Rory McIlroy's key to re-unlocking his golf swing?
Putter grips on his 7-iron and lob wedge.
McIlroy was spotted on the range at Bellerive hitting **** with Flat Cat putter grips attached at 45-degree angles to both clubs. He explained to Golf Channel's Kira Dixon on Thursday that his right arm was staying too straight in the backswing and was getting too far across the line at the top, not supporting the club like it should.
"I was trying to save it a lot," said McIlroy, who is coming off his worst finish in a no-cut tournament, a 66th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he ranked ahead of just three of the 68 other competitors in strokes gained off the tee and 35th in strokes gained approach.
The putter grips serve as a training aid for McIlroy's right hand, helping him get the feel of where the club needs to be hallway back, which then corrects everything else. McIlroy discovered the solution with his instructor Michael Bannon upon returning home last Sunday evening.

Princess Margaret was the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth. She earned a reputation as the rebellious, free-spirited counterpart of her more serious sibling.
Known for her wit, bold fashions, and star-studded social network, Margaret set the blueprint for future glamorous royals like Princess Diana.
Margaret died on February 9, 2002, at age 71, following a series of strokes.
Princess Margaret knew all her best angles.
With a fashion-photographer husband and a free-spirited approach to public life, the younger sister and only sibling of Queen Elizabeth never shied away from the camera. One '60s snapshot shows her beaming as she shakes hands with The Beatles. Another, from the '70s, sees the royal casually stunning in a houndstooth plaid coat with a matching hood while watching the Badminton horse trials alongside husband Lord Snowdon.

Bryson DeChambeau appears to have had issues with the golf media all year, and this week it reached its boiling point.
Since missing the cut at The Masters, DeChambeau did not speak to the media at major championships all year. At The Open Championship, he hosted his own interview with a reporter, which he sent out to the media, and he declined to comment on his rules controversy after he was docked two strokes.
This frostiness continued at LIV Indianapolis. DeChambeau called a few members of the media the "mafia" when he arrived at the driving range. He's likely unhappy with the media coverage of LIV Golf over the last few months.
After that comment, DeChambeau was evidently unhappy with his golf swing and then had a media member who was filming him practice thrown out of the driving range. It wasn't the 32-year-old American's finest hour, but he might have made up for it after.

Aug. 17—GRAND FORKS — East Grand Forks' Brody Johnson will start his freshman golf season next week at Minnesota-Crookston with some momentum.
Johnson continued a strong summer on the course by winning the Grand Forks All-City Men's Championship at the Grand Forks Country Club on Sunday. He was tied for third after Day 1 at King's Walk with a 69 and followed up with a 68 for a two-day total of 137 — edging former Grand Forks Red River and UND golfer Nick Schaefer by two strokes.
Johnson is just 18 years old and played the all-city event for the third time. He finished in a tie for fourth last season.
"It's definitely a confidence booster," Johnson said of his summer ahead of starting at UMC. "There's nothing given to you in this sport and still have to work super hard. There's going to be 10 of us at Crookston, and I think the top six go to the first tournament. It's going to be a grind, but I definitely want to be playing in that first tournament. I know where my game's at, and now I see how the results go."
After Day 1 in the All-City event, Johnson was two shots behind Day 1 leader Matt Norby and one stroke behind Schaefer.

Aug. 17—MITCHELL — As the Mitchell High School boys golf program opens its 2026 season, there are opportunities available for the taking at the top of the roster.
Blessed with high levels of continuity and experience in recent years, the Kernels graduated four of the six players they took to the Class AA state tournament in 2025. Of those four, three were regular varsity golfers since they were freshmen.
While such dramatic roster turnover presents a new dynamic for MHS, it's brought a welcome side effect: Elevated competition.
"There are a lot of guys who think they could, and probably will, end up playing in the top six," said MHS coach Ryker Kreutzfeldt. "That just makes everybody better. Competition is the best motivator, and we have plenty of it."
Kreutzfeldt said that from an abnormally large nine-man senior class down to the middle school ranks, there are capable golfers itching to earn their shot at making one of the six varsity roster spots. However, at least two of those top golfers are likely already known, as seniors Asher Dannenbring and Jordan Meyerink are the two returning players from the state tournament roster. Last season, Dannenbring maintained an 18-hole average of 73.1 strokes. Meyerink had an average of 83.3 strokes, but his low round of 74 was fourth-best on the team.

No matter what happened Sunday, Alexander Zannes knew he could live with the outcome.
"(It was) just like, 'Hey, if I win, I win,'" he said. "Life is going to go on, and I'm happy to be out here and able to play in this kind of stuff still."
He got a result to be plenty happy with, too.
Zannes won the 85th Annual Greater Albuquerque Men's City Golf Championship by two strokes, carding a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish 11 under on the week.
The 38-year-old commercial real estate broker and Valley High School graduate climbed into contention on the strength of a blistering second-round 8-under 64 on Saturday at Ladera Golf Course, where he used to work as a cart boy in his youth. He finished the job Sunday at Los Altos with a front nine that saw him make five birdies and four bogeys before "holding it together" through a nerve-riddled back nine.

The 30-year-old won the tournament by eight strokes, and finished nine clear of his good friend Burns.

Scottie Scheffler's dominant performance in winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis powered him past Rory McIlroy and brought him about $1 million away from catching Tiger Woods for the highest career PGA Tour earnings of all time.
With the win in Memphis, Scheffler takes home $3.6 million, bringing his total PGA Tour career earnings to $119.96 million. Woods stands just shy of $121 million, while McIlroy finished 66th in this weekend's tournament to bring his total to $116.49 million.
Scheffler finished -17 on the week, eight strokes ahead of second-place Si Woo Kim. He had entered into Sunday at -13, in first place by two strokes. There was a brief scare when he had an unfortunate bounce off a sewer grate and into the water for a bogey on the par-5 third hole. However, after that, he birdied the fifth and sixth and was never seriously threatened, as he continued to compound his lead.
It has been a wonky year for Scheffler, where he's the No. 1-ranked golfer but was still a disappointment by his lofty standards. His only previous win in 2026—including majors—was at The American Express in January. Nevertheless, including this week, he finished in the top five 12 times and as runner-up five times. He's ultimately won over $20 million on the PGA Tour this year.
Next week's BMW Championship in St. Louis—the second of three playoff events that kicked off this week with St. Jude—similarly awards $3.6 million to the winner, while the FedEx Championship to end the season has a $40 million purse—including $10 million for the winner. Scheffler would need to finish ninth or better next week to pass Woods in career earnings.

Alex Weir was known for his consistent runner-up results in Erie District Golf ******* ociation majors through this decade's first half.
Now, the Kahwka Club member appears set on atoning those close calls.
Weir, who was four strokes out of first place at the Aug. 16 start to the EDGA Amateur's final round, chased down leader Drew Deimel over the back nine at Lawrence Park Golf Club.
The duo required a playoff to determine this year's ******* list after they tied at 7-under par following 54 regulation holes.
It ended after 55 thanks to Weir, who successfully defended with a birdie three for the course's 364-yard first hole. His comeback victory vs. Deimel, the 2010 champion, occurred after the Amateur's third playoff since 2019.

A sea of humanity surrounded the tee box on No. 1, as Scottie Scheffler prepared to start his third round on Saturday. It roared on contact, widening the eyes of at least one veteran FedEx St. Jude Championship volunteer hole marshal.
The day began with Scheffler leading the field by three strokes thanks to his virtuosic, course record-tying, second-round 61 at TPC Southwind. By the time Scheffler headed back to the clubhouse Saturday, he was still perched atop the leaderboard, leading Sam Burns and Sungjae Im each by two strokes.
Is this the year? Will the string of pulse-pounding, adrenaline-fueled finishes that have become reliably commonplace at Memphis' annual golf tournament finally snap? Can Scheffler leave the few still within striking distance comfortably in the dust?
On behalf of everyone planning to brave the brutally hot conditions: Nooooooo!!
Thrilling, edge-of-your-golf-stool Sundays have made the FedEx St. Jude Championship (and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational before it) even more special than the elevated status already made them.

The first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs has reached its final round. We can only hope the action at the St. Jude Championship is at hot as the weather in Memphis.
With temperatures forecast to be back over 100, the golfers hoping to hang onto or snare a spot in the top 50 of the standings will have plenty to fight against. Sungjae Im can't afford to fall off after his impressive start; tied for second at 11 under through three rounds, the Korean has risen from 53rd to 35th. He and Sam Burns, who shot a blistering 8 under in Round 3, enter play today two strokes behind leader Scottie Scheffler.
The other name to watch on the bubble is Brian Harman, who comes in tied for sixth with Hideki Matsuyama, Si Woo Kim and Alex Noren six shots back. Harman has soared from No. 65 at the start of the tournament to No. 51, and if he can keep climbing, he could unseat Maverick McNealy for the final berth at next week's BMW Championship.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – There are no guarantees in golf and Scottie Scheffler's season, while insanely consistent, is a testament to how fickle the ancient game can be even for those at the very top of the competitive pyramid.
But even with the vagaries of golf, there was a competitive shudder when Scheffler maintained his two-shot lead at the FedEx St. Jude Championship with a third-round 68 that wasn't as explosive as the world No. 1's 61 on Friday but came with its own share of style points.
Scheffler's patience has been tested this season by his inability to win since The American Express, which he claimed in his first start of 2026 in January. The ball-striking has remained sublime but round after round has been slowed by poor putting. But that hasn't been the case at the playoff opener, where he is third in strokes gained: putting and he needed just 26 putts on Saturday.
Unlike Friday, when he birdied six of his first seven holes, Day 3 was more of a grind on the greens for Scheffler but he was able to maintain his lead and his momentum with timely par saves from 11 and 12 feet at Nos. 3 and 15, respectively.
"Any time you're holing those kind of 10- to 15-footers, it's really nice to keep the round going. I holed a few of those today. It was definitely important to keep the momentum in the round going," Scheffler said. "[No. 3 is a] reachable par-5, a hole where you think you're going to be able to give yourself a look for birdie at the worst. Kind of made a mess of the hole and was able to hole a nice putt there for par."

Devdutt Padikkal made a strong statement in India's first Test against Sri Lanka, dominating the opening day in Galle and strengthening his case for a permanent place at No. 3. Drafted into the playing XI after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out with an injury, Padikkal produced a magnificent unbeaten 131 on Day 1. He looked completely at ease against Sri Lanka's spinners and helped India finish the rain-curtailed opening day on 288/2 after 73 overs.
His performance has now earned high praise from former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar, who believes Padikkal's ability against spin makes him an ideal No. 3 option for India even after Sudharsan returns.
While Padikkal was compiling his century, Manjrekar took to X to highlight the batter's impressive technique against spin.
"Devdutt Padikkal god sent for India v spinners. Excellent technique, both in defence & attack."
Manjrekar later elaborated on Padikkal's strengths during a discussion on Sony Sports, pointing to his ability to combine defence, strike rotation and attacking strokes against spin.
"Devdutt Padikkal was the big change that India had, I really think selection is so good that when you see Padikkal walk in and play spin so comfortably, because he's good in defense against spin, he's good at picking 1s and 2s when the field is slightly deep, and then he's also good at playing attacking shots, and that too off the back foot on slow, turning pitches, " Manjrekar said.
Padikkal repeatedly used the depth of the crease to negate Sri Lanka's spinners while also stepping out whenever the bowlers offered him an opportunity. One of the standout moments came when he charged Prabath Jayasuriya and lofted the left-arm spinner over long-on for a six.
For Manjrekar, however, it was Padikkal's ability to score off the back foot on a slow, turning surface that particularly impressed him.
"That's something remarkable. On slow, turning pitches, to hit shots off the back foot with a straight bat and the pull shot tells you that it's somebody who wants to get onto the back foot, and the best way to play spin on a slow, turning pitch is to play the majority of the bowling off the back foot, " he added.
"Along with that, he's also got this knack of going down the pitch and hitting the ball over the sight screen. So on pitches where there is going to be an emphasis on spin, India should bat him at number 3 even if Sai Sudharsan comes back, because he looks such a formidable player against spin, I think it was godsent for India, Devdutt Padikkal at No. 3 with the kind of spin talent he has," Manjrekar said.
Padikkal was handed the No. 3 role following Sudharsan's injury and responded with a career-defining performance. His unbeaten 131 also made him the first Indian batter to score a Test century on Independence Day, while he became only the second Indian cricketer after Virat Kohli to score an international century on August 15.

NEW DELHI: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has wasted little time getting back to work after a productive tour of Zimbabwe, sharing a glimpse of his batting preparations ahead of the new domestic season and the Duleep Trophy.
The teenage India batter posted a video on his official Instagram account showing him working in the nets, focusing on both defence and attacking strokes. "Preparation," Sooryavanshi captioned the post.
The session comes at an important stage in the 15-year-old's rapidly developing career. Sooryavanshi has been named vice-captain of East Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, with experienced wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan set to lead the side.
Watch: Sooryavanshi gets ready for Duleep Trophy
Sooryavanshi's elevation to the leadership group has attracted considerable attention, given his age and meteoric rise over the past year.
However, East Zone selector Pravanjan Mullick said the appointment is intended to gradually prepare the teenager for greater responsibility rather than place the burden of captaincy on him immediately.
"He has not been made the captain. He has only been made the vice-captain. The captain is Ishan Kishan. Besides, Ishan is a wicketkeeper, so he will be actively involved throughout the day. It is not as though Vaibhav will be captaining the team all day. As he grows, he is maturing day by day. Giving him more responsibility will help him mature even further," Mullick told Cricbuzz after the squad announcement.
The selectors have also pointed to Sooryavanshi's previous experience in leadership roles. He has served as Bihar's vice-captain in first-class cricket and was part of India's leadership group during their Under-19 World Cup campaign.
"This is a great opportunity for him to take on the responsibility of being vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy. He wants to do well for the country, and we believe giving young players responsibility is important. Who knows? We are keeping our fingers crossed that one day he could even become India's captain. That is the thought behind giving him the vice-captaincy," Mullick had said.
Sooryavanshi's preparations come after an impressive tour of Zimbabwe, where he finished as India's leading run-scorer with 151 runs in three innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10.
He scored two fifties, including an unbeaten 81, and was named Player of the Series as India secured their first T20I series victory under captain Shreyas Iyer.
That was a significant response after a difficult start to his international career. Sooryavanshi made his India debut during the England tour but failed to cross the 20-run mark in his three innings.
He now has six T20I appearances and 193 runs at an average of 32.16 and a remarkable strike rate of 189.21, including two fifties.
His next challenge will be markedly different. The Duleep Trophy will provide Sooryavanshi with an opportunity to test his batting in the longer format, with national selectors s

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has welcomed Sarfaraz Khan's return to India's Test squad and backed him to make the playing XI against Sri Lanka, arguing that his ability against spin could make him a better option than Dhruv Jurel in the conditions expected in Galle.
Sarfaraz was added to India's squad as a replacement for injured Sai Sudharsan and joined the team in Sri Lanka on Monday. His return has also reignited the debate over his prolonged absence from the Test setup, having last played for India against New Zealand in November 2024.
Kaif, while discussing Sarfaraz's comeback on his YouTube channel, questioned why the batter was left out after his initial run in the side. He stressed that poor performance was not the reason for Sarfaraz's exclusion.
"There was a reason he was not allowed to play. Performance was not the reason. There was no reason. That his runs were not getting made, that the bat was not working. He made runs against New Zealand. He came across the field. He was playing well. He was in form. When he scored against England, he had a good start," Kaif said.
Kaif also praised the decision-makers for bringing Sarfaraz back, believing his skill against spin could prove valuable in Sri Lanka.
"Whatever happened in between, he was removed. But now, whoever said that he should come back, I feel that he is thinking for India. India is thinking for cricket. We have to win. We will need good players. We will need good players. We will need good players who play well," Kaif further said.
He added: "So, first of all, whoever has named him on the table, I congratulate him a lot. And I hope that Sarfaraz Khan will go there and play well."
The bigger question now is whether Sarfaraz can go straight into India's XI. Kaif believes he should, although he acknowledged that the team management could favour Jurel because of his existing involvement with the squad.
"If they follow the trend of backing the players who have already been playing for the team, then they might say, 'Jurel has been with us already. He hasn't scored consistently, but we will back him because he has already been part of the team.' If that is the approach, then Sarfaraz will have to wait," Kaif said.
"But if you ask me what the best XI is, Sarfaraz's name comes into my best XI because of his ability to play spin at No. 5 or No. 6. His record against spin is excellent," he added.
Sarfaraz's range of strokes is another reason Kaif sees him as a strong option, particularly if the pitch becomes increasingly difficult to bat on as the Test progresses.
"He also has a wide range of shots. When you get to the fourth or fifth day, batting becomes more difficult, and that is where a player like Sarfaraz Khan can be very useful," he said. "He knows how to use sweeps and reverse sweeps effectively. He can hit over extra cover, he is good off the back foot and he attacks spin."

Aug. 9—Bradley Mulder, a key contributor on Mead High's 2023 state championship and Colorado Christian University's Division II national ******* le the ensuing year as a freshman, is no stranger to high-pressure holes or putts in golf tournaments.
Mulder was going in reverse in the final round of the Washington Amateur in late June as a three-stroke lead evaporated after an errant drive on No. 7 sailed out of bounds and a bogey on No. 9 at the Home Course in DuPont, near Olympia.
At stake? The winner earns an exemption into the U.S. Amateur, which Mulder refers to as the "best amateur tournament in the world."
No longer atop the leaderboard after a 3-over 39 on the front side — his worst score in the 54-hole event by five strokes — Mulder somehow shifted from reverse to overdrive, not easy to do given the mounting pressure and his usually reliable swing taking a timeout.
"I was kind of frustrated," Mulder said. "I had a mental shift. Instead of the mindset, 'Hey, I'm losing this,' I thought, 'I'm only one shot back and I have an opportunity to win.' "

Michael Block was disqualified Sunday from a Staysure Legends Tour event in Aberdeen, Scotland, after he walked off the course 12 holes into his final round of the PGA Seniors Championship.
According to the tour, which is the DP World Tour's equivalent to the PGA Tour Champions, the 50-year-old Block "left the course before completing his round and without completing the necessary process of advising Tour officials of any injury or illness."
Block, who was competing on a sponsor exemption, was also penalized two strokes for arriving late to his final-round tee time, the tour confirmed.
Monday Q Info's Ryan French first reported that Block, who went out in 7-over 43 at Trump International Golf Links, bogeyed the 12th hole and then "walked off the course." French added, citing multiple unnamed sources, that Block "didn't say anything to his playing partners" and that Block "was frustrated with the course conditions."
Block, though refuted some specifics of that report, explaining to Golf Digest's Evin Priest through text messages that he withdrew because of a left-wrist injury and did communicate his reasoning with his playing competitors, Paul Streeter and James Kingston.

Michael Brennan fired a six-under par 64 to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, taking his second PGA Tour **** le in the final regular-season event before the FedEx Cup playoffs.
The 24-year-old American closed with a 13-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole to finish on 22-under 258 and defeat compatriot Beau Hossler by three strokes.
Brennan, whose other PGA **** le came last October at the Bank of Utah Championship on a sponsor's exemption, took home $1.53 million from the $8.5 million purse on offer at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Brennan reeled off five birdies in a row Sunday to seize command, a run that began with an eight-foot birdie putt at the fourth hole and included a birdie at the par-three seventh where he missed an ace by six inches.
He made bogey at 11 after a tee shot into the right rough but sank a testy five-foot par putt at the par-three 12th and answered with an eight-foot birdie putt at 13.

After failing to advance to the FedExCup Playoffs, Brooks Koepka did not mince words.
"I think it's pretty pathetic that I can't get through," Koepka said after carding an even-par 70 Sunday morning at Sedgefield Country Club to wrap up a 74-70 weekend at the Wyndham Championship.
Koepka shared 70th place when he finished his round, well shy of the minimum solo-fourth performance he needed to move inside the top 70 and qualify for next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship.
"Ball-struck it great," Koepka said. "It's just all on the greens. I don't know what the deal is, got zero confidence, can't putt. I don't know. There's going to be a lot of changes here soon."
Entering the Wyndham ranking 116th in strokes gained putting, Koepka was 68th out of 81 players who made the cut this week.

Trevor Immelman has suggested that he was so impressed by Michael Thorbjornsen hitting all but one of the greens in regulation during the final round of the Rocket Classic on his way to securing his first PGA Tour victory.
Thorbjornsen almost seemed to sneak up on those leading the way for the majority of the week at Detroit Golf Club.
The 24-year-old went into the final round in Michigan in a tie for seventh. And there was little indication of the fireworks to come when he reached the turn on Sunday at two under par for the day.
However, Thorbjornsen made five birdies on the back nine to win by two over Xander Schauffele.
The youngster was second in the field for strokes gained approach on Sunday, as he gained more than 3.4 shots.

Boston Scientific posted second-quarter net sales of $5.44 billion and adjusted earnings of $0.86 per share on Wednesday, beating its own guidance, but the company trimmed its full-year profit outlook as demand for its Watchman heart implant fell short of expectations.
The company now expects full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share of $3.28 to $3.32, the company said. That compares to a prior forecast of $3.34 to $3.41 per share. ***** ysts had expected full-year adjusted profit of $3.36 per share, according to Reuters.
Boston Scientific also cut its full-year organic sales growth outlook to a range of 5% to 6%, down from a prior range of 6.5% to 8%, the company said.
The Watchman is a device implanted in the heart to block blood clots that can cause strokes in patients who have atrial fibrillation. The drag on that business stems from changing clinical practice — doctors are more often pairing the Watchman with other heart procedures in one visit, which has eaten into the volume of dedicated Watchman-only cases, according to Reuters. Boston Scientific indicated that Watchman revenue is on track to be roughly unchanged in the second quarter and probably the third as well, even as combined-procedure volumes keep climbing.
The quarterly results themselves topped expectations. Second-quarter adjusted EPS of $0.86 came in above the company's guidance range of $0.82 to $0.84. Revenue of $5.44 billion exceeded the high end of the company's guided range of 5.5% to 7.5% reported growth. ***** ysts had expected quarterly revenue of $5.36 billion and adjusted profit of $0.83 per share.

It's fitting that two of the brightest starts at the final Rocket Classic have been two of the most dedicated golfers in the tournament's eight-year history.
Indiana native Peter Malnati led the field after the first round of the 2026 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club, shooting a 9-under par on Thursday, July 30. Malnati's 61 overall tied a course record set by Jake Knapp in the 2025 Rocket Classic as Malnati had multiple opportunities not only to grab the course record for himself, but register a historic round of 59.
"Even in the beginning before I knew it was going to be a special day, I didn't feel the same level of like anxiety of, like, if I hit a bad shot, it means I suck," he said. "I just felt no, I'm going to enjoy the good ones. If I hit a bad one, I'm going to figure out why and how can I improve."
Not far behind him was fan favorite Rickie Fowler, who finished the first round tied for second at 7-under, two strokes back. Malnati and Fowler are two of the six golfers to have played in all eight editions of the Rocket Classic.
World No. 3 Cameron Young, the highest-ranked player at the tournament, finished at 1-under after the first round while World No. 5 Russell Henley finished at 3-under.

Charlie Woods got off to a slow start at the Junior PGA Championship on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods shot 3-over 75 at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas in the opening round, seven strokes off the lead and tied for 53rd.
Woods bogeyed the first and fourth holes before making his first birdie of the day at the seventh hole. He made a double bogey at the ninth to tour the front nine in 39. On the back nine, Woods traded birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 with bogeys at Nos. 14 and 16.
Woods finished T-9 at the Junior PGA last year at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, one of the few tournaments his famous father never won. Tiger finished runner-up in 1990.
Conditions were difficult on Tuesday, including 100-degree heat, at the course that will play host to the PGA Championship next May. Only 16 players in the field of 156 managed to break par on a difficult day in which 29 players shot 80 or higher. No one played better than Kailer Stone of Alameda, Calif., who birdied three of the final four holes to shoot 4-under 68 and claim the lead.

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas has thrown his weight behind Indian batting icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, insisting that both veterans still have plenty left in the tank and should be part of India's squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The legendary Pakistan batter, popularly known as the 'Asian Bradman', dismissed concerns surrounding the duo's age and said their skill, experience and continued ability to score runs make them automatic contenders for the marquee tournament, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
"Both are very, very good in terms of skill and, given their experience, I don't see any reason why they should not play the World Cup. Age should not be a factor as long as they are fit and continue scoring runs," news agency PTI quoted Zaheer as saying on a Pakistani television channel.
Zaheer, regarded as one of Pakistan's finest batters after scoring more than 100 first-class centuries during his illustrious career, believes Kohli and Rohit possess qualities that only grow stronger with time.
According to the former Pakistan skipper, scoring runs becomes second nature for players of their calibre after spending years at the highest level, while their experience remains invaluable in major ICC tournaments.
He also ******* sed the fitness of the two Indian greats, saying Kohli continues to maintain exceptional physical standards.
"Kohli is still supremely fit, while Rohit just needs to pay a little more attention to his fitness," Zaheer observed.
The Pakistan great added that India would benefit immensely from having both veterans in the dressing room during the 2027 World Cup campaign.
His remarks come at a time when speculation over the future of India's senior stars continues despite both producing match-winning performances in the ODI format.
Zaheer reserved special praise for Rohit after watching the former Indian captain's recent century against England, saying the opener's batting remains a delight to watch.
"I watched Rohit score a hundred against England, and it is still a pleasure to watch him bat. He plays so effortlessly and with such sweet timing," he said.
Rohit's knock against England once again underlined his credentials in the 50-over format, while Kohli has also continued to deliver consistently, strengthening the argument that the experienced pair could still play a crucial role at the next World Cup.
Reflecting on the changing nature of modern cricket, Zaheer acknowledged that T20 cricket has introduced several innovative strokes into the game. However, he insisted that the fundamentals remain just as important, saying every batter aspiring to succeed across formats must master traditional shots like the cover drive and the cut shot.
The former Pakistan captain also spoke about his country's cricketing future, expressing confidence that better days lie ahead.
"Hopefully, the return of Babar Azam as Test captain will turn thing
