WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump's pitch to send Americans $5,000 checks should Republicans prevail in the November midterms is drawing scorn from some members of Congress — the very people who have constitutional authority over federal spending.
Economists and other political observers are voicing concerns about the potential effects on inflation and the national balance sheet. Taken together, it's a swift reaction that makes clear that Trump's dubious election-year gambit is likely little more than another grand promise from a politician with a long history of them.

Peter Cullen has died at the age of 85. Cullen was a prolific voice actor who played Transformers' Optimus Prime in both the animated and live-action franchises, Winnie the Pooh's Eeyore, the evil K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider, and more. He was also known for voicing the menacing clicking sounds that came out of the monster's mouth in Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Cullen's death was announced on Thursday, August 27, but Cullen died on August 26 in his home in Los Angeles, his agent, Kevin Motley, told The Hollywood Reporter. An official cause of death has not been disclosed.

The SEC has joined the Big Ten in preventing former NFL players and other professional athletes from returning to play college sports. The conference announced the new policy Tuesday evening following a meeting of the conference's presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in Birmingham, Alabama.
The new policy was passed unanimously after a 16-0 vote by SEC presidents. The rule's three provisions prohibit former pros from returning to campus. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has been given the authority to penalize any program that breaks the new rules.
Tuesday's policy announcement from the SEC also comes less than 24 hours after the conference's presidents and chancellors released a statement voicing their opposition to former student-athletes returning to the college ranks after competing professionally.

Descartes Systems Group announced Monday that it has acquired Tai, a TMS provider for freight brokers, for $100 million. The deal was funded with cash on hand.
California-based Tai's AI-powered platform oversees the entire shipment lifecycle, including quoting, sourcing, execution and invoicing. The TMS primarily executes truckload, less-than-truckload, drayage and cross-border shipments.
"The acquisition expands our transportation management capabilities for freight brokers and adds valuable transaction, carrier and shipment execution data to the Descartes Global Logistics NetworkTM," said Andrew Wimer, ******* ociate general manager of transportation management at Descartes.
The Canadian company continues to expand its offering through acquisitions. It has executed 34 deals since 2017.

On August 7, Kodiak Gas Services (NYSE:KGS) held its second-quarter 2026 earnings call, and the numbers backed up the excitement. Revenue climbed 21% year-over-year to $391 million, while adjusted EBITDA hit a company record of $217 million, up 22% from a year earlier. Adjusted net income landed at $54 million, or $0.55 per diluted share. Management used the call to lay out how Kodiak plans to turn a compression business already running near full capacity into a much bigger power infrastructure company by 2030.
Kodiak's core contract compression business kept climbing. The company ended the quarter with 4.4 million revenue-generating horsepower and fleet utilization of 98.2%, and it priced that equipment at $23.80 per horsepower, a 4.5% increase from a year ago. Compression infrastructure adjusted gross margin reached 70% for a second straight quarter, up 170 basis points year-over-year, even as the company absorbed higher lube oil costs tied to the war in Iran. Kodiak has already locked in large horsepower compressor packages for 2027 through 2029 and is roughly 50% contracted for next year's deliveries, giving it unusual visibility into future revenue.
The bigger story is power. Kodiak signed a multiyear turbine supply deal with Baker Hughes for 1 gigawatt of capacity by 2030, with an option to grow that to 1.8 gigawatts, and it has secured about 1.8 gigawatts of power generation overall toward its 2-gigawatt target. The current power fleet is about 90% utilized, and the company executed a limited notice to proceed on a West Texas data center project tied to a hyperscaler, invoicing an initial deposit while it negotiates a long-term contract to begin supplying power in early 2027. Total capital spending among the top four hyperscalers rose roughly 80% year over year in the quarter, a demand backdrop Kodiak is positioning to serve.
Power infrastructure remains far less profitable than compression for now. The segment generated $33 million in revenue with an adjusted gross margin of 65%, well below compression's 70%, and building it out is expensive: Kodiak estimates roughly $1.2 million per megawatt before balance of plant costs. Power infrastructure growth capital spending alone was $134 million in the quarter. Net debt stood at about $2.6 billion at quarter-end, and while an $836 million equity raise in May pushed leverage down to 3.1 times, a company-record low, that debt load will grow as gigawatt-scale turbine and power projects come online through 2030. The West Texas data center deal, still under negotiation, also underscores how much of Kodiak's power growth depends on locking in long-term contracts with a small number of hyperscale counterparties.

It ends with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni both trying to move on.
But two years ago, the media frenzy surrounding their movie It Ends With Us was just beginning. Based on Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name, the film—which Lively and Baldoni starred in and he also directed—debuted in theaters Aug. 9, 2024. And while social media users sensed tension between the two actors after the premiere and press tour, fans never anticipated the contentious legal battle that started just four months later.
Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, his production company Wayfarer Studios and several ******* ociates in December 2024, accusing them of launching a smear campaign to ruin her reputation in retaliation of her voicing concern about ******* ual harassment she said she experienced on the film's set from him and others. Baldoni and Wayfarer's legal team vehemently denied the allegations.
Then in January 2025, Baldoni, Wayfarer and others filed a lawsuit against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds and her publicist in which they accused them of defamation and extortion. Based on Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name, the film—which Lively and Baldoni starred in and he also directed—debuted in theaters Aug. 9, 2024. And while social media users sensed tension between the two actors after the premiere and press tour, fans never anticipated the contentious legal battle that started just four months later.
Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, his production company Wayfarer Studios and several ******* ociates in December 2024, accusing them of launching a smear campaign to ruin her reputation in retaliation of her voicing concern about ******* ual harassment she said she experienced on the film's set from him and others. When it comes to Chicago Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon, the one word that encapsulates his current injury situation is "frustration."
Gordon, a former second-round pick, was hampered by soft tissue injuries last season, playing in just three regular-season games with two stints on injured reserve. After playing in two postseason games, the arrow was pointed up for Gordon, who's elevated the defense when he's on the field.
But Gordon suffered yet another soft tissue injury -- a calf injury, as confirmed by general manager Ryan Poles -- that held him out of the offseason program and has him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start training camp. There's also no current timetable for his return.
"Obviously, he's frustrated," Poles said Tuesday. "We're frustrated. Everybody here is putting their time and effort into getting him back."

Beijing lashed out at the European Union after the latter fined AliExpress, the largest Chinese e-commerce platform in the bloc, more than half a billion euros over the uncurbed sale of counterfeit goods on its site.

According to the Financial Times, the consumer goods giant has set its sights on acquiring Thorne, a U.S. dietary supplements brand. L Catterton, Thorne's private equity owner, has initiated a sale process that has attracted multiple potential buyers, of which Unilever is one.
The asking price, $4 billion, would dwarf the $680 million L Catterton paid to take Thorne private in 2023 — a deal that would yield enormous gains for the LVMH-backed firm. Thorne, which has been in operation since 1984, is on track for $650 million in annual revenues and offers products such as magnesium and omega-3 supplements. Since coming under L Catterton's control, Thorne has posted compounded annual revenue growth exceeding 30 percent.
Consumer healthcare group Haleon has also submitted a bid for Thorne, according to Reuters. A Haleon spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumor or speculation. Unilever and L Catterton both declined to comment.

Daveigh Chase, a former child actor known for voicing Lilo in Disney's animated Lilo & Stitch and playing Samara in The Ring, has died. She was 35.
"Daveigh was the sweetest woman on the planet and this is a huge loss to all of us," John Ryan Jr., a representative for Chase, told Yahoo. "Daveigh was one of my best friends for the last 17 years and we've managed her for over a decade. We were in the middle of a documentary about her during this tragic passing."
TMZ was first to report Chase's death. Her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, told TMZ that she died on Tuesday after battling both meningitis and an infection in her blood. He said it had led to septic shock. Hernandez told the outlet that she was hospitalized for malnutrition earlier in June.
"She was the greatest. She loved cats. She worked with cat rescues with us. She was very to herself, " Ryan told the BBC. "She was not very Hollywood. She'd rather eat at Bob's Big Boy and go home with the cats. She loved acting but wasn't into the fame scene."
Chase began her Hollywood career in a 1998 episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Over the years, she's had guest appearances on numerous TV shows, including CSI, Cold Case and Without a Trace. Most recently, the Bears' Board of Governors voted to move forward with pursuing a stadium in Hammond, Indiana, a move that would take the Bears out of Chicago, where they've called home since 1971, and even further, take them out of Illinois, which they've called home for over 100 years.
With many legendary players throughout the franchise's history, there are some who feel quite strongly about the Bears' future stadium plans, including linebacker Brian Urlacher. Recently, Urlacher discussed the ongoing saga with his former team and directed his frustration and political leaders in Illinois, citing their lack of care about keeping the team in the state of Illinois.
"I just don't see how as a state legislator, governor, city mayor, how you can let this team leave the state of Illinois or even be a topic of discussion," Urlacher said, via FOX's Jackson Thompson. "You do what you have to do to keep the Bears here, we have the best fans in the world, I'd do what I have to do to keep them in the state of Illinois. They had Arlington Heights planned out, find a way to keep them there, (politicians) just don't care."

A man claiming to be Chase's boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, told TMZ that the former child star had died from meningitis and an infection in her blood, after being hospitalised in Los Angeles for malnutrition earlier this month.
Just prior to the actor's death, Hernandez set up a GoFundMe in her name, but Chase's longtime manager, John Ryan, repudiated his claims.
"Apparently, a man claiming to be her 'boyfriend' that none of us friends or her family has heard of has set up a GoFundMe. I can confirm Daveigh has a trust account set up at SAG to cover all costs," Ryan told The New York Post.
Chase won an Annie Award for outstanding voice acting in an animated feature production for her turn as Lilo, and went on to lend her voice to several spinoffs, including Stitch! The Movie in 2003, Disney Channel's Lilo & Stitch: The Series also in 2003, and Leroy & Stitch in 2006.
