusher, or an additional linebacker in some gadget sets. This concept worked extremely well, as Miller finished the 2025 season with 10 sacks and 36 total pressures on just 289 pass rush snaps.
This pressure rate of 12.4% is prolific compared with the pass rushers he joins now. Rashan Gary's pressure rate was 13% — but Ezeiruaku's was considerably worse at just 9%. This means that there's a natural advantage on third-down pass-rushing situations to swap out Ezeiruaku for Miller, bolstering the attack as a result. This becomes even more intriguing with the addition of Caleb Downs, whom Dallas selected in the draft. There's a gravity which comes from throwing Miller on the field which can't be avoided, even as he gets older — meaning he needs to be accounted for on third down situations. While he might not command a true double, there will need to be a chip block thrown his way as well, because this is still Von Miller we're talking about.

Azzi Fudd injury leaves Wings facing alarming reality before Fever rematch originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Wings have learned just how valuable Azzi Fudd is during her rookie season. Fudd has missed six games because of injuries, including Dallas' last five while dealing with a right knee issue. The Wings' results without the No. 1 overall pick have exposed a troubling problem at a critical point in the season.
Dallas is 19-11 when Fudd plays and just 1-5 without her. That translates to a .633 winning percentage with the rookie guard and a .167 mark when she is unavailable. Fudd was ruled out of Monday's matchup against the Golden State Valkyries, which ended in another Dallas loss. The Wings fell to 20-16 and remained in eighth place in the WNBA standings.
Dallas still has some breathing room in the playoff race, but its dependence on Fudd is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Fudd has not played since Dallas' 96-92 loss to the Washington Mystics on Aug. 5. She finished that game with nine points, three ****** ists and three steals in 28 minutes. The Wings initially listed Fudd with right knee soreness after she experienced discomfort during pregame warmups ahead of an Aug. 7 matchup against Golden State. Dallas held her out as a precaution, but the absence has since extended to five consecutive games.

Stephen Curry has spent years turning Chase Center into his personal playground for ridiculous shots from impossible distances. On Monday, though, the Golden State Warriors superstar got to watch someone else steal the long-range spotlight.
With Curry in the building for the Golden State Valkyries' matchup against the Dallas Wings, veteran guard Tiffany Hayes launched a 33-footer at the end of the first quarter. The shot beat the buzzer, gave the Valkyries a 20-19 lead, and sent "Ballhalla" and the basketball world into a frenzy.
The Wings had taken a 19-17 lead after Arike Ogunbowale knocked down a mid-range jumper. Golden State answered with a play that looked almost too casual for the moment.
Hayes slowly brought the ball up near halfcourt before pulling up from deep. She released with plenty of confidence, and the shot dropped cleanly through the net as the quarter expired.
The celebration that followed was almost as impressive.

Week 2 of the preseason marks a pivotal point in the backup quarterback battle for the Los Angeles Rams, as Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson look to put on a show against the New Orleans Saints in a joint practice and in Saturday's game.
Bennett started the preseason opener in Kansas City, but Simpson dominated headlines with an efficient, effective performance that saw the Rams pull away in the fourth quarter. When asked on Monday, head coach Sean McVay stated that the joint practice would determine what this week's quarterback rotation will look like when the Rams make their 2026 SoFi Stadium debut.
"I think that will be predicated on how the practice against New Orleans goes, how tomorrow goes," said McVay. "I think what's been helpful for us is really just taking it a day at a time. I know I get myself out of whack when I get too far ahead of myself. We ask our players to stack days, be totally and completely present. I have not made that decision yet and genuinely, that is the truth.
"A large part of that decision will be predicated on what happens on Tuesday and then a lot of it, especially with what happens on Thursday. I'm hopeful that we're able to get as many reps as we did against Dallas. New Orleans has a practice against the Cowboys on Tuesday. Hopefully they come out of that thing healthy and we're able to get what Kellen [Moore] and I have talked about as the workload for our ones and twos. That'll be great situational work and great ability to be able to move the ball all over the field."
In Kansas City, Bennett played the first quarter, with Simpson finishing out the game. Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford is expected to participate in the joint practice, as well, which will push Bennett to the second team and Simpson potentially out of the rotation again.

Azzi Fudd's fans expressed dissatisfaction with the Dallas Wings' social media team on Monday after they celebrated Arike Ogunbowale's latest milestone. In the 78-70 loss to the Golden State Valkyries, Ogunbowale recorded her 1000th career **** ist. The Wings' X account posted a graphic, congratulating the veteran for her latest feat.
Fudd's fans didn't have a direct issue with the team celebrating Ogunbowale. However, they were angered that the No. 1 pick didn't receive the same recognition for breaking the franchise 3-point rookie records. Fudd has the most 3-pointers in a season, in a game, and in a quarter by a Wings rookie.
The Wings never posted about her setting the franchise rookie record of 61 3-pointers in a season, which she clinched on Aug. 3 against the Connecticut Sun. After seeing the shoutout for Ogunbowale, several Fudd fans slammed the social media team.
"it's not too late to post one for Azzi Fudd… no need to be shy, c'mon now," one fan said.

Lakers get Klay Thompson update that Los Angeles shouldn't be surprised about originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers simply have a need for more talent on both sides of the basketball, though at this stage of the offseason, nearly entering September, there aren't a slew of ways for them to do so. The Lakers will have some opportunities to improve, at least before the trade deadline when the season gets going, but for now, Los Angeles has to hope things go its way.
It remains uncertain how things will play out, but the Lakers definitely have their eyes set on Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson.
Thompson, who isn't the same player that he once was, would still be a nice addition. He's already played with Luka Doncic, even if it was short-lived, and that showed a lot of promise. While the Lakers have some interest, the Mavericks have yet to decide on his future in Dallas.
"Two sources briefed on the process said this week that it remains unclear how the situation will play out. Dallas currently has 16 standard contracts on its books — one more than the league maximum that will be allowed as of Oct. 19 — but Thompson's fate remained undecided as of Sunday," Marc Stein wrote.

When the Los Angeles Lakers landed Luka Doncic in a stunning trade with the Dallas Mavericks in February 2025, it was like they had won the Powerball jackpot. Doncic was just 25 years of age at the time, and it reset their entire timeline at a point when it looked like their opportunities to win another NBA championship with LeBron James and Anthony Davis had run out.
Doncic averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 **** ists a game last season, and he may be just beginning the prime of his career. He is a nightmare for opposing defenses in the NBA, and in the mind of Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey, he would also be a nightmare for one of the biggest villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Maxey was asked in a video for Complex which NBA player could defeat Thanos in a game of one-on-one, and he said it would be Doncic.
"Probably Luka. Luka just ain't scared of nothing, you know what I mean? I can see Luka on an island, one-on-oneing Thanos…I think Luka can step back pretty much anybody. I don't think Thanos would scare him at all."
Indeed, Doncic's step-back 3-pointer likely gives many an NBA player bad dreams at night and is very difficult to defend. His superpower on the basketball court seems to be his ability to accelerate, then come to an abrupt stop and go backwards in the reverse direction. It is the type of motion that seems to put his defenders in cement, so to speak, and allows him to gain enough separation to get off a jump shot.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gabby Williams had 23 points and seven rebounds, Veronica Burton added 16 points and five ******* ists, and the Golden State Valkyries clinched a playoff berth by beating the Dallas Wings 78-70 on Monday night for their sixth straight victory.
Golden State (25-9) has already surpassed its win total from last season by two and will get another chance on the postseason stage after becoming the first expansion franchise to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season of 2025. The Valkyries lost to the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx by one point in Game 2 of their first-round matchup.
Golden State center Kiah Stokes played 23 minutes in her return from the concussion protocol after she missed last Wednesday's home win against Chicago.
Another sellout crowd at Chase Center cheered the team to its 15th win in the last 17 games overall — among those fans Warriors star Stephen Curry, son Canon, and some teammates.
The Valkyries took off in the second quarter after another slow start, ending the first half on an 11-0 run on the way to a 44-28 lead at the break. Golden State began 3 for 13 while Dallas made seven of its first 10 shots to go ahead 15-8.

There's a bit of good news and not-so-good news coming out of the Seattle Seahawks' Monday practice.
On the positive side, running backs Jadarian Price and Jacardia Wright are back in pads and practicing in team drills. The potentially bad news? Second-year wide receiver Tory Horton, who missed the back-half of last season with a crackted tibia, was not part of Monday's session at VMAC.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald didn't have much to offer in terms of injury specifics for Horton or anyone else.
"Tory's working through some things," Macdonald said at Monday's press conference. "Yeah, not a lot of updates on the injury front right now, but they had a couple guys down today."
Horton did not play in Saturday's preseason loss versus the Dallas Cowboys, although it's unknown whether that's injury related or if he's enough of a key offensive component to not be risked for a game. Dating back to his final season at Colorado State, he's had consecutive seasons end prematurely due to leg injuries.

Puka Nacua's latest injury update could change Rams' preseason plans originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Rams aren't taking any chances with Puka Nacua as their star wide receiver works his way back from a lower back injury.
Head coach Sean McVay said the Rams are taking Nacua's recovery day by day and won't rush him back onto the practice field while he continues to experience soreness.
Nacua left Los Angeles' joint practice against the Dallas Cowboys last Tuesday after experiencing discomfort. McVay said Nacua "still has some soreness," leaving open the possibility that he may not return to practice until next week.
Last Thursday, McVay described the issue as "a little soreness" in Nacua's psoas, a muscle connecting the lower spine to the thigh bone. At the time, McVay said he anticipated Nacua returning the following week.

Every season feels like it's the Super Bowl or bust for the Dallas Cowboys and their fans, but the team's offseason moves don't always reflect that mentality. This season, however, it sounds like there's a chance that they could.
The Dallas Cowboys already made a big splash this preseason when they signed veteran pass rusher Von Miller on Sunday, adding immediate talent to their defensive line. However, it sounds like the team is open to more moves, too.
Last month, Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted at a possible "substantive" trade to help bolster the roster.
"I'd be very interested," Jones said during the team's annual news conference to open training camp via The Athletic. "I'd give up the future to [get something] substantive to where we are today — as to a player — to give you an idea about what I invest, something substantive, to get the right kind of deal and improve us for opening day. I would. I feel that good about this team this year. Of course, you know that I haven't seen this team play together, but in general, looking ahead, I think we've got a chance to be worthy of spending some future if we saw an opportunity."
More specifically, Jones said that he would be willing to give up a "top pick" for a defensive playmaker like a linebacker or a pass rusher.

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Von Miller can help the Dallas Cowboys on the field and their inexperienced group of edge rushers in the locker room.
"He's been in the game for a while. All-Pro, Pro Bowl guy, Super Bowl MVP, Super Bowl champion. He brings a lot of knowledge and experience," outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku said Monday, one day after Miller agreed to terms with his hometown team.
The NFL's active sack leader with 138 1/2 in 203 games over 14 seasons, Miller should bring the attributes on and off the field to further elevate what seems to be a much improved defense under new coordinator Christian Parker.
Miller had nine sacks in 420 snaps for the Washington Commanders last season, which would have led a Cowboys unit that was one of the worst in football by nearly any measure. Coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated the 37-year-old Miller would be used in a similar fashion, primarily allowing him to rush the quarterback.
"Still got first-step quickness. He still understand angles. He's still got a great **** ortment of counter moves," Schottenheimer said. "And, again, our plan to use him we think will help him be very, very functional. He's not going to play 60 plays a game. That's not what we're looking for."

Impressive preseason performances from Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar and second-year quarterback Will Howard have sparked early optimism surrounding the team's future.
This has fans calling for one of the young quarterbacks to start. However, longtime sports ****** yst Rich Eisen is shutting down any speculation that the young signal-callers will push veteran starter Aaron Rodgers to the bench this season.
During an "Overreaction Monday" segment on "The Rich Eisen Show," Eisen pushed back against the notion that Rodgers should be on a short leash at age 42 if his play declines or if the rookies appear ready.
"That's absurd. That's just not going to happen," Eisen said. "He will be, his final season will be sacrificed on the altar of evaluation for the future? That's what you're saying. They're not benching Rodgers."
While dismissing the idea of an in-season benching, Eisen noted that the strong preseason debuts from Allar and Howard validate Pittsburgh's hiring of head coach Mike McCarthy. Known for his history of developing quarterbacks with both the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy was brought in specifically to establish stability at the position for the post-Rodgers era.

The Dallas Cowboys started their game against the Seattle Seahawks allowing a 13-play drive for 80 yards that lasted over seven minutes. It felt like watching the 2025 defense, but from then on they didn't allow a single point, forced two three-and-outs, and conjured up a goal-line stand on a four-and-out to seal the victory.
The defense was terrific overall, going from 19 missed tackles in last season's first preseason game to zero against Seattle.
They held the Seahawks offense to 14 first downs, only two yards per pass, under four yards per rush attempt, and one touchdown in four red-zone trips. Seattle managed only 29 passing yards after the opening drive and went under 50% on third- and fourth-down conversions. The incredible play leaves plenty of options for players to see their stock rise on the Dallas defense, but here are the top three.
The post-game signing of Von Miller makes every snap more important for every edge not named Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezieruaku, and Malachi Lawrence. James Houston could be in a battle for one spot with Sam Williams, Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Marist Liufau, and he stepped up against the Seahawks once again.
He had three tackles, a sack, a tackle for a loss, and a QB hit. Houston was the highest-rated defensive player by Pro Football Focus (PFF) with an 86.5 overall grade. He was already a tough cut after how he produced last season, but his first game of 2026 was another step to the 53-man roster.

Things can change very quickly in the NFL, and one former Oregon Duck learned that the hard way.
Former Ducks wide receiver Traeshon Holden was cut by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, according to Dallas Morning News reporter Joseph Hoyt. The Cowboys signed Holden as an undrafted free agent in 2025. The move to release him from the roster opens up a spot for the future Hall of Fame edge rusher Von Miller, who the Cowboys agreed to a contract on Monday.
Holden quickly became a fan favorite with the Cowboys in training camp last year. He made some plays in the preseason, but he truly impressed fans and the coaching staff in training camp to earn a spot on the practice squad in Dallas, where he spent all of last season.
Coming into his second season, Holden was expected to contend for a roster spot, but he had a tough showing in the team's first preseason game on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. Holden didn't catch any passes and **** ed a punt, resulting in a turnover. Undrafted rookie Camden Brown caught two touchdowns as well, making Holden an easier name to let go of.
While he won't be staying in Dallas, Holden could catch on somewhere else. His speed and ability to make tough catches intrigued the Cowboys enough to keep him on the practice squad last year, and another team could have a similar feeling and keep him on the roster.
