SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State secured its first win of the season with a 48-14 drubbing over FCS Lindenwood on Saturday, Sept. 12. In the win, the Bears still suffered some key injuries.
During head coach Casey Woods' press conference, he gave an update on the health of his roster on Monday, Sept. 14.
Linebacker Dylan Dixson is set to undergo neck surgery and will miss the season. Dixson did not feature against Lindenwood. His injury did not stem from one particular play, according to Woods.
"I hate that for him and it's something that we will have to fight through," Woods said. "Dylan has had kind of a lingering issue. We did some more research on it and felt like this was the time to correct it."

On Aug. 27, 18-year-old Addisyn Baird was in Hartford, Connecticut, preparing to play in a hockey tournament when she received a life-changing phone call.
The call was from Justine Siegal, commissioner of the Women's Pro Baseball League (WPBL). The Los Angeles Queens needed another player after one of their outfielders left to play for Curaçao's national team and the team wanted to sign Baird as a replacement for the remainder of the season.
"How fast can you get here?" Siegal asked.
The next morning, Baird played in one hockey game. Then she and her dad jumped in the car and drove more than 20 hours to Springfield, Illinois, where the WPBL plays all its games. On Sept. 3, Baird made her professional debut for the Queens, whose roster includes former Little League World Series phenom Mo'ne Davis.
Baird is the only current high school student playing in the inaugural season of the WPBL, which launched in August with four teams. The WPBL playoffs are underway this month, with two best-of-three semifinal series preceding a best-of-five championship series scheduled to begin Sept. 16.

With the points race secured on Saturday, Sunday's American Flat Track Springfield Mile II SuperTwins race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds was simply riders racing to win.
For Davis Fisher, it was a chance to gain momentum for his 2027 campaign.
Fisher put his KTM 790 Duke motorcycle past Australia's Tom Drane by just 0.009 seconds to win the season finale, his first win since 2021.
"We had seven podiums this year, (but winning) feels great," Fisher, of Warren, Oregon, said. "Going into Springfield, the team worked as hard as they could. They knew what we had and said, 'It's up to you.'
"How we finished (Saturday, fourth place), it was kind of hard on me, but coming on top in the last race of the season, feels pretty good carrying it into next season."

San Antonio will likely have to wait another year for playoff baseball.
The Missions' playoff chances took another major hit after the team dropped five of six games at the Springfield Cardinals last week. San Antonio is 24-33 in the second half of the season, nine games back from Texas League South leader Amarillo.
Mathematically speaking, the Missions are still in contention for a playoff spot. But, they would likely have to win all of their remaining 12 regular season games (six of which are against Amarillo) and get some help from Midland and Corpus Christi, which are currently ahead of them in the division standings.
"We're gonna use these two weeks to obviously try to win games, but also prepare for what (we) need to do to be in a good spot to come back for next season," Missions manager Chris Tremie said.
The Missions are 2-8 in their last ten games and entered Saturday's game on a seven-game losing streak, matching their longest one this season. San Antonio snapped the losing streak on Saturday with a 6-2 win over Springfield before dropping the series finale on Sunday.

Midfielder Toby Ritzema headed the home side in front after 20 minutes following a cross from winger Sammy Henia-Kamau.
And Ritzema netted his second eight minutes later after being put through, slotting home past Ashford keeper Liam Allen.
Bulls defender James Carr was sent off for a second yellow card after 34 minutes and teammate James Sunley followed him five minutes later after being shown a straight red card.

The Walsh Jesuit football team will not play its home opener Friday, Aug. 28.
Walsh's athletics Twitter account posted the following message at 8:58 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27:
"The home opener vs. [Clark County] Springfield High School has been cancelled due to illnesses within Springfield's program. They have decided to forfeit the game.
"For those who purchased tickets in advance, please note that our athletic department will be issuing refunds in the coming days."

Aaron Marsh, an Eastern Kentucky football standout who became one of the school's first Black student-athletes and later played for the Boston Patriots, died Aug. 7 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. He was 81.
Marsh spent two seasons (1968-69) in the American Football League — the Patriots' last years in the AFL prior to the NFL merger. He played 16 games at wide receiver under head coaches Mike Holovak and Clive Rush. The Patriots played their home games out of Boston's Fenway Park in Marsh's rookie year before moving to Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass. in 1969.
In 16 games, Marsh caught 27 passes for 439 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed four times for eight yards. As a kickoff returner, Marsh racked up 210 yards on 10 returns over his two seasons with Boston (the franchise rebranded as the New England Patriots prior to the 1971 season).

Marsh was born July 27, 1945, in Dayton, Ohio, and attended Springfield High School. He enrolled at Eastern Kentucky State College in 1964 and played for coach Roy Kidd. Marsh spent his first two seasons at tailback before moving to wide receiver for his final two seasons in college.

Two former Tennessee women's basketball players were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame at its annual enshrinement ceremony Aug. 14-15 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Former Lady Vols Chamique Holdsclaw and Candance Parker were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Two other former Lady Vols were also enshrined as members of the 1996 U.S. Women's National Team, including Nikki McCray-Penson and Carla McGhee.
"The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to welcome the Class of 2026, a group that reflects the very best this sport has to offer." said John L. Aug. 16—SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Fifteen years before Gonzaga transformed into an undisputed college basketball power, the small Jesuit university in Spokane made a brief flicker on the national stage with a standout point guard from a high school just down the street.
Gonzaga Prep's John Stockton captured WCAC Player of the Year in 1984, earned all-conference honors in consecutive seasons and was selected 16th overall by the Utah Jazz in the 1984 NBA draft. Chances are you know the rest of the story.
Stockton's Naismith Hall of Fame induction call came in 2009, six years after the NBA's all-time ****** ists leader wrapped up a distinguished, record-setting career with the Utah Jazz and 25 years removed from his final game in a Zag uniform.
But would the point guard ever have company in Springfield, Massachusetts? The odds of another Gonzaga induction always seemed low. Lightning usually doesn't strike twice for a midmajor school in a small-market city like Spokane, but Stockton was always willing to make room if somebody else ever came along.
"It's unbelievable and special. What are the chances?" Stockton said Friday, 24 hours before Gonzaga coach Mark Few officially joined him in the pantheon of college and professional basketball as a newly enshrined Hall of Famer. "You look back 30, maybe 40 years ago and you would've never thought any of this could happen. So it's pretty exciting for all of us."

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Recent Kickapoo graduate Vincent Mhire might have been known locally for his skills on the basketball court, but he is even better known in sports media.
Just a few years after picking up a professional camera for the first time, he now boasts over 40 thousand followers on Instagram (vinnyflics) and creates hype videos for nearly every high school in the Springfield area. It all started with an injury called mallet finger.
"So I was going to be out for the next three months. And in that time, especially during the summer, there's these things called AIU tournaments. They're basketball, like summer leagues for high school players and stuff like that," Mhire said. "All my friends were in those and I couldn't play. So, I decided to go and like, just go with them to those tournaments. And I don't know what caused me to do this, but I started filming videos on my phone."
Mhire as he works a golf tournament in the United Kingdom in May of this year.
After realizing he had a true passion and some skill for videography, he leaned into building his brand. All while continuing to keep up his grades and play basketball, something that he feels gives him extra insight.

Two weeks ago, Akron announced that a fan will script the opening offensive drive for the team's home opener against Robert Morris. To enter, the fan must be a season ticket holder.
Akron's season ticket sales have erupted, with many high-profile people throwing their hats into the ring. The Zips also announced that 40% of its season-ticket sales have come after the promotion was announced.
When asked if Missouri State could do something similar, Woods laughed, throwing shade at offensive coordinator Mark Cala.

Now they are forever bonded, enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class Saturday night. They were joined by the 1996 U.S. Olympic women's basketball team, Chamique Holdsclaw, NBA player Amar'e Stoudemire, longtime NBA official Joey Crawford, NBA coaches Doc Rivers and Mike D'Antoni, and Gonzaga coach Mark Few.
Delle Donne turned her speech into a love letter to the game of basketball with all the ups and downs she faced in her career. But she always kept life in perspective, thanks to her older sister Lizzie, who is blind and deaf.
"She never played in front of thousands of people, never had a standing ovation. never been interviewed after a big win. Yet I've never met anyone stronger," Delle Donne said, choking up. "Thank you all for keeping me going."
Delle Donne won MVP awards in 2015 and 2019, the second of which came when she led the Washington Mystics to their lone WNBA championship. Delle Donne became the first player in league history to shoot more than 50% from the field, 40% from behind the 3-point line and 90% from the free-throw line.

The Lady Vols recorded the worst winning percentage in program history at 16-14 last season, which ended with an eight-game losing streak. All eight returners entered the transfer portal following Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell's second season, and Caldwell had to rebuild her entire roster.
Holdsclaw, who led the Lady Vols to three straight national championships during her career from 1995-99, was asked for her perspective on the state of the program a day before the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement for the 2026 class on Aug. 15 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
