Social Security benefits are a critical income source for most older Americans. In fact, 67% of older adults (1) aged 65 get over half their income from their benefits. That's why it's so important not to do anything that could inadvertently reduce the amount you collect.
Unfortunately, when planning your retirement, you may make a move that costs you some of this money without even knowing it. Specifically, choosing to spend your retirement in one of the following eight U.S. states means that you risk losing a percentage of your benefits every year.

The 2026 midterm elections was a decisive victory for Democrats, who won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. With Republicans retaining the White House, the election results bring a period of divided government starting in January.
Wall Street's initial reaction has been enthusiastic. As of this writing (Nov. 4), the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) surged more than 1,500 points during morning trading, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) also rallied.

Beneath the broader market's gains, investors are undoubtedly repositioning their portfolios. Artificial intelligence (AI) hyperscalers like Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms are surging, while many semiconductor stocks and data center operators are plunging.

Social media influencers have made owning a laundromat look like an easy way to make money, with videos showing buckets of quarters and stacks of cash rolling in. But some aspiring entrepreneurs who bought into the hype are finding out the hard way that these businesses are costly to maintain, and the income is anything but passive.
In a new report, The Wall Street Journal examined the growing popularity of laundromat ownership on social media, where videos of owners collecting cash have attracted millions of views. What gets far less attention are the expenses and day-to-day headaches that come with running one.

Schwab, Fidelity, and Vanguard each have different default beneficiary clauses, so a blank IRA form can send your account to your kids or your estate.
An estate inheriting an IRA triggers a 5-year withdrawal rule instead of 10, costing heirs an extra $2,430 in federal tax per child before state taxes.
Naming primary and contingent beneficiaries on every account, including Roth IRAs, and re-filing after any rollover or divorce takes about ten minutes.

Florida voters on Tuesday approved a major overhaul of the state's property tax system. But the droves of billionaires and other ultrawealthy people who recently moved there are unlikely to notice much of a difference from its headline tax break.
Amendment 3—which raises the homestead exemption on non-school property taxes from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and to $250,000 in 2028—passed with 62% of the vote, according to the ***** ociated Press. Supporters pitched Amendment 3 as relief for everyday homeowners, and for many, it is. But because the exemption is a flat dollar amount, it does far less for the billionaires who turned South Florida into one of the country's wealthiest enclaves.
Take Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, who moved his firm from Chicago to Miami, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also moved to Miami in 2023 and has since bought a $237 million compound on Indian Creek, the island nicknamed "Billionaire Bunker." Bezos is also reportedly buying a $69.5 million oceanfront estate in nearby Golden Beach.
Experts told Fortune, though, the bigger factor of Amendment 3 for people like Griffin and Bezos is a less-noticed part: a tighter limit on how fast taxes can rise on second homes, rentals, and other properties that aren't a primary residence. Florida caps how much those properties' taxable values can increase each year, and Amendment 3 cuts that cap from 10% to 5%. In a hot market like South Florida's, that slows tax growth on homes whose values are climbing quickly, and many wealthy buyers own more than one.
But for a billionaire who claims a Florida homestead, the savings from Amendment 3 aren't that noticeable. Raul Gastesi, a real estate attorney and cofounder of Miami law firm Gastesi Lopez Mestre & Cobiella, calculated that at the statewide average non-school tax rate, the expanded exemption will save a homestead owner about $2,085 a year once fully in place. A home ***** sed at $350,000 would see its local services property tax bill fall from about $3,135 to about $1,050. A $50 million homestead would go from about $524,000 to about $522,000.

Between October 6 and November 4, 2026, NVIDIA (NVDA) stock fell 16.3% while the S&P 500 lost 1.6%. Anyone thinking of buying wants to know whether that drop is a chance or a warning. The answer depends less on demand, which management says is larger than NVIDIA can supply, than on what meeting that demand will cost the company. First, how strong is NVIDIA's business right now?
NVIDIA's Sales Growth Has Sped Up Four Quarters Running
The latest results show a very strong business. Revenue rose 105.9% from a year earlier to $96.2 billion in fiscal Q2 2027, the quarter that ended July 26, 2026. Growth had been 62.5% in fiscal Q3 2026, and it accelerated in each quarter after that. That 62.5% was itself up from 55.6% in fiscal Q2 2026. NVIDIA also keeps an unusual share of its sales as profit. Its operating margin over the last twelve months was 65.2%, against 18.7% for the S&P 500.
Investors pay 25.1 times NVIDIA's earnings over the last twelve months, against 22.8 for the S&P 500. A multiple only a little above the broader market reflects profits that more than doubled in a year. Net income over the last twelve months was $193 billion, against $86.6 billion a year earlier. If profits fell back, the same share price would mean a higher multiple.

People who pursue a FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) philosophy aggressively save and invest with a goal of retiring young enough to enjoy the freedom that a substantial nest egg affords. A fatFIRE adherent aims to accumulate a seven- or eight-figure retirement portfolio, enabling a lifestyle that ordinary early retirement budgets cannot support. When a couple's in-laws share those fatFIRE values, the relationship tends to run smoothly. But good intentions packaged as sizable financial gifts can shift that balance quickly, and without diplomacy and a shared strategy, even a generous offer can quietly fracture family dynamics.

Princess Diana remains one of the most influential royal style figures decades after her death. From glamorous evening gowns to casual sweatshirts, her clothes attracted enormous attention and often carried meanings that went far beyond fashion. Few pieces illustrate that fascination better than her famous red Black Sheep sweater, featuring rows of white sheep and a single black one standing apart from the flock.
Diana first wore the Warm & Wonderful sweater in 1981, shortly after her engagement to Prince Charles. The playful design quickly attracted attention, particularly because the lone black sheep invited interpretations about Diana's own position within royal life. Those interpretations remain speculative, but there is clear evidence that she valued the garment. After the original sweater was damaged, Buckingham Palace contacted the designers seeking a repair or replacement. Diana later appeared publicly in the replacement.
Years later, the original sweater was rediscovered and offered at auction through Sotheby's in 2023. Before the sale, it carried an estimate of $50,000 to $80,000. Its significance came from more than Diana simply having worn it. The accompanying correspondence helped establish its history, while photographs of Diana wearing the distinctive design made it instantly recognizable to collectors and royal fashion enthusiasts.
The final result dramatically exceeded expectations. The sweater sold for $1.143 million, including fees, setting a record at the time for an item of clothing worn by Diana at auction. The price also demonstrated how dramatically demand for objects connected with the princess had grown. Other pieces from her wardrobe had already achieved impressive results, including a purple Victor Edelstein evening gown that sold for more than $600,000 earlier in 2023.
Diana's wardrobe continues to attract this level of interest because her clothing became closely connected with her public identity. Early in her royal life, she embraced romantic dresses and traditional silhouettes. Over time, her wardrobe became increasingly confident, incorporating streamlined tailoring, memorable eveningwear and relaxed casual pieces.

Past the zero-tax line, the Social Security tax torpedo makes each extra IRA dollar count nearly twice, producing an effective marginal rate of about 19%.

The dress featured a delicate ivory base decorated with oversized floral prints in muted pink, purple, and green tones. However, the romantic pattern wasn't the only detail that caught attention.
The dress featured a semi-transparent fabric that revealed the silhouette underneath, giving the otherwise feminine design a daring edge. The fitted silhouette hugged her figure before falling into a flowing midi-length skirt. The dress also had delicate spaghetti straps and an asymmetrical neckline, with a soft fabric detail draped over one shoulder.

Meghan Markle reportedly despises the feeling of "begging for acceptance" from the royal family. The report comes amid the speculation surrounding the ***** ss of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry's relationship with the senior members of the institution, following their return to Britain. Now, according to a new report, a source claimed that Markle has been perceiving that Kate Middleton and Prince William have control over the public conversation. And, it has reportedly been getting quite frustrating for her.
The alleged feeling of inferiority with respect to the royal family has reportedly not been sitting well with Meghan Markle. As reported by Heatworld, a source revealed that Kate Middleton has been "hoping the brothers can somehow work it out. She'll always have a soft spot for Harry and would love him back in the fold." This comes despite the Waleses' dignified silence regarding the Sussexes since their return to the UK.
However, according to the source, the Princess of Wales is aware that she has to handle the situation "tactfully" with her husband, Prince William. Per the source, however, she refuses to give up the hope that the two allegedly estranged brothers can reconcile one day.
Per the news outlet, the insider further claimed that Markle "can't stand the feeling that the royal family has the upper hand – and hates the idea of being portrayed as desperately trying to claw their way back in, only to be repeatedly rejected." According to the insider, "It's like they're begging for acceptance from people who have no intention of giving it."
Furthermore, the source also explained to the publication what Markle has been feeling about the entire situation and what she might do. According to the source, "There's a defiant side to Meghan." The ***** ss of Sussex will "do what she wants and won't allow the royals to determine or stop her happiness or success," the source added.

Archival couture rarely looks this playful, and Sienna Miller's minidress proved it by turning heads in Los Angeles with glossy pink satin and a shape that refused to stay simple. The hemline carried plenty of drama, while the back held an even bigger surprise. Pale tones, soft ruffles and a vintage pedigree set the mood for the "Madden" premiere.
Sienna Miller, 44, wore Emanuel Ungaro to the Los Angeles event. According to Check The Tag, the piece comes from the label's Spring/Summer 1992 Couture collection.
The strapless dress skimmed her frame in blush-pink satin. A straight, structured neckline sat above a gathered waist, which gave the fabric a softly ruched finish. Below, a tiered ruffle trimmed the hem and also added movement with every step.
The back of the dress added a touch of fun. A large, bow-like swirl of satin sat at the hip, which turned the short silhouette into something more sculptural. On Miller, the minidress looked playful yet polished, with the volume at the back and the ruffle at the front echoing one another.
The "American Sniper" actress kept her accessories minimal. Pale pink sandals with slim ankle straps kept the palette tonal, while a statement ring added a hint of sparkle. Her blonde hair was pulled into a high, loose ponytail, with a few strands left out to frame her face. Soft, rosy makeup and a pink lip completed the look.

A strong showing by Democrats in Texas swept Gina Hinojosa into office as the state's first Democratic governor since 1990 in a contest closely watched by Big Tech companies.
Texas is considered a bellwether for government restrictions on AI data centers and was just one place where deep voter unease over the build-out was on display. Voters across the country passed a series of local ballot measures aimed at restricting construction in the years ahead.
Hinojosa, Texas's first Latina governor, has pledged to impose a moratorium on data center construction in Texas, which accounts for more than 25% of planned US capacity by 2030.
"I want to say something to the powerful people who have gotten very comfortable running this state," she told supporters in her victory speech. "The voters have delivered a mandate for change, and it is change they will get."
Her victory was one of a series of wins for Democrats in Texas. The party is also on track to take control of the Texas House, which would give Hinojosa more power to follow through on restrictions even as the state Senate appears set to remain under Republican control.

Archaeologists have finally cracked the code to the famed Ann Francis shipwreck’s brass combination treasure lock. However, the 16th century relic didn’t open after hours of painstaking trial-and-error. Researchers at Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru, the National Museum of Wales, relied on highly detailed CT scanning equipment to peer inside the mechanical device and learn the code without touching the lock itself.
“It’s not every day you get to solve a 400-year-old mystery,” David Williams, a Cardiff University biomechanics engineer, said in a statement.
The lock’s combination was lost on December 28, 1583, when the merchant ship Ann Francis sailed into a powerful storm during a return voyage from Spain. The exact crew number is unclear, but all of them (around 14 sailors) reportedly drowned after veering off-course and wrecking along the coast of southern Wales. Unfortunately, at least one other death is likely directly tied to the Ann Francis. Archival evidence suggests locals later accused a “detestable woman” named Mother Gabley of being an “execrable witch” and casting the foul weather responsible for the maritime tragedy. While Mother Gabley’s fate remains unknown, she would have almost certainly been hanged under the recently passed “Act Against Conjurations, Enchantments and Witchcrafts” if brought to trial.
The Ann Francis remained missing for 415 years, until metal detectorist Peter Hughes rediscovered the wreckage while surveying southern Wales’ Margam Beach in 1998. Hughes and archaeologists subsequently spent more than 20 years scouring the area for the ship’s remains. By 2017, preservationists had documented over 800 gold and silver coins from Germany, Spain, and Portugal along with artifacts like compasses, ship equipment, and cutlery.
Still, the wreck’s most famous remnant is the brass combination lock still in working condition after four centuries buried in sand. It’s possible the lock was used to guard those coins, or potentially other valuables that didn’t survive exposure to the elements. Regardless, the lock has remained close with no hints to its four-letter combination for hundreds of years.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) stock market index has more than doubled from its 2022 bear market low point, but it faces a number of challenges that could derail its current bull run.
Rising oil prices are stoking inflation, which prompted the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its September meeting, and additional hikes might be on the way. To top things off, the S&P is trading at a very expensive valuation, leaving it particularly vulnerable to a sharp sell-off. Fortunately, there is a way investors can capitalize on a downturn based on almost 70 years' worth of history.
The U.S. and Iran have been engaged in a geopolitical conflict since February, resulting in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz waterway, through which 25% of the world's seaborne oil transits each day. The maximum 2026 Social Security benefit is $5,181/month, requiring 35+ years earning at or above the $184,500 wage cap and claiming at 70.
Most workers can't hit the wage cap, but delaying Social Security to 70 and boosting salary through job-hopping raises your benefit meaningfully.
Combining a $2,500 monthly Social Security benefit with $32,000 in annual IRA or 401(k) withdrawals can match the maximum benefit's $62,000 yearly income.

Roth conversions count as income, so retirees over 65 near $75,000 can lose the new $6,000 senior deduction without warning.
A $40,000 conversion for a single retiree costs about 23% rather than the quoted 22%, while $100,000 nearly erases the deduction.
Converting only up to the income threshold, waiting until 2029, or paying conversion tax from taxable savings can protect the deduction.

Congress handed people 65 and older a new tax break last year, and it comes with a tripwire that most of the articles celebrating it skipped. The deduction is worth up to $6,000 a person for tax years 2025 through 2028. It starts to shrink once your income passes $75,000 if you are single, or $150,000 if you file jointly, and it shrinks fast: 6 cents for every dollar over the line. At $175,000 single or $250,000 joint it is gone.

The actress is reportedly hurt that there has been no acknowledgement of them from the royal family. It is quite "hurtful" because one positive word would silence their critics. On top of that, the bills are piling up for them, and the expenses are only increasing.

Herbert Blomstedt, who headed the San Francisco Symphony from 1985-95 and led orchestras in Scandinavia and Germany during a career over seven decades, died Wednesday. He was 99.
Blomstedt died at his home in Gothenburg, Sweden, according to his management agency, KünstlerSekretariat am Gasteig.
His final performance was on May 15 with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall, when he entered the stage in a wheelchair and struggled to get through Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, which halted for several minutes during the third movement.

Just two miles short of the finish line of the 2026 New York City Marathon on Nov. 1, 24-year-old runner Rachel Apa collapsed. She died of a rare and potentially life-threatening illness that can be brought on by excessive exertion, the New York Times reported.
It's called rhabdomyolysis, and while there are relatively few cases nationwide each year, it can strike during endurance or intensive exercise, including marathons.
Apa was running her first marathon to raise money for Parkinson's disease in honor of her late grandfather, according to the New York Times. But Apa was no stranger to athletics, having played Division I field hockey in college. Her family said Apa had been in "perfect health." Plus, she'd been training for the race for months.
But at mile 18, Apa texted her father, Steve, who'd been checking in at each mile: "Ow." At the end of the next mile, she wrote, "Ow ow." She stopped responding after that. Apa's mother, Michelle, was at the race and had watched her daughter run by earlier on. Her parents noticed on the marathon tracking app that Apa stopped moving after mile 24.
Apa collapsed just after running past hospital social worker Michaela Nichols, who was cheering on participants. Nichols ran over and checked Apa's pulse, but couldn't find one. Three other people — two of whom said they were physicians — ran over to give Apa CPR. Marathon medical staff tried to revive her with a defibrillator before an ambulance arrived. She was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center and treated for six hours, but could not be saved.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have had a successful visit to Antigua and Barbuda, following on from His Majesty's solo visits to the Bahamas and Guyana. On Thursday they will be touching down on UK soil, just in time for Bonfire Night. However, it may not be a big celebration in the royal household, and that's because of this one reason…
The royal couple have two dogs, Bluebell, a rescue Jack Russell Terrier adopted by Camilla from the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in 2012 and Moley, a part Jack Russell Terrier adopted from the same place in 2025.

It is well known that dogs can struggle with the loud bangs that come with fireworks, and are often unsettled during this time of year. Plus, the Jack Russell breed in particular, being a non-hunting breed, is said to not cope well with the sounds. So, Charles and Camilla may be spending their post-travel evening comforting their pooches if they aren't happy.
Advice on the Battersea Dogs Home website includes playing classical music to soothe and calm your pet, giving them a long-lasting chew to keep them distracted and also drawing the curtains to block out the light from fireworks.
