Retail sales in Canada rose 0.6% to C$74.3bn ($53.67bn) in June 2026, with seven of nine sub-sectors recording higher sales, according to Statistics Canada.
Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline stations and fuel vendors, as well as motor vehicle and parts dealers, increased 1.2% during the month, marking their second consecutive monthly rise.
Seasonally adjusted retail e-commerce sales climbed 9.9% to C$5.7bn in June.
Online sales accounted for 7.7% of total retail trade, compared with 7.1% in May.
General merchandise retailers posted a 2.7% increase while sales at clothing, clothing accessories, jewellery, leather goods, luggage and shoe retailers climbed 3.1%.

Bayern Munich believe there is "no way around" giving Harry Kane the Ballon d'Or after the England star scored 61 goals in 51 appearances and helped the German giants win the German double during the 2025/26 season.
Kane also played a key role in Bayern's Champions League run, which ended with a narrow semi-final defeat to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, before helping England finish third at the World Cup with six goals at the tournament.
For FC Bayern CCO Rouven Kasper, Kane is in a league of his own when it comes to this year's race for the world's best player award.
"It can only be Harry Kane. We can just give it to Harry," Kasper insisted in an interview with Sky Sports.

I thought it was a promising game from Levi Onwuzurike, Tyler Lacy, and although his chances were limited to the very end of the game, Eric O'Neill looked disruptive again. And starter DJ Wonnum kicked things off with a solid performance, including a sack.

The 2-1 scoreline might suggest a closely fought Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, but Bayern Munich's performance told a different story.
Vincent Kompany's side controlled the match for long stretches and dictated the tempo, particularly during a dominant first half that saw Bayern Munich take a 2-0 lead. Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise provided the goals, with Olise also setting up Brown for the opener.
Bayern Munich's control was reflected in the numbers, with the reigning Bundesliga champions enjoying the majority of possession and producing considerably more accurate passing than Borussia Dortmund. Their ability to consistently keep the ball, move Borussia Dortmund around and establish territory in the final third was a major reason they were able to build their advantage.
BVB improved after halftime and Fabio Silva pulled one back in the 75th minute, but Bayern Munich remained composed under pressure.

Savinho is blessed with tremendous ability to beat a man and is quick, but has that one obvious, and perhaps fatal, flaw in his game. Ever since last summer, Savinho has always seemed likely to attempt to take that next step away from Manchester City. That is exactly what will transpire as Savinho will finally get his desired move to Tottenham.
All summer it has been well known that Savinho has wanted to leave Manchester City to sign for Tottenham. He has now got his wish. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Tottenham have finally reached a verbal agreement with City to sign Savinho. Romano reports that Tottenham will pay over £75 million to sign the Brazilian international who will travel to London to complete his medical with Spurs imminently.
Ciaran Wiseman reports for TalkSport that Tottenham will pay £85 million to sign Savinho. That will be a club record sale for Manchester City which represents great business for the club.
Savinho may well kick on at Tottenham and become the player he always promised to be under Roberto De Zerbi. As mentioned countless times before and above, Savinho has the tools to become an elite winger. However, at Manchester City, it never seemed like that would happen for him. Too often, Savinho flattered to deceive for City and a summer transfer is the best move for all concerned. That has finally occurred and Savinho's move to Tottenham does represent great business for Manchester City.
Securing a club record sale for a winger who hasn't quite broken through at City is fantastic. Manchester City can now reinvest that money in the areas of their squad that need improving. They've sold a player that didn't want to be at the club and an end to a saga that has run over two summer has finally arrived.

Andy Burnham has blamed Donald Trump's war in Iran for higher inflation in Britain.
Inflation jumped from 2.6pc in June to 2.9pc last month, according to the Office for National Statistics, threatening to undermine Mr Burnham's pledge to bring down the cost of living.
The Prime Minister said: "We can't control though what is going on in the Middle East and the effect of the conflict there is now being felt in inflation here, and in other countries around the world.
"I realise these times are really hard but already people can see a month into office I have done things that will make a difference."
July's inflation figure was affected by a 13.5pc rise in the Ofgem price cap in response to the energy crisis unleashed by the Iran war. It means prices are now rising at their highest rate since March.

AB de Villiers believes Virat Kohli took India's batting success in overseas Test cricket to another level, while crediting Sachin Tendulkar for first showing that Indian batters could thrive in conditions traditionally considered difficult for players from the subcontinent.

The former South Africa batter and Kohli's ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate was speaking after India's 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday.

De Villiers acknowledged Tendulkar's pioneering role but argued that Kohli went a step further in establishing himself as an outstanding overseas Test batter.

"I think of someone like Sachin Tendulkar way back, who started that trend for India. Yet, he wasn't as strong as someone like Virat Kohli, who was even better. But Sachin was the first guy to show that as a subcontinent batter, you can do well in bouncy and seaming conditions. Virat took that forward and raised the bar," said de Villiers on his YouTube channel.

Tendulkar remains the highest run-scorer in Test cricket, having accumulated 15,921 runs in 200 matches before retiring in 2013. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket in May 2025, ended his career with 9,230 runs in 123 Tests, placing him 19th on the all-time list.

The statistics, however, suggest Tendulkar still holds the edge when it comes to performances away from home. Of his 15,921 Test runs, 8,705 came outside India, accounting for around 55% of his total. He is also the leading run-scorer among batters in overseas Test cricket.

Kohli scored 4,774 runs in 66 Tests outside India.

The comparison remains in Tendulkar's favour even when the focus is restricted to SENA countries: South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia. Tendulkar amassed 5,387 runs in 63 Tests in those countries at an average of 51.30, including 17 centuries and 23 fifties.

Kohli, meanwhile, scored 3,661 runs in 46 Tests in SENA conditions at an average of 42.08, with 12 centuries and 14 fifties.

De Villiers' ******* sment therefore appears to focus less on the raw numbers and more on Kohli's wider influence on Indian Test cricket. During Kohli's tenure, India established itself as a formidable side overseas, setting higher expectations for performances outside home conditions.

According to de Villiers, that influence has carried into the current generation, with batters such as KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal following the path laid by Tendulkar and Kohli.

"Because of that, there are quite a few players now like [KL] Rahul and [Devdutt] Padikkal, who have started to up that trend and follow in the footsteps of a Virat and a Sachin," he added.

De Villiers did, however, identify overseas batting as an area where Rahul needs to improve. Despite praising the Karnataka batter's technique and importance to the Indian side, he pointed out that Rahul averages only 34 away from home.

Fifty-four percent of U.S. households saved no money last month, EY-Parthenon found in a survey, highlighting how the rising price for gasoline and other goods is undermining consumers' buying power.
One out of five households spent more than it earned and tapped debt or savings to cover expenses, EY-Parthenon said. Seventy-two percent of consumers identified dining out, apparel, beauty and personal care, and other discretionary categories as candidates for spending cuts.
"Many households are maintaining stability through spending trade-offs, delayed purchases and the use of savings or debt," Mark Chambers, the retail sector leader for EY Americas, said in a statement, while noting consumers' "resilience."
Consumers are altering their outlays to cope with persistent price pressures. Inflation rose 3.4% on an annual basis last month after increasing 3.5% in June, even as energy prices during July fell 1.5%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday.

The Patriots used 29 players on the offensive side of the ball in their preseason opener against the Colts last Thursday, and not one of them was on the field for fewer snaps than Van Vooren. The second-year tight end played just three snaps on the night without registering any statistics; he also played a pair of snaps on special teams as well.
His lack of quality opportunities in that game and pretty much ever since he arrived in New England ahead of training camp made it pretty clear that the 25-year-old was facing a major uphill battle not just for the 53-man roster but the practice squad as well. Him being let go now in response to the Van Roten signing is therefore no real surprise.
With Van Vooren out of the picture, the Patriots' active tight end group now stands at just five players deep.

Saturday night left very little room for criticism as the Baltimore Ravens sent the hometown fans home happy. They opened the preseason with a 24-7 one-sided victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
In true midseason form, Jesse Minter wasn't interested in celebrating the result for long. By Monday, the Ravens' first-year head coach had already shifted his attention toward the lessons learned from the performance and how to help his team improve.
That's the reality of August football. The result matters far less than the lessons a team can carry into September, and Minter's attention was already fixed on those details.
The Ravens have another busy week. Monday morning's practice was followed by Jesse Minter's chat with the media. Tuesday brings a walkthrough before the Ravens fly to Minnesota for joint practices against the Vikings.

On August 18, 2008, a 19-year-old Virat Kohli walked out at Dambulla and scored 12 on his India debut. Eighteen years later, the boy who was once a surprise selection has become one of the defining figures of modern cricket: a batter, captain, standard-setter, survivor and, perhaps most importantly, a player who changed what Indian cricket expected from itself.

Virat Kohli is not just an athlete; he has become a brand of cricket, inspiring a generation through his mindset, skills and, most importantly, his hunger for the game. That hunger made him more intense, more furious and, at his best, almost unbeatable. Across his career, Kohli has achieved almost everything: the U19 World Cup, ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup.

There was nothing particularly prophetic about Virat Kohli's first international innings.

On that day at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Sri Lanka, the teenager walked out to open India's innings. He faced 22 **** , made 12 and was trapped lbw by Nuwan Kulasekara.

India lost by eight wickets. There was no century. No match-winning chase. No hint, at least in the scorecard, that something extraordinary had begun.
Eighteen years later, the numbers have become difficult to ignore.

As of August 2026, Kohli has played 314 ODIs and scored 14,941 runs at 58.59, with 54 hundreds and 79 fifties. He has 9,230 Test runs from 123 matches, including 30 centuries, and finished his T20I career with 4,188 runs from 125 matches. Across international cricket, that is 28,359 runs and 85 centuries.
Long before Dambulla, there was a December morning in 2006 that revealed something about Kohli that statistics never could. He was 18, playing for Delhi against Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy match at the Feroz Shah Kotla. He was unbeaten on 40 overnight when his father, Prem Kohli, died suddenly. Kohli returned to the ground the next morning. He scored 90. It was not just an innings. It was an early declaration of character.

Two years later, he was leading India at the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. India won the tournament. Kohli scored 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47.

He had a modest start to his international career during the Sri Lanka tour. In the fourth ODI of that 2008 series, Kohli made 54, his first international half-century. A year later came his first hundred: 107 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata.
By 2011, Kohli was no longer a prospect. He was part of India's World Cup-winning side. He scored a century against Bangladesh in India's opening game and later walked into the **** hede dressing room during the final when India were 31 for 2.

He made 35. Not the sort of number that usually survives in a career built on hundreds. His 35 helped India recover alongside Gautam Gambhir, before MS Dhoni's 91 finished the job against Sri Lanka.

India won the World Cup. Kohli was just 22.

Aug. 16—PULLMAN — In his time at Washington State, Julian Dugger has become something of an enigma.
As he enters his second season with the Cougars, the lefty quarterback has been one of the best athletes on both teams he's been on. He's also been one of the fastest. He's athletic and strong, elusive and shifty, a Division I athlete if there ever was one.
Still, this question has always followed him around: Can he get on the field as a quarterback?
Eight practices into this fall camp, that answer has yet to materialize, but Dugger turned in a convincing case on Saturday. In the Cougars' first scrimmage of fall camp, Dugger delivered five scoring drives, including two touchdowns: an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cash Landau and a 21-yard scramble, turning pressure in the pocket into an easy jaunt into the end zone.
In an unofficial tally of statistics, Dugger completed 6 of 10 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, plus six rushes for 33 yards and another score. He also led drives that ended in field goals from kicker Jack Stevens, who has quietly submitted a sterling fall camp en route to his second season as the Cougs' placekicker. All told, it added up to Dugger's best outing in his second fall camp on the Palouse.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has made his first important decision.
Mannion will call plays from the sideline Saturday when the Eagles open their preseason against the Baltimore Ravens, giving Philadelphia its first live look at its new offensive coordinator in a game setting. Mannion had said last week that he was still deciding whether he would operate from the sideline or the coaching booth.
The decision gives Mannion an opportunity to experience the full game-day operation from the same vantage point as the rest of Philadelphia's coaching staff. It also puts him closer to the players he will communicate with throughout the game as he begins to take ownership of the Eagles' offense. Mannion's debut is one of the biggest storylines surrounding Saturday's preseason opener, even with many of Philadelphia's starters expected to sit. Baltimore has sued prediction market operators Kalshi and Polymarket, accusing both of running unlicensed sportsbooks in the city.
Mayor Brandon Scott and the City Council filed the complaints Thursday in Circuit Court for Baltimore City.
The city says both platforms let residents bet on game winners, point spreads, point totals, and player statistics. Those propositions match products sold by licensed sportsbooks, according to the complaints.
Both companies call them event contracts. However, Baltimore argues they function as sports bets and amount to unlawful gambling under Maryland law.
Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that the missing licenses free both firms from the tax bills, audits, and player-protection rules that licensed operators carry.

Nearly half of workers say they've recently changed jobs or plan to within six months, but many remain stuck.
Nearly half of applicants say they've massaged their materials—mostly by omission, not fabrication—as competition has ramped up for scarce openings.
Job searching has become a daily habit for many American workers. Landing a new job, though, remains the hard part.
That's according to FlexJobs' State of the Job Search Report, which shows the low-hire, low-fire labor market continues to frustrate the many workers itching to move on. Nearly half of workers said they recently changed jobs or plan to within six months. More than half said they search for openings every day.
Government data on job turnover tells the other half of the story. The quits rate held at 2.0% in June, and employers hired at a rate of just 3.4%, both near their weakest levels in years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported last week.

CJ Abrams was the starting shortstop for the National League All-Star team this year. But the Washington Nationals will be transitioning him to second base during the rest of the season, manager Blake Butera announced on Friday.
In Abrams' place, Nasim Nuñez will eventually become the Nationals' starting shortstop. But those who follow the team — and its minor-league prospects — wonder if Seaver King, ranked No. 4 in the Washington system by MLB.com, could soon take over at that position.
Abrams, 25, has had an outstanding offensive season for the Nationals with a slash line of .284/.357/.541 with 29 home runs, 23 doubles, 23 stolen bases and an MLB-leading 91 RBI.
However, he has not been an All-Star in the field. Among traditional statistics, Abrams leads MLB shortstops with 19 errors in 113 games (112 starts).

With Major League Baseball tracking statistics for just about every scenario and situation, Eric Karros has one they may have missed.
In his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kyle Tucker is having the worst season of his Major League career. Tucker and his wife also had their first baby in March, shortly before the season began. And while Tucker was at the plate Thursday night, Dodgers play-by-play voice Joe Davis, who has three kids of his own, noted it would be interesting to see a breakdown of stats for players with young children.
"It'd be fun to see guys with kids under five, their home/road splits vs players that don't have kids under five," Davis said.
The implication is that when players with young children are at home, their sleep will be interrupted much more than when they're on the road, possibly affecting their on-field performance. As a dad of three kids ages four and under myself, I can attest to the rarity of uninterrupted sleep. But Dodgers ****** yst Eric Karros wanted to take the stat a step further, wondering what it might mean if a player with young children had great stats at home.
"Then you could track it even more," Karros said. "Guys are having great years with young kids, and then four years down the road, they're divorced."

Prince Sverre Magnus has announced his next steps – and it involves a move to another country.
The Norwegian royal, 20, is set to begin studying at Forward College in Lisbon for his Bachelor's degree in Business Management this autumn.
Classes will be held in Portugal for the first year, with training subsequently taking place in Paris and Berlin, respectively, according to Norway's royal house.

Wall Street is increasingly betting the latest jobs report will take a Fed rate hike off the table and give stocks room to climb.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' July labor market report showed the economy lost 23,000 jobs, far short of expectations. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% as labor force participation dropped to a near-pandemic low.
"The report suggests that the economy is seemingly slipping back toward the 'no hire, no fire' narrative that characterized the labor market through much of 2025," said Jim Baird, chief investment officer with Plante Moran Financial Advisors, in a note on Friday.
The latest report shows the three-month rolling average of job gains has fallen to just 20,000, while the six-month average has declined to a weak 44,000, noted Ameriprise chief economist Russell Price.
"There were many moving parts, but very little to like about this report," said Price on Friday. "If the job market falters, consumers and the economy might not be far behind."

Scooping ice cream, lifeguarding swimming pools, and restocking retail stores during the summer has long been teenagers' rite of passage. For most, it's the first time they build real-world skills and earn their own pocket change. But now, teens are up against the worst summer job market since the Great Recession. Landing a job at the back of a mom-and-pop shop feels almost as hard as scoring a full-time corporate role.
"I didn't know it was going to be this hard. I thought it was going to be quite easy. And with all the applications I sent through, I feel a bit discouraged," Simon Chow, a 17-year-old who spent months applying to dozens of summer gigs, tells Fortune. "I'm looking everywhere, and I'll take anything at this point."
Around 790,000 jobs in May, June, and July of this year opened up for teenagers—down from around 801,000 gigs from 2025—according to a recent report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. And if the study's prediction plays out, this stretch of summer would mark the lowest teen hiring since 1948, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking the data. Beyond the previous year, the only other time this figure dropped to a low this concerning was in 2010 (960,000), when the U.S. was reeling from the Great Recession.
Now, teenagers are having to get crafty to land their minimum-wage summer gigs. Like many job seekers, they're playing the numbers game, sending out dozens of applications only to be ghosted. Others are employing the old-fashioned strategy deployed by their parents, strutting up to storefronts with resume in hand and elevator pitch memorized. Christopher Bell has become one of the most consistent drivers in NASCAR over the second half of the 2026 season. The only thing missing has been a trip back to Victory Lane.
Bell added another runner-up finish Sunday at Iowa Speedway, placing second behind Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Ty Gibbs after spending much of the afternoon among the fastest cars on track. While the result extended an unusual statistical streak, it also underscored what Bell has accomplished while continuing to race with a fractured left wrist suffered earlier this summer.
Bell's second-place finish marked his seventh runner-up result of the 2026 Cup Series season and his fourth in the last five races.
That consistency puts him in rare company.
According to NASCAR statistics, Bell is the first driver to record four runner-up finishes over a five-race span since Kyle Larson accomplished the feat across the end of the 2016 season and the beginning of 2017.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow fell to No. 44 in the NFL's top 100 players of 2026. The former LSU football passer is down from No. 38 ahead of last season. He missed most of 2025 due to a turf toe injury sustained in Week 2, but he returned in Week 13. Here is what the NFL said about Burrow.
"As long as Burrow's on the field, the Bengals have a chance to pull out a win. That's what the statistics lean to, anyhow. Cincinnati was 5-3 last season with Burrow starting games -- and 6-11 overall-- missing the playoffs for the third year in a row. Despite missing more than half the season, Burrow still resides in the top 50, showcasing just how highly respected he is among his NFL brethren."
Since the Bengals drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, Burrow has completed three seasons with over 4,000 passing yards. He took the Bengals to the Super Bowl in 2021 and earned three Pro Bowl distinctions. He will look to get the Bengals back to the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Over six seasons of professional football, Burrow has 20,810 passing yards, a 68.5% completion percentage and 157 touchdowns. The entire top 100 has yet to be released but Burrow currently ranks behind fellow quarterbacks Dan Prescott (No. 31), Jared Goff (No. 33) and Justin Herbert (No. 39).

Ashley Banjo MBE said it could have been more difficult if his dance group Diversity were starting out today due to the way the world had changed.
In 2007, the street dance troupe was formed with 11 members from London and Essex, before winning ITV's Britain's Got Talent two years later.
The 37-year-old, who worries that the next big dance group could be missed due to rising living costs and reduced opportunities, has backed a programme to support 20 individuals in professional dancing.
It came as the number of working dancers and choreographers has been cut by a third since 2019, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Banjo, who grew up in Wickford, Essex, said the world is "very different" from when he started out and thinks the costs can be overwhelming.

Once a Pittsburgh Steeler, always a Pittsburgh Steeler. Former head coach-turned-sports ***** yst Mike Tomlin made his NBC debut before the 2026 NFL Hall of Fame Game, and he used this new opportunity to advocate for one Steelers legend who deserves to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio.
On Thursday, Tomlin argued that legendary Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward deserves to be honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
"My golden ticket, unquestionably, goes to Hines Ward," Tomlin said. "He's got Hall of Fame numbers. He's got 1,000 career catches, 12,000 yards, 85 touchdowns and a Super Bowl MVP. But beyond the statistics, it was his style of play. This guy was a predator, not prey. Every defensive player in the National Football League feared Hines Ward. When you played against Hines Ward, you hated him. No DB liked Hines Ward. He would try to take your head off."
Ward's stats, individual accolades and Super Bowl championships speak for themselves. But Ward has patiently waited 10 straight years as a Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist. Hopefully, the 2027 class is where Ward can punch his ticket to football immortality.
