A twist of fate saved Mark Wahlberg's life on September 11, 2001.
Wahlberg, 55, had been booked on American Airlines Flight 11, the plane that was hijacked and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, but changed his travel plans before that morning, according to a Daily Mail report published Friday, September 11. Instead of making the trip from Boston to Los Angeles, the By Any Means actor traveled to Toronto after a friend invited him to see his film at the Toronto International Film Festival.
All 92 people aboard Flight 11 were killed after five hijackers took control of the plane and crashed it into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m.
On the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Wahlberg acknowledged the emotions that still surround the day.
"This anniversary is always a gut punch of emotions…words just can't say it all. #neverforget911🇺🇸🗽 #freedomisntfree🇺🇸 ," he wrote on Instagram alongside a video of an American flag.

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — A flight that was scheduled to carry Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Moldova to Norway earlier this week was delayed when authorities closed Moldova's airspace because of a drone incursion, a government spokesperson said.
Moldovan police said a Russian drone crashed on Tuesday in a sunflower field on the outskirts of a village in the district of Riscani, which caused four fires to break out but no injuries.
Government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici said on Wednesday that Moldova had closed its airspace Tuesday afternoon to protect aircraft flying over the country at the time. The closure delayed three departures, including the flight carrying Zelenskyy.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told broadcaster NRK that Zelenskyy's plane "was nearly hit by a drone as it took off from Moldova" on its way to Oslo for King Harald V's funeral. Zelenskyy arrived in Oslo on Tuesday and met Støre to discuss potential support for Ukraine's air defenses before attending the king's funeral on Wednesday.
Moldovan authorities confirmed the drone came down and exploded 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Chisinau International Airport. The airspace restrictions were lifted and Zelenskyy's plane took off later than scheduled.

All four of the top women's seeds are into the semi-finals of the US Open for the first time since the 1975 edition of the tournament.
All of two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, new world No 1 Elena Rybakina, former finalist Jessica Pegula and 2023 winner Coco Gauff survived three-set thrillers to make the last four, with Kazakhstan's Rybakina usurping Sabalenka at the top of the world rankings as a result.
The men's tournament has stood in sharp contrast: top seed Alexander Zverev has now reached the semi-finals of all four grand slams this year, but many of the other big names crashed out early.
The shocks started in the first round as 23-time grand slam champion and fourth seed Novak Djokovic suffered his earliest exit at a major in 20 years, with third seed and last year's semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime and 2024 runner-up Taylor Fritz falling in the third round.
Carlos Alcaraz made a fine run to the quarter-finals on his return from a nearly five-month injury layoff but lost to Ben Shelton in a deciding set tiebreak, with an American finalist guaranteed as the eighth seed faces Frances Tiafoe. The men's semis are completed by 2022 semi-finalist Karen Khachanov.

Federal regulators said the two crew members aboard the Amazon cargo jet that crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday survived the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided the update during a Sunday press conference after officials said the cargo plane overran the runway and caught fire while landing. The crash killed five people and injured five others, authorities said Sunday.
The jet collided with two vehicles carrying at least eight occupants, according to NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy.
Seven of the victims were in a van that was struck and "torn apart" on airport grounds, Homendy said. The 2012 white Ford Econoline van was owned by Ocean Service Corporation, a contract cleaning company that provides services for airlines, she said.

Naomi Osaka's 2026 US Open came to an end at the hands of Elena Rybakina. Surprisingly the superstar was quite upbeat despite her defeat, and she explained why.
Naomi Osaka's search for a first Grand Slam **** le since 2021 will continue into 2027. The 28-year-old superstar crashed out of the US Open in the Round of 16.
Osaka surprisingly did not put up much of a fight during her match against the world No. 2 ranked Elena Rybakina. This year's Australian Open winner took care of Osaka in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-4.
One might expect the disappointment to be great in the face of such a loss. However, the **** anese star was fairly level in defeat, and opened up on why she is not as sad as some might expect.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash after giving a ceremonial pen from a 9/11 remembrance ceremony to a top aide who once represented a convicted al Qaeda member whose brother-in-law hijacked the plane that struck the Pentagon.
Mamdani signed executive orders Friday ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, designating the date a citywide day of remembrance and service and strengthening efforts to prevent future terrorist threats.
After signing the final order, Mamdani handed the pen to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and asked her to pass it to chief counsel Ramzi Kassem. Kassem previously represented Ahmed al-Darbi, who pleaded guilty to war-crime charges tied to al Qaeda plots against commercial ships and was the brother-in-law of Khalid al-Mihdhar, one of the hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, killing 184.

Looking at the top 20 of the past two Ballon d'Or votes, one name is conspicuously missing: Enzo Fernández.
So far, the Argentine has never really played a major role in the World Player of the Year vote, and yet Manchester City paid Chelsea around €145 million for the midfielder just a few days ago. Have they made a huge mistake?
Okay, ever since Robert Lewandowski failed to win the Ballon d'Or in 2021 at the latest, we've known that things do not always go entirely fairly in that vote. Even so, there have recently been quite a few players who clearly performed better than Fernández.
Chelsea's chief orchestrator led the Blues to a disappointing tenth-place finish last season. In the Champions League, the London club crashed out heavily against PSG in the round of 16 (2:8 on aggregate). And now he is supposed to lead the Sky Blues to **** les on both the domestic and international stage?
Of course, City did not sign Fernández entirely without reason. The 25-year-old possesses enormous playmaking qualities. His vision, passing ability, and finishing quality in particular are in some ways strongly reminiscent of City legend Kevin De Bruyne.

President Donald Trump is proving to be a very challenging commander-in-chief to work around for most investors, even as markets have soared during his tenure. On April 3, 2025, the day after the much-hyped "Liberation Day" barrage of new tariffs, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) fell 4.8% as the Magnificent Seven group of technology companies corrected sharply downward.
Just six trading days later, most of the damage had been erased, leaving investors with whiplash and prompting many to wonder whether they'd sold their **** ets too hastily. Volatility never went away, but it now concentrates in individual stocks rather than the market as a whole. The gap between average single-stock volatility and index volatility hit an all-time high of 31% in early July 2026, according to CBOE Global Markets. Therein lies the crux of why markets are still struggling to get a read on what the president is going to do next.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
U.S. tariff policy has changed more than 50 times since January 2025, according to the Tax Foundation. In most of those cases, investors learned about the policy changes via a social media post from the president. The market's moves with each new change have frequently rivaled past stock market crashes in size.
For instance, Nike crashed 14% on April 3, 2025, and Apple declined by 9%. Both crashes were caused by the companies' heavy reliance on supply chains in Asia, which were hit by the new tariffs. Then, on April 9, 2025, Trump waived the initially declared tariff rates for 90 days, causing Apple to bounce by 15.3%. The S&P 500 itself had its best day since 2008.

A bitter legal fight between Aaliyah's uncle and her cousin has produced a stunning accusation: Barry Hankerson is blaming his own son Jomo for the 2001 plane crash that killed the R&B star.
The claim surfaces in lawsuit documents obtained by TMZ, which show Barry alleges Jomo was hired and compensated to coordinate travel for Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat" video shoot in the Bahamas. Barry contends Jomo "failed in his responsibility" to carry out that role, and states the crash "may have been avoided had [Jomo] followed through on his compensated task of travel coordination."
Barry also says his relationship with his son was never the same after Aaliyah's death.
Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, when a small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands, killing all nine people aboard. Investigators found the plane was overloaded, and pilot Luis Morales III had falsified FAA credentials, had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system, and was not certified to fly the designated aircraft.

After a brutal stretch, Strategy (MSTR) is winning back some believers. Canaccord Genuity recently raised its price target from $130 to $175 and kept a "Buy" rating on MSTR stock. ******* yst Joseph Vafi said the company's balance sheet is now "war-chested" with enough cash to do more than just cover its dividends. The stock, which is essentially a bet on Bitcoin (BTCUSD), jumped about 12% on Aug. 27 as the cryptocurrency rallied above $80,000. Formerly known as MicroStrategy and chaired by Michael Saylor, Strategy is the world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin.
Strategy is coming off a rough patch. From mid-May to late June, MSTR stock was cut by well over half. When BTC crashed to around $58,000 in late June, Strategy sat on a paper loss of roughly $13 billion, about a fifth of what it paid for its coins. The recent rally flipped that loss back into a profit, with Bitcoin now trading above Strategy's average purchase price but below the $80,000 mark again, currently changing hands at around $77,300 per coin.

A crash, a penalty… what next? For a man who's just turned 20, Italian hotshot Kimi Antonelli has already endured a tumultuous relationship with his home grand prix: the electrifying, old-school Monza circuit, long christened Formula 1's Temple of Speed.
Two years ago, on the same weekend that Toto Wolff announced that then-F2 driver Antonelli would have the small shoes of Lewis Hamilton to fill in 2025, Antonelli took part in his first F1 session. On his second flying lap, full-send around the final high-speed Parabolica corner, the teen dumped his car violently into the wall. Then, in 2025, Antonelli crashed again in practice before receiving a penalty for track limits and running Alex Albon off the circuit.
Coming in the midst of a helter-skelter rookie year, Wolff acknowledged that Antonelli's ninth-place performance had been "underwhelming," urging his protege to "just free up." Fast-forward 12 months, Antonelli is potentially 11 races away from becoming F1's youngest-ever world champion. And on Thursday, he acknowledged he feels "very free mentally."
Yet Antonelli's chances of becoming the first home driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ferrari's Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966 are slim, bordering on zero. The championship leader, 59 points clear at the top, will take a 20-place grid penalty this weekend as he exceeds his engine allocation for the season. Mercedes's thinking is that, with Monza's mammoth long straight, overtaking from the back of the grid will be easier come raceday. Still, it feels a shame to lose the budding romance of a potential first Italian winner in 60 years.
"In some ways, it makes me a bit more relaxed going into the weekend," Antonelli said in the FIA press conference. "That's why I'm going to be able to enjoy more the driving and the weekend itself. Also, it's a different opportunity.

Golf legend Tiger Woods was arrested in March for yet another vehicular accident. Woods agreed to a Breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol, but he refused a urine test and showed signs of impairment during the ordeal.
Officers found two painkiller pills in his pocket, and he told deputies he had taken "a few" prescription medications earlier that day. Later, Woods pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to testing.
Recently, Woods announced he planned to change his not guilty plea, according to court documents filed Tuesday. Woods was scheduled to appear in court on September 8th but is now expected on Wednesday morning for a plea conference.
The golf legend has been involved in a few other crashes over the years, all of which have stunted his illustrious career. In 2021, he survived a crash in Los Angeles so severe that doctors considered amputating his leg. Woods was not charged with any crimes as authorities determined the crash was caused by excessive speed and not impairment. On the other hand, in 2009, Woods crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree outside of his residence around 2:00 a.m. Police suspected Woods was under the influence or impaired by medication, but no actual charges followed.
Woods has had to bow out of golf due to several back surgeries and lower-body injuries that have affected his mobility. As a result, Woods has battled with prescribed substance dependency. As of June, he formally stepped away from the game and traveled outside of the United States to seek treatment at an inpatient treatment facility.

Twenty-nine years after the Paris crash that killed Princess Diana, Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul, Trevor Rees-Jones remains the only person who was inside their Mercedes and survived.
Rees-Jones left the Ritz Paris in the front passenger seat shortly after midnight on Aug. 31, 1997. The Mercedes crashed into a pillar in the Pont de l'Alma underpass. Paul and Fayed died at the scene, while Diana was taken to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she died several hours later.
Rees-Jones was not Diana's personal bodyguard. The former British Army paratrooper worked for the Fayed family and had been ******* igned to protect Dodi, which also placed Diana within his security responsibilities while the couple traveled together, as PEOPLE reported on the crash's 29th anniversary.
He survived with severe head, chest and facial injuries. For the investigations that followed, however, one consequence proved especially significant, Rees-Jones could remember leaving the Ritz, but almost nothing reliable about what happened afterward.
French investigators questioned Rees-Jones within weeks of the crash, hoping the sole surviving occupant could explain the Mercedes' final journey. His head injury had left major gaps in his memory, and those early interviews produced little that investigators considered useful.

Trevor Rees-Jones, Princess Diana's bodyguard, was the sole survivor of the 1997 car crash that killed her and Dodi Fayed
He sustained severe injuries, underwent extensive reconstructive surgery and later wrote a memoir defending himself against conspiracy theories
Rees-Jones has since rebuilt his life, working in security roles and living privately with his family in England
Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was the sole survivor of the deadly car accident that claimed the lives of Princess Diana, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul in 1997.
Following a romantic dinner at the Ritz Paris on the evening of Aug. 30, 1997, Rees-Jones accompanied Diana and Dodi as they traveled from the hotel to Dodi's apartment. But the couple — and their bodyguard — would never reach their destination, as their vehicle crashed head-on into a concrete column while attempting to evade paparazzi.

MUMBAI: When the Duleep Trophy semifinals began at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Sunday, 19-time champions West Zone were conspicuous by their absence.
West crashed out after a 52-run defeat to North Zone in a low-scoring quarterfinal, with North posting 251 and 222, while West managed 187 and 234.
Former Mumbai first-class cricketer Amit Dani, who coached West Zone this season, believes the tournament's knockout format needs a rethink.
"I suggested to the BCCI that it should seriously consider not having knockout matches until the final in the Duleep Trophy. It's the first tournament of the season and players are often a bit rusty. Even if North Zone had been knocked out after just one game, it wouldn't have been fair on their players either," Dani told TOI.
Dani argued that the current format limits opportunities for players and selectors alike.
"The selectors wanted to watch Tanush Kotian, but they got to see him in only one match. It was a difficult wicket where the ball was gripping and turning, making batting tough. Players need more games. With the final scheduled only on Sept 6, there is room for one more league match," he said.
Despite the early exit, Dani found plenty of positives in West's campaign. He reserved special praise for Musheer Khan, whose 96 in the fourth innings was the highest score of the match.
"On that wicket, it was a top-quality knock. It wasn't easy to bat there, but Musheer showed superb temperament and skill," Dani said.
He felt Anshul Kamboj's brisk 60 in North's first innings and Ruturaj Gaikwad's run-out while batting on 66 in the chase proved decisive.
"For us, Musheer, Tanush and Tushar Deshpande stood out. Tushar bowled with real fire and intensity. I hope all three are considered for India A or the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup," Dani added.

Novak Djokovic crashed out in the first round of the US Open after a five-set, near five-hour ordeal during which he was repeatedly sick on court.
The 39-year-old looked physically spent throughout the match and was regularly doubled over in pain, but still took Argentina's Mariano Navone the distance.
Djokovic swallowed pills and used an inhaler after vomiting at least three times, but despite being in obvious discomfort, he refused to throw in the towel.
However, the 24-time grand slam champion could not prevent a 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 defeat and first exit in the opening round of a major since Paul Goldstein beat him at the Australian Open in 2006.
The last time the Serbian great had been seen on a tennis court, in Cincinnati two weeks ago, he was collapsing to his knees and being sick into a towel.

GRAND BLANC, MI — Steven Alker crashed the Block party.
Alker made four consecutive birdies on the back nine en route to a final-round 4-under 68 to hold off a big-name leaderboard and run away with The Ally Challenge crown at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club on Sunday, Aug. 30. It was Alker's 13th victory on the 50-and-older PGA Tour Champions tour — including his third this season and his second in as many weeks.
Alker, 55, from New Zealand, took sole possession of the lead with a birdie at the par-4 12th hole, then expanded it with a two-putt birdie at the par-5 13th hole, as Michael Block, the one-time viral sensation, made bogey.
"Perfect number," Alker said of his second-shot, 3-wood approach from 245 yards into the 13th hole, where the momentum really swung to his corner. "Worked out well."
Alker made birdies at Nos. 14 and 15 (the latter on a 60-foot putt), too, as he seized yet another ****** le and bolstered his standing in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup points race, which he's won twice before. Alker won for the second time in Michigan, having won the Senior PGA Championship in 2022 at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor.Alker entered Sunday's final round two shots back of Block, the 50-year-old PGA Tour Champions rookie who was looking for his first win in any PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament.

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana: Julie Beaumer won Moto 1 of the Ironman National to secure the overall victory via a tiebreaker over Chance Hymas.
This was Beaumer's second overall win of the season. He also won at Spring Creek.
With 12 minutes on the clock, Beaumer took the lead from Cole Davies and moved into the overall lead, but Chance Hymas was charging. He ran out of time, but the second-place finish in the race and overall was a moral victory of sorts.
The Moto 1 winner, Hymas crashed on the opening lap of the second race. He fell to the mid-teens on the first lap, then crashed a second time. It's not how many times you fall, however. Hymas remounted again and moved into the top 10 at the midway point.

One of the most closely watched investment themes in recent years has been the accelerating focus on artificial intelligence (AI), and social media giant Meta Platforms (META) is certainly leaning heavily into the trend. The company is reportedly preparing to take its AI ambitions a major step further, with plans to launch a consumer-facing AI agent in the coming weeks and roll out a new AI model as early as October, according to The Information, citing internal documents. The consumer AI agent, internally known as "Hatch," is built on Meta's OpenClaw AI agent and could debut as soon as late August or early September.
Unlike a conventional chatbot, Hatch is designed to interact directly with external websites and services, potentially allowing users to accomplish tasks across platforms such as DoorDash (DASH), Etsy (ETSY), Reddit (RDDT), Yelp (YELP), and Microsoft (MSFT) Outlook. And, Meta is exploring ways to bring third-party AI agents into WhatsApp. The company is reportedly preparing a feature that would allow users to connect with external AI agents, with limited testing potentially beginning as soon as this week. The potential business opportunity is also attracting attention.
