On August 27, CIBC (NYSE:CM) reported third-quarter results that pushed adjusted earnings per share to $2.73, up 26% from a year earlier and marking the ninth consecutive quarter of double-digit EPS growth. Adjusted net income climbed to $2,648 million on revenue of $8,368 million, up 15% year over year, and return on equity reached 16.8%, up 260 basis points from the same quarter last year. The headline numbers describe a bank firing on multiple cylinders at once, even as management flagged pockets of strain underneath.
Capital Markets net income grew 34% year over year to $722 million, powered by equity trading and financing activity. Canadian Personal and Business Banking delivered $948 million in net income, up 17% from a year ago, while net interest margin climbed to 304 basis points, up 3 basis points sequentially on higher loan and deposit margins. In the US segment, net income rose 23% to $320 million, helped by lower provisions for loan losses and a revenue increase, even as net interest margin slipped 14 basis points sequentially to 3.76%. CIBC's efficiency ratio tightened by 200 basis points from a year earlier, the 12th straight quarter the bank has generated positive operating leverage, a sign revenue is outrunning costs rather than expenses eating into the gains.
Wealth Management showed similar strength, with ******* ets under administration and ******* ets under management both up more than 20% year over year and credit fees rising 25% on strong corporate lending and financing activity. Investor's Edge, the bank's self-directed investing platform, posted 34% growth in new account openings, and the managed mass affluent client base grew 4%, supporting a 12% increase in money-in balances. CIBC also returned capital to shareholders through 7.5 million shares repurchased during the quarter, and CEO Harry Culham pointed to the newly launched CIBC AI 2.0 agentic workspace and the CIBC AdvisorAssist platform, which he said cuts advisers' administrative documentation time by up to 50%.
Not every line moved in CIBC's favor. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio slipped 19 basis points sequentially to 13.4%, as organic capital generation was offset by share buybacks and a $269 million charge, $232 million after tax, related to CIBC's planned sale of its Caribbean banking unit, CIBC Caribbean Bank Limited. Provisions on impaired loans climbed $64 million sequentially to $612 million, which CIBC linked to a handful of one-off credit issues inside its Canadian Commercial Banking and Capital Markets books rather than any broader deterioration. Total deposits fell 1% year over year, and GIC balances dropped 10% as clients shifted funds into higher-margin managed mutual fund products.

BEIJING, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Tesla will roll out software fixes for millions of vehicles in China, the country's market regulator said on Monday, marking the automaker's largest-ever recall in the market.
Effective September 25, Tesla will recall 2.98 million China-made and imported Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles because emergency door release handles may be difficult to identify, potentially hindering escape or rescue after a severe crash and electrical system failure. The remedy includes warning labels and an over-the-air (OTA) update that lowers windows after a collision.
Separately, Tesla is immediately recalling 2.74 million China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for an OTA software update to enhance driver-attention monitoring while ******* isted steering and other driver-assistance functions are engaged, reducing the risk of collisions if drivers fail to respond promptly.

With Ram resurrecting the supercharged 777-horsepower TRX SRT and aggressively pushing its 540-hp inline-six Ram 1500 RHO, Ford is making a aggressive move to protect its territory. For the 2027 model year, The Blue Oval has slashed $4,010 off the standard F-150 Raptor's entry sticker, bringing the delivered base price down to $77,790.

Matt Gulbin may not have fallen immediately asleep Wednesday night.
Gulbin, a rookie out of Michigan State, was drafted by the Commanders in the sixth round, 209th overall, in last April's NFL Draft. Gulbin was selected to bring along and provide depth behind starting center Nick Allegretti.
However, on the very first day of the Commanders' 2026 training camp, Allegretti strained a calf. It was a bad enough strain that Allegretti missed nearly three weeks of training camp practices before returning August 18. Wednesday, Allegretti again had to leave practice early after getting injured.
"I think really, just taking it day-by-day, trying to get better every day," is simply how Gulbin replied to Denton Day when asked Wednesday what he is learning through his first NFL training camp. (I am) taking advantage of everything we do, whether it is practice, walkthroughs or meetings, being in tune and locked in with that."
When asked about the offensive line room, Gulbin quickly responded, "I feel like we have a really good group. Coach Stape, Coach Toub and Coach Stolt do a really good job fostering a good brotherhood. They are down-to-earth, salt-of-the-earth guys. Everybody takes care of each other, which I'm super-grateful for." Gulbin was referring to Darnell Stapleton (Offensive Line Coach), Shane Toub (Assistant Offensive Line Coach) and Brian Stoldt (Offensive Quality Control Coach).

Last week, I asked you who the Cubs second-most valuable player was. The vote wasn't close as 60 percent of you said it was Seiya Suzuki.
Here's the part with the music and the movies. You can do with that what you want.
Saturday was the 101st anniversary of the birth of the great Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson. So to honor Peterson, we have him performing the bossa nova classic "Wave" with guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) in Italy in 1985.

The Bears scored 24 points and put up 235 yards in the second half of their 34-10 preseason win over the Browns on Saturday. Head coach Ben Johnson revealed after the game that wide receivers coach/assistant head coach Antwaan Randle El called the plays in the second half.
"Has anybody ever had a better first outing than Antwaan Randle El?" quarterback Tyson Bagent said, via Dan Wiederer of TheAthletic.com. "That's just who he is. He's always prepared. He knows the ins and outs of the playbook. So really, it was not surprising — at least for us on the sideline."
Randle El, who turns 47 next week, impressed Johnson and the quarterbacks with the way he handled the call sheet.
"He did a phenomenal job," Johnson said. "He was part of the quarterbacks' meeting [Friday] night, and we were talking about what was on the call sheet and their favorites and all that. I think it was a phenomenal experience for him. I know our guys really rallied around that."
Declan Doyle was the Bears' offensive coordinator last year, but Johnson called the plays. Thus, Johnson allowed Doyle to leave for Baltimore to become the Ravens' offensive coordinator and play-caller this season.

The latest tranche of materials on unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) released by the U.S. government includes video of what appears to be an object traversing the skies last year over the Middle East.
"The United States Central Command submitted a report of an unidentified anomalous phenomenon to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) consisting of 1 minute and 39 seconds of video footage from an electro-optical and infrared sensor aboard a U.S. military platform in 2025," the War Department noted.
A description of the video says, "The sensor pans to track an area of contrast from left to right across the background, keeping it generally centered within the frame. The sensor adjusts collection mode and level of magnification several times."
Nasa Chief Confirms Agency Has Unexplained Ufo Imagery: 'We Don't Know What It Is'
Assistant to the secretary of war for public affairs and chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in part of a Friday statement, "Today, the Department of War is publishing the fifth release of declassified and historical Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) files as part of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE)."

The forgotten man in the Cleveland quarterback rotation is forcing himself into the conversation by performing well in practice. But Dillon Gabriel has yet to officially enter the competition to win the starting quarterback job with the Browns.
Does he feel disrespected by that?
"Never disrespected," Gabriel told reporters on Wednesday. "I don't take things personally, it's a business. I'm focused on what I need to do to get better, and that's all I'm focused on. I'm present with that."
Gabriel also was asked whether he believes earning more reps gives him a chance to seize the job.
"I'm really just focused on mastering my reps," Gabriel said. "I really appreciate [pass game coordinator] Danny Bryer and [senior director of player development] James Cook. James Cook and [offensive skill development specialist] Demetric Felton are big on walkthroughs in the morning, which helps set me up for a good day. And afterwards with Danny Bryer, a guy I've really leaned on, getting coached up — three or five reps, talking through it as best I can and improving. And same with [assistant quarterbacks] coach [Matt] Baker, he's been really good for me."

Baron Capital, an investment management company, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for the "Baron Health Care Fund". A copy of the letter is available to download here. The Fund gained 11.99% during the quarter, compared with the 10.48% gain for the Russell 3000 Health Care Index and the 15.44% gain for the Russell 3000 Index. Since inception, the Fund appreciated 10.61% on an annualized basis, compared with 10.02% for the Benchmark and 14.83% for the Index. Strong stock selection in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health care equipment, and life sciences tools and services supported the Fund's outperformance, although limited exposure to managed care stocks reduced relative returns. The Fund remains positive on health care due to improving biotechnology funding, strong acquisition activity, recovering managed care margins, and growth from an aging population, chronic disease, medical innovation, and higher health care spending. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know the best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Baron Health Care Fund highlighted Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG). Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) develops, manufactures, and markets products that enable physicians and healthcare providers to enhance the quality of and access to minimally invasive care in the United States and internationally. On August 3, 2026, Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) closed at $375.41 per share. The one-month return of Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) was -13.53% and its shares lost 26.60% over the past 52 weeks. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) has a market capitalization of $132.62 billion.
Baron Health Care Fund stated the following regarding Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) sells robotic-assisted surgical systems. Shares declined after the company's first-quarter U.S. system placements came in below investor expectations. Medical device stocks also broadly underperformed the market amid concerns that health care utilization trends could decelerate following the expiration of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies. Concerns were further compounded by the potential impact of Medicaid work requirements expected to take effect in 2027. Despite these headwinds, we believe Intuitive can continue to grow revenue at a mid-teens rate for many years and remain positive on the company's long-term growth outlook."
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) is not on our list of the 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 103 hedge fund portfolios held Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) at the end of the first quarter which was 109 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of Intuitive Surgical, Inc. A finance employee at the global design firm Arup transferred $25.6 million in a deepfake fraud after joining a video call with synthetic versions of senior executives. The faces looked real. The voices sounded real. The instructions were false.
That was not an isolated warning. Starbucks quietly retired an AI inventory system only nine months after deployment after baristas reported that it miscounted products and slowed their work. Deloitte's Australian member firm agreed to partially refund the government for a $290,000 AI-assisted report that included nonexistent academic sources and a fabricated court quotation. Different industries. Different technologies. The same failure: people could not trust the output, the identity, or the system.
Trust is becoming a form of economic infrastructure. Companies that cannot engineer it will move slower, spend more, and lose markets. When trust is strong, capital moves, partnerships form, and companies scale. When it breaks, transactions slow, compliance and insurance costs rise, and leaders retreat from risk.
Trust is not blind faith. It is earned confidence that facts are real, identities are authentic, systems are secure, contracts will be honored, and someone will be accountable when things go wrong. In business terms, trust reduces friction. In strategic terms, it creates speed.
As America marks its 250th anniversary, we should remember that trust was not a side note to the founding. It was the bet. In my first three essays in this Freedom & Enterprise series, I described the Declaration of Independence as America's first founding bet, the system it created as one that let people build free, and the freedom to fail as one of our greatest competitive advantages. Beneath all three is a more fundamental principle: America trusted free people to govern themselves, take risks, honor commitments, and build institutions strong enough to survive disagreement.

Elfyn Evans holds third place at Rally Finland despite rolling his Toyota on Saturday, as Sebastien Ogier was taken to hospital after crashing out of the lead.
Nine-time champion Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia had a big accident on stage 17 - Saturday's penultimate stage - after they ran wide on a fast, right-hand corner and their Toyota crashed into trees.
The stage was stopped and an update from Toyota said both Ogier and Ingrassia got out of the car "unassisted", and were taken to hospital for checks but were "conscious and generally OK".
Sami Pajari, who won his first rally at the previous round in Estonia, inherited first place from Ogier and leads his home event with two stages remaining on Sunday.
The Finnish driver holds an advantage of 46.4 seconds over Toyota team-mate Oliver Solberg, while Evans moved into third place ahead of Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux after setting the fastest time on Saturday's final stage.
