AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Marty Whims II got to experience the joy and frustration of being the offensive coordinator for a Football Bowl Subdivision team on Saturday.
Unfortunately, it lasted for only four plays.
Akron was moving the ball on its first possession against Robert Morris when wide receiver Marcel Williams fumbled at the Colonials' 37-yard line. David Johnson recovered the ball after Tasheen Howard and Jake Lopinto forced the fumble.
"We moved the ball, got some first downs. I thought we were going to get a touchdown if we didn't fumble," Whims said shortly after his OC stint ended.
Whims got to call plays as part of Akron's "Offensive Coordinator of the Game" for its home opener. The 46-year-old Whims — a longtime season-ticket holder — graduated from Akron and is the chief financial officer for Stark Enterprises.

When Iowa landed Tony Diaz from University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, there was immediate hype and intrigue about what he could bring to this Iowa offense. There was the fact that he lead FCS freshman in receiving. There was the fact that he had a late Alabama offer in the portal. Mainly though, it was about just trying to inject some life in the Iowa passing game that has been missing for some time.
In his debut, Diaz was targeted 15 times and ended with seven catches for 84 yards and a touchdown – the most of any WR in their debut during the Ferentz era (for some context, DJK had zero catches in his 2007 debut and Mo Brown's 102-yard game in the 2002 Akron opener wasn't a debut — he had three catches across 2000-01 before it. RVZ is a close second with 5 catches for 65 yards and a freshman record 2 TDs in his debut back in 2024).
Also in those targets were two third down pass interference calls to keep drives alive. Oh, and don't forget about the other two likely touchdowns he would have scored on passes that were just off target.
This is now my 13th year of charting Iowa's passing game and through my data the most targets for an individual wide receiver during that time (Sam LaPorta, TE, was targeted 17 times vs Illinois in 2022). Iowa's Offensive Coordinator, Tim Lester, used ****** e and traffic to help free up Diaz giving him an opportunity to make a 1-on-1 catch or an opportunity to catch the ball in ****** e and use his quickness to create yards after the catch (55 of his 84 yards were YAC).
This is a look at the route trees for Diaz on his seven receptions and two defensive penalties. Diaz recorded 46 snaps on the day with 31 of those being lined up out wide and 15 lined up in the slot.

It was a game of firsts for Caleb Bacon. Not only was it the first game of 2026, but also Bacon's first game as a Nittany Lion after transferring from Iowa State, as well as his first game as a full time defensive end since switching from linebacker.
It's safe to say all the changes worked out for Bacon, as he was named the Big Ten's Co-Defensive Player of the Week for week one. Bacon made an immediate impact in his Nittany Lions debut, collecting three TFLs, a sack, and six tackles in the first half alone against Marshall. The Thundering Herd had difficulty handling Bacon, as he constantly provided pressure and wreaked havoc in the backfield whenever he was on the field. Bacon even had a sequence with consecutive TFLs as he helped to shut down an early drive by Marshall as the Nittany Lions defense held them scoreless throughout the game. It was Penn State's first shutout in a season opener since blanking Akron in 2017.
Bacon shares the honor with UCLA's Ta'Shawn James, who had two interceptions to help lead the Bruins to a victory over Cal on Saturday.

The Warriors (1-0), ranked No. 1 in the Beacon Journal's Power Poll heading into Week 2 after a season-opening rout of Highland, had to cancel their home opener against Springfield (Clark Co.) late last week after an outbreak of an illness in the Springfield program.
Now Walsh will face a strong test when it hosts Toledo Central Catholic (2-0), a 2025 Division III state runner-up that started the season with wins over Trotwood-Madison (27-9) and Portage Central (24-14).

Before long, we're going to be talking about multiple Texas A&M baseball products earning their first call‑ups, and two Aggies who are making that conversation unavoidable are Gavin Grahovac and Jace LaViolette. Both have been on a tear, but Grahovac's recent jump in production has been especially hard to ignore.
Grahovac is getting better with every at‑bat. His slugging percentage has climbed more than two hundred points since early August, a sign of how consistently he's driving the ball right now. He's seeing pitches cleanly, staying balanced through contact, and flirting with a .300 batting average after extending his hit streak to six games two of those being multi‑hit performances.
The power showed up in full force on Tuesday. Grahovac went yard twice, pushing his season home run total to five through just fourteen games. His overall line reflects a player trending sharply upward slashing .286/.392/.571 with 18 hits, 10 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and a .963 OPS. He's impacting the game in every phase hitting for average, hitting for power, getting on base, and creating pressure with his speed.
If he keeps this pace, it won't be long before we see the official announcement that he's been called up. Everything about his current trajectory points in that direction.
Texas A&M's all‑time home run leader Jace LaViolette continues to punish baseballs in the minor leagues, even as he adjusts to the jump in competition at the Double‑A level. The promotion came with a few expected speed **** ps, but the one thing that hasn't wavered is his elite power. Through 11 games with Akron, he's already launched three home runs, reminding everyone why he's considered one of the most dangerous young hitters in the system. LeBron James, the newest star for the Philadelphia 76ers, gained plenty of attention when he launched a YouTube channel focused on golf in August. If that wasn't enough of an indication, James is apparently far more into the sport than expected. He continued to put his love of the sport on display Tuesday, when it was announced James had teamed up with the PGA Tour to bring a new golf event to his hometown.
The LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational will be played in Akron, Ohio, in 2027, per ESPN. The inaugural event will occur July 6 through July 7 and be played at the South Course at Firestone Country Club.
The event will be focused on helping kids see the benefits of golf. The LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational will feature "amateurs and pros from the tour's Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five program," per ESPN.
In a statement, James talked about the ways the sport can open doors and build relationships.
"Golf has become a passion of mine, and I've seen firsthand how the game can open doors, build relationships and create opportunities that many kids don't even know exist," James said in a statement. "This partnership with the PGA Tour gives my foundation a chance to introduce my I Promise students and more people to the game at a young age, support talented athletes chasing their dreams, and continue investing in the city of Akron that means everything to me."

LeBron James and the PGA Tour have teamed up to announce the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational, a two-day event at Firestone Country Club for underrepresented aspiring golfers.
The experience will connect students in the LeBron James Family Foundation's I PROMISE program with professional golfers who advanced through the PGA Tour's Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five program.
The inaugural event is scheduled for July 6-7, 2027. Firestone Country Club recently hosted its final Kaulig Companies Championship, which is moving to Newport Beach, California. Firestone had a 72-year run of hosting a PGA Tour event, notably the Bridgestone Invitational that Tiger Woods dominated for much of the 2000s and 2010s.
"For many years, PGA Tour events at Firestone have been a staple of our community, benefitting our hometown and bringing people together," said Michele Campbell, executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation. "With this event, we're excited to not only support more diverse golfers getting into the game, but to also expose our I PROMISE students and more youth in Akron to the world of possibilities that golf opens up."

Xxavier Thomas was the No. 11 overall recruit from Pennsylvania in the 2025 class when he committed to Penn State. Despite his relatively high recruiting ranking, he only received offers from Penn State and Akron. Thomas committed to Penn State in December of 2023. He redshirted in the 2025 season and appeared in one game.
Thomas is a talented cornerback, but Penn State is certainly not lacking for talent in the secondary. He is not likely to see much playing time this season with the talent and experience ahead of him on the depth chart, but he should be able to contribute on special teams and potentially as a reserve. He should compete for a starting spot in 2027 after Audavion Collins and Zion Tracy graduate.

Browns coach Todd Monken said after practice he did not have an update on Wright.

Ohio high school football teams kick off the 2026 regular season this week.
For Greater Akron, the action begins Thursday, Aug. 20, when Garfield travels to Norton and Archbishop Hoban plays at West Orange (Fla.) in nonconference games. For the rest of the area teams, the season opens Friday, Aug. 21, with a loaded slate of games.

Guadalajara made the most of the superiority it showed on the field at TSM and claimed a 1-0 win over Santos on Matchday 4 of the 2026 Apertura. With this victory, the Rojiblancos picked up 3 important points that allow them to keep climbing the standings.
True to their style, the Rebaño Sagrado took the field intending to impose their conditions from the opening whistle. Gabriel Milito's side pushed their lines forward to create danger in the final third. Despite going into halftime scoreless, Guadalajara maintained its intensity and never stopped looking for the opener.
That persistence paid off in the second half. Santiago Sandoval made a great play inside the box, where he feinted and shook off his marker to draw a foul that led to a penalty. Ricardo Marín took responsibility from the spot and converted to score the goal that gave Guadalajara the win in the Comarca Lagunera.
Guadalajara's next match will be at home. On Saturday, August 22, they will host Tijuana at AKRON Stadium, where they will look to earn another win in front of the entire Nación Rojiblanca.
