NORMAN — David Stone let something slip during fall camp that he wasn't supposed to.
While OU typically waits until the week of its season opener to announce its football team captains, the star defensive lineman revealed he is learning the ropes as one of the Sooners' captains for the 2026 season.
"This is my first time ever being captain of any team, so I told the guys I'm grateful for the opportunity that you guys have given me," Stone said after Friday's practice.
More: OU football QB John Mateer is calmer entering Year 2 as Sooners' QB1. Here's why
When asked if the team had picked captains, Stone nervously laughed and said, "Nah." But he talked about his process stepping in the role for a minute before going silent.

Pakistan avoided a series defeat by beating the West Indies by eight wickets in the second Test in Port of Spain on Wednesday. The win ended Pakistan's eight-match losing streak in away Tests and gave them their first Test victory outside home in three years.

The two-match series finished 1-1 after the West Indies had won the first Test by 90 runs.

It was Pakistan's first away Test win since July 2023, when they defeated Sri Lanka under Babar Azam's captaincy. Since then, Pakistan went through several changes in coaches, selectors and captains, with Babar stepping down from the role twice. This time, the combination of captain Babar Azam and head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed helped Pakistan return to winning ways overseas.

Pakistan chased down the target of 75 runs on the fourth morning, reaching 77/2 shortly after the first session. Abdullah Shafique, who scored a century in the first innings, remained unbeaten on 24, while captain Babar Azam also finished unbeaten on 24.

Earlier, Pakistan bowled out the West Indies for 117 in their second innings inside the first half-hour of play on a wearing Queen's Park Oval pitch. Off-spinner Sajid Khan took 4/32 and left-arm spinner Ali Usman claimed 4/39 as the pair shared eight wickets.

The West Indies began the day on 106/3 with a lead of 60 runs, but their lower order could not add much. Ali Usman dismissed Kemar Roach and Shamar Joseph, while Justin Greaves, the last recognised batter, added only two runs before playing Mohammad Ali's delivery back onto his stumps while attempting a cross-batted shot.

The West Indies were also without opener Brandon King in the second innings. He could not bat because of a back injury suffered on Day 3 when he ran out Babar Azam with a direct hit from short cover.

Pakistan's previous away Test win had also come under Babar Azam against Sri Lanka in 2023. During Shan Masood's time as captain, Pakistan lost 3-0 in Australia, 2-0 in South Africa and 2-0 in Bangladesh.

Masood was removed as captain after Pakistan's poor run in Test cricket. Babar returned to the role but Pakistan lost the first Test against the West Indies in Tarouba, which became their eighth consecutive away Test defeat before bouncing back in Port of Spain.

The victory also changed the standings in the World Test Championship. Pakistan moved up to eighth place with 22.22% of points after two wins and four defeats in six matches. The West Indies dropped to ninth with 20.83% of points after two wins in 12 matches.

Ohio State is on the cusp of preseason training camp.
There are just over four weeks of practices before the season opener against Ball State on Sept. 5.
As the Buckeyes ramp up at preparations at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, here is one question facing each of their position groups.
Will Julian Sayin be a captain?
Sayin has drawn praise for his leadership during summer strength and conditioning workouts, and it's clear his standing has grown a year after he spent the offseason competing with Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job. Both Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud were captains during their second season as starters, suggesting Sayin could find himself on a similar path. If he becomes the Buckeyes' first quarterback voted as a captain since Stroud in 2022, it would provide the clearest signal yet of his rising stature within the program.

With the LIV Golf Tour hanging on by a thread, Bryson DeChambeau hosted a players only meeting to discuss the future of the league. The meeting took place subsequently after LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil and other executives met with the captains of the LIV Golf teams. While few players commented on the happenings, there are some indicators.
Richard Bland said, "Bryson just ran through what he knows, and obviously, we're trying to do it as a group, but we're individuals as well, so I think the next two to three weeks is going to be where it's at. We're in this together; we're fully backing Scott. I think probably in the next two to three weeks we'll have a bigger picture. We're just in that kind of stage at the minute that we're positive with what's going on, but we just need everything to be fully signed off so you can go forward."
LIV Golf has yet to confirm if their Team Championship will occur as scheduled at The Cardinal in Plymouth, Michigan on August 27th-30th. The preparations for the event still need completion, which is unusual. It seems unlikely they will be finished.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. — LIV Golf players emerged from more than 90 minutes of meetings Tuesday afternoon at Trump National Bedminster Golf Club with little new information about the status of the league's team championship later this month or potential new investors.
"No updates," Thomas Detry, a member of Dustin Johnson's 4Aces team, told Front Office Sports after the meetings ahead of this week's LIV Golf New York event. "Just positive information."
Captains of LIV's 13 four-man teams met with LIV CEO Scott O'Neil inside the Trump Bedminster clubhouse for roughly 40 minutes, before that contingent joined the rest of the league's players and team GMs for a separate meeting in a different building for about 20 minutes. O'Neil and team GM's exited at that point, and Bryson DeChambeau led a players-only meeting for more than 30 minutes.
"Bryson just ran through what he knows," Richard Bland, a member of the Cleeks GC team, told FOS and other reporters at Bedminster. "We're trying to do it as a group, but obviously we're individuals as well. So, I think the next kind of two-three weeks is going to be where it's at."
Byeong Hun An, captain of Korean Golf Club, said the players-only portion of the meeting "went well. It was fun, and no one's throwing fists or anything, which was good. Bryson was talking, and it was pretty good. The vibe was good."

Former England Test captain Ben Stokes could become the highest-paid player in Big Bash League (BBL) history after retiring from international cricket after series defeat against New Zeland. According to reports from Code Sports, the all-rounder is attracting significant interest from multiple BBL franchises, with the Sydney Sixers leading the race for his signature ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2026, bringing the curtain down on a glittering England career. However, the 35-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to step away from the game entirely and intends to continue playing domestic and franchise cricket around the world.
Unlike several former international captains who moved directly into coaching or broadcasting, Stokes wants to remain an active cricketer. The England great recently returned to action for Durham and is expected to play a larger role in the County Championship, hoping to help his home county achieve sustained success.

Now, as per Code Sports, Ben Stokes has shown interest for BBL and a bidding war has reportedly broken out among BBL franchises, with the Sydney Sixers emerging as the frontrunners to secure Stokes' services. The Sixers' advantage stems from the appointment of former England white-ball coach Matthew Mott, who shares a successful history with Stokes. The pair famously guided England to the 2022 T20 World Cup ******* le in Australia, with Stokes scoring an unbeaten 52 in the final against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Stokes is also no stranger to the Big Bash, having represented the Melbourne Renegades during the 2014/15 season. However, several other franchises are also monitoring the situation closely. The Hobart Hurricanes are among the teams interested, with Cricket Tasmania previously expressing its desire to bring the England star to Tasmania.
Reports suggest Cricket Australia is optimistic about securing Stokes for at least part of the upcoming BBL season. The proposed marquee deal is believed to be worth around AUD 600,000, which could make Stokes the most expensive overseas signing in BBL history.

One challenge remains scheduling. Stokes may prefer to spend Christmas with his family in England before potentially joining another franchise competition. The South Africa-based SA20 begins in January, creating a possible scheduling conflict for the all-rounder.
132854778
n immediate IPL return, however, appears unlikely. Under current BCCI regulations, Stokes cannot enter the IPL auction until 2028 after opting out of the 2025 mega auction. Players who skip the mega auction are ineligible for the subsequent mini auctions under the existing rules. He is also unavailable for the current edition of The Hundred, having not registered for the player draft.

Following Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket, England have turned to a familiar face to lead their Test side once again. While there had been widespread speculation that Harry Brook could take over the captaincy, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has instead entrusted the role to Joe Root, who is set to begin his second stint as Test captain.

Root, who stepped down from the role in 2022 after a five-year tenure, admitted he is relishing the opportunity to lead England again, believing his previous experience has better prepared him for the challenges ahead.

"Very much the same, to be honest. I don't think that will ever change. Whenever you get the opportunity to lead your country, it's all of those things. I guess, the unique and nice position that I find myself in this time is I've got a wealth of experience in terms of knowing what it takes, knowing what it looks like, having seen success with it and seeing some hard times as well,'' said Root in a video on the official ECB website.
"I've got a lot to fall back on and look at and help me and the team moving forward into this next little while. So, I don't think many captains get that opportunity and certainly not with the amount of games that I have behind me and the experiences that I've had in between now and that period there. So, I'm very much looking forward to it, very excited by the challenge that lies ahead and all the great cricket that we have coming up," Root added.
Root captained England in 65 Test matches, registering 27 victories, the most by any England Test captain. Although he stepped down in 2022 after a difficult phase for the team, he has continued to be one of England's most dependable batters.

The 35-year-old will officially begin his second stint as Test captain when England host Pakistan in the first Test of the series, starting August 19, as he looks to lead the side into a new chapter alongside new Test head coach Stephen Fleming.

President Giuseppe Marotta and everyone at FC Internazionale Milano stand in solidarity with the Baresi family and his brother Beppe during this time of grief.Franco Baresi has passed away, taking with him one of the figures who most defined the history of the Milan derby through consistency and excellence. AC Milan captain, team leader and club icon, he built his career on defensive intelligence and leadership that earned recognition even from his opponents.
Born in Travagliato on 8 May 1960, Baresi made 719 appearances and scored 33 goals for the Rossoneri, spending 20 years exclusively with Milan, between 1977 and 1997. In the 35 derbies he played against Inter, his name became synonymous with composure and reliability in a rivalry that was always filled with intensity.
Within that rivalry, the strongest bond was the one with Giuseppe Baresi. Two brothers, two captains, who grew up together and later found themselves wearing opposite colours, yet remained united by a respect that was never in question. For them, the derby was never just a match: it was a direct challenge, a responsibility, but also a balance to be protected. "We tried to leave it outside the door. There was always the concern that neither of us would get injured," Franco recalled. And then there was that almost everyday normality before the game: joking together, a way of easing the tension before 90 minutes that meant much more than just a football match for Milan.
On 2 March 1980, the day San Siro was named after Giuseppe Meazza, that story was captured in one defining image: the Baresi brothers facing each other inside a stadium that was becoming an even stronger symbol of the city and its rivalry. A photograph that tells the story of the derby better than many words. The final image, once again inside San Siro: the Olympic Torch ceremony, carried together with Beppe Bergomi. An endless derby, a bond with the city that remains unbreakable.
From Inter and the entire Nerazzurri world, the memory of a great opponent, a protagonist of the battles that helped shape the very meaning of the Milan derby. With respect.

The Miami Dolphins sort of shocked some of their fans and ***** ysts when they went out and drafted three linebackers in this year's NFL Draft. Just this past week, they also extended one of their defensive captains in Jordyn Brooks after a phenomenal season. So, the Dolphins appear set at linebacker and that's even with Tyrel Dodson on the roster.
Which is why it wouldn't be shocking to see Dodson traded at some point as his name has come up in trade talks. If Jacob Rodriguez can perform in training camp and inspire some confidence, then the Dolphins should probably explore Dodson's trade value. While he won't command much, he is a cheap veteran option for a team in need.
You can check out that story here, and the rest of the day's round-up below.
The Miami Dolphins ended the trade speculation around one linebacker — but it may be time to wonder about another
The offseason was filled with trade speculation for Miami Dolphins star linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Is it time to speculate about another veteran linebacker being a trade piece?

Spain manager Luis de La Fuente made several bold decisions ahead of the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, which in hindsight all paid off.
Some of his biggest decisions, in fact, came before the tournament at the time when he announced the list of players he was calling up for the event.
As part of his selection process, the manager dropped some of Spain's biggest veteran stars, including two former captains, Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Morata, but many of the omitted stars did make their way to New York to witness the eventual final.
It was Barcelona's Ferran Torres who scored the winning goal for Spain against Argentina in the final, and given how the goal came after a gruelling 106 minutes, the celebrations in the Spanish camp were aggressive.
Following the hard-fought win against Lionel Messi & co. Lamine Yamal was seen sharing a special moment with former captain Morata during the same period.

The matter is now closed, whereas there is still a need to further discuss Lorenzo Pellegrini's deal – the midfielder, in fact, is still a free agent after his contract ended on June 30th.

Over the weekend, the United States named its 20-person roster for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, and two former Terps will be playing for Team USA — with one special distinction.
Leah Crouse, who played her graduate year with Maryland in 2022, is one of the athletes named. Now plying her club trade with Tokyo Hockey, the 26-year-old Crouse has earned 72 caps for the women’s national team and will be counted on at the highest level.
Emma DeBerdine was named one of two captains for the team at this World Cup. The five-year Terp, who had to take a break year from school in order to play on the team that went to the 2024 Paris Olympics, has earned 69 caps for the national team and will earn more this summer.
The tournament will take place from Aug. 15-30 in Belgium and Netherlands. A full schedule can be found here, with results updated as time goes on.

It is the eternal question facing women's Test cricket: how do you improve at something that you hardly ever get the chance to do?
Before the start of every Test both captains are asked about how special it is to play the format and whether they would like to do so more often.
It is a tiring yet necessary ritual for both players and press, considering the scarcity of these matches.
And the answer is almost always the same: yes, we would love to play more Tests, but we're not sure how the schedule allows it.
England's one-off match against India, the first women's Test to be played at Lord's after 150 for the men, was a week of mixed emotions.

South Africa have handed chances to four uncapped players as Rassie Erasmus shuffles his pack again for the meeting with Wales.
A heavily-rotated Springboks side made it two wins from two in the Nations Championship as they overcame Scotland in a tough battle in Pretoria, and Erasmus again takes the opportunity to look at the depth of his squad.
20-year-old playmaker Vusi Moyo is given a first opportunity at fly half, with Sharks teammate Jaco Williams installed on the wing for his first cap.
Carlu Sadie, a key figure in Bordeaux Begles’ back-to-back Champions Cup crowns, starts at tighthead, while fellow French-based forward Ruben van Heerden (Montpellier) starts in the second row.
Pieter-Steph du Toit again captains the side with Siya Kolisi not involved.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are running it back.
According to a report from Josh Carpenter in the Sports Business Journal — and later announced by Versant — both stars are confirmed to return for a second Optum Golf Channel Games, with the event moving to Wednesday, Dec. 16 on Golf Channel and USA Sports. Scheffler and McIlroy are, for now, the only two names locked in. The eight-man field that filled out the inaugural event, Ryder Cup captains Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald among them, along with Shane Lowry, Haotong Li, Luke Clanton and Sam Burns, hasn’t been rebuilt yet, at least not publicly.
The inaugural Golf Channel Games aired live from Trump National Golf Club Jupiter last December, with Scheffler and McIlroy each drafting four-man teams for a night of made-for-TV skills challenges: a timed driving competition, a 14-club closest-to-the-pin format, a four-man relay, and a head-to-head captain’s challenge between the two captains.
As Awful Announcing covered when the event was first announced, the format was built for entertainment rather than high stakes, drawing more comparisons to the pair’s Happy Gilmore 2 cameos and to TGL than to the Ryder Cup. The night ended on a tape-measure playoff, with an inch separating Scheffler’s team from McIlroy’s after a 47-yard chip-off. AA’s original coverage framed the event as part of a wider trend of golf leaning into entertainment outside the weekly Tour calendar, alongside the sport’s growth on YouTube and the first successful year of TGL, which McIlroy co-founded and Scheffler did not join.
Versant officially completed its spinoff from Comcast and NBC Sports in January 2026, and Golf Channel has continued to build out its golf portfolio since, with Golf Channel EVP Tom Knapp telling Front Office Sports that the split gives the network more freedom to experiment. Versant has extended its DP World Tour rights through 2030, signed McIlroy to a deal through 2038 that includes a stake in a new content studio called Firethorn Productions, and, days before Carpenter’s report, agreed to acquire golf simulator company Full Swing for $530 million.

As Morocco prepares to take on France in a World Cup quarterfinal at Boston Stadium (Gillette Stadium) on Thursday, July 9, in a rematch of a 2022 semi-final, what should be a competitive and hard-fought fixture between two of the world's top teams carries an unfortunate distinction.
For the second time in seven World Cup matches in Foxboro, a player will go up against a national team from a country where he is currently facing rape charges.
Atlas Lions captain and defender Achraf Hakimi, who plays for Ligue 1 giants and back-to-back Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, is set to stand trial in France on a charge of rape stemming from an alleged **** ault in 2023. For his case, the 27-year-old strongly denies the allegations and says he looks forward to his day in court.
Ahead of kickoff, in what will be Hakimi and Morocco's second match at Boston Stadium this summer, here's what you need to know about the Moroccan captain and his legal case.
Hakimi is a 27-year-old right back who plays for PSG and captains the Morocco Men's National Team. Born in Madrid and raised in its suburb Getafe to Moroccan parents, Hakimi's talents became apparent at a young age. At 8, he signed as a youth player for Club Deportivo Colonia Ofigevi, then moved over to the famed Real Madrid academy a year later. Initially a winger, he was moved to being a more offensive-minded right wing back during his time in Los Blancos' youth setup.

Caitlin Clark has one request for WNBA legends after Indiana Fever's historic All-Star breakthrough originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Indiana Fever are sending three starters to the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game for the first time in franchise history, and Caitlin Clark has just one request for the league legends responsible for drafting the teams.
Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell were all voted into the starting lineup for the July 25 showcase in Chicago, giving Indiana one of the biggest storylines heading into All-Star festivities. While the trio celebrated the milestone, Clark admitted she's already thinking about what comes next, and hoping the Fever stars don't get separated.
Unlike previous seasons, the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game won't feature player captains drafting the rosters. Instead, Hall of Fame legends Teresa Weatherspoon and Cynthia Cooper will serve as honorary general managers and build the two teams. That prompted Clark to make a lighthearted plea after Friday's practice.
"Whoever is drafting, if you want to keep us on the same side, we'd appreciate that," Clark told reporters.

Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu has been "waiting to play" again ever since Glasgow Warriors' United Rugby Championship semi-final defeat by Bulls and is also keen to address regrets from the autumn.
Tuipulotu captains the Scots against Argentina in the opening summer Test of the Nations Championships series. The Pumas recovered from 21-0 down at half-time to defeat Gregor Townsend's side at Murrayfield in November.
And the British and Irish Lions centre endured the disappointment of missing out on a home final in the URC as South Africa's Bulls triumphed at Murrayfield in June.
"It feels like a long time," Tuipulotu said. "It's important for us to get back on the field.
"You carry these games with you and the first thing that you want to do is get back on the field and I suppose, not reverse it, but give yourself a chance to rid yourself of the feeling."
