Manchester United fell short of securing all three points on Merseyside on Sunday. Everton pulled out two screamers in the final minutes to equalize twice against Michael Carrick's Reds in what could easily have been a second straight win. Instead, it's a third match in a row conceding two goals and more to ponder going forward about the defensive approach.
The Reds looked the better side for much of the contest. A first half of positive wing play did not produce many chances despite the exciting options up front. The best looks at goal came on a try for the spectacular by Bruno Fernandes and a ball across the box by Marcus Rashford.
Matheus Cunha was the one who got on the end of the ball from Rashford, but he sent the chance well over the target with his shot form the edge of the box.
United got on the scoresheet right after the restart though. After emerging from the dressing room at 0-0, Bryan Mbeumo got an opportunity to cut inside and fire past Jordan Pickford in the 46th minute. It was a low effort that beat the England No. 1 to his right side.
It appeared that the goal could spark a second-half flurry, but Everton settled in and began a long push for an equalizer. Senne Lammens was called to action a handful of times without the Blues finding a clear look at goal, and United's only real threat to double the lead came from another bit of Rashford magic. He skipped through the defense and somehow maintained the balance and poise to heel the ball to Cunha centrally, but James Tarkowski got a foot through the Brazilian's legs to poke the ball away before he could fire.

Deadlocked at the halftime interval in what looked to be a fixture headed to full time without a definitive result for either side, it was the Red Devils who broke the deadlock with a sensational hit by Bryan Mbeumo.
After receiving from Kobbie Mainoo, the Cameroonian darted forward and slalomed his way through the Toffees defence before curling an effort into the bottom corner beyond Jordan Pickford.
With that, Mbeumo finally bagged his first Premier League goal against Everton on his staggering 22nd attempt.
A player who has hardly struggled to find the back of the net against big opponents on his day, Mbeumo will be keen to remain a vital cog in the wheel for Michael Carrick's men as Manchesrer United hope to push for major honours this season.

If anyone was going to be England's savior it was going to be Bellingham. Again.
"Enough said, he does it every single match," said England boss Thomas Tuchel when asked about Bellingham after the game. "World class."
For the fourth time in six games at this World Cup he was the difference for England as they edged past Norway to reach the 2026 World Cup semifinals. In the lead up to this World Cup Thomas Tuchel challenged Bellingham publicly on several occasions. Looks like it worked. He has now scored six goals.
"He's brilliant. His mentality is what puts him on that level," England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford smiled. "He pops up at times every game. Big blocks, you saw in the last game against Mexico that last-ditch tackle from a set-piece was as good as a goal. We know the quality everyone has up top and Jude getting rewarded. The Everton players not involved with their national teams returned to Finch Farm to start their preseason fitness conditioning and training on Friday. Jordan Pickford remains with the England side while Idrissa Gueye, Iliman Ndiaye and Nathan Patterson are taking extended breaks following their World Cup efforts.
Attacking midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was the life of the dressing room last season and looks like that hasn’t changed.
Blues will be encouraged to see defensive lynchpin Jarrad Branthwaite back on his feet and training again, and it appears he has switched to the more conventional squad number 4.
New signing and Everton’s first addition of the summer midfielder Hayden Hackney was also present at the training.

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane has captained his England side to a second semifinal in three World Cups, but it was not easy. Norway took the lead in the first half after and thought they could take the lead into halftime until Jude Bellingham scored his first of the match. Norway thought they took the lead in the second half, but VAR spotted a foul before the corner kick was taken.
