CINCINNATI (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their 14th consecutive playoff berth with a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night behind Tarik Skubal's seven shutout innings and home runs by Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernández.
Los Angeles tied the record set by Atlanta from 1991 through 2005.
The two-time defending World Series champions cut their magic number to three for a fifth straight NL West ****** le and 13th in 14 seasons. The Dodgers became the third team ****** ured of a playoff spot after Milwaukee and Tampa Bay.
Skubal (10-7) allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one as he gained his second win against Cincinnati in seven days. Skubal allowed two runs in 7 1/3 innings in a 3-2 victory on Sept. 8.
He is 3-2 with a 2.52 ERA in eight starts since the Dodgers (91-59) acquired him from Detroit Tigers on Aug. 2.

For a quick reminder of what makes a team with the oldest lineup in the majors the continued favorite to win a third straight World Series – even with one unicorn tied behind its back – take a long, close look at this week's series at Great American Ball Park.
Or for mercy's sake, if you're a Cincinnati Reds fan, just read about it here.
The Los Angeles Dodgers send as many Cy Young Awards to the mound for starts against the Reds this week as there are games in the series. And that doesn't even count who's listed for Thursday's series finale (somebody they call TBA).
Two of the four CYAs belong to left-hander Tarik Skubal, the former Detroit Tigers ace the Dodgers acquired at the trade deadline, who started this week's opener.
For the second time in a week Skubal rolled the Reds, this time pitching seven scoreless innings in a 4-1 win that clinched the Dodgers' 14th consecutive playoff berth.

Hits were at a premium with both sides combining for seven, and the Dodgers made the most of theirs, out-homering the Reds two-to-one and relying on Tarik Skubal's best performance as a Dodger to secure a 4-1 win. While Reds starter Nick Lodolo was responsible for all four runs in his seven innings, it doesn't necessarily reflect just how effectively he held down this potent Dodgers lineup for large periods of the game—especially dealing with such an ungrateful task.
It didn't take more than a couple of hitters to find out, or at least get a glimpse of the type of performance Skubal was about to bring to the mound. Facing Cincinnati's most dangerous hitter, Elly De La Cruz, Skubal was down 3-0 in the count following two bad misses, remembering that De La Cruz took him deep last week. The Dodgers' starter not only got back in the count and punched out De La Cruz, but almost as impressively, he did so in a manner of simply imposing his will that few starting pitchers can even hope to accomplish. Skubal threw three straight heaters, none of them particularly dotted, two up and one down, almost as if indicating that today he'd do as he pleased and the Reds were mere spectators to it.
That initial at-bat against De La Cruz was also indicative of the approach that Skubal would carry into this game. Whether due to a lack of feel for a particular off-speed pitch or, more likely, from an adjustment after seeing the Reds' swings against the four-seamer, Skubal went to that pitch far more often than he normally does—throwing it 44 percent of the time across seven scoreless innings, needing just 90 pitches to do so.
The first and only time the Reds managed to put multiple players on base against Skubal came in the fifth inning, when Juan Brito singled, and J.J. Bleday walked, later moving to second and third on a wild pitch. In a nine-pitch at-bat, Hector Rodríguez would go down on a four-seam fastball, this one up and well outside the zone. In fact, each of Skubal's first seven punchouts came on heaters.
Offensively, the Dodgers made the most of their rare hits count, securing just three in seven innings against a dialed-in Nick Lodolo. Unfortunately for the Reds starter, both of the hits he allowed were home runs, first a solo shot to Kyle Tucker in the second and, a couple of innings later, a two-run bomb to Teoscar Hernández.

MLB standings 2026: Updated playoff bracket, magic numbers through Sept. 12 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It will still take some time for the leaves to change colors, but the chase for October is upon us.
The MLB postseason, which actually begins in late September, will be framed as a battle between David and Goliath, with 11 Davids and one Goliath: the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the Dodgers haven't looked unbeatable in the regular season, they have positioned themselves as the villains after following back-to-back championships with the trade deadline acquisition of Tarik Skubal.
Everyone else, whether in a big market or a small market, will enter the postseason as some degree of an underdog. After the Blue Jays nearly dethroned the Dodgers last fall, could 2026 be the year a different team climbs to the top?

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently revealed that it is unlikely that Shohei Ohtani will pitch again this season, and the four-time MVP also admitted that he will focus on hitting for the rest of the year.
Ohtani was having a stellar year on the mound, posting a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts. He had gone at least six innings 13 times, and losing him in the rotation is a big blow. For most teams, losing a starter who can consistently go six innings with a sub-2.00 ERA would be like losing an ace. However, that's not the case for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers still have Tarik Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski and Eric Lauer. The question is, who will their postseason starters be?
Lauer is currently on the injured list, but has been solid for the Dodgers this year. However, it's unlikely he starts in October. Sasaki has looked dominant since the Dodgers got him a bigger glove and tweaked some of his mechanics, but he is currently on the injured list with a blister. Wrobleski was an All-Star this year, but has struggled as of late, and his innings count could essentially force him into a bullpen role for October.

This weekend marks a big opportunity for the Cleveland Guardians to push for a postseason spot as they welcome the floundering Detroit Tigers for a four-game set.
The series begins with a split doubleheader Friday, the opener a makeup of a game rained out on June 14. Cleveland will try to continue its strong play of late, which has seen the Guardians not only move into AL wild card position but also narrow their deficit to the White Sox in the division race.
They're catching the Tigers at the right time, with the slim postseason hopes Detroit harbored after dealing Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize at the trade deadline evaporating amid a series of ugly losses this week.
With two games on tap Friday, here's everything you need to know to watch.

The Dodgers stared in the eyes of a third straight defeat, but a walk-off double by Teoscar Hernández lifted the Dodgers to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
The Cardinals were the first to strike against Tarik Skubal, as after St. Louis put the first two men on with a pair of singles, Joshua Báez smacked the third single of the inning through the right side to bring home José Fermín.
Skubal managed to work a scoreless second inning with a pair of bookend strikeouts while leaving two men on, but the Cardinals broke through in the top of the third with a pair of two-out singles from Leo Bernal and Ramón Urías, plating Iván Herrera and doubling the Cardinal lead. Skubal found himself in a groove over his next two innings, but once again put two men on in top of the sixth inning. After striking out Nathan Church for the second out of the inning, Dave Roberts went to the bullpen, pulling the left-hander after 5 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals accounted for 10 hits against Skubal— all singles— which tied his career high for the most hits allowed in a single start. It was the first time Skubal couldn't complete six full innings since he tossed five against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 11. The Cardinals wouldn't get an extra-base hit until Jordan Walker's double against Evan Phillips in the top of the seventh inning.
For a Dodgers team that struggled to hit with guys in scoring position the game prior, Thursday's matchup replicated those same misfortunes. The Dodgers scratched across a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the first inning, third inning and fifth inning against rookie Quinn Mathews, but each time, the offense found a way to be their own obstacle. The Dodgers were able to tack on one run against Mathews, with a wild pitch to Freddie Freeman in the fifth inning sailing past Herrera to plate Tommy Edman in the fifth.

Major League Baseball's trade deadline always focuses on the loudest teams and the loudest names. Tampa Bay missed on Tarik Skubal and pivoted to Freddy Peralta instead. A month later, that consolation prize is beginning to look suspiciously like exactly what the Rays needed.

Peralta wasn't good in New York.
He carried a 4.99 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 113 2/3 innings before the Mets dealt him to Tampa Bay on August 2 for three prospects – Aidan Smith, Gary Gill Hill and Émilien Pitre. All three ranked among Tampa Bay's Top 30 prospects.

Tigers' Kevin McGonigle gets huge update in AL Rookie of the Year poll originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
While the 2026 season for the Detroit Tigers might not be going like they expected, especially with the trades of Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, there is one major positive takeaway from this year.
Kevin McGonigle, the top Tigers prospect coming into this year, has been better than advertised this season. He's a true star and has been incredible all year long.
For the American League Rookie of the Year race, MLB.com's Jason Foster shared a poll of various MLB experts that has McGonigle as the runaway favorite, with no other player remotely close to him for this end-of-season award.
1. Kevin McGonigle, Tigers (186 total points; 30 first-place votes)," Foster shared. "McGonigle has been the clear favorite in the AL for a while, and it's hard to argue with it because he just does a lot of things well."

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal looked comfortable sitting in the first-base dugout in the stadium he called home for his first seven MLB seasons – minus a few inconveniences that come from playing for the visiting team.
"I've never been on this side of the clubhouse. So when I first got here, I'm like, 'which way is the field?'" he said. "It's much farther down there. There's a lot more steps going on, but I guess it's good for your health."
The setting was familiar, but the threads were not. Skubal wore his usual headband and sleeveless hoodie, but both were dipped in Dodger blue instead of stamped with the Olde English D. The night before, he pitched six brilliant innings in the Dodgers' 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers, returning to Comerica Park less than a month after the Tigers traded him to Los Angeles at the deadline for three prospects.
Skubal didn't have a say in where he went. But based on his interaction with the media before Detroit's game with the Dodgers on Saturday, Aug. 29, he looks to have landed in a situation he really likes.
"[The Dodgers] have won the last two World Series for a reason. It's not a mistake," he said. "You watch [first baseman Freddie Freeman's] ground ball routine, he does the same thing every single day. I think those routines matter, and they translate to the field, stuff they do in the cage, the way pitchers prepare ... no little thing is overlooked, and I think that's what makes good teams really good."

DETROIT – How are hitters supposed to be able to figure out Tarik Skubal when his pitches sometimes even fool the Hawk-Eye technology that Statcast uses to measure spin and identify pitches?
The initial reading on Max Clark's fifth-inning, RBI triple was 99-mph sinker. It was quickly corrected to a four-seamer.
"His four-seamer was cutting like crazy," Clark said.
That could be the reason for the initial read of a sinker. It had that type of action.
"His sinker was really working," Clark said. "We'd talked before the game about how he'd gotten away from it once he went to LA. I don't know if they didn't like it as much or they were tinkering with it. But I got a couple of them."

Hannah Waddingham has developed a red carpet style that is glamorous, confident and unapologetically feminine. Whether she is wearing an extravagant ball gown, sleek tailoring or a playful mini dress, the Ted Lasso star consistently embraces dramatic silhouettes and bold details while making each look feel distinctly her own.
At the 2022 Emmy Awards, Waddingham delivered a memorable princess moment in a strapless Dolce & Gabbana gown. Its voluminous pink tulle skirt and jeweled bodice brought plenty of drama, while glittering sneakers hidden underneath added an unexpected practical touch. She later changed direction at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, choosing a metallic green Tom Ford dress with a figure hugging silhouette and sheer detailing. For the Ted Lasso season three premiere, she demonstrated her versatility in a flowing Tarik Ediz halter jumpsuit.
Her 2024 appearances pushed the glamour even further. At the BAFTAs, Waddingham wore an Oscar de la Renta creation featuring intricate floral embroidery and an elegant high neckline. She embraced full Hollywood glamour at the Emmys in a shimmering halter gown finished with a dramatic feathered train. At the SAG Awards, a red Tony Ward gown combined off the shoulder styling, elegant draping and a thigh high slit, while her Golden Globes appearance brought a darker mood through sheer fabric, corsetry and black lace.
Waddingham continued experimenting with color and texture in 2025. At the Cannes Film Festival screening of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, she arrived in a striking pink Elie Saab gown with a sweeping, voluminous train. She later offered something completely different at the Los Angeles premiere of Smurfs, wearing a Stella McCartney denim dress accented with delicate white lace and coordinated white pumps.
By 2026, Waddingham was still finding new ways to balance sophistication with playfulness. For the Ted Lasso season four premiere, she chose an Alice + Olivia mini dress decorated with oversized red floral embroidery. It was shorter and more playful than many of her grand red carpet gowns, but carried the same unmistakable confidence.

Tarik Skubal had not even thrown a pitch Friday night before Detroit made its feelings pretty clear.
As Skubal walked to the bullpen mound around 6:32 p.m. ET to begin warming up for his first start at Comerica Park as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, fans throughout the ballpark rose to their feet and applauded the former Tigers ace.
Then came the real moment.
After Skubal completed his bullpen session and began walking back toward the Dodgers dugout, the Tigers played a video tribute to Skubal on the Comerica Park scoreboard.
As you can see in the video below, Skubal appeared emotional (biting his upper lip) as he made his way toward the dugout, while the still-filling stadium gave him another warm ovation.

The Detroit Tigers are set for their most-anticipated series of the regular season.
The Tigers (62-71) are facing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers (80-54) on Friday, Aug. 28, at Comerica Park in Detroit (6:40 p.m. ET, DSN). This is the first game of a star-studded, three-game weekend series that should bring a packed house each day to the park.
First up for the Tigers is former lefty ace Tarik Skubal (8-7, 2.91 ERA), who is starting for the Dodgers on Friday night. The Tigers traded Skubal to the Dodgers on Aug. 1 in exchange for three prospects, with Skubal now set to pitch his first game at Comerica Park as a visitor.

There are still two months of baseball left to be played. We have a month left in the regular season followed by four rounds of the 2026 MLB postseason.
I know the inclination is to just hand the championship to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but let's hold on a few minutes before doing that. They aren't the only MLB team built best for a deep postseason run, so let's dig into those teams.

Yes, I know, here's the low-hanging fruit. Shohei Ohtani isn't pitching and hasn't since July 3rd, but who cares? The Dodgers simply traded for Tarik Skubal and activated Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow off the Injured List. In reality, all they need are those three pitchers anyway to make it through the postseason.

Tarik Skubal is poised to make his return to Detroit, albeit this time in a new jersey.
The left-handed ace hasn't pitched at Comerica Park since July 29, but that was as a member of the Detroit Tigers.
Skubal was traded ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers got back three minor league players: Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith. The trade was criticized on social media after such a low return was announced for such a marquee player.
The southpaw is under contract only for the remainder of the 2026 season. Detroit knew that Skubal was approaching free agency and hadn't been able to come to terms with him. Rather than risking him walking for nothing, the Tigers opted to trade him.
Now, Skubal will hit free agency this offseason, barring a blockbuster extension with the Dodgers.

Tuesday's contest against the Atlanta Braves featured a disappointing ending where the Dodgers left the tying runner on third base in a 4-3 defeat, snapping their six-game winning streak.
Before the uneventful finish, Tyler Glasnow made his return to the mound, making his first start since May 6 against the Houston Astros. Although he allowed three earned runs in the first inning, Glasnow, like Tarik Skubal on Saturday, managed to settle in and didn't allow another run the rest of the way. Glasnow ended his night tossing five innings against Altanta, allowing six hits and those three runs while striking out seven and not allowing a walk.
Glasnow discussed his change in sequencing after a laborious first inning, helping him settle into a groove where he struck out six over four shutout innings onward, per Courtney Hollmon of MLB.com.
"I think just switching up a little bit," Glasnow said. "I think it was pretty fastball-heavy the first inning. A little bit predictable. Not a ton of hard-hit ****** , but it's just how it goes sometimes. But I think coming out in the second, I just felt more in rhythm and my slider was working a lot better. … The slider felt good today, too. So I just tried to start some guys off with it and throw it in middle counts and just not be so predictable."
After spending parts of five seasons with the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks, Alek Thomas has had a nice start to his time as a Dodger. Thomas put the Dodgers on the board in the second inning of Tuesday's matchup with an RBI single, and the outfielder has a .300 average with three RBI and a walk over his first three games with his new team.

Leeds United return to the City Ground on Tuesday full of confidence, Anton Stach's stoppage-time free-kick having secured a 1-0 win in the same fixture just four days earlier. Daniel Farke will be keen to reach the Carabao Cup third round for the first time as Leeds boss.
Willy Gnonto and Gabriel Gudmundsson are both out with muscle injuries, Gnonto having picked his up in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United in Dublin. Ilia Gruev remains a longer-term absentee with a knee issue, though he has partially reintegrated into training, and his involvement in the matchday squad is unclear.
Farke confirmed everyone else in his squad is available for selection, including summer signing Nico Elvedi, who was cleared to play before the weekend and made the bench for the Premier League opener without being used. Noah Okafor's fitness levels remain worth monitoring, having missed the entire pre-season after an extended break following Switzerland's World Cup run.
Elvedi is expected to come into the back three for his first Leeds involvement, with Joe Rodon and Tarik Muharemovic retained alongside him and Jaka Bijol among those to make way. James Justin and Jayden Bogle offer athletic options at wing-back capable of managing the quick turnaround, while Ao Tanaka could be given a rare start in place of Anton Stach, who is expected to be held back as an attacking option from the bench. Farke is likely to freshen his attack too, with Daniel James, Felix Nmecha and Noah Okafor in line to lead the line ahead of Saturday's starters.
Leeds United possible starting XI (3-4-3): Perri; Elvedi, Rodon, Muharemovic; Bogle, Tanaka, Longstaff, Justin; James, Nmecha, Okafor

Welcome home, Tarik Skubal.
The Detroit Tigers are scheduled to face Skubal, their former ace, next weekend when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Comerica Park on Aug. 28-30.
The left-hander, who on Saturday night made his fourth start for the Dodgers, was traded from the Tigers late on Aug. 1, a little under 48 hours before the MLB trade deadline.
Skubal, the reigning two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, is in line to start next Saturday in the middle matchup of the three-game series at 1:10 p.m. opposite Tigers right-hander Drew Anderson.
Skubal is 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA for the Dodgers over 24 innings. He gave up three runs to Pittsburgh in the first inning Saturday, Aug. 22, in Los Angeles, then shut the Pirates down the rest of the way over seven innings with 11 strikeouts to one walk and five hits (106 pitches). The Dodgers backed him with four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to give him his first victory in the National League.

The Houston Rockets have had players donning a total of 52 different jersey numbers (and have one not part of any numerical series for Houston ****** istant coach and general manager Carroll Dawson) since their founding at the start of the 1967-68 season, worn by just under 500 players in the course of Rockets history.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that Emmet Sheehan, the promising right-hander, is headed back to the minor leagues after a brief stint with the team.
Sheehan, after getting moved down when Tarik Skubal arrived, had two outings down in Triple-A before coming back to the Dodgers recently for a long relief role.
However, the team is reversing course and giving him another chance to work down in the minors, likely as a starter.

The Detroit Tigers spent the trade deadline loading up on young pitching.
Less than three weeks later, a frustrating pattern has developed.
Right-hander Brady Smith, one of the three prospects Detroit acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tarik Skubal, was placed on the seven-day injured list by High-A West Michigan on Thursday. Minor League Baseball's official transaction log confirmed the move after Smith left his Aug. 15 start with an apparent issue involving his throwing arm.
The Tigers have not announced the specific nature or severity of Smith's injury.
That distinction matters. An IL placement is concerning. It is not an invitation to diagnose an arm injury from the couch.

Tarik Skubal is coming back to Comerica Park next weekend, and he apparently won't be spending the entire series sitting in the visiting dugout.
The former Detroit Tigers ace is expected to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers during their three-game series against Detroit from Aug. 28-30, according to a Thursday report from The Detroit News. Skubal is set to take the mound on Aug. 29 at 1:10 p.m. ET.
That takes what was already going to be an unusual homecoming and turns it into something considerably more interesting.
Skubal was traded to Los Angeles earlier this month in the blockbuster that sent outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith to Detroit. MLB confirmed the three-player return when the deal became official on Aug. 2.
Now Tigers hitters are going to have to deal with a problem they spent years watching other teams try to solve.

The Whites managed to earn a dominant 4-0 win over Augsburg in a pre-season friendly match recently, which should give them some confidence going into this game.
Daniel Farke will set his team in a 3-4-3 formation and is expected to name a strong first team for this clash. Dominic Calvert-Lewin will get the nod to spearhead Leeds United's attack up top.
James Trafford will feature in goal for the Whites as he looks to secure a clean sheet at the City Ground this weekend. Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Tarik Muharemović will make up Leeds' back three. All three of them would have to maintain a good defensive shape at the back if they want to keep the Nottingham attackers frustrated during the 90 minutes.
Sebastiaan Bornauw will provide cover for the defensive positions on the bench.
