Niclas Füllkrug has been a big success at Werder Bremen since returning on loan from West Ham in the summer, with a brace against SC Paderborn at the weekend taking his tally to seven goals in as many games for the Green-Whites this season.
Given Füllkrug's impressive form, questions are already being asked about Werder's chances of keeping the 33-year-old beyond this season, with sporting managing director Clemens Fritz addressing the topic on the Sky programme "Sky90 – die Fußballdebatte" on Sunday.
"Ultimately, there are three parties involved: West Ham, Niclas and Werder Bremen. And that is, of course, what makes it challenging. With two parties, things are sometimes a little easier," Fritz said.
One positive for Werder is that Füllkrug is happy at the club.
"Niclas feels comfortable in Bremen. He does us an enormous amount of good. Of course, I would be delighted if he stayed with us beyond this season, and I'm sure the whole of Bremen would feel the same. At the moment, however, it's still too early," Fritz added.

Germany great Lothar Matthäus has called for the return of Niclas Füllkrug to the national team.
"The numbers speak for him, even if he's at a certain age. Jürgen Klopp wants to rejuvenate the national team, but the young players still have too much fluctuation in their performance," Matthäus wrote in his column for broadcaster Sky on Sunday evening.
"A experienced player such as Füllkrug would bring in a good feeling," he added.
Füllkrug returned to Werder Bremen this season, a club he left in 2023 to join Borussia Dortmund. In 2024, he moved to West Ham, but struggled due to injuries.
He's at Bremen on a loan from the Premier League side and has scored seven goals in seven games across all competitions so far.

The Bundesliga is back! On Matchday 1, Freiburg host Werder Bremen in an exciting opening fixture for both sides. Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus (and potentially Eren **** çi as well) will face his former club, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup.
Julian Schuster's side will be looking to improve on last season and push for a return to the European places, with a Europa League spot potentially within reach. Bremen, meanwhile, have one primary objective: survival. After a shaky 2025/26 campaign that saw them finish 15th, Werder will be hoping to take a step forward this season - with Niclas Füllkrug expected to play a key role in their ambitions.
Who will come out on top in this match? With just about an hour to go until kickoff, here are the confirmed lineups for both sides:
SC Freiburg (4-2-3-1): Backhaus - Kübler, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo - Eggestein, Engelhardt - Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant - Matanović
Werder Bremen (4-3-3): Hein - Schmetgens, Pieper, Friedl, Deman - Chuky, Reis, Lynen - Njinmah, Füllkrug, Grüll

Niclas Füllkrug could be on his way back to Werder Bremen. According to Transfermarkt, West Ham United are considering allowing the 33-year-old to leave the club on a free transfer.
Füllkrug joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in 2024 for around €27 million, but his spell in England has been disappointing. Injuries repeatedly kept him out, and he scored just three goals for the Hammers. Last season, he was loaned to AC Milan, where he managed only one goal in 20 appearances.
West Ham had been looking for around €5 million for the Germany international, but with no suitable offer arriving, the club could now consider terminating his contract.
That would be a major boost for Werder Bremen. Füllkrug came through Werder's academy and enjoyed the best spell of his career at the club, becoming the Bundesliga's joint top scorer in 2022/23. According to Transfermarkt, Werder are already in contact with the striker and are interested in bringing him back.
A free transfer could make the deal considerably more realistic, although Füllkrug's salary could still prove an obstacle. For the striker, meanwhile, returning to Bremen could offer the perfect opportunity to revive his career.

Niclas Fullkrug has been linked with a move to Lazio as Gennaro Gattuso searches for a new number nine. The experienced 33-year-old is reportedly eager to head to Rome, yet there are a few factors hindering the deal.
Firstly, while Fullkrug has been offered up to the uncertain Biancocelesti following his loan stint with AC Milan last term, he earns €3.5 million and would have to cut his salary to return to Italy.
Second of all, the German's single goal in 20 Serie A appearances hardly makes for good reading. In fact, as Corriere dello Sport confirm, Gattuso is eyeing up a loan-to-buy move for Milan's Santi Gimenez. The risk with that, however, is that it's a deal that can only be evaluated in late August, ****** uming the striker is still with the Rossoneri after struggles of his own.
Gattuso has quite the recruitment job on his hands. At the time of writing, this window sees him with an exposed defence and a blunt attack – one that only registered 41 goals last season.
Petar Ratkov could leave the club after a bleak spell on the team's fringes, despite Lazio shelling out €13 million to Salzburg for him. Plus, with the side's ninth-placed finish last term, there isn't exactly a huge transfer fund to dip into for what is a very expensive position.
