EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon had gone an entire season without conceding a goal in the run of play. Rutgers needed four minutes and eleven seconds of the second half.
Amanda Thornton scored from the middle of the box off her right foot at 49:11, and that was the match. Rutgers beat Oregon 1-0 on Thursday at Papé Field in front of 673 to open Big Ten play with a win, and it did it while being outshot 20-16, out-cornered 8-1 and outshot on target 10-3. Olivia Bodmer made eleven saves and did not concede. Thornton's goal was the only shot Rutgers put on target in the second half.
Rutgers arrived at 1-1-3 with a week's rest and its first win of the season in the books, a 4-2 win over Princeton at Yurcak Field on Sept. 6 in which the Scarlet Knights surrendered the lead twice and won anyway. Lilia Calvert scored twice in four minutes after the 80th, the first two goals of her college career, on the only two shots she took. Ashley Baran and Sophia Stiles had the others. Three of the four goals came after the 70th minute, the stretch of the game this team could not survive eight days earlier against Providence. For the conference slate, Rutgers was picked 15th of 18 in the Big Ten preseason poll after missing the NCAA tournament last season for the first time since 2011.
Oregon was picked 18th, and arrived at 5-0-1.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jonah Tong will return to the big leagues on Monday and the New York Mets intend to keep the right-hander in their rotation for the final weeks of the season.
Tong will start in Miami against the Marlins, and the 23-year-old could be in line to pitch in next weekend's Subway Series at Yankee Stadium as part of a young rotation that includes Nolan McLean, Christian Scott and Zac Thornton.
"I just can't wait for that," Tong said Sunday before the Mets concluded a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants.
Tong is rejoining the Mets as the club's No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, after going 5-6 with a 4.54 ERA in 23 starts for Triple-A Syracuse and allowing two runs in his past 21 1/3 innings. He was 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his last 10 starts, combined on a no-hitter on July 30 and came within one out of finishing a seven-inning no-hitter on Aug. 29.
"He's had a good run here recently and we want to see him build on it," interim manager Andy Green said. "So I think we're excited to see it, and I think we'll continue to hand him the ball throughout the rest of this year. We're not going to make a secret of that."

Florida football came into the season opener against Florida Atlantic relatively healthy. While Saturday night's result was ideal, the Gators are now dealing with a few injury concerns to follow heading into Week 2.
Wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. suffered an unconfirmed injury during the game, while defensive backs J'Vari Flowers and Bryce Thornton also appeared to be shaken up at different points. Zac Thornton entered today's game with a 2.93 ERA in 11 starts. It's been quite the surprising season for the rookie lefty, who has managed those impressive topline numbers despite boasting less than flashy stuff and underlying peripherals. Alas, those topline numbers look a little bit worse after today's game, as Thornton underwent his worst start as a major leaguer, and the Mets were not able to work themselves out of the hole he put them in, resulting in a 9-5 loss to the Giants.
San Francisco struck within minutes of the game's start, as Rafael Devers socked Thornton's fourth pitch of the afternoon over the right field wall for a one-out solo homer. The Mets answered back in the bottom of the second when A.J. Ewing—who has been struggling mightily in the second-half—socked a two-out, two-run homer off Giants starter Anthony Molina. That gave the Amazins a 2-1 lead, but unfortunately they would not hold it for long. Thornton surrendered a lead-off single in the third inning, followed by a two-run blast to Christian Koss to put the Giants back in front.
Thornton went on to retire his next eight batters, right up until Koss—who entered today's game with just one homer this season—came to the plate again in the top of the fifth, and he hit his second home run of the afternoon. Not to be outdone, Devers came up two batters later following a single and socked his second home run of the day. Thornton surrendered one hit—a double from Bryce Eldridge, the fourth straight two-out hit of the inning—before finally retiring the Giants, but it was now a 6-2 ballgame.
Meanwhile, the Mets's bats did little against Molina after Ewing's homer (that hit in fact remained the only one surrendered by the Giants through six innings). Both teams went to their bullpens in the sixth inning—albeit with Molina's final line looking a lot better than Thornton's ugly one (5 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, 6 runs). Chris Devenski was the first reliever up for the Mets, and he did his job by tossing two scoreless innings. The bats finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Francisco Alvarez struck out swinging for the second out, but the Mets then finally got another run on the board when Brett Baty walked to bring in a run and make it 6-3. Alas, the potential tying run was stranded, as Francisco Lindor grounded out to first to end the threat.
And the Giants quickly acted to make sure the Mets would not continue to claw their way back into the game. Jefry Yan took the mound in the top of the eighth and issued a one-out walk to Eldridge, followed by a two-run homer from Osleivis Basabe. That made it 8-3, but San Francisco still wasn't quite done. Justin Hagenman pitched the ninth, and just like every non-Devenski Mets pitcher of the day, he surrendered a homer—this one a one-out solo shot for Grant McCray. That made it six dingers for the Giants, in case you weren't keeping count.

Earlier this week, TMZ broke the news that Sony Pictures Television Studios had suspended the announcer, revealing to the media outlet, "We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation."
Per TMZ, the alleged incident occurred when a passenger complained to a flight attendant about Thornton on a commercial flight in May. American Airlines confirmed to TMZ, "On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard."

On August 5, Clover Health Investments Corp. (NASDAQ:CLOV) reported second-quarter 2026 results that turned a year-ago loss into real profit. GAAP net income came in at $28 million, a $39 million swing from the $10.6 million loss posted in the same quarter last year. Medicare Advantage membership climbed to 157,309, up 48% year over year, and the company raised its full-year guidance across every major line item. For a stock that has spent years chasing profitability, this quarter reads like a turning point.
The headline number is the $28 million in GAAP net income for the quarter, but the six-month picture tells the same story with more weight behind it: $55.3 million in net income through the first half of 2026, compared to an $11.9 million loss over the same stretch last year. Revenue reached $743.2 million in the quarter, up 55.6% year over year, and consolidated gross profit rose 53.6% to $153.0 million. Adjusted EBITDA more than doubled, jumping 139.2% to $40.9 million from $17.1 million a year earlier, which means profitability is scaling faster than revenue itself.
Clover backed those numbers by raising its 2026 outlook on every front. Full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance moved up to $70 million to $85 million from a prior range of $50 million to $70 million, and GAAP net income guidance rose to $20 million to $35 million from $0 million to $20 million. The company also closed the quarter with $443.0 million in cash and investments, up 13.8% year over year, giving it room to keep funding growth. The same filing shows that scaling a Medicare Advantage insurer is not cheap. Insurance net medical claims incurred rose 56.1% year over year to $615.4 million, tracking almost in step with revenue growth. Ferguson largely played a vertical receiving role in 2- and 3-TE sets as a downfield receiver in disguise. His average depth of target was 17.9 yards downfield. Only Tyquan Thornton, Alec Pierce and Kyle Williams were targeted more downfield!!! That will boggle the mind. Fast-forward to this year, the Rams need better talent at "WR," and Ferguson could be the answer based on what he provided last season. Davante Adams was dangled in trade discussions open to the public after a down season beyond the goal line, and trading for Tutu Atwell on Aug. 27 is never a great sign for the rest of the room. There's a chance (25%) that Ferguson is viewed as the team's WR3 this season. McVay's done crazy things like this before with Puka Nacua, Cooper Kupp, Kyren Williams, Blake Corum and 3-TE sets. — Hayden Winks

The 3x3 league co-founded by former UConn women's basketball greats Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier continues to thrive as the premier offseason domestic league for WNBA stars.
For the second straight year, Unrivaled will feature eight clubs when its third season tips off in January 2027 (official schedule not released yet). The league announced 46 of its 48 roster spots this weekend, with the final two players to be named later. Next season's roster features six former Huskies and five former Connecticut Sun stars.

On September 1st, major league rosters expand to 28-players, and tomorrow the Mets are reportedly calling up right-handed pitcher Justin Hagenman and right-handed outfielder Nick Morabito.
The plan for Hagenman is to have him start on Wednesday against Tampa Bay, giving an extra day of rest to the Mets' young trio of Christian Scott, Nolan McLean, and Zac Thornton heading into the weekend series with the Giants.
Hagenman appeared in nine games for the Mets in 2025, starting one game, and did not pitch vey well, putting up a 4.48 ERA over 23.2 innings. Hagenman fractured a rib during spring training and has been on the shelf all year. Wednesday's start will be only his fourth game of the 2026 season, getting one rehab start in St. Lucie, Binghamton, and Syracuse, giving up home runs in two of those games.

Monday afternoon, a day after having officially announced all their cuts, the Raiders made another move. The team announced that WR Dont'e Thornton will head to injured reserve.
Thornton has been injured through much of camp and for several weeks now head coach Klint Kubiak has said he expects Thornton to return soon. First he expected he would be back during the preseason, and then on Friday, he said this about the second-year receiver.
"He's still working to come back from an injury, working really hard at it too. And that's part of football, injuries are part of football, and he's straining to get better to get back on the field."
Thornton's exact injury is not known. They certainly haven't known the severity of it up to this point. But it seems like this was the plan yesterday when he made the roster.
With the roster cuts, the one unexpected one was LB Segun Olubi. The special teams maven was the one player on my 53-man roster projection who was cut. And now we see why. Because the plan was to then turn around and sign him back. Only a risk if Olubi wanted to go elsewhere because he wasn't subject to waivers as a vested veteran.

Four Tennessee women's tennis players earned a spot on the first singles and doubles rankings of the season, which were announced Tuesday by the ITA.
The Lady Vols totaled three entries, including one singles player and two doubles teams.
Sophomore Rinon Okuwaki is ranked No. 40 nationally. She enters her first season with the Lady Vols after a freshman campaign at Clemson. A native of Saitama, ******* an, Okuwaki began her freshman season with the Tigers by winning her first 16 matches. She lost her first match on April 3 to North Carolina's Reese Brantmeier, who was ranked No. 2. Okuwaki finished her first collegiate season as the ITA's No. 72 ranked player with a 19-6 singles record.

NEW YORK (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers rookie Cooper Pratt certainly got the message sent by manager Pat Murphy on Tuesday night.
Loud and clear.
Murphy, the two-time defending National League Manager of the Year, benched Pratt after he failed to get a bunt down and didn't run hard out of the batter's box on a bloop single during a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets in 10 innings.
"I've got to be better," Pratt said. "It's not winning baseball. I didn't help the team win and it won't happen again, that's for sure."
Batting ninth, Pratt was asked to bunt after Garrett Mitchell and Joey Ortiz opened the third with singles against Mets starter Zac Thornton. Pratt fouled off Thornton's first pitch and then pulled back his bat on the second one, a fastball right down the middle.

After taking two of three from the Atlanta Braves, the team with the best record in the NL East, the Brewers will now head to the Big Apple to take on the worst team in the NL East.

Thornton has been good at limiting runs (3.04 ERA) and sports a solid 1.15 WHIP, although his underlying numbers paint a somewhat less flattering picture. On the rubber tonight for the visiting team will be Kyle Harrison, who went five shutout innings against the Mariners last time around. At a key time in the fantasy baseball calendar, we are unfortunately saddled with possibly the worst two-start pitcher group of the season. In fact, once we get past the top option, every other hurler may be best left for those in deep formats. On the hitting side, managers should load up on Rockies for the first half of the week.
Zac Thornton, Mets, 20% (vs. MIL, vs. HOU): Thornton continues to establish himself as a reliable major league rotation member and now sits at 3-4 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.13 WHIP after nine starts. The rookie struck out seven Padres in his most recent outing, which is a great sign from someone whose only weakness thus far has been an inability to accumulate whiffs. He unfortunately has a pair of matchups against top-10 teams in OPS versus righties, but at least both starts will take place at his pitcher-friendly home park.
Andrew Alvarez, Nationals, 7% (vs. COL, vs. MIA): Although Alvarez has enjoyed his best stretch of the season during August (2.42 ERA, 0.90 WHIP), the advanced stats (16:8 K:BB ratio, .169 BABIP) don't back up his success. In fact, the left-hander's strikeout rate this month (6.5 K/9) is notably lower than his season-long mark (8.3). Alvarez deserves credit for consistency, as he has allowed more than three earned runs in just one of his 19 appearances. However, most of his outings last less than five innings. He has reasonable matchups and the two-start options are poor this week, which makes him worth consideration as a low-floor, low-ceiling option in deeper formats.
Max Scherzer, Blue Jays, 6% (vs. KC, vs. SEA): After enjoying three consecutive strong starts, Scherzer faltered (4 IP, 7 ER) last time out. The outing wasn't quite as bad as the stat line indicates, as a pair of misplayed fly ***** by Jesús Sánchez ruined the right-hander's chances. Scherzer wouldn't normally rank as a viable two-start option, but he has had enough success of late to warrant consideration for two home starts against teams that rank 22nd (Royals) and 30th (Mariners) in runs scored.

Lugo has favorable matchups this week, as the Blue Jays (28th) and Guardians (26th) sit near the bottom of baseball in runs scored. That's the only reason to select him over those who trail him on this list.

But on Tuesday night, San Diego had a superhero of its own — and it wasn't Peter Parker. For Mets fans, he was more like a supervillain. Fernando Tatis Jr. put on a performance worthy of the big screen, blasting two home runs and robbing a grand slam as the Padres defeated the New York Mets 5-2 at Citi Field.
The superstar right fielder wasted no time putting his superhero act on display, crushing the first pitch of the game from left-hander Zac Thornton 452 feet with an exit velocity of 113 mph for his 14th home run of the season. The 452-foot homer was Tatis Jr.'s fourth home run of at least 450 feet this season, leading the majors.

The Mets dropped the middle game of their three-game set with the Padres, 5-2.
The Mets' string of good luck somewhat dried up tonight, although starter Zac Thornton gave them a perfectly cromulent start, five inning performance, allowing three earned runs on two home runs, while striking out seven and walking just one. Thornton has bent but not broke in many of his starts thus far, and this start continued that trend.
In fact, if Thornton had been able to control Fernando Tatis Jr., his start would've looked quite different. Tatis drilled two home runs in the first five innings, driving in three runs and putting the Padres up ahead enough that he didn't need the insurance runs provided by his teammates. But alas, Tatis has woken up his bat in the second half, and Thornton was on the other side of that tonight.
The sole Mets' offense came from solo home runs from Luis Torrens and Luis Robert Jr. The Torrens renaissance continues, and while Robert is more than likely not a Met next season, it's nice to see the Mets producing up and down the lineup. Bo Bichette collected two hits, and first baseman [checks notes] Christopher Morel collected one hit as well. But aside from a few walks, that's all folks.

The Mets' string of good luck somewhat dried up tonight, although starter Zac Thornton gave them a perfectly cromulent start, five inning performance, allowing three earned runs on two home runs, while striking out seven and walking just one. Thornton has bent but not broke in many of his starts thus far, and this start continued that trend.
In fact, if Thornton had been able to control Fernando Tatis Jr., his start would've looked quite different. Tatis drilled two home runs in the first five innings, driving in three runs and putting the Padres up ahead enough that he didn't need the insurance runs provided by his teammates. But alas, Tatis has woken up his bat in the second half, and Thornton was on the other side of that tonight.
The sole Mets' offense came from solo home runs from Luis Torrens and Luis Robert Jr. The Torrens renaissance continues, and while Robert is more than likely not a Met next season, it's nice to see the Mets producing up and down the lineup. Bo Bichette collected two hits, and first baseman [checks notes] Christopher Morel collected one hit as well. But aside from a few walks, that's all folks.

The Mets didn't have enough offense to keep up on Tuesday night, falling to the San Diego Padres, 5-2.
New York's four-game winning streak came to an end with the loss.
-- It didn't take long for New York to go down 1-0 as Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a no-doubt, first-pitch home run off rookie Zac Thornton. Tatis then showed his defensive skills in the second inning, robbing Francisco Lindor of a grand slam for the third out.
The star's big night continued in the top of the fifth inning, blasting a two-run homer off Thornton to make it a 3-0 game.

Thanks to a flurry of injuries, the Carolina Panthers have big needs in their wideout room, along their offensive line and off the edge—and that's before you get to any of the roster holes they had going into training camp.
But some think the Panthers should go in a different direction if they add free-agent help before the 2026 season begins.
According to Moe Moton at Bleacher Report, the reigning NFC South champs should be interested in signing veteran defensive back and former Indianapolis Colt Kenny Moore II as an upgrade for the slot corner position.
Moton writes:
The Carolina Panthers should look for an upgrade at slot cornerback. Chau Smith-Wade has manned the position for two seasons, and undrafted second-year pro Corey Thornton is his only competition for that role... Turning 31 in a couple of weeks, Moore should have at least one more optimal year left in his playing career. He's a Band-Aid option at a weak spot in the Panthers' secondary.

On the day the Mets honored the 1986 championship team, the 2026 Mets highlighted their dissimilarity to that squad in a 6-2 loss to the Marlins at Citi Field. Despite a shaky start from Zac Thornton, the game remained close until the middle innings thanks to a Tyrone Taylor homer that got the Mets back in it, but Daniel Duarte had his first truly poor outing out of the bullpen this season to give the Marlins some cushion in a game that featured a lot of names we are going to see a lot more often in the final couple of months of the season after the trade deadline.

The Indianapolis Colts' ownership group joined in on the ALS ice bucket challenge that is making its way around the NFL. In the post shown on social media, Carlie Irsay Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson participate in the challenge in response to a league-wide challenge brought forth by the Tennessee **** ans' front office.
The **** ans' franchise brought the league into the challenge, as they continue to raise awareness for ALS research following the diagnosis of Chris Johnson in June with the illness.
Dumping the ice buckets was receivers coach Reggie Wayne, vice-president of team engagement David Thornton, and Colts' mascot, Blue. Thornton shared a moment to acknowledge Johnson, and show support for his ongoing battle with the disease.
"CJ2K, Chris Johnson; we love you, the whole Colts' family is behind you."
Moments later, Jackson announced that the organization will be donating $10,000 to ALS research in support of Johnson's fight.
