A fresh reading on inflation showed monthly prices rose more than expected in August, increasing the likelihood the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates next week.
A rebound to oil at $100 per barrel also complicates the picture.
Stripping out volatile food and energy prices — the way the Fed likes to scrutinize underlying inflation — the Consumer Price Index rose 0.3% month over month, compared with expectations for 0.2%. The year-over-year rate was in line with expectations for 2.4% and down a tenth of a percentage point from July. On a headline basis, CPI rose 3.4% in August, in line with expectations, and 0.4% month over month.
"The upside surprise to core CPI in August means the Fed looks set to hike next week," said Stephen Brown, North America chief economist for Capital Economics.
Markets are now betting on a 90% chance of a rate hike at Wednesday's Fed policy meeting, according to CME FedWatch.

Jade Gas has lodged a plan for development of operations (PDO) for its Tavan Tolgoi Coal Bed Methane (TTCBM) project with Mongolia's regulator and agreed a proposed 502km² production licence area.
The plan for the coal bed methane project has been submitted to the Mongolian Minerals Reserve Council for approval. It sets out a framework for drilling, dewatering, gas production and long-term management of field operations.
Jade Gas said approval of the PDO would be a regulatory milestone towards securing the long-term production rights required to commercially develop the project.
In parallel, the company agreed the proposed production licence area with the Mongolian regulator. The 502km² area is roughly 80% of the existing 629km² exploration area.
The proposed area covers the Red Lake development, which contains Jade Gas' maiden coal bed methane reserves and is the initial focus of development activities.

Aoris Investment Management, a specialist international equity manager, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for "Aoris International Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The fund invests in high-quality, wealth-generating businesses managed by prudent and capable teams, targeting an annual return of 8–12% after fees over a 5–7-year market cycle. During the June quarter, international equity markets, as represented by the MSCI AC World Accumulation Index ex Australia, returned 13.8% in AUD terms. In local currencies, the return 15.1%. The Portfolio's Class A (Unhedged) returned 5.7% after fees, underperforming its benchmark by 8.1%, while the Class C (Hedged) gained 6.7%, 8.4% less than its benchmark. The June quarter continued to reflect an unusual year, marked by significant share price increases among AI infrastructure companies, particularly semiconductor producers and data center suppliers. Economic sectors like banks and commodity producers saw gains, but the firm chose not to invest due to their cyclicality and low growth prospects. Conversely, concerns about enterprise software and data companies, challenged by AI, negatively impacted performance. The letter outlined potential incremental opportunities for portfolio companies through AI. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Aoris Investment Management highlighted SAP SE (NYSE:SAP). Headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, SAP SE (NYSE:SAP) is a leading enterprise application and business solutions provider. On August 21, 2026, SAP SE (NYSE:SAP) closed at $218.68 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $256.39 billion. SAP SE (NYSE:SAP) posted a one-month return of 27.88%, while its shares lost 19.09% over the past 52 weeks.
Aoris Investment Management stated the following regarding SAP SE (NYSE:SAP) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"SAP SE (NYSE:SAP) is the world's leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) software company. ERP systems run core business processes such as finance, human resources, manufacturing, supply chain management and customer relationship management. SAP is a core system of record for many of the world's largest organisations. Of the world's 100 largest organisations, 99 use SAP's solutions, and 80% of all the world's transactions touch an SAP system.
The value of SAP's systems should increase, because AI is only useful when it can access accurate data, business context and established workflows. AI is providing opportunities for SAP to layer on additional services which the company believes can add 20% or more to a customer's spending. Examples include its Business Data Cloud, which brings together SAP and non-SAP data for real-time ******* ysis, and its Joule AI agent, which can automate work with an understanding of customers' existing data structures and processes…" (Click here to read the full text)

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon is very clearly telling investors that they need to start worrying. In his company's second-quarter earnings release, he highlighted geopolitical tensions, inflation, fiscal deficits, and elevated ****** et prices as areas of concern. And, in an interview with CNBC, he noted that margin debt is at an all-time high. That last one could lead to a downward spiral that breaks the bull market. Here's what you need to know.
What's interesting in the list of concerns Jamie Dimon outlined in his company's second-quarter earnings is that ****** et prices are elevated despite the other negatives. Now, there is an old saying on Wall Street that the market climbs a wall of worry, so perhaps you could dismiss this situation. But when you add in record levels of margin debt to the equation, the story takes a very different turn.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Margin debt is a loan from a broker that is backed by an investor's portfolio. While the loan can be used for any purpose the investor would like (buying a car, for example), most use the money to buy additional investments. The loan risk isn't significant because it is backed by the portfolio. However, the broker will require the investor to maintain a certain amount of collateral to keep the loan open. This is where things get interesting.
Modest margin debt is unlikely to be a big issue. But if an investor uses margin loans aggressively, even a modest decline in stock prices could leave them with too little collateral. That would trigger a margin call, in which the broker demands additional collateral. The investor could just add cash to the account, but in most situations, the solution is to sell stocks. (If the investor doesn't provide additional collateral quickly enough, the broker will step in and sell stocks from the account.)

The numbers have reached a scale that markets can no longer ignore. The U.S. fiscal deficit jumped to $432 billion in July alone, the biggest monthly shortfall since early 2021, pushing the year-to-date gap to nearly $1.8 trillion, with the full-year deficit expected to approach $2 trillion. The national debt is nearing the $40 trillion milestone, and the cost of financing it has ballooned to roughly $1.2 trillion so far this year, on pace for about $1.37 trillion for the full fiscal year.
The result has been a sharp move higher in long-term Treasury yields. The 30-year bond hit 5.33% in mid-August — its highest level in 19 years — while the 10-year note pushed toward 4.75%, a 20-month high before the Treasury stepped in this week to announce increased buying of longer dated bonds. Bond strategists point to a combination of forces for the recent high: mounting deficit concerns, inflation still stuck above the Fed's 2% target, and a wave of corporate debt issuance competing with Treasurys for investor cash. Some are calling it the return of the "bond vigilantes" — investors demanding higher yields to keep funding a government that keeps borrowing more.
Because bond prices move opposite to yields, when yields rise, existing bonds — which pay lower fixed rates — become less valuable, so their prices fall. And the longer a bond's maturity (its duration), the more its price drops for a given rise in yields. A 25 basis point rise in long-term yields can translate to roughly a 4% price loss in a long-duration bond fund.
That's why the debt story is fundamentally an ETF story. The funds holding long-dated Treasurys were absorbing the full force of the yield spike, while short-duration and alternative funds are becoming the market's refuge. While yields have since retreated post-Treasury announcement and there is a potential for a surge in buying 20+ year bond ETFs, the longer term impact to long-dated bonds remains to seen.
TLT is ground zero for the debt-and-yields story. As the most popular long-duration Treasury ETF, it holds bonds with 20+ years to maturity — exactly the part of the curve recently hammered as the 30-year yield hit multi-decade highs. TLT has slumped into a correction and touched a 22-year low in August, and investors have pulled more than $4.4 billion out of the fund this year. Strikingly, even a near-5% yield wasn't enough to stem the slide: the price losses from rising rates have overwhelmed the income the fund pays. TLT is the clearest example of how duration risk works against investors when the government's borrowing costs climb.

Emerald Wealth Partners, an independent ******* et and wealth management firm based in Zurich, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for the "Focused Equity Strategy." A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The Strategy reported a 0.8% gross return for the second quarter of 2026. Equity markets rallied after the first quarter's Iran shock faded and oil prices reversed their spike, but the advance remained narrow and concentrated in cyclical semiconductor and memory stocks benefiting from supply constraints. The letter warned that investors were treating peak-cycle earnings as durable, while FOMO, IPO demand, and a US cyclically adjusted P/E ratio near 40 pointed to late-cycle market behavior. Long-term fundamentals are currently undervalued by the market, leading to underperformance in the strategy, notably due to the portfolio's avoidance of low-quality momentum-driven semiconductor stocks, which boosted the benchmark this quarter. It remains focused on enterprise infrastructure, digital platforms, custom silicon, and networking businesses that hold customer relationships, workflow data, distribution, and efficiency advantages, which could allow them to monetize AI rather than be displaced by it. Please review the Strategy's top five holdings for its key selections.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Emerald Wealth Partners Focused Equity Strategy highlighted Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL). Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) operates as an energy and petrochemical company. On August 4, 2026, Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) closed at $89.84 per share. One-month return of Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) was 9.24% and its shares gained 24.36% over the past 52 weeks. Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) has a market capitalization of $247.4 billion.
Emerald Wealth Partners Focused Equity Strategy stated the following regarding Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) was the largest detractor from quarterly performance, reducing returns by 59 bps. The stock fell 15.9% during Q2 as the ceasefire between the US and Iran pared back geopolitical risks and the Strait of Hormuz gradually reopened. This followed a strong first quarter, when Shell's shares rose 28% thanks to sharp oil and gas price rises. Following that move, Shell had become our largest position in the portfolio. We therefore sold approximately half our holding: the sharp appreciation had compressed the margin of safety and left the position larger than we were comfortable with."

Modern medicines and treatments have led to a growing demand for advanced patient diagnostics. To tailor medicines for patients in prenatal care or with cancer, you need to understand more about their bodies and specific genetic makeup.
Natera specializes in bridging the gap between doctors and patients, using innovative cell-free DNA testing to help diagnose outcomes. Specifically, it serves the prenatal and cancer testing markets. For pregnant patients, a doctor can use a Natera test to diagnose any problems with the fetus, all with minimal physical intervention. Its cancer testing has a variety of use cases, but an important one is checking for residual disease evidence in patients, which can be invaluable for someone dealing with cancer in remission.

Meta (META) being coy about future AI spending isn't what the market wants to hear as overspending fears rattle tech stocks.

Meta did raise the bottom end of its 2026 capital expenditure target, tightening the full-year spending range to $135 billion to $145 billion (up from $125 billion to $145 billion).
But specifics about 2027 capital expenditures were nonexistent.

July 28 (Reuters) - Royal Caribbean raised its annual profit forecast on Tuesday after beating quarterly estimates, sending its shares up 5%, even as it factored in a modest hit to bookings due to the travel disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.
Geopolitical uncertainty linked to the U.S.-Iran conflict has made some travelers wary of booking cruises, hurting demand for certain itineraries and adding to fuel-cost pressures for operators.
Royal Caribbean said bookings for some sailings, including Mediterranean itineraries, have been modestly hit, primarily in the third quarter.
"When you include a cruise plus the airfare (to get to the ports), it's a little bit more costly (for American consumers)," CEO Jason Liberty said, adding travelers are either putting off their trips to next year or opting for the Caribbean instead of Europe.
