ALLEN PARK — For the first time under coach Dan Campbell, the Detroit Lions have more than six captains.
And for the first time in his professional career, defensive tackle Alim McNeill is one of them.
The seven-man crew of 2026 captains — McNeill, quarterback Jared Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, offensive tackle Penei Sewell, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, linebacker Jack Campbell and punter Jack Fox — was determined through a democratic process, with players submitting their nominees on a piece of paper. Those with the most votes received the honor.
"Yes and no," said McNeill on Tuesday, Sept. 8, asked if he was surprised by the recognition from his teammates. "I feel like I worked and put the work in to be a captain, but I wasn't necessarily looking for it when we did it, and they chose me. I'm thankful, grateful."
Whether McNeill can return to form is one of the most crucial pivot points for the Lions in 2026. He was impactful and ascending when the team awarded him a four-year, $97 million extension in October 2024, but he tore his ACL two months later, sidelining him for the final stretch of Detroit's 15-2 season.

The singer, songwriter, model and Empire star was engaged to be married. The couple share a one-year-old son, Joey.
"After much thought, I have made the difficult decision to end my engagement and relationship with the father of my child," she wrote in an Instagram post.
"I loved deeply, believed wholeheartedly in the life we were building, and wanted nothing more than to protect our family. Unfortunately, I also had to face a painful truth: there had been repeated infidelity throughout our relationship, including during some of the most vulnerable and meaningful moments of my life."
Serayah concluded, "This chapter did not end the way I prayed it would," and noted that she would not share more details publicly, citing her son's privacy.

We continue our USC Behind Enemy Lines series with UCLA Wire and its editor, Dylan McNeill. In this article, we ask about UCLA football ticket sales and UCLA athletic department revenue. These are two huge concerns - and shortfalls - for the Bruins after their move to the Big Ten.
"The profitability of UCLA athletics in the Big Ten Conference will always be in question due to the amount of travel they have to do," McNeill told us. "The Big Ten cuts UCLA a jumbo check every year but the best way for the Bruins to combat any financial concerns is with a strong football program. UCLA has invested heavily into that football program, hiring Bob Chesney to turn around the fortunes of the program. The school has followed Indiana's blueprint to building a college football program and if the results follow, or even come close, then a profitable football program will ease any and all financial concerns."
The Indiana comparison is obvious and undeniable. Indiana now prints money on football after being a total ***** ody and an absolute nothingburger in the sport for decades. If Bob Chesney even comes remotely close to the Curt Cignetti standard, UCLA will be in great shape. The real question, though, is if Chesney makes UCLA a solid and respectable program - 8-4 or 9-3 - but never makes big bowl or playoff games. Would that be enough to truly turn around the financials in Westwood? We will have to wait and see.

We continue our USC Behind Enemy Lines series with UCLA Wire editor Dylan McNeill. Next question: Who is Bob Chesney's most important staff hire going into the coach's first season with the Bruins?
"The quickest way to start playing competitive football is having a strong defense, which makes new UCLA defensive coordinator Colin Hitschler the most important hire for Bob Chesney's staff," McNeill told us. "Hitschler has had co-defensive coordinator experience at Alabama, Wisconsin, Cincinnati and with Chesney at James Madison. Hitschler has coached some strong defenses over the past few years and if that can continue in 2026, UCLA has a shot at playing winning football in the Big Ten this season."
It's hard to argue with McNeill's answer. When UCLA was able to stand up to USC, it was because the Bruins had a physical, hard-nosed defense under then-coordinator D'Anton Lynn. When UCLA's defense was soft under other coordinators, the Bruins really didn't have a chance against the Trojans. Whether Colin Hitschler hits the mark as defensive coordinator is certainly a core variable for UCLA football this season. The Trojans hope he does as well as Alex Grinch did at USC. That would put the Men of Troy in position to run Los Angeles for many more years.

After exiting Friday's training camp practice to be evaluated for injury, presumed starting defensive tackle Alim McNeill has reportedly gotten good news.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, McNeill is believed to be okay after exiting Friday's training camp practice. The Lions were evaluating McNeill for a neck injury.
McNeill, 26, is expected to be one of the Lions' starting defensive tackles, and the hope is that the 6-foot-2, 310-pound defensive lineman can get back to his 2024 form. McNeill had totaled 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks before suffering a torn ACL in his right knee in December of 2024.

Rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder was one of two Detroit Lions that exited Friday's training camp practice early to be evaluated for potential injuries. Rolder was being evaluated for a leg injury, while starting defensive tackle Alim McNeill was being evaluated for a potential neck injury.
On Saturday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Rolder will indeed "miss some time," but Rolder "didn't suffer a severe injury."
That's some bit of good news to hear that Rolder is not expected to miss major time.
Rolder is a rookie that the Lions selected in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Rolder totaled 118 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, and one interception throughout his collegiate career with the Michigan Wolverines. The 6-foot-2, 238-pound linebacker led Michigan with 73 tackles last season.
Rolder added seven tackles for loss, two pass breakups, two sacks, and one interception last season at Michigan.

The Detroit Lions, who will conduct their first training camp practice of the year Wednesday, placed offensive lineman Christian Mahogany on the active/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list Tuesday, and defensive back Christian Izien was placed on the active/Non-Football Illness (NFI) list.
These designations are similar to that of the active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which safeties Kerby Joseph (knee) and Brian Branch (Achilles), as well as tight end Tyler Conklin (undisclosed), were placed on Sunday. All five players cannot practice until being activated, but they can be activated at any time. The one difference is PUP has to do with football-related injuries. NFI is for injuries or illnesses that occurred away from the team.
Veterans reported to Allen Park on Tuesday.
It's not immediately known what exactly Mahogany and Izien are dealing with, though Lions coach Dan Campbell will likely share injury updates regarding those two, along with Joseph, Branch and Conklin, during his news conference Wednesday.
The Lions on Tuesday also released defensive tackle Jay Tufele, a veteran who was signed in April and figured to compete for opportunties as depth behind presumed starters Alim McNeill and Tyleik Williams.

That cup final win over the Pars was said to the the catalyst for the period of success we enjoyed under the legendary Jock Stein, so Charlie deserves great credit for his contributions to the Celtic fairytale.
Charlie who was the cousin of Paddy Crerand signed for the club in September 1958, and made his full debut a year later in a 1-0 League Cup win over Raith Rovers at Celtic Park, but it wasn't until the appointment of Jock Stein that he fully flourished, as he suffered from inconsistency due to Jimmy McGrory playing him in serval positions, without ever settling in the one role. That understandably affected his confidence.

Where are they now: McNeill had a smooth recovery from his ACL, returning in about 10 months on October 20, 2025. While his production during the 2025 season wasn't up to his previous standard, that is to be expected in the first year back from an ACL. He should be back to himself in 2026.

Padraig Harrington repeated as U.S. Senior Open champion, shooting a 4-under 66 on July 5 to defeat runner-up Stewart Cink by four strokes at Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington.
Harrington, who also won the tournament in 2022 and 2025, began the day one stroke behind Cink but got off to a fast start with birdies on the first two holes. He finished with five birdies in the round and was 12 under for the tournament.
Harrington received the winner's share of $800,000. Cink, who shot a 71 on July 5 to finish at 8 under, received $432,000 for finishing second.
Behind Cink were George McNeill at 6 under, Ian Poulter at 5 under and Retief Goosen, Paul Stankowski and Jamie Donaldson at 4 under.

A year after going head-to-head down the stretch during the final round of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open in Colorado, Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington will repeat their competitive performance at Scioto Country Club on July 5. This time with Cink hoping for a different outcome.
Harrington won the faceoff last year at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, eking past Cink by one shot to secure his second national senior championship ****** le. The Irishman finished 11 under to Cink's 10 under.
Entering Sunday's final round at Scioto, Cink's 9 under total is one shot better than Harrington. Second-round leader George McNeill sits two back at 7 under.
"It probably naturally does add a little bit [of fire] because we did this last year," said Cink, whose third-round 64 included five birdies and matched Darren Clarke for low round of the day. "We've done it a number of times other than last year, and before the [Champions Tour] as well, back in the early days. I think we did this in the Ryder Cup.

The Lions have completed their first week of 2026 OTA. That means we have some injury and participation updates on various players. That includes Levi Onwuzurike who has made a remarkable recovery from spinal fusion, but is now recovering from an ACL. He was a participant at OTA.
Here is my ****** ysis of what Onwuzurike's OTA participation means for his health as excerpted from Lions OTA Day 3: Dan Campbell Injury & Participation Updates:
In February, I reviewed the curious medical situations of Onwuzurike and Josh Paschal. In summary, Onwuzurike had ACL surgery around May 2025 - shortly after signing a 1-year free agent contract. There were (and still are) many reasons why the Lions might move on, but it looks like they are giving Levi every opportunity to earn a spot. This should be seen as good news for his health and outlook.
Unless there is a setback with the knee, Onwuzurike should be ready in plenty of time for training camp and the season. However, production expectations should be tempered in the first year back from an ACL, as seen with fellow lineman Alim McNeill.
