The House Ways and Means Committee will consider legislation Wednesday that would exempt some crypto transaction fees from capital-gains calculations and apply new federal tax rules to stablecoins, staking, mining and digital ***** et trading.
Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., introduced the 114-page Digital ***** et Tax Certainty Act, or H.R. 10357. The committee has scheduled its markup for 10 a.m. Eastern on Sept. 16.
During a markup, committee members debate a bill, propose amendments, and decide whether to advance it to the full House.
The legislation would create a "de minimis" exemption for qualifying network or transaction fees of $10 or less. De minimis refers to an amount considered too small to require standard tax treatment.
Paying a blockchain fee with crypto can create a taxable event because the IRS treats digital ***** ets as property. The exemption would allow taxpayers to disregard gains or losses on eligible fees.

ARK Invest founder Cathie Wood called warnings that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity "ridiculous," while welcoming the industry's push to slow advances at the AI frontier so safety measures can catch up.
Wood also expects President Donald Trump to block new federal rules. Polymarket traders currently give a qualifying U.S. AI safety law just a 19% chance of being enacted before 2027, on about $114,000 in trading.
Wood called the industry's slowdown pledge a "positive step." Drawing on her experience investing through the tech and telecom bubble, she said she welcomed industry leaders publicly confronting AI's risks.
"Half of the solution is understanding the problem," Wood told Reuters.

Lando Norris took a superb pole position for McLaren at the Spanish Grand Prix, beating Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a breathless final few seconds of qualifying.
"Oh, what a lap, gorgeous," said an ecstatic Norris after pipping world championship leader Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds. "Oh, that might be my best one."
Verstappen was 0.140secs off the pace, as all three moved ahead of Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari.
The seven-time champion had held the top spot after the first runs in the final session.
Hamilton's team-mate Charles Leclerc was fifth, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri.

America's F1 hopeful Colton Herta pulls out of the sprint F2 race in Madrid with illness, but it comes after the FIA penalised him to start from the pitlane.
It is not going well for America's F1 hopeful Herta at all in the FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship in 2026. Having taken a big step to move away from IndyCar in the hope of securing enough superlicence points to race in Formula 1, potentially with Cadillac, the season hasn't gone his way at all.
Racing for Hitech GP, Herta is 17th with 26 points after 10 rounds, with a best result of fifth. The American is racing at F1's new Madring circuit in Madrid on Spanish GP weekend. He started it well in fourth. He was doing well in qualifying in the Top 10 for the most part.
However, he dropped to 12th in the end after he suffered a crash at Turn 19 to end the session. Following the day's run, just before Restricted Period One kicked in for F2 teams, Hitech GP found a problem with the American's car, which they started to work on.
Since it was a priority, they continued working into Restricted Period One and therefore were in breach of Article 21.6a of the F2 regulations. The technical delegate reported the matter, and the stewards duly penalised him with a pitlane start in Madrid's sprint race on Saturday.

Drama seems to be following Michael La Sasso wherever he goes this summer.
A few weeks after his career breakthrough win at the LIV season finale in Indianapolis where he bested Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, the 22-year-old shot a final round 5-under 67 on Friday at Golf-und Country Club Seddiner See in Michendorf, Germany.
It was good enough to get the 2025 NCAA individual champion on the number to qualify at DP World Tour first-stage Qualifying School.
All of it was in jeopardy after a costly bogey on the par-3 11th hole.
La Sasso followed that up with a par on No. 12 and then birdied four of his six last holes to get to T-18 on the tournament.

A health savings account (HSA) is a type of account that lets you save — and potentially invest — for healthcare expenses while earning tax benefits along the way. Depending on your financial situation and immediate medical needs, an HSA can even be a valuable retirement planning tool. But HSAs aren't available to everyone. Continue reading to learn how HSAs work, their rules, and pros and cons.
A health savings account is a tax-advantaged account you can use to pay for qualifying medical expenses, including prescription medications, eyeglasses, doctor's visits, and more. Some HSAs function like a savings account, while others give you the option to invest your funds for future use.
HSAs are known for their triple tax advantage: You fund them with pre-tax dollars, your contributions grow tax-free, and withdrawals are tax-free as long as you use them for qualifying medical expenses. For this reason, HSAs can be a valuable retirement savings tool if you don't need the funds to pay for immediate medical needs.
Unlike flexible spending accounts (FSAs), HSA contributions don't expire at the end of the year. This means you can contribute to your account year after year without the need to "use it or lose it." HSAs aren't subject to required minimum distributions, either.

Qinwen Zheng's incredible US Open run has now come to an end.
Zheng underwent elbow surgery last year and had since struggled to rediscover the form that helped her reach world number four in the WTA rankings, an Australian Open final and win Olympic gold.
As a result, Zheng had dropped down the rankings and had to play qualifying at the US Open as the world number 121.
Not only did Zheng come through qualifying, but she made it all the way to the quarter-finals and she will now be rewarded in the WTA rankings.

F1 drivers check out the new Madring circuit ahead of the Spanish GP, as they discuss the dangers, difficulties in overtaking and getting a lap done, and talk about the La Monumental corner.
Jeddah? Macau? Monaco? Baku? Zandvoort? The new Madring circuit has been compared to a lot of other tracks on the F1 calendar due to its nature and layout. The drivers are bracing for a hard and tough outing in this weekend's Spanish GP. The narrow and high-speed combination never works well for everyone, with the Saudi Arabian GP a prime example in recent times.
Of course, the F1 drivers eventually find a way through to get things right. But still, ahead of the start, they have mixed emotions, with most agreeing that it will be dangerous. Even though some feel it will not be as dangerous as Jeddah already is, the majority agree that defending will be much easier and overtaking much harder, as seen in Monaco.
Even getting a lap right in qualifying will be a challenge, which the F1 drivers accept. Almost everyone has had a run in the simulator, but they are waiting for the real feel, as the speed and power can only be ascertained once someone is really on track. One of its major attractions is the long, banked La Monumental, which, of course, everyone is looking to try in the real car.
Here's a list of F1 drivers speaking about the dangers:

How Sabah coach Valdas Dambrauskas went from Lithuanian game show to Champions League history originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
One of the most fascinating stories to come out of the early phases of this year's UEFA Champions League competition involves newly-formed Azerbaijani club Sabah FK and their mercurial coach.
Valdas Dambrauskas has led the young club to not only its first-ever top flight ***** le, but now their first-ever trip to the league phase of any European competition, let alone the Champions League.
Sabah became one of the final league phase qualifiers in the 2026/27 competition as they reversed a 2-1 aggregate deficit to Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the final qualifying round, winning the second leg 5-2 in a stunning comeback. Trailing 4-3 on aggregate heading into stoppage time of the second leg, Tellur Mutallimov scored in the 94th minute to send the match to extra-time, where they would win the game with a pair of goals in the added period.
That sent Sabah to the lucrative league phase, which has changed the trajectory of the club forever.

Jalen Duren appears to be willing to bet on himself, with the Detroit Pistons unable to meet his contract demands before the end of September.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Duren is becoming more and more open to accepting his one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer that would allow him to play the 2026-27 season and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
"The challenge Duren faces hasn't changed much since early July. He seeks a lucrative new five-year deal reflective of his leaps last season to All-Star and All-NBA status — playoff struggles be ******* ed — but there is no team in the marketplace with salary cap ******* e to make a run at Duren that exerts pressure on the Pistons to increase their offers."
"One source briefed on the process says Duren is increasingly prepared to play out the coming season on his $9.6 million qualifying offer — with the intent to become an unrestricted free agent next summer — if no deal with Detroit materializes by the end of September. That would be a risky route to go for a player who achieved what Duren achieved last season, and there will naturally be considerable skepticism that the 22-year-old is truly willing to go the qualifying offer route until it actually happens … but let's see how the rest of the month plays out."
That lack of outside leverage has become the center of this stalemate.

Elena Rybakina is one win away from the world number one ranking, but the Kazakh star says her main goal in her US Open quarter-final clash with Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday is to advance toward a third Grand Slam ******* le.
"Number one ranking is, of course, one of the goals," Rybakina says. "But I think the main focus for me is to win the ******* les, and then the ranking will follow up."
Rybakina arrived at Flushing Meadows as one of four women with a chance to supplant Aryna Sabalenka atop the rankings, and the only one with her fate in her own hands. Reaching the semis will send her to the summit for the first time, and she could even get there if she loses -- if Sabalenka, world number three Jessica Pegula and fourth-ranked Coco Gauff all fail to lift the trophy.
Rybakina, who has shown no sign of the foot injury that hindered her US Open preparations, will be out to halt the remarkable run of Zheng -- the Paris Olympics gold medallist who had to come through qualifying thanks to a rankings plunge in the wake of elbow surgery last year.
Gauff, in the quarters for the first time since she won the US Open ******* le in 2023, will take on fifth-seeded French Open champion Mirra Andreeva for a place in the semis while men's top seed Alexander Zverev faces Dutch veteran Botic van de Zandschulp.

With training camp fast approaching, several Central Division teams still have a few questions to answer. Jalen Duren's contract situation is still unresolved in Detroit; Victor Oladipo has been seen as an option for the Chicago Bulls, and the Pistons are even connected to Michael Porter Jr. as a potential future trade target.
The biggest storyline ongoing is Duren's restricted free agency, but there appears to be a little more optimism about that agreement. The Athletic's Sam Amick reported that the financial difference between Duren and the Pistons isn't as big as it was previously believed.
"I mean, as far as the state of affairs, I don't know which way it's going to go. There is a gap. It's not as big as I thought it was before having a few recent conversations. It seems like there's, you know, there's a window here to get something done and put him back in a Pistons jersey."
"I think what's interesting is, like, the QO (qualifying offer) has become such a nuclear option for players and also for teams that it's fair to wonder, like, 'Man, if they can't completely bridge that gap, how do both sides feel about the QO?'" Amick continued. "Because, even from a human standpoint, we, as you guys know, haven't seen a lot of people successfully take that route."
Duren has been seeking more than $40 million a year, and the Pistons have been around $35 million per season. ESPN's Tim MacMahon recently put the Pistons' offer in the ballpark of $180 million over five years. The alternative is Duren accepting the $9.6 million qualifying offer and becoming an unrestricted free agent next season. This has been described as a nuclear option because of the risk it carries for both sides. The Kings do remain an interested party in a sign-and-trade possibility, or even a potential 2027 destination, because they can create the most max cap ******* e then, but the Pistons have reportedly had no interest in a sign-and-trade as of now.

Due to some sporadic runs of form and a very big helping hand from the footballing Gods, Liverpool found themselves qualifying for this season's Champions League and so the dream of more European nights at Anfield again became reality. For all of us Reds supporters and club it's the bare minimum requirement, and this writer has been luckily enough to have watched all six finals that Liverpool won, the first in 1977 when I was eight years old.
More importantly in the present moment, Wednesday evening is going to be the very first European game for head coach Andoni Iraola as head coach of any club, and let's hope that it will be even more than he could ever imagine because it's at Anfield and against one of the most difficult opponents in the Champions League in recent years in Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.
Everyone involved in European football probably knows about those Famous European Nights at Anfield under the lights, but it's not all up to the supporters—the players will need to start in the right mood as they did against Ipswich, with intensity from the first whistle but unlike in that game the players won't be allowed to ease up until the final whistle is blown.
There is history between Liverpool and Atleti, with the Reds winning three of the seven times the clubs have faced off in the Champions League whilst Atletico have won two and then two draws between them. More than the match ups being fairly even there are the tough tactics of Simeone, who has a knack of getting under the skin of opposing managers as well his players being very physical in their play. It's going to be an interesting test for Iraola and the players but especially Liverpool's head coach as this will be his first experience of the Champions league and a congested fixture list.
"Big game, the first Champions League for me as a coach," Iraola noted during the post-Ipswich match interviews when he was asked about the approaching match against Atletico. "At Anfield, under the lights. I love to play at night."

Frenchman Arthur Gea failed to convert a match point which would have seen him make history as the first lucky loser to ever reach the quarter-finals of the US Open.
Instead the 21-year-old fell in a gruelling five-set encounter with Botic van de Zandschulp, having also failed to serve out victory when he had the chance in the fourth set.
Three hours after holding match point the world No 87 was out, with van de Zandschulp battling back to win 3-6 6-7 (0-7) 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in five hours and 13 minutes - the fourth-longest match on record in New York.
Gea had to go through qualifying as his ranking was not high enough to automatically qualify for the main draw at the time entry lists were published. He lost to Nishesh Basavareddy in the final round of qualifying but was granted a reprieve when former runner-up Casper Ruud withdrew with injury before the tournament began, taking the Norwegian's place.
Gea seized his opportunity by making the fourth round but could not get past world No 70 van de Zandschulp, although he may take some comfort in his prize money of $480,000 - more than seven times the $66,000 he had expected to earn through qualifying.

France's Arthur Gea was one point away from being the first lucky loser to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final - but three hours later he was out of the US Open.
Gea, 22, was unable to convert a match point in a third-set tie-break against Dutch opponent Botic van de Zandschulp, then could not serve out victory in the fourth set of a gruelling fourth-round contest.
Van de Zandschulp took full advantage to escape from the jaws of defeat, going on to secure a 3-6 6-7 (0-7) 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 win after five hours and 13 minutes - the fourth longest match on record at Flushing Meadows.
World number 87 Gea was not ranked high enough for the main draw when the US Open entry list was finalised, meaning he had to go through qualifying instead.
Seeded first, he lost to American Nishesh Basavareddy in the third and final round but earned a reprieve when 2022 finalist Casper Ruud withdrew injured on the eve of the tournament.

Christopher Bell finally broke through when it mattered most.
Bell won the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Sunday night, capturing his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the 2026 season and opening the Chase with a massive statement win. The victory was Bell's 14th career Cup Series win and ended a frustrating stretch of near-misses that had seen him finish runner-up seven times.
Tyler Reddick entered Darlington with plenty of momentum and started the race from the pole after weather forced NASCAR to cancel qualifying.
Reddick immediately showed why he was considered one of the favorites, winning the opening stage after battling with Denny Hamlin throughout the first portion of the race. Bubba Wallace and Hamlin remained near the front as the field dealt with Darlington's notoriously difficult tire-wear conditions.
Reddick's strong start put him in position to score valuable playoff points, but the race was far from over.

Well, Team USA had tons of trouble with Italy.
Less than six months ago, Team USA defeated Italy by 34 points in the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Sunday in Berlin, Germany, Team USA squeaked out a three-point win, 55-52.
On paper, the Italians may not have had any advantages over the United States. The resumes and statistics that convey the Americans' superiority, however, failed to account for the firey and feisty motivation that the Italians brought to the matchup.
Team USA was going through the motions. Italy played with emotion.
As indicated by the final score, it was an ugly affair.

Mother Nature had other plans for the NASCAR Cup Series qualifying on Saturday as a lengthy lightning delay canceled the single-car session. Based on the metric, Tyler Reddick will start the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway from the pole position.
Because of this, Reddick earns the luxury of not only starting up front, but having an advantage on pit road. The driver of the No. 45 will be pitting from the No. 1 pit stall on Sunday night, the closest box to the exit of pit road.
Ryan Blaney lost his privilege of selecting his own pit stall after issues during pre-race inspection. The driver of the No. 12 will be pitting from the No. 27 pit stall, based on where every other team selected.
Here is a look at where every driver will pit for Sunday's Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington.

Nico Rosberg says it is "not feasible" for Ferrari to prioritise Lewis Hamilton over Charles Leclerc in the 2026 ***** le race, in a verdict that directly counters Hamilton's push for team orders at Ferrari.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1 following qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix, Rosberg addressed suggestions that Ferrari should back the seven-time champion in the ***** le fight. "They can't do that," said Rosberg, who was partnered with Hamilton at Mercedes from 2013 to 2016. "They have two No. 1 drivers, both on a similar level. You cannot, now in the middle of the season, put everything just working towards Lewis. It's way too early, and that doesn't make sense."
Rosberg acknowledged that the internal fighting has been costing Hamilton championship points, but insisted the team simply has no alternative. "Of course, it costs them performance, and Lewis championship points eventually, but the team cannot do that at this stage against Leclerc. It's not feasible," he added.
Rosberg's verdict carries particular weight because he lived through the exact arrangement Hamilton is now demanding. Hamilton has called for rules of engagement similar to his time at Mercedes with Rosberg, as GPblog reported on Sunday.
That famous document, created by then-Mercedes strategist James Vowles, was designed to prevent on-track clashes between Hamilton and Rosberg during their consecutive fierce ***** le fights between 2014 and 2016.

Trailing 5-0 in the third set against No. 22 seed Madison Keys, Qinwen Zheng staged a thrilling comeback by winning the next seven games to secure a 1-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory on Saturday, Sept. 5 and reach the fourth round of the US Open in New York.
Zheng, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist from China, held serve while trailing 5-0, then saved a match point with Keys serving at 5-1. Zheng broke the 2017 U.S. Open runner-up three times during her seven-game run before serving out the improbable victory in two hours, 28 minutes.
"I'm just telling myself (to) keep holding every single point, never give up, stay there and somehow, little by little, it just happened," Zheng said in her on-court interview.
In 2024, when she won gold at the Olympics after advancing to the Australian Open final, Zheng was ranked as high as No. 4. However, following right elbow surgery, she is at No. 121 and had to make it through qualifying just to reach the main draw at the U.S. Open.
"After the surgery, it was not easy," Zheng said. "It felt like I lost a bit of my energy on the tennis court. I've been through really tough (moments) these last three, four, five months.

The Sacramento Kings' interest in Jalen Duren isn't going away, even if the Pistons have basically shut the door on a sign-and-trade for now. On the latest episode of ESPN's The Hoop Collective, Anthony Slater said GM Scott Perry has Duren's name "with highlighter pen" as a possible target, while also noting that Sacramento could create max cap ***** e next summer if Duren takes his $9.6 million qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027. The Kings already met with Duren earlier in free agency, so this isn't just random trade-machine talk.
The problem is Detroit. The Kings would like to sign-and-trade for Duren with Domantas Sabonis going the other way, per Tim MacMahon, but "that's not happening," because the Pistons have made it clear they aren't interested in moving their 22-year-old All-NBA center. Detroit reportedly wants Duren closer to $35.0 million per season, while his camp is looking for more than $40.0 million, and the Pistons still "absolutely, positively, 100%" intend to keep him despite that gap in "nasty" negotiations.
So if the Kings really want Duren now instead of waiting another year, Sabonis alone clearly isn't getting it done. They would need to make the return much bigger, probably bring in more teams to solve the salary issues, and give Detroit enough immediate talent and draft capital to at least reconsider its current position. This four-team framework with the Bucks and Raptors does exactly that, while landing Sacramento the young center they clearly want to build around.
