Back in 2016, many expected that then-Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater would never play in another NFL game. Fast forward to 2026, and Bridgewater is retiring (for a second time) after 11 NFL seasons.
Bridgewater suffered a devastating knee injury during practice with the Vikings in 2016. At the time, he had emerged as Vikings' franchise quarterback, but the injury changed the trajectory of his entire career.
After bouncing around the league largely as a backup, Bridgewater returned to Detroit this offseason to be Jared Goff's backup. On Sunday, though, Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters that Bridgewater had decided to retire.

The Detroit Lions continue to scan the free-agent market as training camp rolls along, and one name from their latest workout group certainly stands out.
According to the NFL transaction wire, Detroit brought eight players to Allen Park for tryouts, headlined by former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. The group also included quarterbacks Jack Plummer and Jake Haener, receivers Julian Hicks and Ray-Ray McCloud, and linebackers Amari Burney, Milo Eifler and Amen Ogbongbemiga.
Ogbongbemiga has since signed with Detroit, while the Lions are also adding veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs following Teddy Bridgewater's retirement.
Diggs, 27, is easily the most accomplished player Detroit evaluated.
The former second-round pick exploded in 2021 when he led the NFL with 11 interceptions, returned two for touchdowns and earned First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. He followed that with another Pro Bowl season in 2022.

The Detroit Lions have already found their replacement for quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, adding veteran Josh Dobbs to the roster on Sunday, according to Dobbs' agent, Mike McCartney, on social media.
Dobbs, 31, is familiar with both the team and new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. He spent more than two weeks on Detroit's practice squad during the 2022 season but departed when the Tennessee ****** ans signed him to the active roster just 16 days later.
Dobbs was traded to Petzing's Arizona Cardinals during the 2023 preseason and wound up starting eight games, going 1-7 in that span. He completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions under Petzing.
The move comes just hours after Lions coach Dan Campbell announced that Bridgewater, who was expected to back up Jared Goff during the 2025 season, is stepping away from football.
Dobbs, a fourth-round pick out of Tennessee by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, has made 27 career appearances and 15 starts since 2018. All but three of those starts came in 2023, when he was dealt to the Minnesota Vikings at the trade deadline as an emergency replacement for the injured Kirk Cousins. The Detroit Lions announced a flurry of roster moves ahead of Sunday's training camp practice. They officially placed Teddy Bridgewater on the reserve/retired list, they've signed cornerback Ryan Cooper and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga, and they've waived tight end Nick Muse.
Bridgewater's move to the retirement list comes minutes after Dan Campbell announced the veteran quarterback is stepping away.
"I've known Teddy a long time, and, man, the human being is unbelievable," Campbell said. "Certainly the player, everything he's about, the teammate that he is, the way he prepares. Always played the game up here and had a huge heart. He's going to be missed."

Campbell said the team intends to sign a veteran backup quarterback, and hopes to do so by Monday.
Cooper was one of three defenders who tried out for the Lions over the weekend. He last played football with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL, posting 25 tackles, four pass breakups and an interception in nine games. At 5-foot-11, 184 pounds, Cooper has only made one game appearance at the NFL level, playing six special teams snaps for the Baltimore Ravens in 2024. Detroit needed a little cornerback depth while D.J. Reed is sidelined with a minor groin injury and the Lions waived De'Shawn Rucker with an injury designation.
Ogbongbemiga has been in the NFL for five seasons, appearing in 72 games and making three starts since 2021. He went undrafted in the NFL but was a first-round pick in the CFL in 2021. He opted to go the NFL route, making the Los Angeles Chargers 53-man roster as a rookie and appearing in 15 games. He lasted two more years with the Chargers, playing mostly on special teams—932 snaps on teams over three years.

McDoom joined Baltimore after completing his college career at Cincinnati. Johnson participated in a three-player workout with Baltimore before agreeing to join the team. The former Saint Frances Academy standout entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2025 and appeared in two games during his first season.
The 24-year-old began his college career at Georgia, where he played on two national championship teams. Johnson earned second-team ****** ociated Press All-America honors in 2022 after leading the Bulldogs with nine tackles for loss. He transferred to Kentucky for his final season and led the Wildcats with 67 tackles while adding seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble.
Johnson will compete for a reserve role behind Baltimore's established inside linebackers and could improve his roster chances by contributing on special teams. The Lions certainly have top-notch quarterback play in Jared Goff. However, what if the Lions get bad injury luck and he goes down? Do the Lions still have a chance with Teddy Bridgewater or Luke Altmyer?
CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan took a look as he ranked NFL contenders by their backup quarterback situations.
Sullivan ranked the 16 teams with odds of +2500 or shorter at DraftKings to win Super Bowl LXI. Of those 16 teams, the Lions ranked 15th on this list.
Not that long ago, Teddy Bridgewater was coaching high school football. After resigning from his post at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in August of last year, he signed on to be a backup for the Buccaneers and did see some action in Week 12 last season against the Rams. There, Bridgewater completed 53.3% of his throws for just 62 yards. The last time he started a game came back in Week 17 of the 2022 season as a member of the Dolphins.

Recovering from a serious injury tests far more than an athlete's body. It challenges patience, discipline, and mental toughness just as much as physical strength. Those qualities often determine whether a player returns to form or simply returns to the field. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Teddye Buchanan appears to be passing that test.
Drafted in Round 4 of the 2025 NFL Draft, Buchanan would notch 93 tackles, 0.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and a pass deflection through 14 games and 13 starts. He'd eventually be named to the Pro Football Writers **** ociation's NFL All-Rookie Team, but not before tearing his ACL in December, which would obviously end his season.
Although Buchanan remains sidelined as he continues his recovery, updates have been positive. He's expected to be one of the important cogs in Baltimore's defensive machine when healthy.
Veteran linebacker Roquan Smith believes the second-year defender has already impressed teammates by the way he's handled every step of the process. Speaking with reporters after a training camp practice, Smith couldn't hide his admiration for Buchanan's commitment.
Kudos from perennial Pro Bowlers say a lot. Smith admitted he has been amazed by what he's watched throughout Buchanan's rehabilitation. Smith's praise wasn't centered on Buchanan's athletic ability. Instead, it focused on the maturity and determination the young linebacker has displayed throughout a difficult stretch of his career.

Every start of preseason we make it clear that these games are nothing more than fitness preparation for the squad. However when you give playing time for several young players like we did today, you have to keep your eyes peeled for what may come next.
One of those young'uns, Dastan Satpayev, had some eyes set on him and showed why that was the case. A good run from Ryan Kavuma-McQueen's pass to break the offside trap from the hosts at Accor Stadium in Sydney and the Kazakh international scored not even 10 minutes into the match.
While offensively the Blues were very promising, the combination of Tosin Adarabioyo and 18-year-old centre-back Olutayo Subuloye in defence didn't make it for solid defending. In spite of Teddy Sharman-Lowe's best efforts to organise his teammates in a corner kick, he couldn't do much to avoid giving Western Sydney Wanderers the tying goal.
It didn't help that midfielders Reggie Watson and Dário Essugo weren't in the kind of rhythm needed to control action in their sector. The hosts were thus able to attack at whim with little to no counterpart offered by Chelsea, who had instead to keep defending against a barrage of shots from the Wanderers.

Well that was about as quick as it gets. 4-Star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri decommitted from Notre Dame and its 2028 football recruiting class just less than a week after giving his public commitment.
I’m not going to dive too far into the weeds for this one — it’s the 2028 class and that’s still forever to go. It looks like he had a change of heart, and not just about Notre Dame. Tagliaferri is now predicted to commit to the Oklahoma Sooners.
Maybe in the past this would feel like a bigger deal, but Notre Dame’s quarterback recruiting is on a different planet.
Even if you take Blake Hebert out of it (and you should also have CJ Carr out of it) the Irish still have Teddy Jarrard, Noah Grubbs, and Champ Monds scheduled to be on the roster in 2028… which is still plenty of time to find another QB for the class.

Which is why I’m here to introduce my top 10 Germany wins at the World Cup.
For this, I’m going to include matches that I know and watched in person (live, on the TV, haven’t got the facilities to watch Germany live in the stadium yet) and I will also rank each match based on how special the match is to me.
From the 1970s onward, West Germany was one of the most powerful footballing nations. It had won the Euros in 1972 followed by the 1974 World Cup but lost out in the final of Euro 1976. From 1980 to 1992, it had been a finalist of both the Euros and the World Cup across multiple editions of each (apart from Euro 1984) but only won Euro 1980, they had lost two World Cup finals to Italy and Argentina and two Euros finals to bitter rivals Netherlands and Denmark (who weren’t even supposed to be in the tournament).
In 1990, the Germans produced strong performances at the World Cup held in Italy. They were undefeated for their entire run and only failed to win once: a draw in the group stage against Colombia in Milan. Otherwise, they beat Yugoslavia and the United Arab Emirates in Group D, then conquered the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, and England on penalties to reach the final.
For defending champs Argentina, they lost their opening game against Cameroon then beat the Soviet Union and then drawing with Romania and advanced to the knockouts by being one of the best third-placed teams in the group stage. La Albiceleste then narrowly beat Brazil in the last 16, before overcoming Yugoslavia and Italy on penalties.
