No. 8 LSU beat Louisiana Tech 45-14 on Sept. 12, but the Tigers led just 10-7 at halftime. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt threw three interceptions in the game a week after the 51-10 rout of Clemson.
LSU coach Lane Kiffin said because the No. 8 Tigers (2-0) face No. 11 Ole Miss (2-0) on the road next on Sept. 19 (6:30 p.m., ABC), it might not have been such a bad thing that they struggled some vs Louisiana Tech.
"It was good because of that," Kiffin said of facing Ole Miss next. "We're getting ready to go on the road in the SEC vs a really good team that has played really well for years at that place.
"It was good because it's hard to get their (LSU's) attention after last week ... I'm glad it happened."
Ole Miss coach Pete Golding and the Rebels will go up against Kiffin less than one year after Kiffin left before the College Football Playoff.

Lake Travis' matchup against Cibolo Steele ended in an abrupt 28-28 tie Friday when inclement weather swept through the area. Lightning was spotted within 10 miles of Lehnhoff Stadium with 4 minutes and 43 seconds left in the third quarter, leading to the initial weather delay.
After approximately 30 minutes, officials ruled the game a tie; the weather's severity had increased, and parts of the stadium lost power.

Lake Travis quarterback Jason Carter, backed up to his own 15-yard line on the opening drive, hit wide receiver Luca Antoun over the middle. A record-breaking performance capped by a game-sealing tackle led Auburn safety Eric Winters to a weekly award.
Winters was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after his Week 1 performance against Baylor, recording a career-high 11 tackles in the Tigers' 17-16 win over the Baylor Bears in the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Georgia. He finished with nine solo tackles, with none bigger than his stop of Baylor tight end Matthew Klopfenstein at the goal line late in the 4th quarter, which thwarted a two-point conversion attempt and sealed the win for the Tigers.
Winters' clutch tackle came one play after miscommunication in coverage led to a Baylor touchdown, cutting the Tigers' lead to just one point with 0:09 remaining in regulation. Baylor elected to go for the win with a two-point conversion attempt, which allowed Winters a shot at redemption. It was a shot he did not miss.
"(DJ) Durkin always says 'next play mentality,'" Winters said postgame. "The next play came, (and I) made a play to win us the game."
Winters splits this week's award with Texas linebacker Rasheem Biles, who logged five tackles and created two turnovers in the Longhorns' 59-7 win over Texas State on Saturday. Winters will work to earn a second consecutive SEC award this week when Auburn faces Southern Miss on Saturday; kickoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

After adding veteran safety Taylor Rapp to their practice squad on Monday, the Denver Broncos cut undrafted rookie long snapper Luke Basso to make room for Rapp, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis.
Basso (6-3, 246 pounds) signed with the Broncos as a UDFA out of Oregon this spring. He competed with Mitch Fraboni this summer and after both players failed to make the 53-man roster, Denver signed each to the practice squad. Fraboni is expected to eventually get fully promoted to the active roster, and Basso will likely be kept in mind in case the Broncos ever need a fill-in long snapper down the road.
Rapp becomes the second safety on the practice squad, joining seventh-round draft pick Miles Scott. It wouldn't be surprising to see Rapp eventually fully promoted to the active roster once he gets up to speed in Denver.

The Big Ten issued a statement regarding the controversial finish of the Western Michigan-Michigan game in Ann Arbor on Saturday.
The conference said after reviewing replays, there was a second left on the clock when a Western Michigan player, No. 18 Micah Davis, touched the Bryce Underwood Hail Mary after stepping out of bounds in the back of the end zone.
Once the ball was touched by a player who was out of bounds, it was dead.
That was the explanation for how a second was put back on the clock, setting up the Underwood pass caught by JJ Buchanan to give the Wolverines a 13-12 victory, avoiding a massive upset.
Micah Davis is a safety from Dexter, Michigan, who spent two seasons with the Wolverines before transferring to the Broncos.

Once again, Nick Caserio made another under the radar, savvy move to bolder the roster.
Chris Braswell was a five-star recruit out of high school but had to wait his turn behind a star-star-studed Alabama roster. Braswell replaced Will Anderson Jr. at Alabama as the Jack linebacker in their 3-4 front and didn't disappoint. His impressive eight sacks and 10 tackles for loss were second on the team behind Dallas Turner who went 17th overall to the Vikings in 2024.
He was a redshirt junior when he entered the draft after only one year of true production at Alabama. The NFL Stock Exchange podcast had him rated as the fourth and sixth defensive end in the 2024 class. They noted "how raw of a player" he was and that he is built exceptionally well, but lacked a "pass rush plan" and could only rush with power. A 'toolsy" prospect with an Alabama pedigree, NFL stars have been made of much worse material.
Peering back into my own draft ****** ysis from 2o24, I noted that his pass rush ability was "simple" rather than nuanced. It didn't shine off the tape like his counterpart Turner did. I thought he set the edge well, was asked to contain, but wasn't the money-maker on defense. He would go on to be selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round.
The limitations mentioned came true. His lack of a plan and limited bag of tricks made him easy to predict in the pass rush. At 6'3", 250 pounds, he's a thick and powerful edge but never earned a start in two seasons with Tampa Bay. A lack of production immediately soured his relationship with the coaching staff. It's not as though the Bucs were great at rushing the passer either, Yaya Diaby led the team with seven sacks. His ineffectiveness lead to the team selecting Ruben Bain in the first round of this year's draft.

Brian Branch, Jack Campbell, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta are the four remaining members of the Lions' 2023 draft class still in Detroit. General Manager Brad Holmes has made clear his desire to keep them "around for a long time."
Campbell has signed a four-year, $81 million extension, and Gibbs signed a three-year, $67.5 million extension.
The Lions continue to work on deals for LaPorta and Branch.
"We still want to keep those guys around; those plans haven't changed," Holmes said Wednesday, via Richard Silva of The Detroit News. "There's a couple factors that we've still got to sort through. But in terms of us wanting those guys around? Absolutely. Hopefully, we can get that done."
Branch (Achilles) and LaPorta (back) had their 2025 seasons cut short by injury. The defensive back will miss at least the first four games on the reserve/PUP list, while the tight end was fully cleared before training camp.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — It's no secret how the breaking news on Raygun unfolded at the Paris Olympics: the memes and the mockery came thick and fast.
The Australian breaker at the center of it all, Rachael Gunn, has told how she had an inkling of how it might go when she saw a therapist ahead of the 2024 Games.
The trailer for "Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly," a Netflix documentary launched this month, begins with Gunn recounting how she went to the therapist in a panic right before the Olympics and was asked what's the worst that could happen?
"The whole world could laugh at me," she recalled answering, before adding that the therapist responded: "Do you think that's reasonable?"

Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik is confident the Bluebirds can reach the Championship play-offs.
Bielik joined from West Brom last week and was pleased with his debut in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United, but felt his new side deserved all three points.
The 28-year-old thinks Cardiff are capable of beating any team in the Championship if they iron out a few issues at both ends of the pitch.
Cardiff face unbeaten QPR at Loftus Road on Wednesday, 2 September (19:45 BST), and Bielik hopes they can build momentum with their first league win since promotion.
"The club is very optimistic, as every club should be. The plans for the future are for the Premier League," said Bielik.

Sunderland are accelerating their late-window business, with TeamTalk reporting that Igor Paixao is now one of the club's leading priorities as Regis Le Bris looks to sharpen his squad before the deadline. The headline detail is encouraging, "Personal terms are already in place" and an "overall fee is close to being agreed", even if Marseille are still trying to retain the Brazilian.
This feels like a significant push from Sunderland. The club have been clear in the market that they want added quality in the final third, and Paixao appears to be the name moving fastest. TeamTalk add that Marseille "need to raise funds to satisfy financial regulations" and that "Paixao's situation remains one to watch as Sunderland push to get the deal over the line". Those are the sort of conditions that can create an opportunity late in the window, provided negotiations remain steady.
There are, however, other attacking names under consideration. Sunderland "made an approach for Sporting winger Geny Catamo", but his "near-£50million asking price has so far put the Black Cats off making another move". The club have also "spoken to Roma about Matias Soule as they **** s alternatives before the window closes". Even so, the report is firm that "Paixao remains a key target".
Sunderland's work is not confined to the forward line. TeamTalk say the Black Cats "are also working on another central defender" and have "enquired about Tottenham's Kevin Danso". They have also "asked about Chelsea's Tosin Adarabioyo", with both players described as experienced options. There is competition, with Fulham also making checks, so this is a situation that may move quickly in the closing days.

The Miami Dolphins host the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night, closing out the 2026 Preseason schedule. The game may include a cameo appearance by the starters, but the stars of the night will be the roster bubble players. Will anyone crush it on the field tonight and force the coaches to keep them on the 53-man regular-season roster?
Several players on the roster bubble are worth watching throughout the game. Could they make an impact on offense or defense? Are they in a key special-teams role that hints at their making the roster? We take a look at some of the players to watch tonight.
Mulbah went undrafted out of West Virginia in 2025 and signed with the New York Jets. He did not make the roster out of the preseason and spent time on the practice squad during the year. He signed with the Dolphins at the start of August, and he has made an impact quickly. Mulbah has been a force in the middle of the line, especially against the run. He is not perfect and he has growth that still needs to happen, but with a strong performance against the Falcons, he could force Miami to keep him on the roster rather than risking having him claimed off waivers by another team.
I have gone back and forth on projecting Herman to make the roster, with him on the wrong side of the cut line in today's 53-man roster projection. He has been solid as a lead blocker, in pass protection, and as an outlet option in the passing game. A linebacker in college, Herman has made the adjustment to being a fullback and he is doing it well enough to force the Dolphins to at least consider using a roster spot to keep him. Tight end Ben Sims, who is listed as the first team fullback on the depth chart, has missed time and Herman has taken advantage of the opportunity. A strong performance on Friday, especially if he makes a special teams play, could land him on the right side of the cut line.
The numbers seem to be against Goode making the roster this year, but the 2022 seventh-round pick could change that tonight. Primarily a special teams player, if he can make an impact during the game, he might force his way onto the roster. He has been fine during training camp, but fine might not be good enough to justify a roster position. Stepping up tonight might be a requirement for Goode to stay with the team another year.

LAS VEGAS—Outside of winning, the goal for the Las Vegas Raiders in this final preseason game was simple: find solutions.
With many positional battles coming down to the final days of the preseason, this marked the last opportunity for players to prove just where they fit into the Raiders' plans for 2026. Everything from starting jobs to roster spots was on the line, forcing the Raiders to leave everything out on the field.
While the Raiders would come out on the losing end of an 18-12 kicking battle against the San Francisco 49ers, they were able to get some questions answered about themselves.
First off, Klint Kubiak poured cold water on the idea of naming a starting quarterback for Week One. However, the performances from the game against San Francisco would suggest what the decision will be.
Kirk Cousins put together a performance that Fernando Mendoza described as "ruthlessly efficient," going 8-for-11 with 51 passing yards. Meanwhile, Mendoza himself ended up struggling with a 7-for-14 line for 57 yards. The first overall pick was also charged with an interception that deflected off the hands of Jalen Nailor to 49ers linebacker Tatum Bethune and two sacks.

I'm feeling in the mood for something different than what I usually do. I want to go full on listicle. A list article. Or maybe I just need to randomly ruminate?
I have been turning my back on the Cardinals games mid-game over the last few weeks. Especially it seems on Tuesday nights when I usually write… I suppose there were downward trends in June and July that led to our trade deadline results, but now that the pantry is stripped bare of starting pitching, it has become easier to not watch the games every inning.
Part of the downturn in entertainment value was certainly due to the offense not being able to do amazing comeback wins all season, but I think we all saw that one coming.
Which means I am not as apt to bother to go see them live, because of probabilities and whatnot (and intense heat indices). Money is always an issue, but it's easier to spend time and currency on teams that don't throw pitches that can be absolutely destroyed, and offenses that offend a little more often. I'll probably go see some September baseball, because this is still a fun team to watch, but…
The bullpen is what it is at this point. Not the worst, but a nailbiter every time. It wouldn't be so bad if our closer was a little more shutdown, but he would fit in on many teams as closer. This bullpen will however randomly give up games. And that alone will make it tough to be above .500, a make games not as easy to watch. It also drives down team morale of course, but no one can say how much that could matter, ephemera and random thoughts…

The Iowa football program has always prided itself on developing stellar offensive linemen. Every team in the Kirk Ferentz era seems to have at least one or two linemen who end up playing at the next level. The 2026 Hawkeyes look primed to continue that trend.
Kade Pieper and Trevor Lauck are the superstars of this year's offensive line. Pieper has been named to virtually every single preseason All-American team out there, and Lauck has received his fair share of accolades as well. The duo is among the best players in all of college football.
That was more than evident in USA TODAY Sports' preseason top 100 college football players. The list, put together by writer Austin Curtright, featured a pair of Iowa stars.
Lauck came in at No. 66 on the list, while Pieper ranked No. 26.
Curtwright didn't have anything specific to say about either Hawkeye, but his placement of them on the list speaks volumes. Iowa has two of the best offensive linemen in the country to work with. That's huge considering the question mark at the quarterback position and the fact that Iowa has to replace three NFL linemen from last year's Joe Moore Award unit.

In less than two weeks, Louisiana football will be gearing up for its 2026 season opener vs Lamar on Sept. 5, and the anticipation only continues to grow.
The Ragin' Cajuns wrapped up fall camp on Aug. 22, using the majority of their final scrimmage to work on situational plays, goal-line sets and redzone drives. Now fifth-year head coach Michael Desoremeaux and his staff will try to continue to put the pieces together as they hope to outdo 2025's 6-7 overall finish.
The biggest positive heading into this final offseason stretch for UL is the impending return of wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr., who missed the entire preseason camp due to a knee injury. Sampson's return, however, doesn't put an end to the injury bug that lingers on the Cajuns roster.
"Injury-wise, we got some good and bad news, Brock Chappell and Broderick Stewart didn't finish the scrimmage," Desormeaux said. "They're going to go see the doctors today and we're hoping that it's not a long-term deal. They feel like Brock's is probably not. Broderick, we're gonna wait and see the image and what it looks like.
"Maxie [Baudoin IV] did miss the scrimmage last week, it's nothing major just some stuff that he's kind of having. Just a little bit of aggravation in his arm so I'll feel good about getting him back."

NEW YORK (AP) — Dylan Cease carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Nathan Lukes' homer in the eighth inning was the difference as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 4-3 on Saturday.
Cease's bid for his second career no-hitter and the second in Toronto history ended with two outs in the seventh on a single to right field by Jazz Chisholm Jr. on his 106th pitch. Cease allowed an RBI single to Austin Wells that cut Toronto's lead to 3-1 before being replaced by Spencer Miles.
Cease allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander tied a season-high with five walks and struck out eight.
Cease threw 60 of 111 pitches for strikes. It was the second time this season Cease had a deep no-hit bid and second time he lost a no-hitter at Yankee Stadium.
Cease lost a no-hitter in the ninth inning July 8 at San Francisco and his bid for another on May 7, 2025, with San Diego at Yankee Stadium.

The Minnesota Vikings hosted the Baltimore Ravens at TCO Performance Center in Eagan, MN, on Wednesday for their first of two joint practices. Fans couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day in the middle of August. Unfortunately, the on-field product didn't reflect the picture-perfect backdrop.
Both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy struggled throughout the day. The Ravens defense was blanketing receivers, testing the likes of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison with physicality before, during, and after the pass. It was a frustrating day for the passing game, providing little clarity of what this offense can look like with Murray under center.
But that was just one phase of practice. The Vikings defense flexed its own muscles, with Brian Flores capping practice in his truest form. It reminded everyone that this team will have a chance as long as Flores is coordinating the defense. If the Vikings' offense can keep up, opponents will be in trouble.
Here are the three main takeaways from Wednesday's practice. The Ravens return for the second day of joint practices on Thursday.
Murray and McCarthy were the only Vikings quarterbacks to take snaps during 7-on-7 and team drills, and neither looked sharp. Passes sailed over receivers' heads. They were underthrown. There were several batted passes. Yet it was hard to pin all the blame on Minnesota's signal-callers.

Tuesday Night marked the fifth time this season that the last place Angels defeated the Astros.

The Angels scored the first run of the night in the top of the third inning. Wade Meckler singled to center, stole second and came around thanks to a clutch two out RBI from Nolan Schanuel. The Astros had chances in the first. With two outs, Issac Paredes drew a walk and went to third on a single from Jose Altuve. However, each were stranded when Daulton Varsho struck out swinging.
Josh Lowe would add to the Angels lead, launching an opposite field home run in the fourth inning off Cristian Javier. It was Lowe's 10th home run of the season. Javier would last four innings, allowing 5 hits, a pair of runs and striking out five on 87 pitches. The 87 pitches would be Javier's highest total of the year. Bryan King would come on in relief and exit after a Nolan Schanuel single. King would give way to Enyel De Los Santos, who would promptly allow an RBI double to Zach Neto. Just like that, the Angels had posted runs in three consecutive innings.
In just his fifth major league start, George Klassen would pitch shut out baseball over seven innings, resembling Chuck Finley in his Halos prime. He'd earn the win. The Astros lone run came off the bat of Cam Smith who hit his 17 home run of the year of Jose Fermin.

On the morning of last Sunday (16), Atlético's youth academy director, Luiz Carlos de Azevedo, welcomed the owners of Kiala FC, Kelly Key and her husband, Mico Freitas, and showed them the youth facilities at Cidade do Galo.

The Tennessee ******* ans will take the field for another open training camp practice on Monday and will greet some new faces.
One day after adding tight end Matt Lauter and running back Dominic Richardson to take the place of edge Jaylen Harrell (ACL) and tight end Jaren Kanak (pec), who were placed on injured reserve (IR) on Sunday, the ******* ans added a cornerback to the roster.
On Monday, the ******* ans signed cornerback Corey Mayfield Jr. and waived/injured linebacker Sean Brown.
Mayfield originally entered the league as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Baltimore Ravens following the 2023 NFL draft after finishing his college career at Texas-San Antonio. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound cornerback does have two years of experience with the San Antonio Brahmas in the UFL, but has no NFL experience.
Tennessee signed Brown as an undrafted rookie free agent out of NC State following the 2026 NFL Draft. An undersized linebacker prospect at 6-foot-0, 216 pounds, Brown was a true developmental player with some pass-rush upside. He will now revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers and could be eligible for an injury settlement.

Sam Burns simply couldn't keep up with Scottie Scheffler in the final group on Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Scheffler stormed to victory at TPC Southwind, finishing on 17-under par after shooting a final-round 66.

Yesterday's 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund marked the official end of Roma's pre-season, a period filled with the usual highs, lows, hyperbole, and overreactions we see every August. While the Giallorossi looked much sharper in Dortmund than at any point during the summer schedule, there was still a noticeable lack of pace on the left side of the attack, a wrinkle they haven't been able to smooth out for several years.
Since Sunday is typically a day of rest, we'll spare you the trauma of recounting Roma's many failures in this department over the past few years. Instead, we'll focus on a relatively new name in the Giallorossi transfer web: Lyon left-winger Malick Fofana. A 21-year-old winger, Fofana began his professional career with Gent in his native Belgium before signing with Lyon on a €19.5 million transfer in January 2024.
In his first 18 months with the club, Fofana scored 15 goals and provided five ******* ists in roughly 1,000 minutes across all competitions, an impressive start for an 18- or 19-year-old making the jump to Ligue 1. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to build on that success last season after missing nearly six months due to ankle surgery. Still, during his brief time on the pitch last season, Fofana managed two goals and an ******* ist in 749 league minutes.
Despite the injuries, Fofana has the necessary pace and trickery to take flight under Gasperini. The problem, as you're no doubt aware, is cost and competition. Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her strawweight **** le with a largely one-sided but somewhat lackluster outing against Gillian Robertson in the UFC 330 co-main event.
Takedowns and submission attempts ruled the day for Dern as she came close to finishing Robertson a couple of times during the fight but she mostly just maintained control and showed she was the superior grappler. Robertson really didn't produce any offense until the final round and even then she just managed to stay in control on the ground without really damaging Dern.
When it was over the judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 with Dern getting the unanimous decision victory.
"I'm super happy," Dern said about her win. "My first **** le win I got taken down a lot of times so I've been working on my wrestling. I'm still the champion. I definitely wanted to submit her, that was the goal. I try to get submissions in all my fights. I wish I could do some more damage to set up the submissions."
A striking exchange led to Robertson shooting for a takedown but Dern countered effectively before the strawweights separated again. Dern was very effective with her combinations including a stiff leg kick that kept chipping away at Robertson's base.

Friday night brought a much-needed win for the Pirates, taking down the Red Sox 8-4. But during the action, Pittsburgh's home fans watch took in a scary scene, with third baseman Nick Gonzales being hit in the helmet with a pitch.
In the fifth inning of Friday's matchup, Red Sox pitcher Jovani Moran threw a fastball that snuck up-and-in toward Gonzales' face, and the ball made contact with his helmet before it fell off and Gonzales bent over.
Fortunately for Gonzales and the Pirates, though, he appears to have avoided any significant injury.
The 94 mph fastball appeared to have only hit the helmet, rather than Gonzales' face, and while he left the game for precautionary reasons, he was able to walk around fine and shake it off.

Squad management has become a central theme at Anfield in recent weeks, particularly around loan pathways for younger players, and Calum Scanlon looks increasingly likely to be among the first to move.
According to The Athletic, Scanlon has interest from both Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday, with a departure on loan viewed as the probable outcome. For those on the fringes of first-team involvement, the balance is always between short-term cover and long-term development. In Scanlon's case, regular football now appears the priority.
Cardiff's interest is understandable. Scanlon spent the second half of last season there and gained useful senior exposure, making eight appearances. While the output in goals and ****** ists was limited, the value of that spell sat more in minutes, physical adaptation and tactical education. Supporters and donors Todd and Michelle Hein were honored at the Indiana State University Athletic Department's sixth annual Tried and True Gala on Friday night.
The couple received the Max and Jackie Gibson Award, given to supporters making a significant impact on Sycamore athletics via service or philanthropic giving.
More than 200 people attended the event at Hulman Center. Among the guest speakers was former ISU basketball standout Jayson Kent, now in the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers system.
The Heins were lauded also by ISU President Mike Godard and Athletic Director Nathan Christensen, family, friends and community members.
"Todd and Michelle have never treated Indiana State as an institution they simply support from a distance, but they have taken an active, personal role in our success," Godard said, according to an ISU news release. "Their financial generosity has been significant, but their greatest impact is found in relationships. They have invested not merely in an athletics department, but in people."
