WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that oil prices that have surged because of the Iran war likely won't come down until after U.S. midterm elections.
Oil prices on Wednesday jumped more than 3%, pushing international Brent crude past the $100 threshold for the first time since July as salvos between the U.S. and Iran escalated.
"Right after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward," Trump said. "I think it's going to take a little bit longer than the midterm."
The comments were a striking acknowledgment from Trump about the conflict as his Republican administration faces mounting pressure to address high gas prices as the war in Iran grinds on with no conclusion in sight.
Trump, in an exchange with reporters before traveling to Dallas for the midterm Republican convention, added that he believes Iran will finally relent after the pivotal elections are held in the U.S.

President Donald Trump has dropped another clunker in the laps of his fellow Republicans in the run-up to the 2026 midterm elections.
His new trade war with Canada and his related move to change the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" are the latest in a series of unpopular actions.
In fact, new polling suggests they're even more unpopular than Trump's previous tariffs and efforts to rename things.
A Reuters-Ipsos poll conducted in recent days is the first quality survey to test Trump's renewed clash with Canada.
It shows Americans oppose the president's executive order to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" 63% to 14%, with the rest undecided.

Anslow has admitted preventing a lawful and decent burial but denies murdering Bailey. Ferguson, who is not accused of murder, has pleaded not guilty to preventing a lawful and decent burial and another charge of ******* isting an offender.
On the opening day of the trial, Birmingham Crown Court heard Bailey, who was 36, was last seen on the afternoon of 27 September, two days before her body was found.

A 2-year-old boy is dead after he gained access to a gun in a Southern California home and shot himself, authorities said.
The child's mother, Jamaria Cobb, 20, and her boyfriend, Armand Bright, 52, were arrested for child abuse causing great bodily injury or death, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office.
The shooting happened on July 16 in Highland, California, a city of about 57,000 residents in San Bernardino County, about 65 miles east of Los Angeles.
Deputies were dispatched to the home at about 5:27 p.m. for reports of a 2-year-old who had been shot, the sheriff's office said.
They began life-saving measures on the child before emergency medical personnel responded and transported the child to a hospital, where he died soon after, officials said in a July 17 news release.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — The World Cup referee from Somalia who was denied entry to the United States after arriving in Miami and subsequently cut from the tournament by FIFA was set to make history for his country.
Omar Artan was going to be the first referee from Somalia to officiate at a World Cup after making FIFA’s final list for the tournament, which was announced two months ago. He is one of Africa’s top referees and was named the continent’s best male referee in 2025.
He was denied entry at Miami International Airport on Saturday over “vetting concerns,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement without giving details of those concerns. Artan was issued a visa to travel to the U.S. last week, according to the Somalia Embassy in Kenya that processed it.
Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, said Tuesday the referee was denied admittance for “very good reason” but also declined to go into details.
Later Tuesday, a U.S. official said the referee was refused admission due to “association with suspected members of terror organizations.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a matter that is covered by visa privacy laws.
