A portion of a major California highway has been renamed after Hollywood icon James Dean 71 years after he died in a fiery crash on the road while driving to a race in Salinas.
Caltrans officials were joined by representatives of the late star in the town of Cholame on Wednesday where a segment of Highway 46—which connects the coast with the Central Valley—officially became the James Dean Memorial Highway.
"Yesterday's ceremony marked 71 years since Dean's tragic crash, and local leaders, CHP, and community advocates came together with one message: safer roads save lives," the announcement read, referring to the designation near the site of Dean's fatal 1955 crash.

When President Donald Trump’s name was ordered removed from the Kennedy Center this spring, it seemed that an opening to move on from his reign over the performing arts center might have emerged.
“I have instructed the Department of Commerce to make all necessary arrangements with Congress to allow a full and complete transfer of this Institution, giving them the responsibility for its Operation, Maintenance, and Management,” the president wrote in a late-May Truth Social post, seemingly relinquishing the control he’d seized a year prior.
Speculation even bubbled up among some of the more than a dozen “ex-officio,” board members — who don’t get a vote but are not allied with Trump — over whether the former board chairman, billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein, could be brought back to help restore the center’s fundraising and programming, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. (CNN has asked Rubenstein for comment.)
But after Trump said he would remain chairman, “it kind of all squelched pretty quickly,” one of the sources said. The hope that his crusade to rename a monument dedicated to the memory of John F. Kennedy had ended turned out to be wishful thinking.
Instead, nine months from a cold December day when cranes first placed Trump’s name on the marble façade, the institution has been brought to the brink by the president still very much engaged in a fight: lights have been turned off inside, infrastructure is crumbling and protests swirl while legal battles mount.

President Trump was photographed this week on board Air Force One examining a large poster with the words "Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED" printed above a rendering of a construction site, heightening concerns that his administration wants to raze Washington, D.C.'s iconic performing arts venue if his name is not added to its facade.
"I think that the Trump administration should certainly have recognition," the president told reporters before he boarded the plane Wednesday in North Carolina. "Because frankly, if we don't do that, it's going to close. It'll end up being ripped down."
Trump's comments and the photographs that followed are the latest developments in a convoluted saga that started when he dismissed the center's trustees in February 2025 — just days after returning to office — and replaced them with loyalists who elected him chairman.
Despite several legal setbacks, Trump's handpicked board has been pushing ever since to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which was built as a "living memorial" to the slain 35th president, after the White House's current occupant.
The day before Trump was photographed with the "Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED" poster, his appointees voted to close the center's main building for renovations. Does this mean Trump will bulldoze the Kennedy Center if he doesn't get the "recognition" he wants? Here's what we know — and what we don't.

Pennsylvania state Rep. David Maloney, a Republican, is asking President Donald Trump to rename Lake Erie to "Lake Pennsylvania" following similar renaming efforts by the president.
Maloney is preparing a resolution calling on Trump, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and lawmakers on Capitol Hill to take steps to rename Lake Erie to "Lake Pennsylvania," arguing that the change is needed to reflect the lake's modern identity.
"This is Pennsylvania's only Great Lake. Its modern economy and identity are increasingly tied to the boaters, anglers, families and tourists who come to enjoy it," Maloney said in a statement. "Ohio has plenty of shoreline. New York already has two Great Lakes. Canada has four others."

Pop star Pink is under fire online for resharing an anti-Israel message and then following it up with a series of Instagram posts directed at her detractors.
Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, supported British musician Ed Sheeran on stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in a show called Loop Tour on September 4 and 5. Donning a keffiyeh in front of an 80,000-strong audience, the rapper shouted "Free Palestine" and addressed Gaza and the occupied West Bank, saying that they are not being forgotten.
"Every human being walking on this earth deserves exactly the same freedom," he added, as reported by Variety.
The rapper then performed his protest song "Hind's Hall," which featured flashes of Gaza on the stadium screens. Macklemore referenced Hind Rajab, a young Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, named after student demonstrators at Columbia University who renamed a campus building in her honor. The rapper then addressed Jewish concertgoers, saying that criticizing Israel and condemning their actions as genocide is not a condemnation of Jewish people and that his message is a message of peace and dignity for everyone.
American pop diva, whose legal name is Alecia Beth Moore Hart, posted a video with the message "Awful" to her Instagram Story, claiming that Jewish fans who came to see Sheeran's performance are exposed to propaganda against Israel. According to Pink, Macklemore's speech and video presentation amount to a false accusation of genocide, and people who came to the concert are entitled to "apologies and refunds."

President Donald Trump has dropped another clunker in the laps of his fellow Republicans in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections.
His new trade war with Canada and his related move to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" are the latest in a series of unpopular actions.
In fact, new polling suggests they're even more unpopular than Trump's previous tariffs and efforts to rename things.
A Reuters-Ipsos poll conducted in recent days is the first quality survey to test Trump's renewed clash with Canada.
It shows Americans oppose the president's executive order to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" 63% to 14%, with the rest undecided.

Investors were optimistic about a potential truce with Iran, highlighted by a mid-June memorandum for negotiations on regional security and sanctions, causing oil prices to drop and the market to rally. Despite geopolitical uncertainties, investors remain focused on a surge in AI infrastructure spending, which is expected to heavily influence the global economy, although questions about the returns from this investment loom. More than ever before, college sports are a business for everyone involved.
That money has to come from somewhere, and many schools are finding creative ways to get it. Here are some of the corporate sponsorships funding NIL and other expenses around the Big 12.
In July, Texas Tech announced a 15-year agreement with Galaxy, a data center infrastructure company, to rename Jones AT&T Stadium to Galaxy Stadium.
The former name honored the school's third president, Clifford B. Jones, who donated $100,000 to help fund the construction of the stadium in 1947.
"It goes without saying college athletics continues to evolve," Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt told Sports Business Journal. "I look at that as a very exciting opportunity and challenge to reinvent athletic administration, college athletics and how we continue to build toward a commercial media type of organization."

Al Michaels appeared to poke fun at President Donald Trump's decision to rename Lake Ontario during Thursday night's Patriots-Browns game.
While discussing the view from Cleveland during the Amazon Prime Video broadcast, Michaels referenced Lake Erie before turning his attention toward the changing name of another Great Lake.
"That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie," Michaels said in a clip shared on X. "We're not quite sure at this point. But we'll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it's going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo. Anyway, you know what I'm talking about. Read the news."
Michaels' comments came the same day Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" in U.S. government databases.
Trump said the name change was being considered amid the worsening relationship with Canada and argued that the United States did not expect to do much business with Ontario.

Crocs, Pokemon cards and kendamas never go out of style in Hawaii. And neither does the Warriors' four-wide offense, In video sessions with offensive newcomers, receivers coach Jared Ursua shows old footage of the Warriors' passing game. "We've been doing this since January," Ursua said of clips of former UH QBs Dan Robinson, Nick Rolovich, Timmy Chang, Colt Brennan, Bryant Moniz and Cole McDonald. "We are who we are, we do what we do, and this system has always worked." QB1 Micah Alejado has been starring in recent remakes, deciphering defenses ahead of the snap, releasing passes within 2.2 seconds, and throwing to targeted areas on the receivers' routes. "Micah's a special quarterback," said Chang, the UH head coach who calls the offensive plays. "He understands our offense, and he understands what teams are trying to do against us." Ursua has implored the receivers to read the coverages correctly "so Micah can throw at a high level based on our indicators, which is what the run-and-shoot is based off." Alejado has shown toughness, playing through injuries to his right ankle last season. He did not participate in contact drills ahead of the Hawaii Bowl, during which he completed 69.6% of his throws for 274 yards and three TDs. Last season, the Warriors scored on 46.1% of Alejado's full drives. Slotbacks Blaze Kamoku, Tama Uiliata, Audric Harris, Kainoa "Kaikai" Carvalho, ******* an Lacaden and Koa Eldredge are reliable inside receivers. Three years ago, in his first season as UH's defensive coordinator, Dennis Thurman kept intact the 4-2-5 scheme the Warriors ran under Corey Batoon in 2019 and Jacob Yoro in 2023. Legendary NFL broadcaster Al Michaels took a not-so-subtle jab at President Donald Trump during Thursday night's NFL preseason broadcast, joking about the president's decision to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America."
The moment came during Amazon Prime Video's broadcast of the Cleveland Browns' preseason game against the New England Patriots. As the broadcast returned from a commercial break, the camera showed an aerial view of Cleveland, Ohio, with Lake Erie in the background.
Michaels, 81, used the shot to reference Trump's executive order, which he signed earlier Thursday directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" for federal purposes. The move came as tensions with Canada over a trade deal continue to escalate.
"That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie. We're not quite sure at this point," Michaels said. "But we'll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it's going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo [for Week 1]."
Michaels added, "Anyway, you know what I'm talking about. Some of you do. Read the news."

Under the deal announced Tuesday, Metaplanet will contribute the coins, worth roughly $132.1 million, plus $2.5 million in cash, to Super League Enterprise, a gaming media company, in exchange for stock, preferred shares and warrants.
Super League will be renamed Superplanet, Inc. and trade under the ticker SUPA, becoming a consolidated Metaplanet subsidiary while keeping its existing advertising business running as a separate segment. Metaplanet will own about 95.7% of Superplanet's common stock at closing, expected in the fourth quarter.
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich framed the move as a way to tap the world's deepest capital market, saying Metaplanet is putting in its own Bitcoin, locking up its shares and backing the company with its balance sheet to compound a single group Bitcoin position across two listed platforms. The firm currently holds 43,000 BTC, ranking it the third-largest corporate holder, according to the announcement.
Analysts flagged what sets the transaction apart from the wave of shell-and-PIPE treasury deals of the past year and a half. Mark Palmer of Benchmark-StoneX, who rates Metaplanet a buy, noted the company is funding the deal with Bitcoin off its own balance sheet rather than third-party money raised at a discount.

The remaining 23 teams from the top two divisions have been split into Northern and Southern sections - but will be in one table.
They will compete from September to December on nights when Champions League fixtures are taking place.
