BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Motor neurone disease has not stopped Jai Arrow's attempt to bring up a career milestone in Australia's National Rugby League.
Earlier this week, the NRL allowed an exception to its rules to allow the veteran forward a chance to be on the field for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in his 99th and 100th rugby league games for the club, if only for the first few seconds of the game.
Arrow was subsequently named co-captain and led South Sydney onto the field through a guard of honor for Saturday's game against the Gold Coast ****** ans Saturday, in an emotional scene that brought tears to players and fans alike.
The 31-year-old was visibly moved, frequently looking to the sky as he embraced several teammates while "You'll Never Walk Alone" played around the stadium.
As the referee signaled the start of the match, a brief pause allowed Arrow to be substituted without taking part in any play.

Tom O'Brien was a college basketball ***** istant at Bradley in 1967 when the opportunity arose to come back to coach at Cathedral, his alma mater.
O'Brien would leave a couple different times as coach, but never really did give up his connection to the school where he graduated from in 1949. O'Brien died on Aug. 17 at age 95.
"Tom had such a history with Cathedral, graduating from there and all the changes the school went through in good times and bad times, Tom was always part of it," said Steve Hodgson, who coached with O'Brien and then later succeeded him. "It goes even beyond that. There are so many families in the Catholic and Eastside community and people that I've heard from in the last week through Tom's passing that he touched."

Unfortunately for Elliot Anderson, his home debut for Manchester City only lasted 63 minutes. The England international was substituted due to cramp in the second half of Manchester City's 2-1 win over Bournemouth. However, it may have been Maresca's plan to take off Anderson around that time of the game anyway before cramp struck. While Anderson was on the pitch, he showed plenty of positive signs and it is easy to see how his strengths as a player will suit this Manchester City side.
Until Elliot Anderson was substituted after 63 minutes, he was nearly the best-performing player on the pitch for Manchester City against Bournemouth. Anderson played alongside Marc Guehi in the double pivot that Enzo Maresca prefers to use in midfield. With Marc Guehi playing in an unfamiliar role, Anderson was more than willing to drop in and offer Guehi an option when the makeshift midfielder had possession. That was pleasing to see and showed that Anderson had a great read on the situation at hand.
In terms of what Anderson offered in possession that really caught the eye. As per Anderson's pass map on SofaScore, the Manchester City midfielder received possession all over the pitch. When City had possession in the final third, he took up the 'Kevin De Bruyne' position on the right. Once Anderson and his teammates are on the same wavelength this should be a viable source for City to create chances and goals.
Where Elliot Anderson's radar was just off was with his long passing. He completed 1/4 but it was easy to see how much Anderson's ability to switch the play and break the lines will be vital to Enzo Maresca's side. Also, Elliot Anderson's set-piece delivery looms as a major weapon. He should have had his first Manchester City ***** ist just after halftime as his pinpoint corner was met by Marc Guehi. Unfortunately, Guehi headed a great chance from two yards out wide of the target. Despite this, Anderson's set-piece delivery should be a weapon that City profit off of.
One of the major strengths of Elliot Anderson's play is his ability to cover the pitch out of possession and win duels. With how Manchester City's win over Bournemouth played out, this wasn't a standout aspect of his performance. But you could still see how his energy and ability to work for his team out of possession will help shape Manchester City's rebuild midfield.

Liam Lawson earned an unexpected promotion to the main team last weekend for the Dutch Grand Prix, after Isack Hadjar sustained a fracture in his wrist during a practice session. As a result, Max Verstappen's teammate was unable to take part in the latest Formula 1 race at the Zandvoort circuit.
In announcing the temporary driver swap, Red Bull stated that Hadjar was expected to miss only the Dutch Grand Prix, with further evaluations to follow after the race to **** s his availability for the next round in Italy. GPblog has heard that Hadjar indicated internally last weekend in the Netherlands that his wrist already felt better than it had a few days earlier. The Frenchman is said to be optimistic about a swift return.
Should it become clear in the coming week that Hadjar is still not fit enough to race in Monza, Liam Lawson will once again step in for Red Bull Racing. With that possibility in mind, Red Bull has decided to keep the New Zealander with the team for the time being, so that he would arrive in Italy better prepared than he was in the Netherlands, if needed.
Lawson proved to be a fine substitute for Hadjar in Zandvoort. The 24-year-old driver finished seventh in the Grand Prix, which, given the relative performance of the cars, was exactly where Lawson could reasonably be expected to end up. Considering Lawson's performance, there seems to be no pressing need for Red Bull to rush Hadjar back into the car sooner than is advisable.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Pasindu Sooriyabandara scored an unbeaten half-century but India's Prasidh Krishna made a vital breakthrough to end an important partnership and have Sri Lanka in trouble at 130 for four at lunch on Day 3 of the second cricket test.
At the first interval Tuesday, Sri Lanka trailed India's first-innings total by 373 runs. Sooriyabandara was unbeaten on 65 and captain Dhananjaya de Silva was not out on 4.
India declared its first innings at 503 for nine on Day 2, helped by 117 runs from Devdutt Padikkal and Druv Jurel's unbeaten 115.

During his time at Manchester City, Nico Gonzalez didn't really put a foot wrong. He was signed during the January 2025 transfer window when Pep Guardiola's squad was in desperate need of midfield reinforcement. In the end, perhaps it is the right move for Manchester City to sell Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle. The Spanish midfielder should be an important player for them and he will get the opportunity to play regularly which wasn't going to arrive at City. That is probably the best move for all concerned despite it being an unpopular move.

Football has a habit of compressing an entire afternoon into a few seconds. At St Andrew's, Bristol City's performance will inevitably be remembered for two of them: one moment of extraordinary invention from Dom Ballard and one raised flag that left Michael Skubala describing the eventual penalty decision as "crazy".
Ballard's goal deserved to win any match. With his back to goal, the substitute met Rio Cardines' cross with an improvised flick that looped beyond James Beadle and into the Birmingham net.
It was audacious, instinctive and almost impossible to defend. The sort of finish that momentarily silences a large home crowd because everybody inside the ground needs a second to understand what they have just seen.

Encouragingly for Cristian Chivu, he still has several of his new summer signings to add into the mix: John Stones was only introduced as a late substitute and fellow Premier League recruits Spence and Curtis Jones were not even in the matchday squad.
Spence was in attendance to watch his new teammates earn victory on Saturday evening, and has caught the eye of fans across social media for his striking touchline attire.

Hull City have joined the race to sign Chelsea star Dario Essugo on loan this summer.
The Tigers are willing to sign the Portugal U-21 international until the end of the 2026-27 season, according to talkSPORT.
Chelsea have indicated that they are prepared to listen to loan offers for Essugo, who has been unable to really get going since joining them last summer.
The 21-year-old sustained a serious thigh injury in September 2025 that required surgery, keeping him sidelined until the second half of last season.
He made just eight substitute appearances for the Blues in his first season before making a handful of appearances under manager Xabi Alonso in pre-season this summer.

NEW DELHI: India made one change to their playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday, with Kuldeep Yadav missing out after failing to fully recover from a viral infection and Saransh Jain making his Test debut.

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first, with the hosts also handing Test debuts to Kamil Mishara and Pasindu Sooriyabandara.

India entered the second Test with an unassailable 1-0 lead after their 165-run victory in the series opener at Galle. However, Kuldeep's absence meant India had to alter their combination, with Jain coming into the XI as the spin-bowling allrounder.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Kuldeep remains unavailable for selection but could still be used in a specific situation.

"Mr Kuldeep Yadav has not fully recovered from his viral illness. He was unavailable for selection in the Playing XI for the second Test against Sri Lanka. However, he can take the field as a concussion substitute, if required," the BCCI said.
Gill also addressed Kuldeep's absence after winning the toss, confirming that an infection had ruled out the left-arm wristspinner.

"[Playing XI] Kuldeep, unfortunately, had some infections, so he misses out, and Saransh makes his debut for India," Gill said.

With Kuldeep unavailable, Jain received his first opportunity at Test level. The 33-year-old was presented his India cap by Ravindra Jadeja during the team's huddle before the start of play.

Jain becomes the first India player to make his international debut after turning 33 since Robin Singh in 1998.
Gill opted to bat after ******* sing the Colombo surface and felt it offered better batting conditions than the pitch in Galle.

"Batting first, yes. [On the pitch] It looks like a much harder, much better surface compared to Galle. Galle was also a very good wicket, but I think as the game went on, it got a little bit slower and the ball started to turn. We're expecting the same, but I think for the first two or three days, I think it'll be a really good wicket to bat on," Gill said.

Reflecting on India's dominant win in the first Test, Gill rated the team's performance highly but admitted there was still room for improvement.

"[How he would rate the Galle win] I would say probably a nine, because there's always room for improvement, and I think we played a pretty good match, a decent match. And obviously there were some areas where we could have got a little bit better, but, you know, this is Test cricket. It's very, very difficult to be able to have a near-perfect game because you're playing for five days, and to play that dominant and consistent cricket, especially in Test, is hard. But I think overall we had a pretty good match," Gill said.

All summer, the future of Claudio Echeverri appeared uncertain. The Argentinian playmaker endured a frustrating 2025-26 season. He went against Manchester City's advice to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the first half of last season. That move didn't pan out as Echeverri couldn't force his way into the Leverkusen lineup. He returned to City last January before being sent out on loan to Girona. Manchester City wanted Echeverri to spend last season at Girona. He showed flashes of quality while being used primarily as an impact substitute. Echeverri was a part of Manchester City's preseason tour of Asia where he showed brief glimpses of his talent.
Where Echeverri would play his football during the 2026-27 season hasn't been clear. Perhaps, until now. A new report indicates that Echeverri is set to stay at Manchester City for at least the first half of the 2026-27 season. Echeverri does have attributes that could be useful for Enzo Maresca's side, so it may be a wise move to keep him at City for the time being.

Typically, Claudio Echeverri operates as a number ten or as an attacking midfielder. Echeverri's clear strength is his ability to drive at defenders with his electrifying pace and mesmerizing dribbling ability. Claudio Echeverri can also pick out a defence splitting pass and he can create opportunities to score for himself and his teammates. Those attributes could be useful to Enzo Maresca's side. Echeverri's strongest attributes could also see him also play on either wing when required.
If, as reported, Claudio Echeverri remains at Manchester City for next season, it wouldn't be expected that he would be a starter. However, as a squad player, he could fulfil a role. Playing as an impact substitute against tired opponents could be in Echeverri's wheelhouse. His pace and ability to make something out of nothing could be useful for Enzo Maresca. That could be his role today as Manchester City take on Bournemouth given that City are short of options on the bench as they await to complete Enzo Maresca's squad in the transfer market.

Ideal way to kick off the season!
Bayern picked up right where they left off last season by winning the first trophy of the campaign, the German Super Cup, against rivals Dortmund.
And yet, the Bavarians were far from being in steamroller mode. They did manage to produce a very convincing first half, during which they scored twice, led by an already twice-decisive Olise: first with an ****** ist for Brown, who beat Kobel with a left-footed side-foot finish, then by getting on the scoresheet himself after a Bellingham turnover and a solo run capped with an outside-of-the-foot strike.

In the end, Dortmund had to wait until the 72nd minute, when substitute Fabio Silva managed to pull one back against a Bayern side that had become very passive. It was not enough, however, to stop the Bavarians from winning the 11th Super Cup in their history, despite a tense finish marked by Bensebaini's sending-off and a Beier shot (90+4) that sent a shiver through the entire stadium.
