NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be officially sanctioned during the ongoing second Test against India in Colombo, adding another disciplinary flashpoint to a match that had already been marred by the ugly confrontation between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando.
Jayasuriya was on Tuesday handed an official reprimand and one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day's play of the Colombo Test.
The left-arm spinner was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match".
It was Jayasuriya's first offence in a 24-month period, the ICC said.
"Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has become the third player to be sanctioned for an incident during the second ICC World Test Championship contest against India after he was hit with an official reprimand following his dismissal in his side's first innings," the ICC said in a statement.
The incident involving Jayasuriya occurred with the final delivery of the second day's play on Monday.
The Sri Lanka spinner was adjudged leg-before wicket off India spinner Manav Suthar. As he walked back towards the dressing room following his dismissal, Jayasuriya struck the boundary wedges with his bat.
The action led to the charge under Article 2.2, with Jayasuriya subsequently admitting the offence and accepting the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
As Jayasuriya accepted the sanction, there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
The one demerit point has now been added to Jayasuriya's disciplinary record.
Jayasuriya's sanction comes after Jaiswal and Fernando were both punished following their heated exchange on the opening day of the Colombo Test.
The incident took place in the 17th over of India's first innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India opener walked towards the Sri Lanka pacer and the two exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal.
Jaiswal then leaned in, resulting in their heads making contact.

We caught up with Thomas at Le Bar, his private café and creative **** e located just a few blocks from the Gallery Dept. store on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. The room doubles as a gathering spot for artists and creatives to make music, host listening parties, and trade ideas, and it is lined with posters, artwork, and pieces pulled from Thomas's personal archive. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) has launched a national security review of Shein's acquisition of clothing retailer Everlane, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources.
The Treasury-led interagency panel began scrutinising the transaction after the $80m deal was finalised in May 2026.
Shein itself initiated the review process at that point—a departure from standard practice, since companies usually obtain CFIUS approval before a deal closes rather than afterwards.
The central question is whether Shein's ownership of a business holding US consumers' personal data poses a threat to national security.
No outcome has yet emerged from the review.

The 53-year-old star of The Office appeared at the For The Love of Fantasy and Sci-Fi convention at Excel London on Saturday to talk about Shaun of the Dead, the 2004 zombie comedy in which she played Dianne.
It was her first public appearance since announcing on Aug 11 that she had incurable stage-four cancer that had metastasised to her bones since a diagnosis a year and a half ago.

Tottenham Hotspur fans would have been expectant of great things coming into this season. Roberto De Zerbi had the squad performing admirably at the conclusion of last season as the club narrowly avoided relegation, and a strong preseason campaign combined with a flurry of activity in the transfer market seemed to herald a new dawn for the North London club. Instead, Spurs looked all at sea in their opening match of the 2026/27 season, crashing to a 3-0 defeat as they were dominated in all facets by a buoyant Brentford side.
Spurs' starting XI was much as expected, in line with the side De Zerbi had used in preseason accounting for absences due to World Cup duties, fitness, and injury. Mikey Moore made his second Spurs start on the right wing while Archie Gray captained the side, lining up at right back. He rounded out a new-look backline, with Gray, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson making up the back four. Keith Andrews named a strong side of his own, with new signing Mamadou Sangare lining up in midfield for Brentford and no room for Mikel Damsgaard, such was the quality of Brentford's other attacking options.
The first half was all Brentford, with Spurs looking all at sea. The home side nearly opened the scoring early via a set piece, as Andy Robertson's defensive header deflected narrowly over the crossbar, before Nathan Collins couldn't direct a header of his own on target. The chances kept coming for Brentford, as Keane Lewis-Potter easily beat Archie Gray to deliver a cross that was fortunate to not be directed by Jan Paul van Hecke into his own goal.

It wasn't long before Brentford doubled their lead. Richarlison's pass back to Bergvall was loose with the Swede then too casual taking the ball in possession, losing out to Mathias Jensen. The Dane ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and Antonin Kinsky made a meal of it, seemingly misjudging the direction of the shot as he reached back across his body to make the save. The Czech keeper succeeded only in palming the ball out to Vitaly Janelt who finished comfortable from close range. Spurs were stunned, and Brentford took a 2-0 lead into the half.

The home side nearly opened the scoring early via a set piece, as Andy Robertson's defensive header deflected narrowly over the crossbar, before Nathan Collins couldn't direct a header of his own on target. The chances kept coming for Brentford, as Keane Lewis-Potter easily beat Archie Gray to deliver a cross that was fortunate to not be directed by Jan Paul van Hecke into his own goal.
Brentford finally made their domination count. Mamadou Sangare played a one-two with Dango Outtara, as both Lucas Bergvall and Andy Robertson failed to track the run of the Malian midfielder. Outtara squared simply for Lewis-Potter, who was open on the penalty spot for essentially a tap-in.
It wasn't long before Brentford doubled their lead. Richarlison's pass back to Bergvall was loose with the Swede then too casual taking the ball in possession, losing out to Mathias Jensen. The Dane ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and Antonin Kinsky made a meal of it, seemingly misjudging the direction of the shot as he reached back across his body to make the save. Italy U21 star Michael Kayode was on hand to send Brentford 3-0 up against Tottenham Hotspur in their first Premier League game of the 2026-27 season, piling more misery on Roberto De Zerbi in the Spurs dugout.
Kayode was in the right place at the right time to get a leg to the ball from the second phase of a corner to put Brentford 3-0 up against Tottenham three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium.

In addition to bringing the national department closer to the players' day-to-day routine and the work of the coaching staff and the health and performance departments, the visits are also aimed at observing training facilities and competition matches.

On August 13, Stratasys (NASDAQ:SSYS) held its second-quarter earnings call, and the headline number was consumables revenue hitting a record $66.3 million. For a company trying to prove it has moved beyond selling prototyping machines into recurring, production-grade manufacturing, that record matters more than the top line itself. But underneath the record sat a cash flow warning that investors will want to weigh carefully.
Aerospace and defense is Stratasys's largest business, and it grew 17% year over year in the second quarter. Management pointed to expanding adoption across the U.S. Air Force, where the company's F900 system is certified for flightworthy production parts, describing the orders as increasing in volume across the Air Force's sustainment enterprise rather than one-time purchases. Once a part is qualified on a Stratasys platform, switching suppliers becomes costly, which is the basis for calling this demand structural. Stratasys Direct, the company's parts manufacturing arm, grew 12.1% year over year, fueled by defense technology customers building drones and munitions.
The quarter also delivered two large multiyear systems deals. Quickparts expanded its relationship with Stratasys by purchasing 12 Neo 800-plus systems on top of six units it already owned, with three of the new systems placed in Europe. FAW Group, one of China's largest auto manufacturers, signed for 12 F900 systems by year-end, with two shipped in the second quarter, adding to five F900s and eight other Stratasys machines it already runs to make interior parts like armrests and panels. Stratasys was also awarded a two-year, $7.8 million program through the 2026 America Makes OIB Modernization Challenge to develop monitoring technology for its F900 and F3300 platforms. Layered on top is the pending $42.5 million cash acquisition of MarkForged, whose continuous carbon fiber technology generated about $70 million in revenue in 2025 and which management expects to add positively to EBITDA within a year of closing.
System revenue fell to $26.4 million from $30.6 million a year earlier, meaning machine sales are shrinking even as the recurring materials business grows. Gross margin slipped too, with non-GAAP gross margin at 47.2% versus 47.7% a year ago, which the company attributed largely to a stronger Israeli shekel raising costs incurred in that currency. GAAP net loss widened slightly to $16.9 million, compared to $16.7 million a year ago, though GAAP loss per diluted share improved slightly to $0.19 from $0.20.

DENVER (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday temporarily halted a court order that would have granted thousands of athletes who left college after last season an extra year of eligibility.
The lawsuit was filed by players who graduated high school in 2022, whose college eligibility ended last season and who were not included in the NCAA's new rule that grants most players five years of eligibilty, beginning next season.
After winning a ruling in district court, many of those players were trying to figure out how to return to their former schools to play another year.
This ruling, by a 2-1 margin from a panel on the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals n Denver, puts that on hold until the appeal can be heard in total. It could tamp down on the chaos from a series of similar rulings in courts around the country that led to players trying to come back before the start of college football season.

On the hottest of summer days, a natural gas "peaker" usually kicks in to support the wave of air conditioning units turning on at once. It's the electrical grid's lifesaver, a turbine built only for the highest-demand hours of the year, and also one of the most expensive to run. It's what made 7 p.m. electricity so expensive in different parts of the U.S in the first place.
But a shift is taking place. California and Texas are now turning to batteries to power their grids. Power units that were typically used simply to store energy are now being deployed as power sources themselves. California's grid operator has at least 13,000 megawatts of battery capacity, enough to serve several million homes through evening peak hours, and Texas' batteries already power up to 10% of the state's grid at peak.
Electricity customers see the benefits. When batteries set the marginal price instead of gas turbines that cost two to three times as much to run, wholesale power gets cheaper during the hours it used to be most expensive. Gas peakers that already sat idle for more than 86% of the year will eventually lose the few remaining hours that kept them viable, and utilities will likely choose batteries over new gas plants long term.
Unlike gas turbines, batteries don't generate electricity on their own. They move it from the hours when it's cheapest to the hours when it's most valuable. Solar panels flood the grid with power in the middle of the day, pushing wholesale prices close to zero and sometimes below it. Batteries absorb that cheap surplus. When the sun sets and demand surges past what the remaining generation can deliver, they discharge into the gap that gas peakers once filled, offering to do it at a lower price.
In California, the cycle has run at a scale large enough to reshape the wholesale market. In 2024, across the California Independent System Operator's territory, batteries provided an average of 8.6% of all electricity consumed during the highest-demand evening hours, keeping the lights on in roughly three million homes. By 2025, they were regularly delivering more than 6,000 megawatts at peak, six times the roughly 1,000 megawatts they managed three years earlier.

China flooded the world with cheap solar panels a decade ago, driving Western competitors out of business. It did the same with electric vehicles, prompting tariffs from Washington and Brussels. In 2025, the pattern repeated with batteries. Chinese manufacturers who had built twice as many factories as the world needed slashed prices to keep them running, pushing stationary storage packs down to $70 per kilowatt-hour, 45% cheaper than the year before. The decline was steep enough to reshape what power companies pay for electricity during the most expensive hours of the day.
Chinese overbuilding was the biggest single force behind the price collapse, but it wasn't the only one. A shift toward cheaper battery chemistry, a crash in lithium prices, and a decades-long accumulation of manufacturing improvements all hit at the same time, each amplifying the others. On its own, any one of those forces would have pushed prices down gradually. Their convergence is what turned a steady decline into a collapse.
Cheaper batteries are good news for electricity costs and for the climate. But the conditions that made them possible are unwinding. Lithium prices have already rebounded, and the tariffs designed to counter China's trade practices are adding new costs of their own.
Chinese battery manufacturers spent the early 2020s building factories at a pace that ***** umed electric vehicle demand would keep surging. It worked for a while. By 2024, China produced enough battery cells — the basic units that store electricity and power electric vehicles — for every car sold on the planet that year. But global manufacturing capacity far outstripped what anyone needed. At roughly 2,600 gigawatt-hours, the world's factories could supply every battery the market demanded and still have enough idle capacity to outfit nearly every home in America with its own storage system.
Even as the surplus became apparent, manufacturers kept adding capacity through 2025. The world's battery factories nearly doubled their capacity to more than 4,000 gigawatt-hours of cells a year — more than four times what the market actually bought — with China accounting for more than 80% of the total.

A shift toward cheaper battery chemistry, a crash in lithium prices, and a decades-long accumulation of manufacturing improvements all hit at the same time, each amplifying the others. On its own, any one of those forces would have pushed prices down gradually. Their convergence is what turned a steady decline into a collapse.
Cheaper batteries are good news for electricity costs and for the climate. But the conditions that made them possible are unwinding. Lithium prices have already rebounded, and the tariffs designed to counter China's trade practices are adding new costs of their own.
Chinese battery manufacturers spent the early 2020s building factories at a pace that ***** umed electric vehicle demand would keep surging. It worked for a while. By 2024, China produced enough battery cells — the basic units that store electricity and power electric vehicles — for every car sold on the planet that year. But global manufacturing capacity far outstripped what anyone needed. At roughly 2,600 gigawatt-hours, the world's factories could supply every battery the market demanded and still have enough idle capacity to outfit nearly every home in America with its own storage system.
Even as the surplus became apparent, manufacturers kept adding capacity through 2025. The world's battery factories nearly doubled their capacity to more than 4,000 gigawatt-hours of cells a year — more than four times what the market actually bought — with China accounting for more than 80% of the total.

CAIRO (AP) — Palestinians face inflated prices for groceries and batteries, hospitals have turned to smugglers for medicine and equipment, Israeli soldiers and other middlemen are accused of pocketing millions of dollars, and the Hamas-led government takes a cut as the smuggling of goods restricted by Israel into the Gaza Strip has boomed, according to an ******* ociated Press investigation based on court documents and interviews with traders, truckers and officials.
Cigarettes and tobacco — banned from entry to Gaza since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 — rake in the biggest profits for smugglers and merchants, officials and residents say. But everything from iPhones and solar panels to fuel and anesthetics are also brought into the tiny coastal territory illegally. Israel restricts quantities of some goods and bans others outright. It defines many as "dual use" — including concrete, vehicle parts and X-ray machines — ******* erting they could be repurposed by Hamas militants for military functions.
To build a picture of the illicit trade, The ******* ociated Press ******* yzed Israeli court documents and spoke to five major traders who import smuggled goods, three merchants who sell them, and two truckers — all on condition of anonymity because of their roles in the illegal smuggling business and concerns about their safety in Gaza. AP also interviewed four Palestinian officials, two on condition of anonymity because of worries about retribution from Israel, Hamas or merchants; two U.N. officials, on condition of anonymity over concern for their jobs; and a dozen Palestinian residents, who spoke about how they get everyday items and their skyrocketing costs.
AP found a rush from all sides to profit off the tight restrictions imposed by Israel on Gaza and its 2 million residents, most of whom have been displaced by the war. Smuggling rings — which have long flourished, circumventing two decades of Israeli blockades and building a network of businessmen and collaborators — pull in millions of dollars. Payoffs go to Israeli troops, drivers, warehouse workers and others on both sides of the border, according to traders and court documents.
"The occupation has left no other option before us. Smuggling has become routine," one trader said, noting that some in Israel's military are willing to help — for a price. "We benefit, they benefit and the people in Gaza benefit because we provide goods, including food, to the market."

Burnley have signed Feyenoord defender Anel Ahmedhodzic for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal.
The 27-year-old Bosnia international joined the Dutch side from Sheffield United last summer and made 35 appearances in all competitions.
He is Burnley's seventh summer signing as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League this season.
"I've played at Turf Moor against Burnley before and it's always been a really good atmosphere, I'm excited to call it home," he told the club website.
He could feature for the Clarets in Sunday's Championship trip to West Bromwich Albion.

During an episode of the High Performance Racing podcast alongside host Jake Humphrey and former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley, Szafnauer discussed the standout drivers he has encountered during his career in the paddock.
When Humphrey prompted the panel to name the greatest drivers they had worked alongside and competed against, Szafnauer named four-time champion Sebastian Vettel as the best driver he had worked with before turning his attention to the fiercest rivals he had faced while on the pitwall.
"Greatest I worked with, Vettel. Greatest I went up against, tough either Michael [Schumacher] or Lewis [Hamilton]," Szafnauer explained.
When asked why he didn't consider four-time champion Verstappen, he added: "Well, I don't think Max is at his peak yet. I think he's going to get better."

A sharp rise in oil prices brought on by the Iran war has stoked inflation worries, prompting markets to wager on rate hikes, while also exerting pressure on the Indian rupee.
The panel had voted unanimously to keep the policy repo rate (INREPO=ECI) unchanged at 5.25% on August 5, while retaining its monetary policy stance at "neutral".
India's headline consumer inflation remained well within the central bank's 2-6% tolerance band at 4.45% in July. The Reserve Bank of India has a 4% medium term target.
While there are limited signs of inflation becoming generalized so far, headline inflation does appear to be normalizing "from its benign levels seen hitherto," RBI Chief Sanjay Malhotra said in the minutes.
