Liverpool have made a bizarre decision in light of Bradley Barcola's big-money agreement. It's one they might regret.
Liverpool finally clinched an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola on Thursday morning. It's a transfer saga that's gone on for months, with the Reds pivoting to the Frenchman after failing to land Yan Diomande.
PSG were never going to make this one easy, knowing full well what they had. Barcola may not have been in their best XI but he was absolutely the best available winger on the transfer market.
That led to an astronomical transfer fee and Liverpool are making the second-biggest deal in their history to land Barcola. It's far, far more than initially thought but the Reds didn't have much of a choice.
Especially as PSG were willing to let this go to the wire. They've barely budged at all in their price estimation and Liverpool finally accepted that they didn't have the bargaining power here.

NEW YORK — Defense is supposed to be George Lombard Jr.'s superpower, but the Yankees rookie is in the midst of a serious fielding slump.
The shortstop now has six errors in six consecutive games after booting a ground ball in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Astros. The bizarre streak continued on a bizarre play in the eighth inning, as Lombard, on the run, bounced the ball to and nearly collided with third baseman José Caballero, who then committed an error of his own when he airmailed a throw to first.
While it was Caballero's throw that allowed a run to score, it was Lombard's half of the play that drew attention after yet another mishap. Afterward, the frustrated 21-year-old acknowledged that he needs to "clean up" his defense, especially with the Yankees trying to catch the Rays for the division lead and fend off the incoming Red Sox for the American League's top Wild Card spot.
"I don't know. It's something you're trying to figure out," Lombard, who made just one error in his first 14 MLB games, said when asked why he's had such a tough time in the field lately. "Obviously, it's not acceptable. Can't happen at this level. If you make your pitchers have to get extra outs, it just makes it way harder on us."

One would be hard pressed to come up with a night of prep football as unquestionably exciting — and yet indescribably bizarre — as what went down Thursday around Albuquerque.
Legacy Academy and Hope Christian played a thrilling game at Nusenda Community Stadium, filled with one huge play after another. It was delayed twice — once for 35 minutes at the start by lightning, which in and of itself is not so strange given that it is still monsoon season.
It was also delayed once in the fourth quarter by lighting. Or a lack thereof. Hope eventually prevailed, 40-27.
At Wilson Stadium, Albuquerque High and Eldorado slugged it out for roughly three hours and 40 minutes — without any delays from the heavens — and were just about to begin a second overtime when the facility was emptied and the teams sent off the field because of lightning.
A little after 11 p.m., the teams decided there would be no more football, and it was declared a 43-43 tie, a rare thing in New Mexico prep football, since the rules are explicitly designed to have a winner and a loser in every game.

A former heavy smoker and user of several substances, Curry also suffered several health issues throughout his life. The line that ran hot was financial services and insurance, up 1.2% and the biggest single mover in the entire report. Cutting through the economist word soup, your advisor bills you a percentage of whatever you have parked with them, so when stocks went up in July, the pile got bigger, meaning your fees got bigger in dollar terms. On a purely statistical basis, the Bureau of Economic ******* ysis saw the S&P having a nice month and filed it under cost of living. It seems bizarre on its face, but it's also logically defensible as all that money really did leave real people's accounts. The BEA is rewriting the methodology on September 30 anyway, and it is worth noticing who benefits from a version of the index where Wall Street's take no longer counts.
Everything else behaved. Core inflation, the number the Fed actually steers by, came in exactly where the Street expected. Sunderland needed a moment of magic in their Premier League opener against Ipswich Town, and Nilson Angulo delivered exactly that.
Approaching half-time at Portman Road, the Black Cats were trailing the newly promoted side after an opening goal from Emersonn.

NEW YORK (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. passed his final concussion tests and the Toronto Blue Jays slugger is expected to return from the seven-day injured list on Saturday.
Guerrero returned to the team on Friday and took swings in the batting cage after doubling during a minor league rehabilitation game for Single-A Dunedin on Thursday.
"He felt good," manager John Schneider said before the Blue Jays opened a three-game series with the Yankees. "Even before he left to play in Clearwater, he was feeling good. He feels pretty normal, so that's a good thing."
Guerrero left a 3-1 win in Toronto over the Yankees last Friday after a collision with New York rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. on a bizarre play at third base in the sixth inning.

Belichick hasn't just been bad for North Carolina. He's been a national embarrassment. There was his bizarre interview with CBS before he ever coached a game. There's the persistent drama with Belichick's 25-year-old girlfriend, aka his "Muse," who's waged a crusade against the university. Then, Belichick's GM got placed on administrative leave. On Monday, the Red Sox were visiting the Toronto Blue Jays for a mid-August AL East series. With the Blue Jays up 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Red Sox were looking to get on the scoresheet with runners on first and third with one out. While the broadcast graphics clearly said there was one out in the top of the seventh, the center field scoreboard in Toronto incorrectly displayed that there were two outs when Ceddanne Rafaela was up to bat.
What then happened was complete chaos. Rafaela popped the ball up to center field, yet the two Red Sox runners started to run the bases like there were two outs, with Anthony Seigler running to home without tagging at third. Guardians starter Gavin Williams entered the sixth inning with a perfect game bid in tact. Diamondbacks center fielder Tim Tawa led off the sixth inning, and during that at-bat attempted to lay down a bunt.
That's where you'll find some differing opinions on whether that violated an unwritten rule in baseball. Some believe that if a pitcher has a no-hitter or a perfect game going, it should be respected, and you have to earn that first hit. This week, it is fair to say that I have been slightly obsessed with Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey. Without wanting to spoil anything (not that you can really spoil the plot of a story that originates from the 8th or 7th century BC), it focuses on the protagonist, Odysseus – one of the more cunning and intelligent Greek heroes who sailed to Troy to take part in the Trojan War, and the figure we would attribute the Trojan Horse to.
Nolan's adaptation focuses on Odysseus' hubris – where a figure believes they are above the rules, normal limits or consequences of their actions – and the subsequent aftermath. In Odysseus' case, he is faced with a dilemma. Is it worth sacrificing your moral core in order to be granted some supposed concept of glory?
The reason why I'm blabbing on about this is because of some of the, frankly, bizarre coverage I've seen regarding the Visitors and their current dilemma.
I don't want to retell it all at the risk of turning into some sort of Geordie Josh figure. However, the general gist is as follows: (Beh)Eddie Howe was restricted by unfair financial rules, designed by the "Top Six" mafia to protect their vested interests. Newcastle, a massive club, were never given a fair chance to succeed. As a result, the manager has had to resign because he couldn't possibly face the concept of developing young players with high potential in the Premier League. Their best players, like Claire Balding CBE and Sandro Tonali, have had no other option but to leave, being forced to go to undesirable places like Barcelona or London for more money.
Much like The Odyssey, it's all designed to pull at the heartstrings.

Liverpool are currently working on a deal for Bradley Barcola with Paris Saint-Germain. The big problem is that PSG want a sensational amount for their third-choice winger - around €180m, per reports.
The Athletic are among those quoting that figure. It's truly bizarre, really, as this would be the third most-expensive transfer of all time for a player who doesn't even start big games for his club.
Still, if that's who Liverpool want, that's who they want, and they'll be at least tempted to pay the money to get him. Even if they'll certainly attempt to talk PSG down a bit.
But this is really just a consequence of a crazy summer of spending. We've seen Elliot Anderson, a fantastic player but one without UEFA Champions League experience or anything beyond two years of good football, go for £116m.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — David Cifaldi and his two hiking companions were crossing Montana's ominous Froze-to-Death Plateau and approaching the top of the state's highest peak when their adventure took a bizarre and dangerous turn: Cifaldi slipped and impaled himself on his trekking pole as he fell.
The 44-inch (112-centimeter) steel-tipped pole passed through the flesh beneath Cifaldi's left arm, missing any vital organs, and protruded from his back. After conferring with his friends — and considering the high cost of a helicopter rescue — Cifaldi knew who would save him: himself.
"I was like, 'We've got to get off this mountain.' And they're both like, 'I don't know about that,'" Cifaldi said of his friends' initial reaction. "I'm pretty confident this is outside my chest wall. 'Tis but a flesh wound."
The 32-year-old nurse, who works in wound care at a hospital in Billings, Montana, did a self-assessment. He was alert. There was little pain or blood. And the pole wasn't moving. The group used a satellite-based communication device, a Garmin inReach, to contact local authorities and inform them of their plan to self-rescue.
Then they started hiking out. They carefully descended from the plateau along an unmarked route, navigating through boulders and snowfields before bushwhacking their way to an established trail.

July 28 (Reuters) - EBay and three former top executives have agreed to pay $55.7 million to resolve a lawsuit by a Massachusetts couple who fell victim to a bizarre stalking and harassment campaign carried out by several of its employees in retaliation for their coverage of the e-commerce company in a newsletter they publish.
David and Ina Steiner announced the settlement late on Monday, bringing an end to a case they filed in 2021 in Boston federal court after several former eBay employees were prosecuted for targeting them in a cyber-stalking campaign that involved sending the couple ****** roaches, fly larvae and a ****** Halloween pig mask.
As part of the settlement, eBay agreed to pay $46.15 million to the couple; fund $6 million in charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations; and issue a "strongly-worded" statement about the conduct of three of its top former executives.
"We believe this resolution sends a clear message that corporations and their executives cannot engage in this type of misconduct without facing significant consequences," Christopher Murphy, the Steiners' attorney, said in a statement.

July 28 (Reuters) - EBay and three former top executives have agreed to pay $55.7 million to resolve a lawsuit by a Massachusetts couple who fell victim to a bizarre stalking and harassment campaign carried out by several of its employees in retaliation for their coverage of the e-commerce company in a newsletter they publish.
David and Ina Steiner announced the settlement late on Monday, bringing an end to a case they filed in 2021 in Boston federal court after several former eBay employees were prosecuted for targeting them in a cyber-stalking campaign that involved sending the couple **** roaches, fly larvae and a **** Halloween pig mask.

The first real controversy of the 2026-27 U of L athletics season hit about a month before a Cardinal team played a contest that counted.
On Tuesday, the Louisville men's basketball team played an exhibition game in the Bahamas that fans had no ability to watch or listen to. I wasn't happy about it, you weren't happy about it, ******* ody was happy about it.
The immediate result of that annoyance, as it typically is, was people trying to figure out who they should blame. There were fingers pointed at Josh Heird, the ACC Network, ESPN, U of L's marketing department, and bizarrely at one point, Tim Henderson. Ok, the last one might have been made up, but every other entity on that list received their fair share of not so friendly fire over the last two weeks or so.
Following his team's 101-52 trouncing of Bahamas Raw Talent on Tuesday, Pat Kelsey wasted no time in accepting full blame for fans having to spend their afternoons staring at an updating box score.
"I'm well aware that people are upset that we didn't stream it," Kelsey said. "All I can do on the back end after we made that decision is apologize. Probably, looking back and seeing how passionate everyone is about it, probably should have done it. But everything this summer was just about doors closed, blinders on, let's grow as a team. Let's get better. It's been about us and business."

After several years as one of ESPN's most visible personalities, hosting the 6 p.m. SportsCenter and anchoring WNBA Finals coverage, Elle Duncan departed the Worldwide Leader to become the face of Netflix's growing sports venture. She's also been tabbed to lead USA Network's studio coverage for its WNBA broadcasts.
On Monday, Duncan appeared on The Sports Gossip Show podcast and discussed the ever-prevalent and increasingly bizarre coverage surrounding Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. Over the 2026 WNBA All-Star Weekend, Clark sat down with ESPN's Malika Andrews and discussed how "emotionally exhausting" the constant coverage surrounding her can be.
"I feel like media and journalism have a responsibility to tell the stories," Clark told Andrews, "and a lot of the time you guys are the ones controlling the narratives about what people read and what people talk about. And a lot of that is sometimes so far out of touch with what is reality."
Although Duncan doesn't believe Clark is at fault for how far out of control things have spun, she wants to see the three-time All-Star take more ownership of the situation.
"I would love for it to be very clear to the people who think they are her fans but are using her, if she would say, 'stop that sh*t, I don't want it, I'm tired of it.' As opposed to what we've seen, which is 'the media makes up these narratives, the media makes up this discourse.'

Add one bizarre injury to the San Francisco Giants season.
Harrison Bader was headed to Indianapolis to meet with a foot and ankle specialist for his left plantar fasciitis that sidelined him for two months on Monday, but ran into a bit of trouble late-Saturday, early-Sunday morning.
Bader, 32, was involved in a scooter accident in San Francisco, the team announced, which further injured the outfielder's sore left foot. He will have an MRI "to better understand the severity of the injuries sustained from the scooter accident," the Giants said.
Bader still made it to Indianapolis to meet the specialist on Monday, but the accident complicated the meeting.
"Reached out to him, asked him if he was OK. Obviously he's not better than he was prior to that," manager Tony Vitello said. "It's going to delay the recovery process for him, but even prior to it, you're looking at a pretty frustrating long runway."
