Detroit is still without a permanent general manager, and training camp opens Sept. 17. Shawn Horcoff is running day-to-day operations on an interim basis, with one significant restriction: he cannot make trades. Chris Ilitch has brought in an outside search firm, and the list of outside names has already been trimmed.
Most of the attention has gone to the candidates coming from other organizations. But three of the most credible Red Wings GM candidates already work in the building, and the Wings need to at least consider looking at them.
Steve Yzerman's tenure in Detroit was less than fruitful; fans and ******* ysts both tried to stay faithful to the so-called "Yzerplan." Yzerman stepped down on July 15 after seven seasons that produced zero playoff berths, and he remains with the organization as a senior adviser to Ilitch rather than having been fired outright. During his tenure there seemed to be no urgency to help the team make it back to the playoffs, even though they were within range the past three seasons.
Now, this is not the complete fault of Yzerman, as he was handcuffed by Chris Ilitch. Reports have come out that Yzerman needed approval from Ilitch on certain deals, more specifically signing Steven Stamkos as a free agent, just to see him put up productive seasons — 69 goals across two campaigns for the Nashville Predators, 27 in his first year and 42 in his second.
Yzerman's highlights of acquisitions for the team are trading for Alex DeBrincat and signing Patrick Kane coming off hip surgery. He also had his fair share of misses, such as Andrew Copp ($5.625 AAV/5 years), J.T. Compher ($5.100 AAV/5 years), Michael Rasmussen ($3.200 AAV/4 years), Vladimir Tarasenko ($4.750 AAV/2 years), and the list can go on. He made poor contract extensions and signed aging superstars to try and get any juice that they had left.

Kyle Shanahan believes that the Los Angeles Rams are so pressed about playing the 49ers at SoFi Stadium that they convinced the NFL to move the game to Australia this season, and San Francisco's coach said on Sunday that it still won't matter. In a press conference just days ahead of their Week 1 matchup, Shanahan said that the league "let the Rams off the hook" by moving a Niners "home game" (aka at SoFi Stadium) to Melbourne, but that "it won't be much different here".
Shanahan expects the same pro-49ers crowd to be present at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds this Thursday.
The 49ers have had an undeniable presence at SoFi Stadium, but Shanahan isn't being shy about his belief that the Rams have pushed the NFL to move the game as to avoid the story this year. ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio has described Shanahan's attitude about the game this season as "salty" regarding the trip to Australia:

The Diamondbacks came into the game looking for a series win, and with a little bit of luck, putting some more ***** e between their competition for the final NL Wild Card spot. Having Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound was a point in their favor, but the offense still RVSP'd maybe when invited to the game.
The Diamondbacks were quiet in the top of the first, with the only baserunner being a Geraldo Perdomo hit by pitch, and that allowed the Astros to strike first. E-Rod got Jeremy Pena to ground out, but Yordan Alvarez absolutely clobbered one for a solo home run. That was the first indication that Rodriguez didn't have his best stuff today, but the next few batters hammered that home, even if there wasn't much damage done. He walked both Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker, but alternated those walks with a line out from Jose Altuve and got out of the jam with a Nelson Velasquez strike out. 0-1 Astros
This, of course, did raise some concerns amongst the faithful about the early need to score more than one run. That's been a challenge for the Diamondbacks, last night's four run outbreak aside. The offense decided to do some to ***** uage those fears, but did not manage to score multiple runs right away. Corbin Carroll started off the second inning with a double, advanced on a sac bunt from Tommy Troy, and then scored on a sac fly from James McCann. Illdemaro Vargas tried to keep things going with a two out single, but Lawler was unable to step up and ended the inning with a line out to third. Tied 1-1
Rodriguez issues with command continued right away in the bottom of the second, walking Dalton Varsho. Never a good idea to walk someone like him, as he showed when he stole second to get into scoring position two outs later. Too late for it to matter, though, as Jeremy Pena only saw three pitches and flew out to end the inning.
The third inning was… something. Perdomo singled to lead off the inning, bringing Ketel Marte to the plate. Marte got an 86 MPH changeup down and away and turned it around for what looked like an easy single. The only with that is the ball also acted as a heat seeking missel straight to Perdomo's helmet. He hit the ground immediately and quickly found himself surrounded by trainers from both teams. Eventually he left under his own power to a nice ovation from the Houston crowd, as one does.

Fans of the LSU Tigers didn't have too much to jeer at on Saturday night in Baton Rouge. Things took a turn for the worse, however, when former quarterback Jayden Daniels appeared on the scoreboard.
During a timeout, the school aired an "NFLSU" segment to commemorate past LSU Tigers who've made a name for themselves in the NFL. Lloyd Cushenberry III, Reid Ferguson, Damien Lewis, Zavion Thomas and Grant Delpit all received courteous cheers from fans remembering the good times that came from formerly watching those same players compete in Death Valley.
Amid his offseason controversy over his former No. 5 jersey being used for sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett, the Baton Rouge faithful did not take too kindly to seeing their 2022-23 quarterback's face on the scoreboard.
After much anticipation and preseason controversy, Lane Kiffin's debut began with a 51-10 rout over Clemson. Six years after it was banned for its racist overtones, the "Gator Bait" cheer reutrned Saturday in Gainesville for Florida's 2026 college football opener.
The Universitty of Florida's marching band played the cheer in the first quarter of the Gators' Sept. 5 game against Florida Atlantic for the first time since then-president Ken Fuchs banned it at football games in 2020.
Former UF defensive star Lawrence Wright popularized the term in 1995 after a win over rival Florida State when he said, "If you ain't a Gator, ya Gator bait, baby." The phrase caught on with the Florida faithful during the team's run of success under coach Steve Spurrier.
Even though Fuchs acknowledged the cheer itself wasn't racist, he based his decision on the "historic racist imagery **** ociated with the phrase." The Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University said that newspaper articles and imagery from the late 19th and early 20th century depicted African American babies as alligator bait, a term that was also used as a slur for Black people.

President Donald Trump wants to be heavily involved in Republicans' midterm push. They're not all thrilled.
As Trump begins to unveilhis midterm campaign plans, many Republicans facing tough elections — even in areas the president carried by double digits in 2024 — are wary of tying themselves too closely to Trump as his approval rating continues to drag.
Many privately admit they're stuck in an uncomfortable spot: By running too far from Trump, Republicans risk alienating the MAGA faithful or the president himself, whose super PAC is sitting on more than $400 million they desperately need deployed to help them win key races. But if the candidates keep Trump close, they could be dragged down by the president, as the unpopular war in Iran has increased costs for Americans across the country.
So far, they haven't settled on a unified approach, according to interviews with more than two dozen GOP lawmakers, candidates and operatives. Mostly, they don't want to talk about it.
When asked in an interview if he wants Trump to campaign in his swing district this fall or spend time elsewhere, Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.) gave an indirect answer.

Coming off a memorable 21-7 hot streak out of the All-Star break, the Padres limped into September with a 2-7 mark in their last nine games. That recent slump has sparked restlessness among the Friar Faithful.
It has not been easy for Stammen to keep the Friars playing consistent baseball all season. He faces another challenge in seeking a path to a Wild Card berth.
Most of his upcoming decisions will not be easy, as they will center on the pitching staff. And Stammen's choices must put the team in position to win each night.
No question, the Friars have a reliable five-man starting rotation. Everyone is in relatively good health after early-season injuries nearly decimated the staff.

The San Diego Padres made it through much of the 2026 season with bubble gum and duct tape holding their starting pitching staff together. Michael King and Walker Buehler have been the only two constants in the rotation while other starters like Randy Vasquez, Griffin Canning and German Marquez, who is no longer with the team, have been used as starters and have worked out of the bullpen as a result of their struggles on the mound. The one constant for the San Diego rotation has been inconsistency.
Padres general manager and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller tried to address the rotation at the trade deadline. He went out and got arguably two of the top starters on the market in Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers and Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants. San Diego had to use some of what little capital it has left in the minor league system to make the additions, but the moves by Preller at the deadline were widely praised by MLB pundits and fans alike.
The additions of Mize and Ray could have been foreshadowing what was to come over the remaining months of the season. Starters Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta have each been working back from injury throughout the first half of the season. Musgrove has had a much slower rehab process recovering from Tommy John surgery following the 2024 season than was expected by much of the Friar Faithful. Pivetta went down early in the season and has slowly worked back to health and is pitching in various stages of the San Diego minor league system on rehab ****** ignments.
Musgrove and Pivetta have each had setbacks in their processes and it was revealed on Wednesday that Musgrove had another setback with arm soreness following his last rehab start at Triple-A when the El Paso Chihuahuas were in Oklahoma City. Pivetta pitched for El Paso as well and looked good considering the last time he was on the mound in Lake Elsinore he walked off the mound suddenly and did not return to the game. It was revealed later he felt some discomfort, but it turned out to be inconsequential and he threw additional pitches in a bullpen session that same day.

The Chiefs have nothing left to prove in the Andy Reid/Patrick Mahomes era. One could certainly pick apart the roster decisions of the past few years as being the reason the team stopped short of becoming a perennially dominant Pats-esque dynasty, but it's also unclear if that kind of lofty success is possible for any team in a modern NFL landscape where rookies are more pro-ready than ever before, and swelling salaries have made it very difficult to keep multi-superstar teams together.
This 2026 season feels like a new chapter for the Chiefs, while also the continuation of the same book they've been writing. It's the 15-page mini-chapter that ties up the story with a bow, and hopefully for the Chiefs faithful, has a happy ending.
Nobody is saying that Reid should retire after this season, but the stage is certainly set if he wants to go in that direction. For 14 years he's been the architect of one of the league's best teams, not simply in terms of the players on his roster, but in the staff he's ***** embled around him. Year in, year out, Reid displays an unnatural ability to put people in the right place at the right time — and it's this element of timing which makes it only right to ponder whether or not this is a pivot point for the Chiefs to make a switch.
A lot of this begins not with Patrick Mahomes, but Travis Kelce. A Hall of Fame lock, Kelce has achieved everything he could ever need to in the sport. Now there's undoubtably a personal aspect weighing on his future decision, with Kelce needing to decide whether or not he wants to suit up again after the 2026 season, or if he wants to take a step back and enjoy life with his wife. Kelce married Taylor Swift this past summer, maybe you heard about it? Not a lot of people really paid attention.
From a football perspective, Kelce can still go, but it's clear from watching him that the game is just more difficult for him now. The numbers are still there, but playing in the NFL no longer seems as effortless as it was for Kelce during his seven-season streak of 1,000-yard-plus receiving years. The veteran is slower in and out of his breaks, he doesn't stretch the field quite like he used to, and if you talk to legendary athletes, that's what often pressures them to hang it up. It's not good enough for the greats to simply succeed, rather the realization that succeeding is now a struggle that pains them. Doubt begins to creep in, and the critical confidence required to dominate on the field is slowly replaced with doubt. That feeling sucks, and many athletes choose to escape it as a result.

Over the past four years, Skylar has grown tremendously ‒ not only as a cheerleader, but also as a teammate and leader. Bayern Munich fans turned out to be quite a handful according to a recent ******* ysis on Reddit. German sports betting portal Wettfreunde scoured Bundesliga subreddits to evaluate fan behavior. The Bavarian faithful finished second behind rivals Borussia Dortmund in profanity. On the flip side, Paderborn's fans were both the best-behaved and the most positive.

Over 130,000 comments between August 2025 and August of 2026 were ******* yzed from subreddits to ******* s for vulgarity, politeness, negativity and positivity. And, the results are interesting for Bayern. Despite ranking second with nearly 10 percent of the comments containing swear words in German and English, it was negativity that took center-stage. The ******* ysis revealed a sheer lack in optimism among Bayern's fans with over 54 percent of the comments being negative in nature. Only Werder Bremen's supporters beat the Bavarians in this regard by a slim margin of 0.8 percent.
Let us cut to the chase here. Bayern has two major traumas in recent history. The first being injuries tanking the squad's ability in the business end of the season. Second being a run of premature exits from the Champions League. The number of times that Bayern has been the better side only to get shipped off due to missed chances, abysmal officiating or just poor luck has left its mark on the fans. The absence of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies due to major injuries, Thomas Müller leaving the club and a thin squad at the start of last season did not leave much room for positivity to start with.

Alonso sprang a surprise by naming Martinez in the starting line-up - less than four hours after his £7.5m move was confirmed by the club.

Which school has the most dedicated tailgaters — Iowa or Iowa State? According to one metric from a new survey, Hawkeye football fans come out on top... by 14 minutes. But Cyclones are close behind.
Casey's, in concert with naming its breakfast pizza the "Official Pizza of Noon Kickoffs" for the second straight year, commissioned a survey of students and alumni across its operating area to find out which schools' tailgates begin the earliest and last the longest. University of Iowa fans reported waking up at 7:58 a.m. on an average game day, while Iowa State University faithful said they sleep until 8:12 a.m. They trailed only Ohio State fans, who get up at 7:52 a.m.
Texas fans were the latest risers, rolling out at 9:04 a.m.
Iowa and Iowa State fans also were among the most committed to the parking lot parties, each spending an average of 2.9 hours tailgating. Indiana fans topped the sample of 1,201 fans at 15 large universities, spending three hours.
The two Iowa schools kick off their seasons Sept. 5, with Iowa State already playing two of its first three games at noon or before. Iowa's only morning game scheduled so far is the final one of the regular season at 11 a.m. Nov. 27 against Nebraska. Most of its start times, however, remain unannounced.

Real Madrid are expected to give Marc Cucurella his first start at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, with the summer signing in line to be the only alteration to Jose Mourinho's starting XI against Real Sociedad.
According to AS, Mourinho is not planning a major overhaul for Real Madrid's first home match of the 2026/27 La Liga season.
Instead, the Portuguese coach is expected to keep faith with a side close to his strongest available lineup, with Cucurella's introduction at left-back standing out as the key change.
The match could therefore offer the Bernabeu faithful their first proper look at one of the club's notable summer arrivals from the opening whistle.
Cucurella has already had his first taste of action in a Real Madrid shirt, coming off the bench against Espanyol, but Wednesday's clash against Real Sociedad is expected to mark his first start.

Gary Owen says he expects to be "100% faithful" to his new wife, Brianna Johnson, after openly acknowledging that he cheated during his nearly 18-year marriage to Kenya Duke.
During a VladTV interview, the 52-year-old comedian said the biggest difference between his two marriages is intimacy. Owen claimed that he and Duke had ****** only three times during the final six years of their marriage and said the prolonged distance between them contributed to his past infidelity.
Owen stressed that he was not trying to criticize Duke, describing the lack of intimacy as mutual and saying they had effectively become roommates. He contrasted that experience with his relationship with Johnson, saying he now feels both physically and emotionally connected to his spouse and looks forward to returning home to her.
