MLB standings 2026: Updated playoff bracket, magic numbers through Sept. 12 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It will still take some time for the leaves to change colors, but the chase for October is upon us.
The MLB postseason, which actually begins in late September, will be framed as a battle between David and Goliath, with 11 Davids and one Goliath: the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the Dodgers haven't looked unbeatable in the regular season, they have positioned themselves as the villains after following back-to-back championships with the trade deadline acquisition of Tarik Skubal.
Everyone else, whether in a big market or a small market, will enter the postseason as some degree of an underdog. After the Blue Jays nearly dethroned the Dodgers last fall, could 2026 be the year a different team climbs to the top?

NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) and On Holding (NYSE:ONON) are two firms competing with each other in a David versus Goliath scenario. Both the stocks are down by more than 35% year-to-date. Starting from the former, Cramer has discussed the firm several times over the past couple of months. He has focused on the firm's ongoing turnaround efforts and shifted his opinion. Throughout 2025, Cramer cited faith in NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE)'s CEO and the turnaround, but earlier this year shifted his opinion. As for On Holding (NYSE:ONON), the CNBC TV host decided to "pass" on the shares in May. On August 17th, he shared his take on why he changed mind on NKE and commented on ONON's management change:
"I was shocked at Tapestry, I went to see them earlier, we had a great interview about it. On, no. I think that we are fundamentally saying, alright, sneakers, just not a great business. I talked about my problems with Nike in my Club meeting on Thursday. Well I like to start with the most stupid things that I do. That way I get it through. Like why, people are going to say, hey why doesn't Cramer talk about the dumbest thing he did? Well I put it right at the top! . . .But I think that Nike is, there are a lot of people that I got pushed back on Nike, people say, Nike's too cheap, you shouldn't have given up on it. But I gave up on it higher. On, was like the old days. When you realized that. . .it didnt' have it. Which was rather amazing. Look, I when they shuffle management, unless it's L3Harris, they usually shuffle management for performance."
For NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE), as it should be obvious, the central theme for the firm is its turnaround. The firm's fiscal Q4 earnings released in June saw it beat **** yst revenue and earnings estimates. Crucially, NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE)'s warehouse figures showed improvement. In his previous appearances, Cramer has commented that the firm lost traction in the physical store market by losing out on shelf **** e and focusing on digital channels instead. NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE)'s wholesale revenue grew by 4% in Q4 to sit at $6.6 billion. Additionally, the firm also posted no inventory growth and an 890 basis point increase in its gross margins to indicate cost control.
Yet, while NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) might be addressing its structural issues and managing its costs, the firm is struggling with growth in emerging markets due to inflation. Additionally, a large portion of the margin improvement came courtesy of tariff recovery while its Converse brand and the digital business continue to struggle. As a result, tailwinds in the shares depend on whether the firm will be able to manage inventories, costs and shelf market share.

Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF, FRA:I8A) this week outlined continued commercial progress across its Stereax and Goliath solid-state battery businesses, with chief executive Graeme Purdy highlighting the company's transition into revenue generation alongside several commercial catalysts expected over the next 12 to 18 months.
Purdy, in an interview in the Proactive studio, said the most significant development for the Stereax business had been its move into commercial production, with Ilika now supplying commercial-grade electrodes to Cirtec for incorporation into the M300 medical device product, which is expected to reach the market later this year.
He said the company had already recognised approximately £100,000 in revenue during the previous financial year, describing it as an early indicator of future growth. Purdy added that a second revenue stream is expected to emerge through royalty payments once products incorporating Stereax batteries are sold to end customers.
Here, we take a closer look at what was said when Graeme Purdy joined the Proactive studio.
Proactive: You've described the past year as one of strong commercial progress. What do you see as the standout achievements across both the Stereax and Goliath programmes?

CHICAGO — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti offered plenty of flowers to the rest of the conference at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday.
He reserved some of his highest praise for Ohio State.
"They're a goliath," Cignetti said. "There's some goliaths in the Big Ten that have been goliaths for a long time."
Cignetti later expanded on his answer to include the likes of Michigan, USC and Penn State in that same category, while opening the door for a natural follow-up question: Is Indiana on the verge of joining those ranks?
"We were the national champs of 2025 and 27-2 the last two years," Cignetti said. "Longest home win streak in college football. Longest win streak in college football. I don't know. You guys write those stories."

Three weeks ago, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) and **** e infrastructure goliath, **** e Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) (NASDAQ: SPCX), etched its name in Wall Street's record books.
Prior to **** eX, no public company had ever raised more than $29.4 billion from an initial public offering (IPO), including the underwriters' option. **** eX practically tripled this figure by raising $85.7 billion from its June 12 IPO. It also made **** eX one of America's largest businesses.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
But it'll take a lot more than IPO buzz and history-making moments to convince Wall Street that **** eX is a stock retail investors should own. Despite several upcoming catalysts, including **** eX's inclusion in the growth-focused Nasdaq-100, a massive potential fleecing of retail investors awaits, courtesy of the company's accelerated share lockup period.
In addition to the largest-ever IPO capital raise, **** eX's debut was unique in how few shares the company sold. While the 555.6 million shares sold might sound like a lot, it's less than 5% of the company's outstanding shares. Typically, companies that are going public sell 10% to 25% of their outstanding shares.

A classic David versus Goliath encounter will take centre stage at the World Cup on Friday as tiny Cape Verde face Lionel Messi and Argentina with a place in the last 16 at stake.
Cape Verde, the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout rounds, face the defending champions in Miami dreaming of pulling off what would be the greatest upset in World Cup history.
The Atlantic archipelago have become one of the fairytale stories of this year's expanded 48-team tournament, confounding expectations by earning a draw with Spain before squeezing into the last 32 ahead of Group H rivals Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
Argentina, who breezed into the knockout rounds with the help of six goals from captain Messi, will be expected to swat aside the African qualifiers to move one step closer to their dream of back-to-back World Cup ******* les.
But Cape Verde insist they will not be overawed by the occasion and the prospect of sharing a field with the reigning world champions and eight-time Ballon D'Or winner Messi.

Lionel Messi and defending champion Argentina will look to claim one of the final spots in the round of 16 at the World Cup on Friday night when they face Cape Verde in Miami Gardens, Florida.
To no one's surprise, Messi has been one of the biggest stars of the tournament with six goals, tied for the most with France’s Kylian Mbappe. Messi is now the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with 19 goals, but Mbappe only one behind after scoring twice in France’s 3-0 win over Sweden.
Messi, however, has played one fewer game at this year's tournament and would seemingly have a golden opportunity to take a step toward winning the Golden Boot when Argentina faces a Cape Verde team devoid of any star players.
The Argentina-Cape Verde match is essentially soccer's version of David vs. Goliath.
“I believe we can do a great thing here,” Cape Verde backup defender Stopira said through a translator on Thursday. “And this is no exception. This match is no exception.”
