Spain stumble against Cape Verde, Belgium slip up against Egypt, and Uruguay can only manage a 1:1 draw against Saudi Arabia: yesterday's World Cup day had plenty of surprises in store.
As there was also a 2:2 draw between Iran and New Zealand later in the evening, another historic milestone was reached as well.
It was only the second time in the nearly 100-year history of the World Cup that four matches on a single day ended in draws. The last time this oddity occurred was in 1958.
At the tournament in Sweden, however, there were a whopping eight matches in one day, which makes the total of four draws seem far less impressive.
So who knows what would have happened if there had been four more games yesterday. Perhaps eight draws?

Barcelona’s long-term investment in Hamza Abdelkarim continues to look increasingly promising after the young forward achieved a remarkable milestone on football’s biggest stage.
As such, after appearing in the tournament opener against Belgium, the 18-year-old became the youngest player ever to represent Egypt at a FIFA World Cup.
The teenager was introduced in the 75th minute of Egypt’s 1-1 draw and immediately entered the history books.
It marked another important chapter in what has already been a rapid rise for one of Barcelona’s most exciting young prospects.
After arriving from Al Ahly earlier this year, Abdelkarim has wasted little time making an impression both at club and international level.

The FIFA World Cup produced a rare piece of history on Monday after four matches ended in draws on the same day.
It was the first time that had happened at the tournament since June 15, 1958, according to The Athletic.
The sequence involved Spain, Cape Verde, Egypt, Belgium, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iran and New Zealand.
The run began when Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw in Atlanta.
That result was notable because Cape Verde are making their World Cup debut, while Spain entered the tournament as European champions and one of the highest-ranked teams in the world.

If there was any doubt that Seattle is a soccer city, today’s official World Cup kickoff put them to rest.
Egyptian fans were dancing in the street on Monday afternoon, celebrating a 1-1 draw with Belgium.
Seattle stadium was packed with 66,775 fans in attendance, leaving less than 200 empty seats.
“The Emerald City” is welcoming fans from around the world and Seattleites say they’re impressed by the soccer transformation, especially along the waterfront.
“People are going to get to see a lot of the beauty of Seattle when they walk up and down here,” says Molly.

Iran coach after opening draw with New Zealand: 'Our team is the most oppressed in the whole World Cup' originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – They went home neither as winners or losers, but the point is, they went home. (Sort of.) That was not the plan for Iran’s national soccer team following their World Cup opener Monday night, but planning seems to be the most elusive ingredient of their participation in this tournament.
The bus with IR Iran across the side was waiting for the team inside LA Stadium following the 2-2 draw with New Zealand that left both tied atop Group G, ahead of Belgium and Egypt. The players, at one point, had anticipated that vehicle would return them to the hotel where they spent the night before this matchup.
Instead, they were ordered to return to their base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, immediately following the postgame activities: the mixed zone where players complained to reporters, the press conference where head coach Amir Ghalenoei again shared his frustration with the world.
“We don’t know why they’re returning us, to be honest,” Ghalenoei said through an interpreter. “It’s very strange. It seems like others are doing the planning for us. We were supposed to come in two nights before the game, and they didn’t permit it, and we were supposed to stay here tonight and recover. Our team is, perhaps, the most oppressed one in the whole World Cup.”

After a blistering weekend of games, the FIFA World Cup returned on Monday with action kicking off across the United States. The tournament has served up some thrillers so far, and the fifth matchday was no exception.
This was the type of matchday where you could predict the winners just by looking at the fixture list. Except that’s not what happened. Teams with fewer resources, fewer star players, less World Cup pedigree, the types of teams not ‘expected’ to win, fought back and gave the favorites a ****** nose.
Spain, Belgium, Uruguay, Iran. One of these is a favorite for the ****** le. One is at the tail end of a golden generation of talent. One is a South American powerhouse. One, despite being beset by political headwinds, still boasts a strong reputation on the Asian continent. They were the favorites, the ones meant to get ‘easy’ wins. Turns out nothing is that easy.
Football is supposed to be the people’s game, but the upper echelons are dominated by the elite. Nothing symbolizes that more starkly than the existence of this tournament. The FIFA World Cup is meant to be a showcase of that upper tier, the very best of the best.
However, this matchday shows that there is still ****** e for the little guy, if only to act as a spoiler.

Romelu Lukuku shrugged off fitness concerns to help spare Belgium’s embarrassment as they fought back for a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening match of the World Cup in Seattle.
Lukaku, his country’s record goalscorer, was introduced in the 66th minute and within seconds was involved in the move that saw Mohamed Hany prod in an own goal to bring the two-time semi-finalists back on level terms.
Egypt had started brightly and ******* ed the lead in the 20th minute when Emam Ashour lashed the ball past Thibaut Courtois from the edge of the box to give his side hope of a first ever win at a World Cup finals.
Belgium looked flat-footed for much of a first period in which they failed to fashion a shot on target, and the African side looked more likely to add to their lead with Mostafa Ziko bringing a fine save out of Courtois on the half-hour mark.
The Red Devils stepped up the pace after the interval and came close to a leveller when Kevin De Bruyne lashed a free-kick against Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir’s right-hand post after a foul on Jeremy Doku.

Belgium and Egypt drew 1-1 in their World Cup opener on Monday after a second-half Belgian equalizer spoiled Mohamed Salah's 34th birthday.
Emam Ashour opened the scoring early in the first half in Seattle, before Romelu Lukaku came off the bench after the hour to force Egypt's Mohamed Hany into an own goal.
With the draw, seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions Egypt's wait for a first victory at a World Cup goes on.
This is their fourth participation in the global showpiece and with Group G fixtures to come against Iran and New Zealand, they will hope to break that hoodoo in North America.
For Belgium, this tournament is likely the last chance for the remnants of their golden generation to better their third-placed finish in Russia eight years ago and finally win silverware.

Mohamed Salah led Egypt out in what is highly likely to be his last World Cup, and the winger put in a confident captain’s performance. Though Egypt will be disappointed to have conceded an own goal to allow Belgium to equalize midway through the second half, Salah can be pleased with his team’s performance.
The man himself played the ***** ist for Emam Ashour’s confident goal just before the 20th minute, Salah also created the joint most chances (3) across his 75 minutes on the pitch. The former Liverpool player is currently without a club as rumors swirl following Arne Slot’s departure that his time on Merseyside might not quite be done — though the rumors, which seem to have come from the Egypt camp, have been challenged by Mo Salah’s.
Though the romance of Salah retiring as a Liverpool player is strong, the finances behind the kind of overhaul Liverpool require make it challenging to see how his wage packet could be accommodated even if a dramatic U-turn would be possible. Though Salah was far from the absolute star of the show in Seattle on Monday afternoon, his energetic and central performance certainly suggested he has playing years left in the tank. There are sure to be mixed opinions on this one.

SEATTLE — Egypt will have to wait a little longer for its first World Cup win. Despite going up early against Belgium to kick off Group G play, the Red Devils were able to ****** back an equalizer against the Pharaohs after forcing an own goal in the second half.
Monday afternoon’s game marked the first World Cup match in Seattle Stadium (normally Lumen Field), with the matchup setting up a packed, red-decked crowd — the color of both team’s primary jerseys.
Eye test-wise, more of those red dots were Belgian fans. But the Egyptians were louder — and that was before Emam Ashour gave Egypt a 1-0 lead with a blast from outside the box in the 20th minute.
That unlocked something in the Egyptian fans in the crowd, who were overjoyed about going up early against a European giant. Belgium’s attack kept going throughout the end of the first half and into the second, but kept falling just short of a goal.
As it turns out, that last push came in the form of Romelu Lukaku, who subbed into the game in the 66th minute and forced an own goal from Mohamed Hany 20 seconds later.

SEATTLE, June 15 (Reuters) - Belgium’s Jeremy Doku is due to become a father for the first time while the World Cup is still on, and wants to be at the birth, creating a potential dilemma for the team.
The 24-year-old winger is one of the key elements of the Belgium side who open their World Cup campaign against Egypt in Seattle on Monday, and plans for him to leave the United States and return home for the birth of his child are being put in place, Belgian media reported.
Doku told reporters his wife Shireen is due in the second week of July, when the tournament has reached the quarter-final stage, and if Belgium are still involved, he wants to be at the birth.
“It depends on when it happens, but it's my first child, so I would definitely want to be there,” he said.
“If you ask me what I want, my answer is that ******* ody wants to miss the birth of their first child. But I also know that football involves many other considerations.

Turns out, there is a cure for the "Monday blues."
It comes in the form a quartet of FIFA World Cup games on June 15, which will see eight more teams play for the first time in the tournament. That includes tournament favorite Spain and all eyes will be on the status of Lamine Yamal, who continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Monday's action will also see the World Cup runs begin for Belgium and Egypt, two of the more experienced teams with no shortage of veteran talent. That doesn't extend to Uruguay, who are set to begin World Cup life without Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani – something that will give a new-look to the country's squad after a long run with those two stars.
The day will also see the return of New Zealand for the first time since 2010, Cape Verde make its World Cup debut and Iran play on American soil about four months after the country became involved in a war with the United States.
So who does artificial intelligence (AI) have winning? We asked Microsoft Copilot to make score predictions for every game and give a reason to stand behind that pick.

Belgium will be seeking to upset the odds and claim a historic victory at the 2026 World Cup in likely the final international tournament for Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
The Napoli pair are amongst a handful of players who remain from the core of the side widely considered as their country’s golden generation, and could go out on the highest of highs on football’s biggest stage.
Going off of FIFA’s world rankings, which Belgium had topped for almost half a decade until March 2022, they should have been in with a chance of having already won it, but failed to ever deliver on their promise at a major tournament.
But with Lukaku now 33 and De Bruyne one year his senior, it’s probable they’ll both have called time on their international careers by the time the World Cup arrives in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain in 2030.
The Red Devils are aiming to bounce back from an abysmal showing in Qatar in 2022, where they failed to progress from the group stage – a stark contrast from their third-place finish in Russia four years prior.

We’re a week away from the World Cup, and it’s the biggest ever edition of the most prestigious competition on the planet, with 48 nations battling for the trophy a month from now at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Group G has one country that believed it would be vying for a trophy of its own these past few cycles, but hasn’t reached its full potential.

Pulisic finds form before World Cup as US beat Senegal 3-2
Christian Pulisic ended his goal drought and Folarin Balogun rifled in the winner as a much-improved United States beat Senegal 3-2 in a pre-World Cup friendly in Charlotte on Sunday.
The win -- and a slick first-half offensive performance powered by Pulisic and Ricardo Pepi, before multiple substitutions disrupted the game -- provided a welcome lift for coach Mauricio Pochettino's co-hosts.
The US had entered the clash with African powerhouse Senegal off the back of disappointing losses to Belgium and Portugal, and got the performance they needed to justify high expectations ahead of the World Cup in less than two weeks.
Sergino Dest opened the scoring, while Senegal's veteran ex-Liverpool forward Sadio Mane scored a brace in a disappointing loss for the Africa Cup of Nations finalists, which nonetheless exposed some enduring frailties in the US defense.
It was a dream start for the US, with a goal on six minutes that began with striker Pepi, making his first US start since 2024.

These Neanderthals May Have Eaten Their Enemies
At least 41,000 years ago, a grizzly scene may have played out in dark limestone caves located in what’s now Belgium. Neanderthals appear to have feasted on their own species, according to the remains of more than six individuals that were unearthed at an archaeological site called the Troisième Caverne. The victims included four adolescent or adult females and a young male, according to a recent paper published in Scientific Reports. This adds to decades of evidence that Neanderthals sometimes craved the taste of their own kind.
