Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time. Someone could slip on ice on your front walkway and break several bones. Or perhaps your tires lose traction on a rainy day, causing you to rear-end the vehicle in front of you, totaling the car, and injuring the other driver. Your home or auto insurance can help cover the costs of accidents like these if you're found liable. However, if the damages exceed your policy's liability limits, you could be responsible for paying the remaining costs out of pocket.
"That's where an umbrella policy would come into place," said Kim Bowser, vice president of national product and experience development at Grange Insurance. "Your auto or home insurance would typically cover the loss first. Umbrella kicks in as an extra layer on top of that coverage protection."
Umbrella insurance is a safety net protecting you from financial disaster. It pays to know what an umbrella policy is, how it works, and what it covers.

Wall Street usually spends earnings season talking down the next quarter. This time it's doing the opposite.
More S&P 500 (^GSPC) companies are raising their profit outlooks than cutting them, and the gap is the widest in the Bloomberg Intelligence data that starts in 2011.
Analysts are lifting 2026 and 2027 estimates instead of trimming them, a reversal from the usual midyear markdown.
The beats are loud too.
Through July 22, roughly 93% of the companies that had reported topped estimates, per Fundstrat, against a 78% five-year average — what financial writer Mike Zaccardi called "a whopping 15.5% surprise."

Magnolia Oil & Gas has agreed to acquire privately held WildFire Energy in a transaction valued at approximately $4.06 billion, a move that more than doubles its acreage in the Giddings area of South Texas and creates one of the region's largest Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk positions.
The acquisition adds approximately 810,000 net acres to Magnolia's existing holdings, bringing its total Giddings position to more than 1.25 million net acres. The combined portfolio provides exposure to multiple productive formations, including the Austin Chalk, Eagle Ford and Woodbine, while strengthening the company's presence near premium Gulf Coast markets.
Magnolia said the acquired **** ets currently produce around 53,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with roughly 70% of output consisting of oil. The company expects the transaction to immediately increase cash flow, free cash flow and earnings per share while lowering its corporate reinvestment rate.
The company also expects to generate more than $100 million in annual synergies through operational efficiencies, infrastructure integration and lower corporate costs. Included in the acquisition are a sand mine that supplies most of Magnolia's completion sand needs and more than 500 miles of gas gathering pipelines in Giddings.
Reflecting confidence in the combined business, Magnolia announced a 9% increase in its quarterly dividend to $0.18 per share, payable in the third quarter of 2026, while maintaining its existing share repurchase program.

Our ***** ysts just identified a stock with the potential to be the next Nvidia. Tell us how you invest and we'll show you why it's our #1 pick. Tap here.
Bloomsbury Publishing is sticking with its full-year guidance, helped by ongoing AI licensing revenue and growth in its Academic & Professional division. The publisher expects adjusted profit of about £49.9 million (about $67.3 million) this year, up from £44.9 million last year, despite a consumer division that is still waiting for big fantasy releases and fresh Harry Potter momentum. The lesson is simple. Magic wands are nice, but licensing your back catalogue to AI companies may be the new enchanted object.
Bloomsbury said it remains confident of meeting full-year market expectations after the first four months of its financial year.
The London-listed publisher, best known as the UK home of Harry Potter and the publisher of Sarah J. Maas, said consensus expectations stand at revenue of £354.2 million and adjusted profit of £49.9 million for the year to February 2027.
That would compare with revenue of £325.9 million and adjusted profit of £44.9 million in the previous financial year.

At first glance, broad-market funds seemingly offer similar exposure to the exact same underlying stocks. Various **** et managers offer several heavyweight funds that claim to capture the broader market. However, subtle differences in how these products are built, priced, and managed mean they are far from interchangeable.
Many funds track the same indexes.Structural and management differences such as fee structures and composition make products far from interchangeable.
Investors can potentially optimize their portfolios by choosing between different funds for the same index. For example, selecting SPY for high liquidity and active trading or SPYM for cost-efficient, long-term holding.

Artisan Partners, an investment management firm, issued its first-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund". A copy of this letter is available for download here. In Q1 2026, the portfolio underperformed the benchmark Russell Midcap Value Index as the market favored momentum-driven stocks over quality factors. Some holdings faced company-specific setbacks and negative sentiment. The Fund's Investor Class: ARTQX returned -4.93%, Advisor Class: APDQX declined by -4.90%, and Institutional Class: APHQX fell by -4.97%, all trailing the Index's 3.68% gain. The equity market in the quarter was mixed, with mid- and small-cap indices showing resilience despite lagging large-cap growth stocks. Volatility increased, initially fueled by interest in AI and private credit, but escalated after the outbreak of war in Iran, leading to rising oil prices. Sector performance varied, with energy leading the gains. The Fund continues to seek companies capable of value growth during market dislocations at attractive entry points. Also, review the Fund's top five holdings to see its best picks for 2026.
In its first-quarter 2026 investor letter, Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund highlighted Brown & Brown, Inc. (NYSE:BRO) as a newly added position. Brown & Brown, Inc. (NYSE:BRO) is a leading insurance brokerage firm that operates through Retail and Specialty Distribution segments. On July 7, 2026, Brown & Brown, Inc. (NYSE:BRO) posted a one-month return of 15.10%, while its shares lost 35.94% over the past 52 weeks.
Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund stated the following regarding Brown & Brown, Inc. (NYSE:BRO) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
"We initiated six new positions in Q1, representing an above-average rate of new purchase activity. Increased market volatility and greater dispersion in US equities during the quarter created more opportunities to add new names that meet our three margin-of-safety criteria: attractive business economics, sound financial condition and attractive valuation. Additionally, we sought to use recent volatility to upgrade the portfolio's quality. Our three largest new buys by position size were Brown & Brown, Inc. (NYSE:BRO), Veralto and IQVIA Holdings.
Brown & Brown is a leading US insurance broker focused on the middle market. The shares have come under pressure alongside the broader broker group, as investors recalibrated expectations following a period of elevated growth driven by a hard insurance market. As pricing and growth have begun to normalize, valuations have compressed, creating what we believe is a more attractive entry point. From a business economics perspective, insurance brokerage is a compelling model. Brokers act as intermediaries without taking underwriting risk, resulting in high margins, low capital intensity and strong free cash flow conversion, supported by high customer retention. Brown & B

President Donald Trump is accusing major oil companies of keeping gasoline prices artificially high despite a sharp drop in crude oil prices, saying American drivers are being "gouged" and calling on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate.
"The big Oil Companies are not dropping their price at the pump commensurate with the sharply lower prices they are paying for Oil," Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social (1). "Those prices are dropping like a rock! In other words, customers are being 'gouged.'"
Trump said he had instructed the DOJ to "immediately start looking into this," adding, "Gasoline prices better start going down a lot faster than what I'm seeing!"
The comments come as wholesale oil prices have largely retreated to where they traded before the recent conflict with Iran, while prices at the pump have remained comparatively elevated.

Markets are facing an early summer swoon, and it's not even the July 4 weekend.
The insight: Amid a week of heightened volatility, especially for tech stocks, the S&P 500 (^GSPC) closed below its 50-day moving average for the first time in more than two months on Friday, according to Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace ****** ysis. The index appears set to start the week under this level based on premarket trading action on Monday.
The 50-day moving average is one of the most widely watched technical indicators on Wall Street, calculated simply by averaging a stock or market's closing price over the past 50 trading days and plotting it as a continuously updated line on a chart. It gives investors a real-time snapshot of a stock or market's medium-term price trend.
Read more: How to protect your money during turmoil, stock market volatility
When a stock or market is trading above the 50-day moving average, it is generally considered to be in a healthy uptrend, signaling that buying momentum is stronger than selling pressure. A stock or market trading below that line is often viewed as technically weak and vulnerable to further downside.

Potential homebuyers tend to agonize over two things: mortgage rates and home prices. But that's not where the burden of homeownership ends. It's really just the beginning.
Buyers will lock in a rate, sign at closing, and ****** ume the hard part of buying a house is over, but many things can go wrong, and there are many hidden homeownership costs that not everyone stops to consider.
For example, a recent survey of 2,500 U.S. homeowners from Ownwell, a property tax appeal service, found 76% say their property taxes in recent years have run higher than they budgeted for—up 10 percentage points from just a year earlier. Nearly two-thirds said they were surprised or shocked by their most recent tax bill, and 9 in 10 said they're concerned about the long-term financial hit of rising property taxes. And even more startling is 40% said they had considered moving specifically because of them.
"Taxes have quietly joined insurance as one of the biggest affordability shocks after closing, especially in states with high property taxes like New York, Massachusetts, and Texas," Ownwell CEO Colton Pace told Fortune.
These new stats point to an affordability problem the usual housing conversation misses. While it's more accessible (albeit sometimes painful) to monitor mortgage rates and home prices, recurring expenses like taxes, insurance, maintenance, and other line items that ****** ody mentions at the closing table are quietly reshaping what it actually costs to keep a home.
