Some relied on archival fashion, while others arrived in custom creations designed specifically for the occasion. Together, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amal Clooney, Rooney and Kate Mara, Robert Pattinson, Suki Waterhouse and Pamela Anderson demonstrated just how varied festival dressing can be.
Jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal established a sophisticated tone with several dramatic black looks. I say that fully aware that the New York Film Festival has a more relaxed dress code than Cannes, Venice, London or even Toronto. The individual elements are here, but nothing is working together for me.
I can see the hybrid idea he was going for: part old-Hollywood leading man with the striped shirt, tie and waistcoat, and part relaxed, contemporary dressing with the wide-leg tan trousers and rolled-up sleeves. But those two ideas never quite meet in the middle.

I've been enjoying the collection's striped pieces on the red carpet, but I like that Alex didn't recreate the runway styling. The all-black palette puts the focus on the proportions, which is what makes this work for me.
Cassie opted for a Magda Butrym wool corset dress, and this is easily my favourite part of their couple's style moment. The precise darting and padded hips create that exaggerated hourglass silhouette the designer does so well, and you know I love a well-executed exaggerated silhouette.
The dress is so good that the shoes frustrate me even more. The bronze pointed-toe pumps with criss-cross ankle straps feel disconnected from the modernity of the silhouette. A pewter strappy sandal or mule would have been a much stronger finish and allowed the dress to have the final word.

The Grammy-winning musician, son of Beatles rocker John Lennon and singer-songwriter Yoko Ono, revealed he welcomed his first child with partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl in a social media post Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Sean Lennon, 50, shared a photo of the couple cradling their newborn son, who was dressed in a striped, black-and-white onesie. The birth also marks the first grandchild for the late John Lennon, who was fatally shot in 1980. Ono has two grandchildren from her daughter, Kyoko Chan ******* , whom she had with film producer Anthony ******* .
"[Charlotte] and I have created a human bean!" Sean Lennon captioned the post. "His name is Aurelius! Thank you!"
Sean Lennon met Muhl, a musician and model, in 2005 while attending the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The couple started dating in 2007, according to People magazine. The pair have collaborated on several musical projects over the years, including the psychedelic pop band The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.
